I'm OBLIGED to 80-HOUR UNPAID, clinical WORK WEEKS as a vet STUDENT... 🚨 Yes, it sounds crazy to me too, and earlier this year, reports from Penn vet students working 100-hour weeks have brought to light a significant and often overlooked issue within veterinary education. As a current vet student, I find it alarming that the industry continues to overwork students to such extremes, under conditions that would be deemed unacceptable in most other professions. Especially as I get closer to my clinical year, I get more frightened than excited.

I do understand the necessity and reality of the veterinary profession, and with that I do feel like there are some things that are inevitable. Compassion fatigue is something that stays at large in our profession, and in a sense I think it's part of the culture of people who choose to be in our field. However, I don't think that the students, especially when burnout rates are high, should be forced to work extreme hours at the detriment of our well-being.

I'd really like to have conversations with people of all different generations and roles in the veterinary profession, so comment down below & let's talk.

In my class, there are 6 black students and 1 other black male. Yet, one day, I hope that I see more of myself in the profession I fell in love with. To build a more inclusive veterinary profession, it is essential to focus on recruiting and retaining diverse talent. This begins with outreach and education efforts that highlight veterinary medicine as a viable and rewarding career path for underrepresented groups. Partnerships with HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions can play a significant role in these efforts. Additionally, creating scholarships, internships, and mentorship programs specifically for underrepresented students can help bridge the gap. Once these students enter the field, ongoing support and professional development opportunities are crucial for their retention and success. By fostering a supportive environment, we can ensure that diverse talent not only enters but thrives in the veterinary profession.

I believe that achieving a more diverse and inclusive veterinary profession requires a unified vision and concerted effort from all stakeholders. We're still far from being a truly diverse field, but I hold onto the hope that with a continued commitment to equity and inclusion, we can create a future where everyone belongs.

My dog, Luke, was recently at the ER, facing a series of unexpected health issues, & the initial cost just to have him admitted was THOUSANDS of dollars up-front. I've been blessed through life, but this situation just shows the financial barriers many families face when their pets need care. As we push for innovation in veterinary medicine, we must also ensure that these advancements are affordable and accessible. So, I believe that elehealth services, like Shadi Ireifej's VetTriage, and flexible financial plans, that are offered to everyone, are essential to making this happen.

Imagine you're rushing into the vet clinic, your heart pounding as you hold your beloved pet in your arms. They're in pain, and you're overwhelmed with worry, especially because you know your wallet is nearly empty. "I can't afford much," you confess to the receptionist, feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders. But instead of cold indifference, you're met with warmth and understanding. "Let's focus on what's important—getting them the care they need. We have financial plans for everyone," the receptionist assures you. In that moment, relief floods through you, mingling with gratitude. Your pet, your family, will be okay, and it's all thanks to a practice that extends its care beyond the clinic, making sure no one is turned away.

The shift towards more accessible veterinary care is ushering in a new era, fundamentally reshaping how practices engage with their communities. By embracing inclusivity, veterinary services are becoming more than healthcare providers; they're evolving into community pillars that uphold the value of every pet's well-being. This transformation is fostering a deeper connection between vets and pet owners, built on trust and a shared commitment to care beyond financial barriers.

As we progress, these practices are being recognized not just for their medical services but as vital contributors to community health. Innovative payment solutions and outreach efforts are setting new benchmarks for what it means to deliver veterinary care. This holistic approach benefits not just the pets and their owners but enriches the very fabric of the veterinary profession.

How Employee Wellness & Success Leads To Increasing The Bottom Line: 👇🏾

We're in an era where the corporate world often seems fixated on the bottom line, Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic, is setting a sterling example of putting action behind words in fostering employee well-being. The company's commitment to ensuring no more than 10% of its staff experience stress is a revolutionary stride toward holistic wellness, showcasing an understanding that personal growth, success, and even business triumph hinge not just on numbers but on the well-being of every individual in the organization. This bold initiative not only highlights the importance of mental health in the workplace but also aligns with my belief in the power of holistic wellness as a cornerstone for personal and professional success.

➡ Thought Point: Consider the impact that corporate wellness initiatives, like those of Novo Nordisk, can have on the broader business landscape and societal health norms.

The Earth is DYING, but if we steer clear of measuring it we will NEVER be able to MANAGE it. It goes:

1️⃣ If you can not DEFINE it, then there's no way you can MEASURE it.

2️⃣ If you can not MEASURE it, then there's no way that you can MANAGE it.

So what's the difference with#sustainability?

