This week, I spoke with Dylan Hundley, an artist, mother, punk, and lover. Dylan is the lead singer of the New York post-punk/new wave band Lulu Lewis. We discuss mental health, including addiction, PTSD, and panic disorder, the importance of creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued, the transformative power of extending a compassionate hand to others (and ourselves), and the liberating (and sometimes profoundly challenging) experience of letting go, whether that is a relationship, a job, or even a version of ourselves that no longer fits. Dylan shares about the impact of trauma, the healing work that brings us back to life, and the surprising opportunity to meet new and unexpected versions of ourselves. P.S. Her love letter made me cry

Is wellness an extra treat we allow ourselves when we think we deserve it, or is it sustainable, transformative, and nourishing? Does our healing journey have to be aesthetic and social media-friendly to be impactful? I spoke with Sabrina Rollo of @VigorAndSage (https://www.instagram.com/vigorandsage) about how so many of the lessons we learn through holistic practices have clear applications in our everyday lives, including boundaries, mindfulness, and creating sustainable practices and supportive communities that align with the reality of our lives. We explore the beauty and challenges associated with witnessing real-life trauma and transformations and the complex (and often misunderstood) nature of healing. Very rarely is it a one-time event. Can we show up for ourselves and others with empathy and understanding when we are hit with yet another wave of shame and grief? Learn more about Sabrina at https://www.vigorandsage.com/.

I decided to share more about my recent journey of navigating life on life’s terms, including medical emergencies, relationships, fears, and judgments, while contemplating the power of showing up with willingness and compassion. Let’s explore our struggles with societal expectations of how and when we choose to do this, the healing power of surrender, and the transformative experience of challenging our habitual judgments. We’ll unpack the mental chatter that prevents us from setting down our emotional weapons and embracing vulnerability, curiosity, and generosity in daily interactions, highlighting that growth happens when we show up authentically and extend understanding to ourselves and others, even in the face of uncertainty. This episode is an invitation to reflect on how assumptions shape our perceptions and the potential for positive change when we choose empathy and connection over judgment.

Is it possible to find self-acceptance and wholeness in relationships, workplaces, and locations where we don’t belong? The relationship is ending, we need to find a new job, and we should have started packing our things and looking for a new home weeks ago. Instead of tenderly connecting with our wholeness, our flaws, or the parts of ourselves we’re insecure about, we lean into perfectionism. We attempt to control outcomes and not let anyone see that our outsides don’t match our insides. We’ve all had moments where we felt out of place and encountered self-doubt and fear, and burned ourselves out in the pursuit of perfection. Every one of us has gone to extreme lengths to fit into certain areas of our lives, to connect with people or groups where, in order to stay, we had to wear a mask, and it was incredibly heavy. In this episode, we explore how uncomfortable, self-denying, and self-defeating it is to force something to work when it is clearly not working. Instead of shaming ourselves for not fitting in, we offer a tender invitation and acknowledgment that maybe the mess of our very human experience, the parts of ourselves we’d rather hide, are exactly what the world needs. Let’s rediscover the inherent worthiness of simply being our authentic selves.

I am so excited to introduce all of you to Wendi Eckstein, my long-time friend and teacher. We sat down for a beautiful discussion about Reiki, energy work, boundaries, energetic hygiene, and the importance of honoring and cultivating our intuition. We explore what it means to be a deeply sensitive person while living a spiritual life in this human world and how it can be humble, powerful, and completely counterintuitive to the idea of spirituality that we are constantly sold. We talk about what it means to be a care conduit vs. a caretaker, showing up with both boundaries and unconditional love and how we can nurture ourselves while also showing up for others. Wendi also shares a vulnerable love letter to her younger self that we probably all need to hear. To contact Wendi: hellowendieckstein@gmail.com

