Lee Hildebrand: "That Jon Hammond, an obscure B-3 organ player who recently relocated from New York to Berkeley (where he'd grown up ni the 60s), was able to get the famous drummer to fly in for the Kimball's engagement was an impressive feat. Completing
the quartet, which Hammond calls the Late Rent Session Men, were his buddy of
some thirty years, onetime Crusaders and Miles Davis guitarist
Barry Finnerty (who just moved from New York to Oakland), and veteran Bay Area tenor saxophonist Bennett Friedman.
Whether playing swing, shuffle, bossa nova, or funk patterns, Purdie served as a springboard for his cohorts' solos, his sly, surprise-filled accents on chorus turn-arounds lifting them to peak after peak of excitement. Finnerty's scorching, fast-fingered flights unfortunately were obscured in the sound mix till near the end of the often-incendiary ninety-minute set of Hammond originals, but Friedman's muscular, barking hard-bop attack eut through like a switchblade throughout. With his clean, fleet articulation and judicious use of dynamics, Hammond proved a commanding organist of the Jimmy Smith school. His move back to the Bay Area is most welcome, as is Finnerty's."

The Theme Building is a structure at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), considered an architectural example of the Space Age design style. Influenced by "Populuxe" architecture, it is an example of the Mid-century modern design movement later to become known as "Googie".[2] The Airport Theme Building Exterior and Interior was designated as a historic-cultural monument in 1993 by the city
The distinctive white building resembles a flying saucer that has landed on its four legs.[4] The initial design was created by James Langenheim, of Pereira & Luckman,[3] subsequently taken to fruition by a team of architects and engineers headed by William Pereira and Charles Luckman, that also included Paul Williams and Welton Becket. The civil engineer was Richard Bradshaw.
The appearance of the building's signature crossed arches as homogeneous structures is a design illusion, created by topping four steel-reinforced concrete legs extending approximately 15 feet above the ground with hollow stucco-covered steel trusses. To counteract earthquake movements, the Theme Building was retrofitted in 2010 with a tuned mass damper without changing its outward appearance.[5]
Constructed near the beginning of the Space Age, the building is an example of how aeronautics and pop culture, design and architecture came together in Los Angeles.
The original design for the airport created by Pereira & Luckman in 1959 had all the terminal buildings and parking structures connected to a huge glass dome, which would serve as a central hub for traffic circulation. The plan was eventually scaled down considerably, and the terminals were constructed elsewhere on the property.[7] The Theme Building was subsequently built to mark the spot intended for the dome structure, as a reminder of the original plan.
A $4 million renovation, with retro-futuristic interior and electric lighting designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, was completed before the Encounter Restaurant opened there in 1997. Visitors are able to take an elevator up to the Observation Level to get a 360-degree view of arriving and departing planes.[11] An airport spokeswoman said that because of its appearance and views, some people thought it revolved after visiting it, even though it did not.[12]
After the September 11 attacks, the Observation Level was closed for security reasons. Following a $12.3 million restoration of the building completed in 2010, the observation level re-opened to the public on Saturdays and Sundays starting July 10.[13] Additionally, on September 9, 2003, a permanent memorial honoring those who perished in the attacks of September 11 was opened on the grounds of the Theme Building.[14]
The Encounter Restaurant closed for business in December 2013 with no future plans to reopen, although the building's observation level is still open on weekends.[15] Previously, the restaurant was closed in March 2007 for repairs after a half-ton piece of the stucco skin on the upper arches crashed onto the roof of the restaurant, and reopened on November 12, 2007.[16]Delaware North Companies Travel Hospitality Services operated the restaurant.[17]The restaurant being in a non-secure area of the airport, where travelers are reluctant to spend time when a possibly lengthy security checkpoint lay ahead, or leave after being screened and have to go through security again upon returning,[18] was cited as a reason for closing.[15]
In 2018, the Bob Hope USO at LAX relocated to the ground floor of the Theme Building, opening a 7,100 square foot facility described by its president as "the most technologically advanced USO in existence.

