God works in our lives in ways we aren't always prepared for. That is part of Mary Ann's story. She didn't expect to get baptized on Easter Sunday, nor did she even expect to end up at Pathway. But, both happened.
Mary Ann responded to baptism as the Holy Spirit moved during our 2024 Easter Service. She is one of the reasons we offer spontaneous baptisms during our services. When someone responds in the moment, we don't always get to hear their story publicly. Today, though, we get to hear from Mary Ann as she shares this journey of over 30 years that brought her to this moment during an Easter Service here at Pathway.

We’re starting a new sermon series today that we’re calling Down to Earth. It will certainly be a celebration of the fact that Jesus left the glories of heaven and came to our planet. But it’s more than that. It will also focus on the fact that Jesus Himself, as well as the message of the season, is Down to Earth. That is to say, it is not mysterious and theoretical and difficult to understand...it is practical and accessible for every one of us.
Throughout the season, we’re going to focus on four different themes or topics, all of which center on practical truths of Christmas. We’re going to get that started by looking at the truth that: GOD HAS A PLAN.
The Scriptures tell us many benefits of thanksgiving, but you might be interested to know that science has also gotten on the bandwagon of the benefits of living thankful. Sources from Psychology Today to the Mayo Clinic agree that when we live thankful lives it will reduce depression, lessen anxiety, support heart health, relieve stress, boost immunity, improve your mood and it will even help you sleep! Those are some powerful truths about living thankful in the physical mental and emotional realm. But there are even more powerful truths when it comes to living thankful in the spiritual realm.
Today we conclude our Future You series as Pastor Jeff shares a message with us called "LIVING THANKFUL."
What does it mean to live with FULL SURRENDER? We would love for Pathway to be marked by people who are fully surrendered. But that’s not something that just happens. It requires some very intentional steps...and some that can be elusive, even in the church. So, how do we get there?

Over the last 8 months, we’ve been taking a very close look at the Gospel of Mark in the New Testament. A gospel is an account of the life of Jesus. And in our study, we’ve been considering what it looks like to be a genuine follower of Jesus. Today, we are concluding our series as we look at the last topic Mark addresses: the resurrection of Jesus.
You’ve heard of Christmas in July? This is Easter in August. This is all about the resurrection of Jesus. We’re going to see that there were a number of different reactions to it.
We all go through things in life where we have the best of intentions and wind up feeling the heat, when it seems that no one is there to join us or even have our back, and we realize we have stepped into something that really stinks and we don’t want to do it anymore. We find ourselves suffering and we lack the endurance to keep going.
It can be parenting, it can be a job, it can be a conversation with a friend, it can be marriage, it can be the decision to leave church, it can be the decision to come to church.
And the thing is, in our lives and in these days, suffering is not going away. The question for the follower of Jesus is not how we can avoid suffering. If you are listening today hoping all your troubles will go away you will be disappointed. Ask the people around you. Following Jesus doesn’t mean less suffering. It often means more...especially the more we look like Jesus. And the question followers of Jesus should be asking is not how we can avoid suffering but how we can learn to suffer well.
Today Pastor Jason continues our sermon series FOLLOW in the Gospel of Mark, preaching a message titled The Example of Endurance.
Last week we saw Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane with the disciples while He was praying earnestly, and the disciples were sleeping. It was there that Judas came out and betrayed Jesus with a kiss, which led to Jesus being captured. Jesus is then carted off, and even though it is the middle of the night, Jesus is immediately put on trial. And that’s where our passage begins this week, in Mark 14:53-72.
This message is titled The Witness Stand and continues our FOLLOW series through the New Testament Gospel of Mark.
This week we look at Mark 14:32-52 and the drama of Gethsemane. The setting for this drama is a place called the Garden of Gethsemane, which was a place right just across the valley from the temple and the city of Jerusalem on what is known as the Mount of Olives. This drama is described for us in a few scenes and through them, we’re going to see the final events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion really set into motion. As we do, we’re going to see the actions and reactions of several of the characters in this drama.

As we continue on in our FOLLOW series through the Gospel of Mark, preaching through Mark 14:12-31, we have now come to Thursday of that final week of Jesus's life. We are now just about 24 hours away from Jesus’ death. It’s at this time that Jesus has a very special meal with His disciples. It’s usually called “The Last Supper.” And it would be the last supper, the last meal, Jesus would have with the 12 prior to the crucifixion.
However, the last supper wasn’t just an ending. It was also a beginning. It is at the last supper that Jesus initiates the very first Lord’s supper, or communion. So today, we’re going to be talking about The Last Supper…and the First.
There are five different components to this account that lay this story out for us. Through them we are going to get a clear picture of how Communion got started and why we continue to practice it today.
The love we’re going to see expressed in Mark 14:1-11 is from a woman who comes up a few times in the New Testament, and each time we see an unusual and powerful sort of love. Hers is an Exemplary Love. If you look at a dictionary definition of exemplary, it says, “Serving as a desirable model; representing the best of its kind.” We are going to see both of those things. This love we’ll see represents the best of its kind and it is definitely a model for us all.