Let’s explore the phrase, "I am less than the actions I take," and reflect on the profound implications of aligning thoughts with actions. Originating from a talk by Earl Hightower, the phrase serves as a powerful catalyst for introspection, urging listeners to release themselves from the stories all have running on a loop in our minds about who we are and who we could be “if only…” We explore the nuances of self-perception, the inconsistency between intentions and behaviors, and the importance of discernment. Whether this applies to our family of origin or intimate partnerships or occurs in the workplace, we can find ways to navigate the complexity of conflicts and resolutions, emphasizing the freedom that comes from evaluating one's actions first. Ultimately, the episode challenges listeners to assess the authenticity of their principles by examining whether they stand up in uncomfortable moments, inspiring a journey toward consistent alignment of thoughts and actions for personal growth and positive change.CONNECT WITH LOVE LETTERS AND MIXTAPESInstagram https://www.instagram.com/lovelettersandmixtapes/TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@lovelettersandmixtapes?lang=en Twitter https://twitter.com/lovelettersnmixWebsite https://www.lovelettersandmixtapes.com/
We are exploring the interconnectedness of our physical, mental, and emotional well-being and how holistic health can make a big impact by bringing our lives into balance. In today's episode, we spoke with Noell Eanes, M.Ac., an acupuncturist with over 10 years of experience in Eastern medicine and classical five-element acupuncture to understand the steps we can take to enhance our health and overall wellness and acknowledge our spiritual essence in the human experience. The episode is a rich dialogue about healing childhood trauma and the transformative power of honoring our intuition and aligning with our heart's desires. The discussion further explores the connection between the elements and meridians in Chinese medicine, offering a profound understanding of how nature's patterns are reflected in our bodies. The episode concludes with a heartfelt love letter to Noell's younger self, unraveling the layers of self-discovery, acceptance, and empowerment. Today, we're exploring the physical, mental, and financial impact of work trauma. Toxic and abusive work environments can be so commonplace in our culture that we feel pressure to accept the unacceptable. They begin to chip away at our self-esteem, negatively impact our health, and drastically increase both social isolation and our fears of deprivation. So, what can we do when we start noticing the red flags? Do we automatically talk ourselves out of gut feelings, second-guessing our instincts? Do we make lifestyle adjustments to accommodate our new traumatic reality, thinking it's just a phase? For so many of us, work trauma brings us to a breaking point. From the “Sunday scaries” to suicidal ideation, It’s a silent struggle that many face but few talk about openly. I spoke with Christine Barron of Work Trauma is Real and The Glass Ceilings Podcast about tools for navigating toxic work environments and building ourselves back up in the aftermath.

Have you ever found yourself on emotional autopilot, going through the motions yet feeling completely out of alignment? You are not alone. For many of us, this disconnection with our authentic selves happens without us even noticing. In this episode, we delve into the discomfort of feeling like a stranger to oneself and the energy mismatches that leave us lost and bewildered in a modern-day wilderness defined by societal expectations, technology, and the relentless pursuit of perfection. With themes of compassion, discernment, and empathy, we explore the complexities of modern life. It's a journey into reclaiming our authentic selves in a world that almost demands conformity and opening up to the beauty of encountering those who reflect our true essence and the lessons learned from those who enter our lives with friction.
The podcast takes a deeper dive into the interconnectedness of authenticity and setting boundaries. Rather than focusing solely on external actions, I share introspective journal prompts, challenging listeners to explore their contribution to relationship dynamics.

I'm sure you've heard the saying, “Time heals all wounds.” But what have we actually experienced in the overlap of time and harm? Have we magically forgiven others and learned valuable lessons, or have resentments festered and habits formed that prevented us from the ability to navigate conflict resolution with honesty, willingness, and integrity?
Let’s unpack the myth of automatic healing, challenging the notion that the mere passage of time can passively mend emotional wounds and repair harm. Healing is an active and intentional process requiring introspection, patience, understanding, and integration of discomfort.
Together, we will explore the grief of conflict and the many solutions we can find in the consistent practice of accountability, apologies, and making amends.

So often, discussions around failure focus on our education or our profession. But what happens when we experience real or perceived failure in other areas of our lives, whether that is our relationships, resources, or health?
This episode is a reminder that to fail is to be human and to be human is to be a little uncomfortable at times, yet society often stigmatizes failure as a mark of inadequacy. Failure often leaves emotional wounds, and while it can be difficult to access during moments of shame, accountability, discernment, and self-forgiveness become the balm that heals these wounds.
Does failure define us? Is it informative? And can we possibly work with it instead of just beating ourselves up?
Compassion allows us to see the shared humanity in our struggles and establishes a foundation where individuals feel safe to be authentic and where failure is met with kindness rather than judgment.