JOHN PIETARO JPIETARO@LOCAL802AFM.ORG Local 802 member Jon Hammond playing on Local 802’s newly-acquired Hammond model D organ at a recent Monday night jam session
Serving as Local 802’s director of organizing encompasses many aspects beyond those assumed when I initially accepted the job, not the least of which is that my office is the destination for calls our switchboard operator Judy might otherwise not know how to dispatch. One such call that came up recently was from longtime member Brien Brannigan. His outreach was singularly welcome: “Hello, I have a 1949 Hammond Organ model D with bench, bass pedals & J-20 tone cabinet that I’d like to donate.”
As a resident amateur historian in these parts, I made immediate plans to visit this fine instrument which, as Brien explained, had been a gift from his father many years before. “I’m a guitarist,” he explained, “but he purchased this organ for a recording studio I owned.” And it followed Brien to several such locations before landing in one within the Times Square area. “The studio has been sold and the new owners aren’t interested in keeping the Hammond. I guess times changed,” he stated, thoughtfully, “but I couldn’t rest until I knew it would get a good home.”
For those versed in organ lore, Hammond is legendary, its rich, all-encompassing sound reigning over countless jazz, R&B, and rock recordings. While the model B-3 was and remains the top of the line, the company manufactured several models that maintained the quite magical inner workings with differences only of size and ornamentation. Which brings us to 802’s latest acquisition. “The model D had all of the features of the B but was simpler,” Brannigan informed me “because it was designed for the military.” Wow. Well, clearly not on the frontlines; imagine Jimmy Smith (the pioneer), Brother Jack McDuff, Larry Young, Shirley Scott, Jon Lord (Deep Purple), Al Kooper or Booker T. tearing down and setting up this instrument for each battlefield advance. Regardless, our model D has much in common with the B-3. While we have the original tone cabinet (check out those woofers), Hammond hadn’t yet purchased the Leslie company when our instrument was made. Like the earlier instruments, our organ has settings for vibrato and other effects, as well as a wealth of sounds.
Long-time Local 802 member Jon Hammond may not be part of the organ-manufacturing family, but he is one of the masters of the instrument, performing over decades here and in LA, among other locations. Many thanks to Jon for giving our wonderful Hammond model D a basic tune-up.
The instrument’s powerful majesty was on full display on August 21st at the first Jazz Foundation Monday Night Jam Session we’ve hosted in several years. The crowd was filled with improvisers and the response to the instrument was wonderful.
“I’m real happy JFA Monday nights are back at the good old 802 Club Room!” Hammond remarked. Looking over his handiwork, Jon explained a bit more about the instrument: “The organ dates back to 1939; it’s built like a Sherman tank – a real piece of history, no doubt about it.”
In this article, I’ve listed a handful of Hammond giants already. For your listening pleasure, please check out these musicians and their wealth of brilliant recordings. And while we’re at it, here are more wizards of the instrument: Alice Coltrane (the visionary!), Joe Zawinul (pre-synth with Cannonball Adderly), Lonnie Smith, Gregg Alan Rolie (Santana), Isaac Hayes, Richard Groove Holmes, Rod Argent (the Zombies), Fats Waller, Joey DeFrancesco, Vincent Crane (the Crazy World of Arthur Brown), Sly Stone, Ray Manzarek (the Doors), Paul Shaffer, Ken Pearson (Janis Joplin), and far too many others to even fit within this column.
On behalf of Local 802, greatest appreciation to you, Brien Brannigan, and in turn, to your father.