If you stop to think about it, we spend a lot of time watching. We watch for all sorts of things. We watch for who the Steelers are going to draft, or who the Pirates will draft this weekend with the #1 overall pick in the MLB draft. We watch for news of Supreme Court decisions, or the rescue of a soccer team trapped in a flooded cave a few years ago.
We certainly spend a lot of time watching, and in today’s text, we’re going to see Jesus add some other things to the list that we should watch for. It’s pretty obvious that the things Jesus wants the disciples, and others, to watch for are things that are yet future for them. You don’t watch for things that have already happened. And as we’ll see, this chapter is all about the future. Some of that future is going to happen a little sooner, and some a lot later, but either way, Jesus says it is very important that they would be watching.

What really matters to you? A lot of surveys have asked that question. One was done by Pew Research and theirs revealed that what really matters to about 75% of people is spending time with family. The next highest response was practicing your faith…but less than 1/3 of people said it really mattered.
Now, long before Pew Research was asking what really matters, an important leader was asking the same thing. But his inquiry wasn’t directed at a group of people…it was asked of just One. This is a person who heard Jesus teaching and saw that He had great wisdom, so he came to Him and asked, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” (Mark 12:28). Which one really matters most?

In Mark 11:27-12:27 we’re going to see Jesus being tested. In fact, this message is called “Testing Jesus” because of what we'll see. We are going to see three different groups of people, all of whom are putting Jesus to the test and seeing if they might be able to trap Him in His words and thus fail the test put to Him. And, in each case, the response of Jesus is stunning and shows remarkable wisdom…and it’s a wisdom we can learn from.

Today, we’re going to consider some things that are very important that we’d see clearly, but the things we’re going to consider today can be difficult to see…and understand. We’ve been making our way through this whole book, one passage at a time, and today we come to one that helps us take a look at Jesus and His purpose and to see clearly what it means to follow Jesus.

Today, we’re going to meet someone we could say believed his heart was in the right place, but spoiler alert, in the end it doesn’t turn out so well. The place where we find this guy is in Mark 10:13-31. In this passage, we’re going to find that Jesus has a lot to say about the heart. And thankfully, we see much more than an example of someone who gets it wrong. In fact, the passage begins and ends with what it looks like to get it right.

What’s on your list of things that would make you great? It might feel pretty awkward to think about what would make you great, because it seems sort of prideful. But Jesus gave us some advice about how to do it and we’re going to consider what He had to say. Today we’re going to look at The Path to Greatness as we continue our FOLLOW series through the Gospel of Mark.
In recent weeks, we’ve seen Jesus transfigured before Peter, James and John. We’ve seen the disciples get a reality check on life and faith and power. They had struggled in some of those areas and it sets the stage for Jesus teaching them about the direction He would have them to go. He taught them about The Path to Greatness.

The truth is that we live our lives within a context and a culture. Both of them have influences on us, and the more dominant the context and culture, the more we can be influenced…and we live in a very dominant culture. We need to recognize that it has the power to shape how we see ourselves and how we even assess how our lives are going. Sometimes those comparisons are helpful, but what if we’re comparing ourselves against the wrong things and don’t even realize it?
Well, that’s when we need a Reality Check. It’s important that we would take a step back from time to time to take an honest look at where we are. But to do so, we need to have a standard against which we’re considering it. That’s where our passage for today comes in handy: Mark 9:14-29. It’s here that we can have a direct and honest look at where we are and get a reality check.

Mountaintop experiences are usually clarifying. They inspire and move us to commitment and action. That’s where the disciples in Mark 9:2-13 are too. However, spiritual excitement doesn’t necessarily result in clarity. And that’s something we need to open our eyes to. You see, just because we feel something strongly doesn’t mean it’s right or accurate or the direction God would have us to go. There is a discernment that is required of us that goes beyond how we feel.
In our passage, we can see that the disciples are wrestling with this. And throughout, we see Jesus trying to get them beyond the emotions of the moment to the truth that is absolutely essential if they are going to be genuine followers. We’re going to take a look at what some of those are, and see how they are timely truths for us as well. Jesus said, “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.” (Mark 8:35). That verse comes right in the heart of our passage for today. This passage at the end of Mark 8 is probably one of the least popular of all the things Jesus taught. However, if you want to be an authentic Christ follower, you have to come to grips with these verses. It lays out for us "The Cost of Discipleship." That’s what we’re going to be talking about today.