As we navigate through the bustling streets of innovation and change, Uber is leading the charge toward a sustainable future, transforming every ride and meal into a step closer to our collective environmental goals. In their latest sustainability initiative, Uber is empowering customers to track their carbon footprint reduction by choosing greener ride options like Uber Green and Comfort Electric, and making eco-conscious decisions on Uber Eats. This groundbreaking move is not just about offering eco-friendly alternatives but about creating a culture of accountability and awareness, where each of us plays an active role in steering towards a greener future.

Their introduction of emission-tracking features and smart charging recommendations for electric vehicle drivers showcases a commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, one ride at a time. With these initiatives, Uber is not merely a service provider but a catalyst for change, urging us to consider the environmental impact of our daily choices. From opting for rides in electric vehicles to supporting restaurants that use sustainable packaging, every action counts. Uber’s journey in sustainability tracking is a testament to the power of technology and collective action in shaping a sustainable future.

They've DEFINED it, so they can MEASURE it, and now they are MANAGING it. Learn more and find out how to change your world in today's edition of Thru Jeremiah's Eyes: 👇🏾

I recently had the honor of facilitating a symposium on AI in vet med, where we explored the potential of AI to transform our field 🧠 Artificial intelligence is set to revolutionize veterinary care, offering incredible advancements in diagnostics and treatment. In my opinion, the insights gained were nothing short of groundbreaking, but they also highlighted the need for ethical and thoughtful implementation.

As we move forward with AI in veterinary medicine, it’s crucial to ensure these technologies enhance, not replace, the human touch that defines our profession. Balancing innovation with empathy will be key to providing the best care for our patients.

P.S. Thank you Parminder S. Basran Ph.D. FCCPM, FAAPM for inviting me to facilitate this alongside your team!

How much progress are we losing by ignoring bold ideas? Leadership, in its most impactful form, isn’t just about holding authority—it’s about having the courage to push boundaries, question the status quo, and ignite change. In veterinary medicine, the call for courageous leaders is clear. By supporting creativity, not just from industry veterans but also from the new generation of veterinarians and support staff, we’re planting seeds of progress that could benefit both patients and practitioners.

The most transformative ideas often emerge when people feel free to dream big without fearing rejection. It’s time for our field to foster a culture where creativity is celebrated, innovation is supported, and progress is a shared goal. Because when we support the dreams of those in our industry, we create a future where animals receive not just care but the best, most innovative care possible.

At the heart of every impactful business is a desire to create something bigger than itself—a legacy that future generations can look back on with respect. This focus on legacy means viewing business decisions through a lens of long-term impact, prioritizing not just what’s profitable but what’s sustainable and just. Purpose-driven businesses don’t merely focus on quarterly results; they set long-term goals that drive sustainable growth and genuine change. For these companies, success is defined not just by financial milestones but by the positive mark they leave on people and the planet. It’s about showing that profitability and purpose can, and should, coexist to build a business model that is both visionary and viable.

Back in August, I was part of a critical conservation operation for rhinos in Krugern National Park, South Africa 🦏 In this same world, the Sumatran rhino, with fewer than 80 individuals left, is one of the most endangered species on Earth. Conservationists are racing against time, using cutting-edge science like IVF and artificial insemination to save this ancient species from extinction 💔

But, despite the necessity for action, saving the Sumatran rhino isn’t just about science—it’s about strategy. I think that by treating conservation more, in a sense, like a business, with sustainable funding, compelling storytelling, and community involvement, we can create lasting change. At least, taking business concepts into practice more purposefully and consciously. Projects like these prove that ethical conservation can uplift both wildlife and local communities. The fight is urgent, but it’s also filled with hope. The Sumatran rhino’s story isn’t over yet, and with the right balance of innovation, economics, and compassion, we can ensure a future where this species thrives.

Any business people, veterinarians, or anyone with thoughts, I'd love to have a conversation in the comments about how we could make something like this happen!! 👇🏾

Rewilding - The process of restoring ecosystems to their natural, wild state by reintroducing species and allowing nature to take the lead in its recovery. Just for a second, imagine standing in a desert landscape that, over time, transforms into a thriving ecosystem full of life—native plants flourishing, wildlife like oryx and gazelles returning to their ancestral habitats, and rivers running through once-barren land. In Saudi Arabia, rewilding efforts are doing just that, with a blend of responsible tourism and conservation. Tourism in these areas is being used as a force for good, funding the restoration of biodiversity while offering people a glimpse of nature’s healing power. But for rewilding to succeed, it must be approached with caution, care, and communication between all parties involved.