NOTE: The Jazz Foundation of America MONDAY NIGHT JAM series returned to Local 802’s Club Room as of August 21 and we will continue to cherish this time-honored tradition on the third Monday of each month. Live the history — join us for this series as well as our own 802 JAZZ NIGHTS (on the second Monday of each month). I was there in the front row 56 years ago when The Chambers Brothers came first time to San Francisco State University San Francisco State Folk Festival March of 1967 - they blew everybody's mind! Peace and Love everybody - I'm very happy to report Willie Chambers is doing great and still performing in So. CA! - Jon Hammond #thechambersbrothers #timehascometoday #time #SmashHit
The band scored its only major hit in the fall of 1968 with "Time Has Come Today", an 11-minute opus written by Joe and Willie Chambers and highlighted by echoing vocal effects and Keenan's drumming which gave the song a psychedelic feel. "Time Has Come Today" was edited for release as a single and spent five consecutive weeks in September–October at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, just missing the Top Ten.Willie Chambers (born March 3, 1938) is a singer, guitarist, and former member of The Chambers Brothers, a rock band in the 1960s with hits "In The Midnight Hour", "I Can't Turn You Loose", and "Time Has Come Today". He continues to be a regular attraction at various venues in Los Angeles and further afield.Later incarnations of the group included session guitarist Steve Hunter (known for his work with Alice Cooper) An album recorded in 1972 for Columbia, Oh! My God, has remained unreleased until October 28, 2022 when it was finally made available through multiple digital platforms. Although the group disbanded in 1972, they reformed and moved from Columbia to Avco Records and released Unbonded (1974) and Right Move (1975). In 1976 the brothers released Recorded Live In Concert on Mars for the Roxbury label. They have toured irregularly since. They were signed to support Maria Muldaur on her Gospel Nights album. They also made commercials for Levi's Jeans.Originally from Carthage, Mississippi,[3] the Chambers Brothers first honed their skills as members of the choir in their Baptist church. This arrangement ended in 1952 when the eldest brother, George, was drafted into the Army. George relocated to Los Angeles after his discharge, and his brothers soon joined him. Beginning in 1954, the foursome played gospel and folk music throughout the Southern California region, but remained little known until 1965 when they began performing in New York City.Consisting of George (September 26, 1931 – October 12, 2019) on washtub bass (later on bass guitar Danelectro and Gibson Thunderbird), Lester (b. April 13, 1940) on harmonica, and Willie (b. March 3, 1938) and Joe (b. August 22, 1942) on guitar, the group started to venture outside the gospel circuit, playing at coffeehouses that booked folk acts. They played at places like The Ash Grove, a very popular Los Angeles folk club. It became one of their favorite haunts and brought them into contact with Hoyt Axton, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Reverend Gary Davis, and Barbara Dane.[6] When Dane spotted the brothers there, she knew they would be perfect to do these freedom songs that people wanted to hear then. Dane became a great supporter, performing and recording with the brothers. With the addition of Brian Keenan (January 28, 1943 – October 5, 1985) on drums, Dane took them on tour with her and introduced them to Pete Seeger, who helped put the Chambers Brothers on the bill of the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. One of the songs they performed, "I Got It", appeared on the Newport Folk Festival 1965 compilation LP, which was issued on the Vanguard label.Lester moved to New York and formed a band with former Electric Flag bassist Harvey Brooks. Guitarists Willie and Joe would find work as session men; George went back to singing gospel music and would later become a deacon of his church. Keenan retired to Stamford, Connecticut where he set up his own recording studio, and died of heart failure in 1985American Session Drummer, Lee Szymborski, also from Stamford Connecticut, was hired by George Chambers to replace Brian Keenan in 1980, in Los Angeles, CA., and performed live with The Chambers Brothers at the Hollywood Bowl's Fourth Annual Survival Sunday Anti-Nuclear Benefit Concert, with Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Stephen Stills, Bonnie Raitt, Graham Nash, Gary U.S. Bonds, Peter Yarrow, Kenny Rankin and others in Los Angeles, CA. on June 14, 1981. Lee Szymborski also performed live with The Chambers Brothers and Etta James for two shows at McCabe's Guitar Shop, 3101 Pico Blvd. Santa Monica, CA. July 16, 1981. Lee Szymborski left The Chambers Brothers and joined the critically acclaimed Louisiana Cajun group; "The Savery Brothers" in San Diego, CA.; also playing recording sessions notably with Legendary Country Music Artists Merle Haggard, Doug Kershaw, Johnny Paycheck, Asleep at the Wheel, and Juice Newton. Lee Szymborski currently records and performs in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2006, guitarist Willie Chambers sat in with a group called Vince and the Invinceables at a benefit concert for Arthur Lee of the group Love and delivered an acclaimed performance. In 2015, Joe Chambers was appearing at venues such as Harold's Place on Pacific Ave. San Pedro as The Joe Chambers Experience.