Why do we sigh? Sighing is interesting. There has been very little research done on the topic, but the research that has been done has attempted to discover why we sigh, what we’re feeling while we’re sighing, and what happens/how we feel after sighing. Though they found different sorts of sighs during different emotional feelings, Karl Teigen, in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology summed up the report: “In the prototypical case, a sigh expresses a mismatch between ideals and realities."
That is what we see Jesus navigating in our passages today, Mark 8:1-30... A Series of Mismatches. We invite you to listen in as Pastor Ben continues our sermon series, FOLLOW, looking at how Jesus steps into these mismatches and helps us to think differently.
Have you ever been told to just “get over it”? A parent might say it to a whiny child who has just dropped the scoop of ice cream off their cone…get over it…though I might whine about that too. An employer might say it to a complaining employee. And a judge might say it to a greedy plaintiff. Get over it. And today we’re going to see that there are some things going on with some people and Jesus wants them to "Get Over It."
We find these circumstances in Mark 7:1-37. It’s here that Mark records Jesus making it clear that there are certain things He wants people to prioritize over others. He says that one thing is a better path than the other. He is saying do this “over” that.

When certain conditions are present, you can expect certain outcomes. It’s predictable. This is something we can see very plainly in several encounters we are going to look at today. We’re going to see some Predictable Truths.
Now, the specific circumstances we’re going to consider took place in the 1st century, but the outcomes are as predictable today as they were then. That makes them especially important to see and understand.

There are so many things that are changing all around us, that when you find something that is both good AND lasting, it should stand out to us. It should cause us to sit up and take notice. Well, today, we want to show you exactly that. We want to show you something very powerful that is Once and For All.
To find this Once and For All circumstances, we’re going to look at some words that were originally written to a group of people called the Hebrews who were going through tremendous difficulty. Many of them were Jewish Christians who were being persecuted and the things that once seemed certain and lasting were being threatened. These words were written to encourage them about things that will never change that they can hold onto. And just as this is a good word for them, it is a good word for us.
Today's Easter sermon comes from Hebrews 9. We pray it will be an encouragement and blessing to you, and we invite you to share this with friends and family members.

As we enter into Holy Week & reflect on the journey of Jesus to the cross, we can find great hope in the reality unveiled in the scriptures that reminds us that like Jesus, though we may face suffering in this life and though we may at times feel forsaken, the love of God is unfailing. Our passages this week include Philippians 2:5-11, Matthew 27, Isaiah 50:4-9, and Psalm 31:9-16.

Today, we’re going to see the resolute Jesus in Mark 11:1-25. We’re going to see that Jesus is working to accomplish a clear purpose. It starts out nice and friendly enough, but it quickly turns, and we’ll see why it does and what Jesus is trying to accomplish in it all. Spoiler alert: He is trying to move people from a place where they were mistakenly confident in their spiritual status, to a place where they recognized their true standing before God and were challenged to do something about it.

Today, as we continue in our FOLLOW sermon series, we’re going be thinking about faith…not in pilots, or doctors, or banks, but in God. This is really important because the significance of your faith is going to determine the shape of your life. If the trajectory of your life isn’t what you wish it was, you might be tempted to set a new goal or make a new resolution. But even those things, apart from a vitalized faith, are still going to leave you empty. And that’s right where some of us are.
Today, we’re going to be thinking about "What Faith Can Do." And to do so, we’re going to turn to a passage where we see faith on display and that passage is Mark 5:21-6:6. In this passage we’re going to consider the impact of a dynamic faith and see what good it might be able to do for us. We’re going to talk about what real faith can do.
This week's Lent focus is "the Shepherd of the Blind." Our passages this week include: 1 Samuel 16:1-13, Psalm 23, John 9, and Ephesians 5:8-14. Through these passages, we focus in on our Good Shepherd and His care for His sheep. He sees us, knows our needs, and brings healing. Our shepherd is present with us, His sheep.

Welcome to the third full week of Lent. This week's Lent focus: Finding rest in Jesus.
Our passages this week include: Exodus 17:1-7, John 4, Psalm 95, and Romans 5:1-11. Through these passages we see the difference between the Israelites in their stubbornness and hardness of hearts not enter into God's rest, and we see an invitation for us to NOT be like them, but, instead, to soften our hearts and enter into God's rest. It's a beautiful invitation God extends to the woman at the well and to every single one of us.

There is something in us that believes that God is somehow, and in various ways,out to get us...that Jesus is monitoring our behavior, and when he’s around, at least, we better be at our best. And wrapped into this belief or this assumption is what we could call an unhealthy fear of God. We're not talking about a healthy fear of the Lord, which is something the Scriptures talk about, but we are talking about being afraid of God.

Jesus is an incredible storyteller. One of the greatest to have ever lived. Today as we continue our series through the Gospel of Mark, we see Jesus tell a masterful story about sowing seed. This wasn't just a regular story, but a parable pointing to a deeper truth. Jesus used a story about everyday things to communicate a much deeper truth in a way the people could understand. Jesus invites them into the work of the Gospel, not to horde the seeds, but to scatter seeds in the sharing of the Gospel and the living out of our faith.