Generosity can often feel like an expression we reserve for moments when it suits us, or when we are overflowing with abundance, or when it is convenient and makes us look really, really good, and of course, only for those we deem worthy.
But what about generosity as a lens through which we view our place in the world? This goes much deeper than gratitude or kindness; generosity is claiming responsibility for what we can bring to a situation and how, more often than not, our gift isn’t the shiny, glamorous, or attractive thing we hope the world remembers us by. It is usually far simpler and much more uncomfortable to part with.
Today, we are discussing generosity as medicine, and we are asking ourselves the powerful question, what is the most generous thing I can do in this situation?

I think it’s important to talk about post-traumatic stress disorder with compassion, and that’s exactly what I set out to do with this episode. This is a perfectly imperfect episode that someone who is struggling with PTSD might need to hear. In this episode, we’ll explore what it feels like to be blindsided by PTSD triggers and flare-ups and which emotional tools we can use to navigate the aftermath.
The truth is, this episode is not just about the struggle—it's about resilience, compassion, and the real-life experience of getting through a workday when all you want to do is hide from the world.
Whether you're personally navigating the complexities of PTSD or seeking to understand and support those who are, this episode provides a safe space to explore the multifaceted nature of trauma and the transformative potential of building an emotional toolkit.
Also, I just had a really hard day, and I’m sure someone out there did as well.
So, tune in for an honest and heartfelt conversation that embraces vulnerability and self-acceptance in the midst of adversity.

Are you the person everyone turns to in a crisis or when they need advice or resources, but you never feel you can ask that of others?
Do people only invite you to things if everyone else is busy?
Are you often the recipient of other people's drama and trauma but not their consistent friendship and support?
Today, we are exploring what it means to be the "filler" person, the overlooked or invisible backup option person who exists on the emotional outskirts of everyone else's life and is only called in to do emotional labor.
Whether in our friendships, romantic partnerships, workplace dynamics, or our family of origin, being the filler person is a paradox of being the reliable confidant in moments of crisis while feeling invisible during times of celebration.
The episode gently encourages self-reflection, prompting listeners to consider their roles in relationships—whether they identify with the overlooked friend or recognize patterns of expecting emotional support from others.
It is a powerful reminder that being the invisible filler friend doesn't define one's worth. Instead, it serves as an invitation to explore the richness of one's own life, finding liberation outside the gaze of others.
Through a compassionate exploration of human connections, we invite listeners to reflect, grow, and embrace their wholeness beyond the roles others may assign to us.

What happens when the self dissolves and a deeper, more authentic essence emerges?
In this episode, we discuss the journey of self-discovery through loss. Whether shedding the layers of societal expectations, confronting the unknown, or navigating the aftermath of life-altering events, loss of our identity, our "somebody-ness" can shake us to our core, but it also offers us the opportunity to transcend the boundaries of self and tap into the energetic thread that connects all of us.
How does one navigate the void left by the dissolution of familiar roles and labels?
What spiritual practices aid in the reconstruction of a more authentic self?
Is there beauty in the breakdown, or is that just something we tell ourselves?
Together, we'll explore how moments of crisis can be catalysts for profound spiritual awakening.
From the ashes of identity loss, we discover the potential for rebirth and the emergence of a truer self.

So often, we are encouraged to immediately distance ourselves from any thought, feeling, or behavior deemed negative. But by doing so, are we missing opportunities to drop into deeper levels of awareness around what motivates, scares, entices, and triggers us? This episode explores what discomfort can reveal to us about ourselves and how approaching discomfort from a position of neutrality allows us to write a new story about who we are and what we want. We've all heard about being our best, highest, or most productive selves. But what does it mean to create space for our favorite selves? In this episode, we will explore the empowering (and very revealing) experience of coming into conscious contact with what we want for ourselves, what we love about ourselves, and the story of unworthiness that separates us from living every day as our favorite selves. The world is very reactive toward change-makers, alchemists, and communicators. By taking up space as we accept and trust ourselves, we can inadvertently position ourselves in conflict with anyone who benefits from our discomfort, fear, and insecurity. We can become the scapegoat, which is a real challenge for those of us who spent so much of our lives hiding who we were or minimizing our wants and needs for fear of consequences, humiliation, or abandonment. Are we burning our lives to the ground after this episode and destroying relationships? No. We are simply taking the first steps toward our purpose, capacity, and, ultimately, our favorite selves (even if we don't know who that is yet).