[In 2016, Willie, Joe, and occasionally George, along with their nephew Jerry Warner on bass, Crazy Tomes on guitar, and LA drummer Jon McCracken, reformed as the Chambers Brothers to do shows in the Los Angeles area;[20][21] including the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live.[22]George Chambers died October 12, 2019, at age 88.Joe Chambers collaborated with Marva Holiday, recording their version of "To Love Somebody".Summer of SoulIn 2021 the Chambers Brothers appeared in the Questlove music documentary "Summer of Soul," about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival.MembersIn 1970, there was some confusion whether The Chambers Brothers were still with their label, Columbia. The source was an article in the March 28, 1970 issue of Record World. Apparently, singer Judd Hamilton was at a party for an American International Records signing and there was confusion about the Chambers Brothers signing to the label and whether or not Hamilton was a member of the group. The next issue of Record World, (April 4) clarified that The Chambers Brothers were not with the American International label and were still with Columbia Records. It also stated that Hamilton was not a member of The Chambers Brothers. There was another error, this time by Cashbox magazine, in the April 18 issue. Cliff Chambers who had his own label Cyclone Records and composed “Finders Keepers” and “Somebody Ought to Write a Book” was credited with being a member of The Chambers Brothers while he was signing a contract with Kent Records. The error was picked up and Cashbox wrote in the May 9 issue (Cliff Chambers Not Ex-Chambers) that the group's manager, Charles H. LaMarr said that Cliff Chambers was never a member of the group and that the Chambers' included Joseph Chambers, George Chambers, Willie Chambers and Brian Keenan.John Castellano joined the band as a guitarist, touring with them during 1971 and 1972. This came about as a result of the brothers finding out that Castellano's mother made the clothes that Jimi Hendrix wore. They headed out to Bath Avenue, in Brooklyn to have the clothes fitted and heard Castellano playing on guitar. Eventually Castellano came on board. Very sadly Tony Bennett died today, as I told the story many times when I met Tony, I said "Hi Tony, my name is Jon Hammond - I'm from San Francisco!" So right away he paid attention on me, and I told him, "Tony, I left my CAR in San Francisco" he said, oh man I never heard that one before! He was a beautiful cat - you can see some photos when we joined him at the NEA Jazz Masters gathering at the Sheraton Hotel in NYC - and my friend Bobbi Sacks Marcus DeSouza is getting Tony's attention for a photo opp at a special ASCAP event honoring Quincy Jones a few years ago - that's my Hammond Report for today folks, remembering the great Tony Bennett!
Have a beautiful weekend, I'll be back real soon,

#stdupont #JonHammond The song was not an immediate success, and Keith Prowse, Maschwitz's agent, refused to publish it, releasing the copyright to Maschwitz himself – a stroke of luck for the lyricist. Writing in 1957, he claimed to have made £40,000 from the song. Despite being featured in Spread it Abroad, a London revue of 1936, it aroused no interest until the famous West Indian pianist and singer Leslie Hutchinson ("Hutch") discovered it on top of a piano in Maschwitz's office at the BBC. "Hutch" liked it and recorded it, whereupon it became a great success and was recorded by musicians all over the world. This first recording by "Hutch" was by HMV in 1936. Popular versions in the USA in 1936 were by Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson with Billie Holiday, Nat Brandywynne, Carroll Gibbons and Joe Sanders. Billie Holiday's rendering of the song with Teddy Wilson's orchestra was a favorite of Philip Larkin, who said, "I have always thought the words were a little pseudo-poetic, but Billie sings them with such passionate conviction that I think they really become poetry." Holiday's version of the song peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart.