Sometimes you can participate in the same exact experience as someone else but end up with totally different perspectives on what was happening. Interestingly enough, as we come to Mark 3:7-35, we see the same thing. In this sermon we are going to meet four different groups of people and discover that each of them have their own unique perspective on who Jesus is.
As you might expect, not all four of those groups are correct in their assessment of who Jesus really is. So, we’re going to take a look at each of them to see what we can learn about the real Jesus. In fact, that’s simply what we've called this message…The Real Jesus. This is a vital consideration, because sometimes we can lose sight of who Jesus really is and what that means for how we live our lives day-to-day. But, if we can get additional clarity on it today, it will set us up for greater understanding and for becoming better followers. And that’s what the book of Mark is all about.
So, four different groups who all think they know who the real Jesus is. We invite you to listen in and learn more about these groups and what it means for us today.

The natural progression for every one of us when it comes to establishing life’s course is that we go through some experiences, and maybe some instruction, and we form opinions that over time turn into convictions. And for the vast majority of people, the convictions they establish in their 20s or 30s are the convictions they are going to take to the grave.
Now, sometimes that’s a good thing. If you latch on to Jesus, or truth, or faithfulness, and ride it out, that has the possibility of serving you very well. But that’s not always how it happens. Sometimes the things we latch onto originate in something that is harmful. And in other cases, the origins might be good, but we get twisted in how to live that out day to day. That was a big problem with some of the people we’re going to see in our passage for today…and it can be for us as well.
In this sermon from our FOLLOW series through the Gospel of Mark, we want to invite you to soften your heart and to think again. If, at the end, you decide there’s no need for you to do anything, you can pick up right where you left off. And if you find some reason to adjust a perspective, you can do that too.
We invite you to turn to Mark 2:18-3:6 as we hear from Pastor Jeff on some areas we may need to Think Again.
Today, we’re going to talk about, The Unconventional Way. To see this, we’re going to read through Mark 1:40-2:17 as we look into three distinct encounters Jesus had and each of them is just as surprising and shocking as the one before. We’re going to see Jesus getting into the nitty-gritty of ministry among the people. And as He does, we’re going to see Him do some things that are very much out of the ordinary and caught a lot of people off guard. It was unconventional.
And as we look at Jesus’ unconventional engagement, we’re going to see that the unconventional isn’t reserved for Jesus alone. We are also called to the unconventional way. We’re going to see what that’s all about as we make our way along.

In today's sermon we’re going to be taking a look at Jesus, On Mission. Watching Jesus On Mission is very inspiring because as much as Mark focuses on Jesus’ mission, it is also clear that there is a response that is called for on the part of Jesus’ followers. And if we can get our heads around our response, we’ll be set up for living in harmony with Jesus’ mission and that is going to be a win all the way around.

Have you ever stopped to think about what are essential parts of who you are? What are some of the things that reveal who you are? Pastor Jeff shares some of his in this sermon that continues our series through the Gospel of Mark, called FOLLOW.
Through this sermon, we are going to look at the essentials of someone else. We see these essentials as we come to the text we’re going to examine today. That text is Mark 1:9-13. It is here that we are going see: The Essential Jesus.
We’re going to see two things that are essential aspects of who Jesus came to be. If we don’t understand these two things, we can’t understand Jesus, or salvation, substitutionary atonement (Jesus taking our place), or any other critical piece of the work of Jesus in our world. But if we CAN get it, all those same things will come to life for us. If we can get it, it will definitely set us up to Follow, which is what this series is all about.
Today, we’re starting a new sermon series where we’re going to look at what it means to follow Jesus. We’re simply calling it, Follow. This is going to be a study through the book of Mark in the New Testament.
The idea of following Jesus is central to this book. It is here that we read that Jesus said, “‘Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.’” (Mark 1:17). A little later we read, “And as he passed by, he saw Levi…and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’” (Mark 2:14). And later still, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34). And that’s just the start. We’re going to be taking a look at what it means to follow. And we invite you to join us, and to share with anyone else you think would benefit from this message and this series.
For many of us, when it comes to the Bible, it can seem like a mystery. And that can steal some of the desire and motivation to dig into it. But with some understanding, it can open up a whole new world. Through our sermon today, Pastor Jeff preaches a message attempting to take some of the mystery out of the Bible. If you’re one who can struggle with motivation because you find it difficult to read and understand and apply the bible, we think this message will change that. Now, as we get into this, we know that living compassionately doesn’t just happen. It won’t just develop on its own. Left to ourselves, we won’t stumble into compassion. No, to live compassionately requires that we would take some intentional steps. It requires that we would make room for it to happen in our lives.

