Part three and the final instalment of the SoNA Reaction series is a conversation we all need to hear. In this episode, Mathabo Tlali is joined by Martin Gustafsson, an education economist and associate professor attached to the Research on Socio-Economic Policy (ReSEP), linked to the Department of Economics at Stellenbosch University. Martin gives us a glimpse into the economic perspective of #SONA2023. He helps us understand the education budget, how it is allocated and how each province plays a critical role in ensuring the allocated resources are used accordingly. In the series finale of 'Humans of JGF', we talk to Prof. Jonathan Jansen, Chairperson of the Board at JGF. Prof. Jansen is Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. He is currently President of the South African Academy of Science and the Knight-Hennessey Fellow at Stanford University (2020). He started his career as a Biology teacher in the Cape after receiving his science degree from the University of the Western Cape. He obtained an MS degree from Cornell University and a PhD from Stanford. Rudi Magi (they/them) is a person of many trades, with experiences ranging from teaching in both ‘mainstream’ and special education settings. An alum of the University of Pretoria, they hold a Bachelor of Education in FET (General); supported financially by the Thuto Thebe Educational Fund. Rudi then continued working in the higher education space including as a commercial administrator in the technology sector. Rudi taught for several years in Johannesburg and found their experience informed their Vision of Impact: to provide a successful future to learners by developing high-quality teachers. Rudi’s school-going years were tumultuous, and they attended eight schools across South Africa. This experience sparked a profound interest in the impact that teachers have on young minds, prompting them to pursue a qualification in education to amplify their own social impact through teaching. They joined JGF as a Teacher Coach in 2022, where they support our NQTs through their first two years in the classroom. Listen and enjoy!

Meet Amy Underwood and Siwaphiwe Sibeko, Senior Programme Officers at JGF. Amy loves working with people to maximize their potential. Her career has been centred around education and development. She completed a Master in Education at the University of Cape Town and during this time spent six months in Finland on an international programme studying their education model. She was a high school teacher for eight years, became a Programme Officer at Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, and then transitioned into her role at JGF.

Siwaphiwe “Siwa” Sibeko is an advocate for multilingualism, inclusivity, and expression in different spaces. Siwaphiwe is also a firm believer in education and social justice. Holding a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Social Anthropology, Environment and Geographical Sciences, Hons in Social Anthropology and currently finishing Master in MA Linguistics. Her previous work includes being a liaison officer, academic administrator, community developer, researcher, teaching assistant, student coach and mentor. Siwa is currently a Senior Programme Officer at JGF.

Meet Jade (Damonse) Glenn. Jade holds an Honours in Educational Psychology (UWC) and a Bachelor of Education degree in English and Life Orientation (UWC). From a young age, she realised her life’s calling is social change and leadership in education. In this episode of the series, we meet Cephas Mutami. Cephas has over 14 years of experience in research, data management, monitoring and evaluation across several sectors such as higher education, development practice, environment and property. In this segment of 'Humans of JGF' we get to know Samora Menze. Samora is an experienced teacher with a passion for mentoring and supporting young leaders. Samora graduated with a BSc in Human Life Sciences and a PGCE from the University of Stellenbosch. He completed his teaching practice at Paul Roos Gymnasium where his heart for mentoring boys was ignited. He then went to teach at Kayamandi High School in the township of Stellenbosch and later became a teacher at Westerford High School. He later joined Calling Academy in Stellenbosch. Samora joined JGF as Programme Officer.

In this episode, we are introduced to Angel Ancha Lindelwa Bulunga (Ancha) and Mzwandile Msimanga (Mzwa). Ancha was born and raised in the Kingdom of Eswatini. She is a Rhodes University alumna, an Allan Gray Fellow and Mandela Rhodes Scholar (2017). She is passionate about youth development, specifically personal and leadership development. Mzwa is an entrepreneurial and innovative capacity-building specialist with extensive experience at the forefront of holistic youth development, with a passion for improving access to quality learning opportunities for all. His experience within the education sector has led him to serve on the National Reading Coalition Reference Group and in 2021 he was a coordinating team member of the Reading Champions project for the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) with the Department of Basic Education, Nalibali, FunDza and the National Education Collaboration Trust. Thuli Nkosi is a digital marketing professional who joined JGF in 2021 as a Digital Marketing Specialist. She obtained a certification in digital marketing from Digify Africa in 2014 and a BA in Communication Science qualification from Unisa in 2019. Her journey to working in education began in 2015 when she worked at African Leadership Academy (ALA) as a Marketing Assistant. She used her time at ALA to develop various online communication frameworks to bolster ALA’s marketing and communication. Her passion lies in making brands accessible and personable online. She joins Mathabo on the podcast today to tell us more about her experience as a learner at school and the many phases she went through before arriving at JGF. Vuyiswa Ncontsa, former CEO of BRIDGE, now at the African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA) joined us at our business breakfast event held on 20 October 2022. She delivered an address about the importance of collaborations and partnerships and how they have benefited some of the world's leading education systems. A key takeaway from here address was, "If one looks at the leading education systems globally, they have four common elements that are largely rooted in collaboration. Firstly, they put results front and centre of what they do - performance is key. They also set standards and track progress. Secondly, innovation is imperative - having creative approaches to achieving results. Thirdly, inclusion - those education systems reach the most disadvantaged and marginalised. Lastly, finance - they fund education adequately. They mobilise for more resources in education."

In this episode, we are joined by Educational Strategist, Nangamso ka NomaHlubi. The work she does involves helping to develop and improve learning solutions within a school system in South Africa, primarily in Quintile 1+2 schools. Quintile 1 is the group of schools in each province catering for the poorest 20% of learners. Quintile 2 schools cater for the next poorest 20% of schools, and so on. Her work involves a range of different tasks such as evaluating teachers, planning new learning strategies that schools can use to help learners and addressing any unique needs or factors like school governance. As a child of a retired teacher, she is incredibly passionate about the work she does and believes that a school's success depends on the community that the school is in. Community, teachers, school leadership - everyone plays a key role in maintaining the management of schools and the success thereof.

In commemoration of Menstrual Hygiene Day on 28 May, we are honoured to have been in conversation with the Minister of Menstruation, Candice Chirwa. Candice is the Founder & Director of QRATE, an organisation focused on curating critical thinking in young people on social issues through workshops & content. She is an activist and author of the book 'FLOW: The Book About Menstruation'.