Thanks god main man Chuggy CarterLeslie J. Carter came out again to play our 2023 NAMM Show Kickoff concert - Chuggy's been playing on my band faithfully since August of 1989, he knows my music in his sleep and always has my back! Congas and Percussion Master! I have always been a fan of Chuggy Carter's playing, we finally got to start working together when I got a 5-nighter at NY's premier live music restaurant club Mikell's on Colombus Avenue & 97th Street - I had my 1959 Hammond B3 there, on the band then: Bernard Purdie, Alex Foster, Barry Finnerty, Chuggy and myself at the B3 - the club was full of great musicians including the late greats Hugh Masekela, Cornell Dupree
(Cornell sat in with us) and that was the beginning of a longtime great association and besides being one of the best congueros, Chuggy is a great friend above and beyond the call of duty on a gig! Chuggy plays GON BOPS instuments for some years now - but he can make the groove on everything and anything including a chair or even with just his hands - thank you Chuggy!! - Jon Hammond - Jon Hammond Band - Jon Hammond Organ Group

Surack was born in Waverly, Ohio, his family later relocating to Fort Wayne, Indiana. Surack was active in the Boy Scouts,[3] and attended Wayne High School, where he played saxophone in the school's marching band. Following high school, Surack toured with a band as a saxophone player and keyboardist.[4] In 1979 Surack decided to stop touring, and returned to his hometown of Fort Wayne, where he has continued to work as a musician to the present day, playing saxophone and keyboard as part of two bands, Prime Time[5] and the Sweetwater All Stars.[6] Upon settling back in Fort Wayne in 1979, Surack created a mobile 4-track recording studio within his Volkswagen Bus.

Louie Bellson Interview With Jon Hammond HammondCast on CBS KYOU / KYCY Radio - August 2003, he appeared at Jazz Club Nouveau in San Francisco with tenor saxophonist Don Menza -
Louie Bellson (born Luigi Paolino Alfredo Francesco Antonio Balassoni, July 6, 1924 – February 14, 2009), often seen in sources as Louis Bellson, although he himself preferred the spelling Louie, was an American jazz drummer. He was a composer, arranger, bandleader, and jazz educator, and is credited with pioneering the use of two bass drums.[1]
Bellson performed in most of the major capitals around the world. Bellson and his wife, actress and singer Pearl Bailey[2] (married from 1952 until Bailey's death in 1990), had the second highest number of appearances at the White House (only Bob Hope had more).
Bellson was a vice president atRemo, a drum company.[3]He was inducted into theModern DrummerHall of Fame in 1985
Bellson was born in Rock Falls, Illinois, in 1924, where his father owned a music store. He started playing drums at three years of age. While still a young child, Bellson's father moved the family and music store to Moline, Illinois.[5] At 15, he pioneered using two bass drums at the same time, a technique he invented in his high school art class.[6] At age 17, he triumphed over 40,000 drummers to win the Slingerland National Gene Krupa contest.[7]
In an interview in 2005 with Jazz Connection magazine, he cited as influences Jo Jones, Sid Catlett, and Chick Webb. "I have to give just dues to two guys who really got me off on the drums – Big Sid Catlett and Jo Jones. They were my influences. All three of us realized what Jo Jones did and it influenced a lot of us. We all three looked to Jo as the 'Papa' who really did it. Gene helped bring the drums to the foreground as a solo instrument. Buddy was a great natural player. But we also have to look back at Chick Webb's contributions, too."[9]
During the 1960s, he returned to Ellington's orchestra for Emancipation Proclamation Centennial stage production, My People in and for A Concert of Sacred Music, which is sometimes called The First Sacred Concert. Ellington called these concerts "the most important thing I have ever done."[10]
Bellson's albumThe Sacred Music of Louie Bellson and the Jazz Balletappeared in 2006. In May 2009, Francine Bellson toldThe Jazz Joy and Roysyndicated radio show, "I like to call (Sacred) 'how the Master used two maestros,'" adding, "When (Ellington) did his sacred concert back in 1965 with Louie on drums, he told Louie that the sacred concerts were based on 'in-the-beginning,' the first three words of the bible." She recalled how Ellington explained to Louie that "in the beginning there was lightning and thunder and that's you!" Ellington exclaimed, pointing out that Louie's drums were the thunder. Both Ellington and Louie, says Mrs. Bellson, were deeply religious. "Ellington told Louie, 'You ought to do a sacred concert of your own' and so it was," said Bellson, adding, "'The Sacred Music of Louie Bellson' combines symphony, big band and choir, while 'The Jazz Ballet' is based on the vows of Holy Matrimony..."