There’s no denying we’re embarking on a very busy time of year. It would be very easy to wake up around New Years’ and wonder where December went. At Pathway this year, we’re hoping to change that. Instead of a season where important people and priorities get crowded out, we want to Make Room. We want to intentionally make room for what we hope the season would be for us and for our family.
We’re right at the beginning of the season and it is in your power to make room for whatever you want this season to be. But, it’s going to take some intentionality on your part because the momentum of the season can be pretty overwhelming. But if we set our minds on it, it can happen. You might just wake up around New Years’ and think it was the best Christmas ever.
To assist us along the way, we’re going to be focusing each week on making room for some other essentials. Drawing on the events surrounding the incarnation (Jesus coming to earth), we’re going to examine some key priorities to keep our focus where it can help us make this season as meaningful as ever. Today we’re getting started as we consider how to Make Room…To Worship Freely.
The text that we’re going to be looking at today has some very uplifting truths that we hope will encourage you. It also has some very troubling truths that will grab your attention. It is a good news, bad news text. The first 6 chapters of the book of Daniel have often been described as history. They give the historical and chronological account of Daniel and the lion’s den; Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and the fiery furnace; the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar over the nation of Babylon, and so on. But when we come to chapter 7, there is a shift. From this point on, what we find is a focus on prophecy or The Road Ahead. Chapter 2 gave us a little hint of the future with the vision of the multi-metal statue in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, but the rest of the book fleshes it out even more.
The prophecy we find in Daniel is significant. As we’ll see, it covers the period of time that immediately followed when Daniel was writing for the next several hundred years. From our vantage point, that is now history and we can take a look and see how accurate that prophecy was. But Daniel also takes a look WAY down the road to events that are still future to us…all the way to when Jesus will return again.

Today we come back to the book of Daniel to take a look at a circumstance where there was a big trial that was being faced and we’re going to see how it was approached. And since it has to do with overcoming lions, it seemed appropriate to call this message: Taming Trials.
The place where we find this account is in Daniel chapter 6. If you’re familiar with the Bible, you are familiar with this event. If you’re not familiar with the Bible, you’re still probably familiar with this event. However, even if you know the story, there are some keys to this chapter we’re going to talk about today that usually get missed altogether. We’re going to consider that today.

Last week we started a sermon series working our way through the book of Daniel in the Old Testament. In the first two chapters, we met Daniel and his three friends, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, or Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and we saw their faithfulness in the midst of great trial. We also met the king, Nebuchadnezzar who was the head of the immensely powerful kingdom of Babylon. And as chapter 2 was coming to a close, we saw that Nebuchadnezzar had a statue on his mind too. It came through a dream that Daniel interpreted for him, leading the king to set Daniel up in a high position in his kingdom.
Well, as chapter 3 opens today, there is another statue that is featured prominently in the account. This one isn’t from a dream, it’s a construction project of the king. And it is going to cause some serious issues for Daniel’s friends. It is going to put them under fire both figuratively and literally. It sets up one of the most loved and best-known events of the bible.
But they aren’t the only ones who come under fire. As we move into chapters 4 and 5, we’re going to see others who face a fire of their own. And in each case, the responses are different and teach us something different about God and how He is calling us to live.

Today, we’re beginning a new sermon series where we’re going to take the next 5 weeks to look at the book of Daniel in the OT.
The truth is that the temptation to conform in Daniel’s day was just as great as it is in our day today. That’s because conformity isn’t a cultural problem, it’s a human problem. So, when someone steps up in the midst of the pressure to conform and dares to be different, it gets our attention. And that’s just what we’re going to see as we wade into the first couple of chapters today.

Today, we are going to think together about faith. Are you a person who finds it easy or difficult to put your faith in other people or things? The truth is that the depth of our faith if fluid. It will change based on how we feel or in what we’re being asked to place our faith.
The real measure of our spiritual health is the state of our faith. If our faith is thriving, then there will be some demonstrable evidence on the surface level of our life. If our faith is growing, it’s going to show itself in our prayer and self-control and engagement in the body of Christ. If our faith is not growing, we may feel guilty about some of those outward signs and try to manufacture one or more of those attributes, but we won’t be consistent and we’ll struggle to maintain it. That’s because we’re trying to generate it out of willpower, not seeing it flow out of faith’s power.

And that leaves us with choices we need to make about how we’re going to use the time that is available to us because we can’t do everything. And it turns out the decisions we make are pretty consequential.