Responsible tourism plays a critical role in supporting these efforts, but it must be done in a way that doesn’t disrupt the delicate balance of rewilding ecosystems. Ethical tourism practices—such as minimizing human impact and creating educational experiences—are key to ensuring that visitors can witness nature's return without harming the process. This balance requires transparency, careful planning, and a deep respect for the natural world. At its best, tourism can generate the funds needed to support long-term conservation while also raising awareness about the importance of restoring biodiversity in regions that need it most.

For rewilding to truly succeed, it requires a One Health approach, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Communication among conservationists, local communities, and government agencies is essential to ensure that the needs of both people and nature are met. It’s a slow process, requiring patience as ecosystems recover over time. But with open dialogue, sustainable practices, and a shared vision, rewilding offers a hopeful path forward—not just for the wildlife returning to these lands, but for the future of our planet as a whole.

How do you see rewilding impacting our world, and how do you think similar efforts could happen more readily here in the States?

🇿🇦 This past summer, I was in South Africa with veterinarians from around the world, but one of the harsh realities that we were all able to resonate with was the poor mental health of so many in our industry 💔 Yet, Merck Animal Health’s fourth Veterinary Wellbeing Study highlights improvements in addressing burnout and stress among veterinary teams. To me, this progress that they showed means hope, but still, there is tons of work to do. I don't see the profession where it needs to be, but I hope to make it better and push for change throughout my time here at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and beyond. I believe it takes everybody doing their part, but by prioritizing mental health resources, fostering open conversations, and supporting systemic change, we can build a profession where both animals and caregivers thrive. Let’s continue to push for a culture of care and progress ❣️

If you have any ideas for initiatives or programs that veterinary schools should implement, I'd love to hear some in the comments below! Feel free to message me as well :)

Vet schools need to start teaching us about AI, and how to use it to enhance our studies and practice, before we get left behind in the pursuit of innovation. From diagnostics to practice management, AI offers tools to enhance care and efficiency. Yet, apprehensions about ethics, regulation, and data security often slow its adoption. The solution? At least in my opinion, is integrating AI into veterinary school curriculums, addressing concerns with transparency, and focusing on ethical implementation. With purposeful action, we can ensure AI empowers, not replaces, veterinarians—unlocking possibilities that benefit animals, practitioners, and communities alike.

One thing I know for sure is that I would be nowhere without my support system and community, so first off, thank you! If you know me, you know I love having my hands in a lot of buckets and pursuing multiple things simultaneously—it's what fuels me. However, as I've entered more time-demanding realms, I've realized that my time has become very limited. My passion for my interests didn't just disappear with that realization. So, I began figuring out how to use my time most effectively, regulate my energy, and make tiny steps every day despite limited time.

View Details

While nothing replaces hands-on veterinary care, the pandemic has shown us that flexibility is possible. It's a way to introduce new realms of collaboration between all realms of our industry, whether research, industry, practice, or corporate, and so far it has been amazing to see the impact that it's already had. And it's crazy to think because we once thought that vet care had to be an entirely in-person job not too long ago.

However, it's not a one-size-fits-all type of solution. To me, it's one that can be adapted and molded to fit the unique challenges and opportunities of our world of pet care. And while there are challenges - like maintaining the essence of the team and building up the culture - these can be balanced, and even improved upon, with the proper balance by the benefits of a more flexible workplace.

So, as we move forward, it's clear that hybrid work is here to stay, and just like myself, many students currently in veterinary school are seeking more flexible contracts. Hopefully, our industry starts pushing the limits more & more, and I'd love to have a conversation in the comments below about how you think we could make this happen!

The young generation of workers, myself included, aren't running away from work; we're embracing it - on our own terms. We want purpose. We want impact. We want success. We want these things, but in a way that does not come at the expense of our health and personal lives either.

Throughout my time in veterinary medicine working at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, in business with the National Football League (NFL), and beyond, I've interacted with countless peers and we've all been saying the same things for years. We need to redefine what it means to work 'hard', and more importantly, what it actually means to work smart.

For those of us entering or establishing ourselves in the workforce, the concept of balance is vital. We’re driven, ambitious, and eager to grow in our careers, but we’ve also learned from the experiences of previous generations who faced burnout and exhaustion in the name of success. Balance isn’t about working less—it’s about working smarter, in a way that allows us to excel without sacrificing our health or personal fulfillment. This balanced approach also fosters better innovation and creativity, as we’re not constantly running on empty. When we have time to recharge, pursue personal passions, and spend time with loved ones, we come back to work more inspired and ready to contribute. In today’s world, professional growth is deeply connected to personal well-being, and companies that support this balance will be the ones that thrive.