On December 5, 1971, he took part in a memorial concert at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall for drummer Frank King. This tribute show also featured Buddy Rich and British drummer Kenny Clare. The orchestra was led by Irish trombonist Bobby Lamb and American trombonist Raymond Premru. A few years later, Rich (often called the world's greatest drummer) paid Bellson a compliment by asking him to lead his band on tour while he (Rich) was temporarily disabled by a back injury. Bellson accepted.
As a prolific creator of music, both written and improvised, his compositions and arrangements (in the hundreds) embrace jazz, jazz/rock/fusion, romantic orchestral suites, symphonic works and a ballet. Bellson was also a poet and a lyricist. His only Broadway venture, Portofino (1958), was a resounding flop that closed after three performances.[13]
As an author, he published more than a dozen books on drums and percussion. He was at work with his biographer on a book chronicling his career and bearing the same name as one of his compositions, "Skin Deep". In addition, "The London Suite" (recorded on his album Louie in London) was performed at the Hollywood Pilgrimage Bowl before a record-breaking audience. The three-part work includes a choral section in which a 12-voice choir sings lyrics penned by Bellson. Part One is the band's rousing "Carnaby Street", a collaboration with Jack Hayes.[14]
In 1987, at the Percussive Arts Society convention in Washington, D.C., Bellson andHarold Farbermanperformed a major orchestral work titled "Concerto for Jazz Drummer and Full Orchestra", the first piece ever written specifically for jazz drummer and full symphony orchestra. This work was recorded by theBournemouth Symphony Orchestrain England, and was released by the Swedish labelBIS.
Bellson was known throughout his career to conduct drum and band clinics at high schools, colleges and music stores.[16]
Bellson maintained a tight schedule of clinics and performances of both big bands and small bands in colleges, clubs and concert halls. In between, he continued to record and compose, resulting in more than 100 albums and more than 300 compositions. Bellson's Telarc debut recording, Louie Bellson And His Big Band: Live From New York, was released in June 1994. He also created new drum technology for Remo, of which he was vice-president.[17]
Bellson received an honoraryDoctor of Humane Lettersin 1985 atNorthern Illinois University. As of 2005, among other performing activities, Bellson had visited his home town of Rock Falls, Illinois, every July for Louie Bellson Heritage Days, a weekend in his honor close to his July 6 birthday, with receptions, music clinics and other performances by Bellson.[1]At the 2004 event celebrating his 80th birthday, Bellson said, "I'm not that old; I'm 40 in this leg, and 40 in the other leg."[18]He celebrated his birthday every year at theRiver Music ExperienceinDavenport, Iowa.
Bellson was voted into the Halls of Fame for Modern Drummer magazine, in 1985, and the Percussive Arts Society, in 1978. Yale University named him a Duke Ellington Fellow in 1977. He received an honorary Doctorate from Northern Illinois University in 1985. He performed his original concert – Tomus I, II, III – with the Washington Civic Symphony in historic Constitution Hall in 1993. A combination of full symphony orchestra, big-band ensemble and 80-voice choir, "Tomus" was a collaboration of music by Bellson and lyrics by his late wife, Pearl Bailey. Bellson was a nine-time Grammy Award nominee.[19]
In January 1994, Bellson received theNEA Jazz MastersAward from theNational Endowment for the Arts.[20]As one of three recipients, he was lauded by NEA chair Jane Alexander, who said, "These colossal talents have helped write the history of jazz in America."