It might have to do with your family, your faith, your prayer life, or how you use your time. Things aren’t working very well and you don’t really like it, but you just sort of put up with it. Or, you come up with a way to make it tolerable and you just get by. You know there’s something wrong, but you don’t want to make the investment…or maybe don’t know how to make the investment to fix it or turn a corner that will give you a fresh start.
If there was a way to turn those corners and experience a fresh start, would you be interested? We’d like to believe the answer is yes and the good news is that there is a way to turn those corners and we’re going to be talking about that in this series.
The first area we’re going to be talking about has to do with relationships. Have you ever experienced a problem in any of your relationships? (friends not talking, not getting along with neighbors, your kids have an attitude toward you, things are on the rocks with your spouse…maybe it’s over). Today we move into the second half of Romans 14, continuing our series - Romans: Grace Changes Everything. Paul begins to shift his focus here from the weak in faith to the strong in faith. The first half of the chapter he wrote about specific hangups for the spirituall weak, he finished out this chapter writing to the spiritually strong and their freedom from those hangups.
Paul cautioned them in the way they live with those freedoms. And it is a good caution and reminder for us today.

Today we continue our series called Romans: Grace Changes Everything. Paul had just finished writing about our love debt toward one another and the summary of the law being in this word: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. We ended last week with this commendation from Paul: But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires (13:14).
As we begin Romans 14 today, we read that Paul wrote about opinions in verse one. The original language can be rendered differently, but basically Paul wrote about matters of opinion or disputable matters. Paul was speaking about preferences and how some preferences and differences of opinions had led to divisions in the church. It is vital to understand Paul wasn’t talking about matters of sin or salvation. He was speaking about matters of opinion. It is to those opinions we turn today as we seek to navigate how to maintain unity in eternal matters rather than division over disputable matters.

THE TIME IS NOW. That’s a little phrase you might say or hear when it is time to take some action. When it comes to our passage for today, the Apostle Paul has a message for all of us and it is also that, The Time Is Now. For a couple of chapters, Paul has been giving us some very practical and timely wisdom about how to live in the church and in the world. He has called us to make our lives a living sacrifice in service to the Lord and others. He’s told us about spiritual gifts and how we can make a contribution to the work of the church. He’s told us about learning to bring blessing in the face of persecution and how to not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. And last week we learned about what it means to live under authority, specifically that of the government and people in power.
In all of these words from Paul, there is an underlying sense of urgency in becoming the people he’s calling us to be. Well, in today’s passage, he’s going to continue to point us in the direction of full devotion to God’s purposes and he’s also going to explain the reason it is so urgent. He’s going to tell us why The Time Is Now.

They say there are two different types of people in the world…those who are rule followers and those who, if an authority lays down a rule, will feel the pull to break it. Submitting to authority is something people approach very differently. Sometimes it has to do with a smaller issue, but other times the issues involved are very consequential. Today we’re going to take a look at a situation that is definitely the latter…very consequential.
We’re in the last few chapters of the book of Romans in our sermon series, Romans: Grace Changes Everything. Today, Paul is going to talk about Living Under Authority, and the specific authority he has in mind is the authority of the government.

The Apostle Paul, the author of the book of Romans, has a real burden for the nature of the relationships we have with one another in the church. It is his desire that our relationships would be so strong that regardless of what would come up, we would have the foundation from which to overcome any hardship and move forward with unity and harmony. The first verses we’re going to look at today are going to be Paul’s instructions for making that a reality.

Today, we’re returning to our series, Romans: Grace Changes Everything. This has been a verse-by-verse study through the book of Romans in the New Testament. And as we come to our text for today, there is a major shift happening in the book. That passage is Romans 12:1-8.
As Paul turns this corner into chapter 12, he starts to get very practical. He says, “In light of all these truths about Jesus, here’s how we should live.” And spoiler alert, he says we should live Holding Nothing Back. Because here’s the bottom line: If you hold back it will hold up what God is holding out.
Paul’s going to take the rest of the letter to give us some specifics about what our lives should look like. And he doesn’t waste any time getting started. There are a few steps Paul gives us right away in chapter 12 if we’re going to be followers who are holding nothing back.

The title of today’s message is Cause and Effect. We all know what that is. If one thing happens, something else is going to result. If you eat Bruster’s Ice Cream every day, you’re going to get huge…enjoyment out of it. If you sign your children up for SonZone, they’re going to have a good time. If you leave your dog outside during your fireworks, you can get injured. That’s cause and effect and we see it in all sorts of circumstances around us.
Today, we’re going to see the principle of cause and effect lived out in the life of the Apostle Paul and he takes the opportunity to tell the people in the church in 1st century Rome all about it. You can see it too if you’ll open to Romans 11:33-36.

Do you ever find yourself saying something like, “That just doesn’t make sense”? I certainly have, because there are some things that don’t make a lot of sense to me. For instance, why is it only acceptable to eat certain foods with certain meals? Why can’t you have orange juice with dinner, or ice cream with breakfast? And why do we eat kale for ANY meal? It doesn’t make sense. Or, why does the dentist stick his/her hands in your mouth and then ask you questions? Or, why some people don’t use their turn signal. Is it too hard to do…that? Or, why does a local pizza shop close on the weekend at 8pm. I didn’t realize people actually ordered pizza before then. It doesn’t make sense.
Or, here’s one…why does it seem like God isn’t very involved in some of the things happening in our world? How are we to make sense of what He’s doing, or NOT doing?
That’s an important question and if you’re asking it, you’re not the first. That’s been on a lot of people’s minds through the years in a number of different realms. We are going to see it in the text we’re looking at today as well.