Many of us are fearful of being a beginner, inexperienced, or not being absolutely amazing the very first time we try something new. This fear introduces rigidity into our lives that tells us it is protecting us from harm and uncertainty when really it is blocking us from creativity, possibility, solutions, and connection. In this episode, we discuss cultivating a beginner mindset and how that can empower us in every area of our lives.
This episode speaks directly to anyone who feels that if they don’t know what is going on at all times, then something must be wrong.

So many of us are familiar with fight, flight, and freeze trauma responses, but what about fawning? How does fawning lead to people pleasing? And how is people pleasing more than just a bid for connection, how is it a coping mechanism that has distorted to become a bit manipulative?
A very difficult lesson some of us learn the hard way is that people who are not treating us well won’t treat us better if we work harder. People pleasing may have been a survival mechanism when we were younger, but as adults, how can we evolve our tools to allow us to go from surviving to thriving?
This episode is a very gentle exploration of some taboo topics, so that we can begin to reflect on our own thoughts and behavior to answer the question, are we giving, or are we grasping?
If you think you may have accidentally spent your entire life making sure everyone else around you felt comfortable, only to realize, you never felt comfortable the whole time, this episode is for you.

In my return episode following a brief health hiatus, I ask the question, "What if we didn't run away from ourselves?" The world talks about acceptance and self-acceptance, but what happens when we are moving through cycles of fear, deprivation, sadness, or loneliness? Very often, we are encouraged to call these things by a different name, to distract ourselves into new and more attractive feelings, or wear a mask to appease the outside world. What if we decided that our full range of human emotions and experiences were simply okay, expected, and not even that out of the ordinary? What if we decided that all of us was welcome here?

What is the difference between our breakdowns and our breakthroughs, and what can we learn from them?
If something in our lives is continually breaking down and always seems on the verge of falling apart, maybe we should just let it. Sometimes I think the “aha” moment occurs when we stop evaluating our strengths and skills by how hard we can work to fix things, how proficient we are at foreseeing problems, or how skilled we are at playing emotional and intellectual chess and instead appreciate how gracefully we can let things go.

"It's almost like we think the way other people drink."
"I am so afraid of being found out, but I don't even know what I did."
"If I don't know what is going on or can't see 5 steps ahead, then something must be wrong."
If these statements resonate with you, then you have found yourself in the right place. I sat down this evening with no notes or outlines, I hit record and just started talking to you the exact same way I talk to my younger self. It can be challenging to admit that as adults with agency, opportunities, and freedom, that we still feel the aftershocks of trauma or deprivation in our lives. I understand the appeal to lean towards bravado, to put up walls, to hide behind a mask of overcompensation or perfection to distance ourselves from those feelings that seem to chase us. But that always ends up leaving us empty. This episode is a reminder that you are not alone, you are only responsible for yourself, you don't have to fix it, you don't have to fix them, and that sometimes it's okay to just sit this one out.
*Please note there is changing language around substance use disorders. For the sake of this community and the specifics of what I am discussing here today, I will continue to use the terms alcoholism and addiction. I understand and honor that may not resonate for everyone.

If we are not careful, we can go through our whole lives and only be known for what we did for people and what we hid from people instead of being known for who we are and what we thought, felt, liked, loved, and needed. In this episode, we explore what happens when we speak our truth and live authentically when there are things we don’t want to say out loud. If you've lost your voice, if you are choking on your words, if you worry about being rejected or abandoned when you show up in your wholeness, if that mask of invisibility is getting too heavy to hold up any longer, this episode is for you.

Stepping away from compulsive "okayness" was heavy on my mind this morning as I hit record for this pre-coffee episode, where we explore getting curious about our lives, opening doors of perception, healing phantom pain, and integrating all of who we are. Together, we'll explore what mirror work is and how we can show up for the reality of our experience with a little more compassion and a little less judgment.