Just as biodiversity is crucial for a thriving ecosystem in nature, is the same way diversity of backgrounds and thought is crucial for a thriving people in our world. With the restoration of the Danube Delta, the largest wetland in Europe, I feel like it reminds us that we have a responsibility to care for the world we live in. Every ecosystem, whether it’s a vast wetland, a dense forest, or a small pond, plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our planet. We cannot take these spaces for granted, nor can we ignore the connections between our actions and their impacts on the environment.

And as we work to restore biodiversity and protect natural habitats, we must also nurture the diversity of thought and cultures that make human society vibrant and adaptable. Just as the Danube Delta’s restoration depends on the return of each species, the future of our planet depends on our collective efforts to protect and cherish the natural world. By supporting rewilding efforts, advocating for conservation, and fostering a respect for diversity—both in nature and in society—we can build a more sustainable and equitable world for generations to come.

Honestly, the concept of 'Performative DEI' comes to mind when I think of the veterinary world I find myself in today. I see the conversations, and I hear about efforts, but in all actuality, I don't feel a real emphasis on DEI as much as I want to.

My journey through North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and now matriculating through Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine has been a very big culture shock & eye-opening experience. Especially on the fact that HBCUs are more than educational institutions—they’re transformative spaces where community and confidence intersect. My time at A&T prepared me for the challenges of veterinary school and fostered a passion for animal care. So, as we address the lack of diversity in veterinary medicine, HBCUs stand as a model for how intentionality and empowerment can create meaningful change.

This past year, I was in Schaumburg, Illinois, for the Student AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association)'s chapter summit, representing Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine as the president-elect of SAVMA. There, I was able to reconnect with people that I met back this past spring semester at SAVMA Symposium, as well as make new connections and build new relationships as well. But one of the biggest things that brings me the most joy and sense of community within the world of veterinary medicine is being able to see myself in others.

Journeying through veterinary medicine, there aren't many black vets. As a matter of fact, less than 2% of all vets in the United States are black. So when I started thinking about actually applying for this role in SAVMA at Cornell University, I didn't know how it was going to go, but thankfully I got the position, and through opportunities that I've gotten, I've been able to connect with other people that look like me, and we're journeying more into leadership. It's something that I see as very empowering for not only myself but also for the next generation of vets, as we're going to be the leaders that they actually look up to. We're gonna be the people that they see and give them that hope or confirmation that they're able to pursue their dream of being a veterinarian, that, yes, there are black veterinarians out there making changes in our industry.

And through my position specifically, I know for me, I want to be able to help with getting more black people within the world of veterinary medicine exposed to veterinary medicine from a younger age, as well as bring up leadership in terms of professors and admin for our respective schools, because we need to be able to see somebody like that in a position of power. We need to be able to see ourselves in the leadership. It's not only about solely having 'DEI' events or hosting this or that to teach about 'DEI.' It's also about having representation in rooms and showing people that you are capable of doing said thing because you see somebody that looks like you that you can identify with in that position that you aspire to be. And, yeah, I hope that we're able to do that. We're already starting.

As a black man in veterinary medicine, representing less than 1% of my profession, I feel the need for diversity every second I continue down my path. Now, in vet school at Cornell University's, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, I feel not only the stressors of school but also the impact of seeing nobody who looks like me as a peer or a leader in my space.

I feel like the journey towards a more diverse and inclusive veterinary profession requires a unified vision and concerted effort from all stakeholders. That's why I'm proud to see people like Niccole Bruno, DVM, the founder of blendVETÂŽ doing what she does for our community, alongside companies like Hill's Pet Nutrition that are fueling her efforts. Things like this are. what give me hope for our profession.

We're a very far way from being called even somewhat of a diverse field, but I still hold on to the hope that one day I will be in a world with continued commitment to equity and inclusion, we can ensure it is a future where everyone belongs.Today's edition of Thru Jeremiah's Eyes dives into more on the diversity in vet med & my experiences and vision as well.

If there's one thing vet school here at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine has taught me, it's that the content is tough, but the internal challenges external to schools are what will ultimately determine your success. And on that same token, the way we step into a situation and decide what our perspective is will create the exact environment that we perceive.

One of the things I recently learned about though is Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP). At its core, NLP is about diving into the connection between our thoughts (neuro), language (linguistic), and patterns of behavior (programming). It’s not about needing a specialist—it’s about training your mind to shift perspectives. I’ve found that by focusing on what I can gain from each situation, whether it’s a long study night or a tough clinical case, I stay grounded, balanced, and ready for more.