We have been in a series where we’re taking a look at the book of Romans in the New Testament. This was written to a group of people who were relatively new to the faith and they came out of vastly different religious backgrounds from one another, so Paul is trying to get them on the same page by helping them understand the basics of faith in Jesus. There were a lot of things muddying the waters and he is trying to clear it up.
Paul’s desire is that we would be clear on what the gospel consists of so we can experience its depth and blessing. It’s clear that has always been his driving motivation.
And with that, Paul is going to jump into the basics of salvation in Christ. But before he helps us understand what the basics ARE, he takes a moment to help us understand what the basics ARE NOT.

Today, we’re going to be looking at some choices. In fact, we’re calling this message, Critical Choices. That means two things, one is that the choices we’re going to look at are critical, in that they are important, and we’re also calling them critical, because there have been people who have been critical of them. The place where we find these critical choices discussed is Romans 9:1-33.
Paul knows that some of his readers had their doubts and skepticism about God and the choices He has made, or not made, and the rationale for them. They are critical choices. So, Paul’s going to give a significant portion of chapter 9 to address those questions that he knows people are asking.
We’re going to approach this chapter by asking those questions ourselves. The truth is that some of us have the exact same questions that Paul’s first readers had. If you’re one who is skeptical or has some questions about why God has acted toward people as He has, this is a great week to be here. We’re going to explore this together as Pastor Jeff continues our series Romans: Grace Changes Everything.
We’re in the midst of a study through the book of Romans called, Romans: Grace Changes Everything. And in this book, the Apostle Paul has been telling the Christians in the church in 1st century Rome, and us by extension, that we’re in a fight. It is a fight with sin and evil and Satan and the forces of darkness in our world. And there’s an implicit question being asked along the way and it is, “Who would win in a fight between those sides?” And we’ve seen that the human who is armed only in his own strength doesn’t fare very well. In fact, they get beaten pretty soundly.
But what if that human is armed? What if they have the weapons of God in their corner? What would happen then?
That’s what Paul is addressing as we come to our passage for today, which is Romans 8:31-39. Paul wants his readers to consider the fight if God is on their side. So, he begins the passage in that way. In verse 31 he invites the reader to consider, “If God is for us…”. (Romans 8:31). That’s what sets the stage for this whole passage, and then Paul draws some conclusions in the form of questions, which are really declarations.

Today we’re going to look at a passage where the Apostle Paul is talking about this four-letter-word: HOPE. We hope for many things. Hope, though, isn’t something we are always confident in. Hope can feel synonymous with a dream. It doesn’t always feel real or even attainable.
As Paul wrote this letter to believers in Rome, he specifically talked about a kind of eager anticipation and the confidence we can have in the hope of God’s promise about what is to come. We confidently and eagerly hope for God’s restoration for all things even as we live in the tension that our world is broken right now. The title of today’s message fits in with Paul’s writing on hope: Living With Confident Hope.

Today we’re going to talk about a leader we ought to follow in our lives. As we are led by this leader, we are called to copy all of His movements and actions. Paul wrote in our passage today about those who are led by the Spirit.
When we are led by the Spirit we become obedient to the Word of God and our lives begin to show more and more likeness to the life and ways of Jesus Christ. He is the leader we are to follow each and every day in all of His ways and actions and Word.

Today, we’re going to be talking about things being Made New. Companies and entrepreneurs are always working to make things new and make improvements on current designs. There’s a lot of time and money that is invested into making products new and sometimes those work out and sometimes they don’t. It’s never a sure thing. But today, we’re going to take a look at something else that has been made new and the good news is that it is an absolute sure thing. You can count on it 100%.
This sure thing is brought to our attention in Romans 8:1-11. This is where we’ve come in our studies through Romans. This is an amazing chapter. Many scholars and commentators believe this is the greatest chapter in all of the bible and it would be hard to argue with them. There is so much here, and we see it right from the outset.

When we’re under the influence of something, it’s going to have implications. It always does. Sometimes those implications are good and sometimes they’re not, but they are going to be there. Today we’re going to look at an area where we are Under the Influence. We don’t like to think of ourselves as being under the influence, because it means that influence has power or authority over us. But it’s important that we would open our eyes to recognize it for what it is and deal with it appropriately. That’s what we’re going to do today as we turn to the book of Romans, chapter 7.