On November 19, 1952, Bellson married American actress and singer, Pearl Bailey, in London. Bellson and Bailey adopted a son, Tony, in the mid-1950s, and a daughter, Dee Dee (born April 20, 1960).[22] Tony Bellson died in 2004, and Dee Dee Bellson died on July 4, 2009, at age 49, within five months of her father. After Bailey's death in 1990, Bellson married Francine Wright in September 1992.[23]
Wright, who had trained as a physicist and engineer at MIT,[24] became his manager. The union lasted until his death in 2009.[25]

Currently airing on Manhattan Cable's Channel 3 and San Francisco's public access Channel 25, the program is a half hour of computer generated graphics synchronized with original jazz-fusion and rock music. Hammond's voice and his tapping boot are the only human intrusions during the show. "It's an alternative to the conceptual and concert footage videos. We're delivering an art form." says the show's host, BackBeat's co-founder Jon Hammond. The company also functions as a label, and Hammond says the broadcast will be a vehicle to expose artists on the BackBeat roster. Hammond say's he's close to securing slots on public access channels in New Orleans, Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles and Boston and plans to recoup investements by syndicating the show to national networks if and when it gains an audience. His partner in the venture is former Crusaders guitarist Barry Finnerty, who wrote the music for the first program. All songs on the "Jon Hammond Show" feature BackBeat's studio band of Finnerty, keyboardist Hammond, drummer Steve Ferrone and saxophonist Todd Anderson. KIM FREEMAN"

12/12 - a date that for me went down in to infamy - it was 12/12/1989 when I managed to pull off this gig in the Indigo Blues Club on W. 46th Street in the basement of Hotel Edison - it was partly owned by Miles Davis and some mafia cats. I put a quartet together with Bernard Purdie drums, Alex Foster tenor, one of the greatest jazz guitarist in the world Jack Wilkins and yours truly Jon Hammond at the Hammond B3, it became necessary at that time for me to change guitar players - I got the B3 down there and Joe Berger shot my PV-430D camera and sat in on guitar - Scott Cooper shot some video also - it was a cold night in December and I was down to my last bucks - down even further after the gig - almost everybody who came said theyw ere on a non-existant guest list and we didn't have anyone to cover the door - they just walked right in and sat right down don't ya' know. No business like the music business folks - I'm on TV tonight at my usual time slot 01:30 AM - 2AM late Friday night / wee hours of Saturday, we are the night people! "More than 8,500 of The NewsGuild’s 26,000+ members have joined since 2015 at more than 120 newly unionized publications and organizations.
Our newest members are part of a surge in organizing among communications employees across the U.S. and Canada – at publications as big as the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune and as small as the Casper Star-Tribune, and in places with a strong union tradition (like Allentown’s Morning Call) and in states without a big union presence (like Texas’ Dallas Morning News and the Austin American-Statesman, Virginia’s Roanoke Times and Florida’s Miami Herald, Orlando Sentinel and Palm Beach Post).
The recent rise in union organizing is in response to turmoil in the industry that has left many of us with low wages, a daunting workload and little or no input at work. And the upheaval – which has been intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic – has undermined our ability to hold the powerful accountable and to tell the stories of our communities."

"High Commissioner of South Africa Kumalo Mpendulo hosted the 21st Freedom Day reception at Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, sharing the momentous anniversary with members of the diplomatic corps, many Pakistanis and a handful of South Africans living here.
The Freedom Day marks the day in 1994 when the first democratic and non-racial national elections were held in South Africa, when everyone over the age of 18, of any race, including non-citizens, was allowed to vote. It was also the day that 21 years ago the African National Congress was voted into power and Nelson Mandela was elected president a fortnight later."
I hope my friend Hary Lin from Augsburg got better - I just saw this item about Hary and his wife Cecile - "Musician Hary Lin suffered a stroke in 2013 and his wife a heart attack. They never gave up and Wednesday is Harry's birthday.
The couple now describe what happened in early March 2013 as “the catastrophe”. Musician Hary Lin suffered a stroke and his wife suffered a heart attack when he was rescued. As a result, both were "on life and death" in the clinic in a coma - only floors apart. But together they fought their way back to life in the past four years. Today, Wednesday, the guitarist celebrates his 66th birthday."
Sending my most powerful healing wishes to Hary & his wife! - Jon Hammond

In New York City, from the close of the ’60s through the birth and death of disco, Mediasound was a hit machine. Founded by Harry Hirsch, with assistance from Bob Walters and financial/business backing from owners Joel Roseman and the late John Roberts, Mediasound opened in June 1969 at 311 West 57th St. in the heart of Manhattan. Once home to the Manhattan Baptist Church, today the site is occupied by Providence (formerly the trendy Le Bar Bat), where you can still see the Gold Records on the wall.
I put Barry Finnerty's old guitar case that came with his Gibson Johnny Smith guitar in front of the AFM Local 6 musicians union on 9th street - it was shot - to see how long it would take 'til somebody walked with it: 5 minutes. A cover version by the Buckinghams, who added lyrics, also reached No. 5 on the charts.