How do we cultivate space for acceptance and discernment in cycles and seasons of uncomfortable transformation? Being a human being living a human life is not a medical condition that needs to be treated. Can we sit with our thoughts, feelings, and experiences and find value in what the world tells us are undesirable or unnecessary moments of challenging growth? Maybe these cycles in our life aren't punishment; maybe they're poetry.CONNECT WITH LOVE LETTERS AND MIXTAPESIG @LOVELETTERSANDMIXTAPESSpotify @LOVELETTERSANDMIXTAPESTikTok @LOVELETTERSANDMIXTAPESTwitter @LOVELETTERSNMIXEPISODE SPONSORSHIPSupport this podcast with a donation at: https://anchor.fm/love-letters-and-mixtapes/supportPlease email for advertising or sponsorship inquiries: lovelettersandmixtapes@gmail.com--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/love-letters-and-mixtapes/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/love-letters-and-mixtapes/support
Live from my backyard! Yes, that's right. I laid in the grass of my backyard and soaked up the sunshine while recording this week's episode, sacrificing audio quality for a heartfelt energy transmission. This week we explore what it means to take up emotional space, to see and be seen, to take off our masks of perfection and anchor into our authenticity. We also touch on the moments of contraction, whether big or small, when we attempt to manage ourselves or other people by making ourselves invisible or pushing others away.

This episode is a pretty tender love letter to anyone grieving the loss of an imagined future. We'll explore what happens to our self-perception when our insides don’t match our outsides in the aftermath of trauma, grief, survival mode, and fight or flight. How do we see ourselves, treat ourselves, and show up for the reality of our experience when it is far different than what we hoped for?

I often say that my walls are my wounds, but what does this mean for our personal or professional lives? When are we limiting ourselves while convincing ourselves that we are actually protecting ourselves? How does shame contribute to our walls and keep us small? One of the most powerful lessons in my own life took root in the very simple saying, "Don’t go to the hardware store for milk."
This episode explores personal accountability, boundaries, and emotional regulation by looking at those moments of anxiety when we find ourselves seeking resources, reactivity, and emotional responses from people, places, and things that are either inappropriate or don’t have what we are looking for.

For so many of us, letting support, connection, or even compliments into our lives can be a struggle. Our crisis mentality convinces us it is protecting us when in reality, it's blocking us from showing up for our lives and receiving the good things that come our way. If you find yourself struggling to believe that something or someone good could possibly be meant for you, then this episode is for you. Let's give ourselves permission to accept and receive this year and see where it takes us.

Rejection, like shame and loneliness, is one of those things that we all experience but are conditioned not to speak about. And sure, we can all admit to some rejection in our romantic partnerships, but what happens when we experience rejection from our friends, our family, or in a work environment? And what happens when rejection is the theme of your entire year, and you still don't know how to talk about it? Lucky for you, I experienced this myself and am comfortably uncomfortable sharing some lessons, missteps, and how to let go of a deeply personal story about rejection.CONNECT WITH LOVE LETTERS AND MIXTAPESIG @LOVELETTERSANDMIXTAPESSpotify @LOVELETTERSANDMIXTAPESTikTok @LOVELETTERSANDMIXTAPESTwitter @LOVELETTERSNMIXEPISODE SPONSORSHIPSupport this podcast with a donation at: https://anchor.fm/love-letters-and-mixtapes/supportPlease email for advertising or sponsorship inquiries: lovelettersandmixtapes@gmail.com--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/love-letters-and-mixtapes/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/love-letters-and-mixtapes/support
"I want to be on your side, but it's a really lonely place to be because you aren't even on your own side."
This episode explores the many layers of self-abandonment and how it shows up in our relationships with ourselves and others, whether that is through not trusting ourselves, people-pleasing, perfectionism, harsh criticism, unworthiness, numbing ourselves, abandoning our values and integrity, co-dependent relationships, or not using our voice. We also explore the intoxicating impulse to base our emotional state on others through hyper-vigilance and judgment.
This episode is about writing ourselves a new story where we can show up as we are and know that we are enough.

Do we want to be right, or do we want to be in right relationship with ourselves and others? This is the primary question we explore in this episode as we shine a light on some of the ways we are showing up for difficult conversations that may actually be harming our relationships more than helping them. We discuss maladaptive coping mechanisms, the 5 E's of perception and communication, and tools for stepping away from the stories we tell ourselves about other people.