If you ask Americans what they want most, you’ll get a variety of answers. Some say they want a strong economy, lower prices, a fix for political and other divisions, or a guarantee to never be seated next to the screaming kid on the plane. Another item that is high on the list of most people is personal freedom.
Today, we come to an interesting passage in the letter of Romans where the Apostle Paul, our author, addresses this topic of freedom. Please turn to Romans 6:15-23. Just like you and me, people in the 1st century valued their freedom too, but there was an interesting phenomenon going on where people were pursuing freedom, but they kept getting tripped up finding it. And ironically, it was often their attempts to find it that was standing in the way of them actually getting it.

When people join a club or organization, it indicates that they are united…there is something they share in common with one another. That is a central feature of the book of Romans as well. Paul is writing to a group of people who were a part of the church in Rome. Many of them had a Jewish background that united them. Others had a Gentile background that united them. But the unique feature for them all was that despite their independent backgrounds, there was something else that was uniting them, and that was a common faith in Jesus Christ. And throughout Romans, the author Paul is pointing out that what also unites them is being justified through the grace of Jesus Christ…a grace that changes everything.
In today's message we will see that Paul is going to take that one step further and show us that our unity isn’t just with other people whose lives have been changed by the grace of Jesus. There is a different sort of unity on his mind, and that has to do with the fact that the believer is also United with Christ.

Today, we turn the page to Romans 5. Please turn. This is an amazing chapter. It is rich and deep and offers encouragement for life as we live it day-to-day. And if you find yourself facing any hard times or difficult circumstances in your life, today is going to be helpful.

Today, we’re going to see some other “this or that” choices that have enormous implications. We’re going to be looking at This or That: The Essentials of Faith.
We are going to see Paul, in chapter 4, drive it home one more time as plainly as he can by considering “This or That”, the real thing and the imposter. He’s going to draw a dividing line between the two. And it is all centered around The Essentials of Faith. This is really helpful because it is so easy for us to feel the same pull and fall into the same traps that the early Christians in Rome faced. So, let’s approach this with an open heart to hear what the Spirit of God would say to us today as well. If we will, we can get some things settled for ourselves today that many believers carry around as anchors for years, keeping them from experiencing the fullness of life in Christ.
We all know what the little phrase “Over the top” means. It refers to something that is beyond extravagant. There are all sorts of things that are “over the top”, and today we’re going to see some more as we come to Romans 3:21-31. This is where we’ve come in our studies through the letter of Romans that we’re calling, Romans: Grace Changes Everything.
So far in our studies, Paul has offered us some deep theological truths and very practical principles for what that means for living our lives day-to-day. And it has been awesome to see what he’s been dripping into these passages. Well, today, the drip becomes a water cannon, we get more layers, both barrels, pick your metaphor. Today, he goes over the top.

In what are you willing to put your confidence?
That’s a question that comes up as we return to our studies through the book of Romans. Throughout this book, the Apostle Paul, the author is trying to move people forward in their understanding of righteousness and unrighteousness and gospel and grace. But his purpose isn’t to just increase people’s knowledge, he is trying to move people forward in their relationship with Jesus. But not everyone was getting it.
So, he writes to them pointing out some of the places where they have put their confidence that might not pay off in the end…as well as offers hope for what will.

We can safely say that the Babe Ruth trade was a bad one…at least for the Red Sox. But today we’re going to look at some other trades that have had even more significant ramifications. Now, one thing we’ll notice about the trades we have in mind today is that they aren’t the trade of a person, but the trade of beliefs and actions. And the telling, and alarming, feature about them is that we’re all involved in the trading.
Today, we’re thinking about Making the Trade. The place where we find the trades we’re talking about today is in a compelling and increasingly controversial passage in the bible. It is found in Romans 1:18-32.

What are you ashamed of? Psychologists tell us that we all have something. Some people are ashamed of their appearance, or their family, or the appearance of their family. Some people are ashamed of their finances. But one thing that most everyone says they have some shame over has to do with what they eat.
The truth is we all have things that leave us feeling ashamed. And sometimes those feelings might be appropriate. But sometimes we feel ashamed in areas where we shouldn’t. Today, we’re going to spend some time processing that and considering how we might get to a place where we can live, Unashamed.

We are in Exodus today… you may have heard of Moses, the guy who goes to Egypt and stands before Pharaoh and says, “Let my people go!” / Charlton Heston / Prince of Egypt
In the second chapter of Exodus we are introduced to Moses for the first time, as an adult. In the previous chapter, we learn that Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, was getting afraid of the Hebrews so he gave an order that all Hebrew baby boys were to be killed. So Moses, who is a Hebrew child is saved from death because his mom put him in a basket in the river, he later gets adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter, and Moses is raised in the palaces of Egypt. So he is raised as a prince of Egypt.
The book of Acts says that he was raised in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and powerful in speech and action. He is also, when we meet him for the first time as an adult, a man who is ready to make things right.