Welcome to the Sunday Morning Sobriety Series!
Many of you have reached out to me with questions about physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional sobriety. And so I thought that I would add a mini-episode every Sunday morning to explore aspects of sobriety and all the different modalities and practices that we have come to know about healing and recovery from any kind of addiction.
I am by no means the final word on sobriety and recovery, but I am happy to share what I know, keep the conversation open, and stay curious and teachable.
So whether it is sobriety from drugs, alcohol, or behaviors that are impacting your ability to function like gambling addiction or sex addiction, whether you are curious about mental and emotional sobriety from people places, and things or you identify as an adult child of an alcoholic, addiction, or dysfunctional family, this space on Sunday mornings is for you.

The topic for this episode is having the courage and strength to be gentle with ourselves and others.
And you might think, what does being gentle have to do with courage, or you might think “of course, I’m gentle with myself and others. I love my friends, I love my family, or I love my partner. They know that.” But the reason I wanted to speak about this today is that this topic goes beyond how we feel about the people in our lives or how we react to them. Having the courage to be gentle with ourselves and others is a way of looking at ourselves and the world and it’s about making a commitment to ourselves instead of making a commitment to another person. Having the courage to be gentle with ourselves and others is less about restraint and more about liberation.

A love letter from my heart to yours. I want you to know that it's okay to not be okay right now. If you are feeling isolated, lonely, misunderstood, disconnected, anxious or simply just confused, then this episode is for you.
We all have things we think we can't or shouldn't say out loud - feelings too big for our bodies.
I hope you know that there's room for you here.
There's room for all of you.
Sometimes, it's the worst or most unattractive things about us, the things we think will push people away, which end up being exactly what someone else needs to hear to feel safe, seen, and connected.
Something to think about at the end of the world (and the start of a new one).

"Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others."
What is needed to make intentional and impactful amends?
Are we living the promises and expecting the 12 steps to simply unfold in our lives, or are we working the 12 steps and allowing the promises to unfold in our lives? What is the difference?

The obstacles we encounter on this journey can look like:
But, if we can move through these obstacles, this step leads us out of isolation and into connection.

We have all had moments when it was difficult to look at ourselves in the mirror, when it was a challenge to be accountable for our own behavior, and when the story we told ourselves about a situation was so much louder than reality.
Why are we running away from ourselves? How does this impact our relationships? How does this impact our physical, mental, and emotional health?
In this episode, we explore coming back home to ourselves and strengthening our ability to access connection and vulnerability in our relationships.
"I am personally convinced that the basic search of every human being, from the cradle to the grave, is to find at least one other human being before whom he can stand completely naked, stripped of all pretense or defense, and trust that person not to hurt him, because that other person has stripped himself naked, too.”

“Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.”
A difficult but necessary part of sobriety and peace of mind, this step introduces us to honesty, openness, and willingness in action. We begin to shift our relationships with God, other people, and ourselves. We chip away at our sense of isolation, receive forgiveness and learn how to give it. We gain honesty and realism about ourselves and learn about humility and the danger of rationalization.

This is such a deeply personal episode for me. I even share a journal entry from this week. If you are going through something similar, I hope you feel seen, heard, and supported.
Are we able to let good things happen in our lives? Do we automatically assume it must be a mistake, scam, trick, or just something good that will happen before something bad inevitably happens? Can we meet calamity and opportunity with serenity? How can we come to terms with being chosen after a lifetime of choosing ourselves?
These are just some of the questions we explore in this episode as well as a 5 step plan to navigate anxiety we have around our own imposter syndrome.

What are emotional blackouts and emotional hangovers? In this episode, we explore how our emotions and the stories we tell ourselves about people, places, and things can distort our perception and cause a physiological reaction that we have to recover from. In this episode, we are exploring rest, relaxation, restoration, and recreation.
Before we dive into any of it, we ask ourselves the burning question, "Are we allowed to rest?" How has an aggressive hustle and grind culture impacted our cycles of self-care and self-regulation? How do our experiences with imposter syndrome or as adult children of alcoholics distort our perception about the availability of rest? Do we have to monetize every passion? Can we just play, even as adults?
