The Spirituality of Surfing
On today's show:
I am so excited about today’s podcast. As an observer of life, I am passionate about the journey of creating the life you envision. No matter where you’ve started from or where you are today or the mistakes you feel you have made, I believe it's more than possible to live the life you want. In fact, I believe you can deliberately create it. And this podcast is dedicated to sharing information and having conversations with people who can offer new perspectives and provoke thought to create change in your own life. Today we are going to talk about the Spirituality of surfing.
Our guest navigator is Shuang-Min Chang. Shuang-Min has lived in some of the biggest cities in the world while achieving success in the fashion luxury industry. She's a life coach, writer, and avid surfer in a seaside village. She spends her time supporting driven women who have had career success and who put their work before everything. She guides them to walk on a new path and create success on their own terms by claiming their innate freedom & femininity, how to show up with love, and dare to live their deepest and boldest dreams.
Topics discussed:
- Shuang-Min Shares her surfing experience surfing and connects to her spiritual growth.
Memorable Quotes:
- “I realized the lesson surfing taught me, the key is not to get rid of fear, the key is to be with fear and still do what needs to be done.I don't need to get rid of it. I don't need to let it stop. My heart is pumping faster, that's all” - Shuang-Min
- “It's a part of the process. It's letting you know that you're growing. It is a good problem. It's not a bad problem. We're making it bad by sulking over it and emoting when it's really a part of the process .” - Sherylle
- “, I believe surfing is the only way to fulfill the miracle of walking on water. And so, what I was thinking is that, okay, this is in a way a miracle as a human, I can prefer if each wave is my own wave, because everyone has their own styles and each wave is different. So, basically each maneuver is different every single time. So if I can perform my own miracle on the water, why can't I perform miracles in my life?.” - Shuang-Min
- “When you start talking about letting go and surrendering, that is huge. Because we do want to control everything. We feel like if we control it, we can trust the outcome, but trust and control are not the same thing and if you want to get anywhere in life, we have to let some things go. We have to let go of the outcome.” - Sherylle

Intro:
Welcome to “You Thinking What I’m Thinking?”
Today we are going to talk about the power of reinventing oneself.
- Approaching inhibitions
- Getting out of the park
- Managing expectations
- Embracing life as a journey
- Accessing the universe
- Nurturing energy into success
- What should our Audience know
Memorable Quotes:
- “: I always say we upgrade our computer app. We either buy new computers and then we have all the gadgets. We all upgrade that. But the most important thing in our lives is ourselves, we have to upgrade ourselves” - Shuang-Min
- “-We may have an idea of what we want or an idea of the direction, but sometimes we are fearful cause we're trying to figure out the entire way, everything that we need to see and every detail. But the reality of it is the way that you get there is when you move from park into drive and have your GPS system, a GPS system doesn't say anything until you move, when you start to drive, then it says, go left, go right. .” - Sherylle
- “It depends, some people are more willing to really shed the layers of old self and there are some people that are afraid of letting go. I mean, we all have to let go of something to receive something new. That's just the law of the universe.” - Shuang-Min
- “It does not happen in a day, the thought may happen and you get it and you have an understanding, but it takes time for things to occur and that's the reason why it is a journey and the mindset and the expectations, the way that you've described it is so critical as you're on that journey, to be able to stay on that journey, to get to where you want to go.” - Sherylle

Today we’re discussing the mentality you need to have to plan your future.
Our guest navigator is Jeevan Matharu, an author, entrepreneur, intellectual, qualified transformational life coach, skilled with psychology and counseling. His published book is on personal development, Become a Person of Value you can grab on Amazon and Audible.
Jeevan’s upcoming book is about the deep questions one needs to ask themselves. Which I am excited about because I believe asking yourself questions is a key to piece to discovering who you are and what you want. We ask questions to either get information or to provoke thought. I looking forward to his finished product that will help walk people through that process.
At his practice, Vanquish Transformational Coaching, Jeevan looks to solve one’s life's problems together, helping you to design and achieve your goals. Jeevan focuses on Mentality and Goals.
Topics discussed:
- Mentality
- Being optimistic
- Having a sense of determinism
- Manifesting by imagination
- Planning your Goals
- Self-sabotaging
- Getting out of Survival mode
Memorable Quotes:
- “The fact that you’ve thought of something gives it the power to be built. So you know everything needs to be created in mind before it appears in reality. If we look at the house that we live in, it was designed by an architect first, it was then sent to the builders, they built the house, then it was decorated, and you were living in the house. It was manifested after it was created in the mind. I think with mindset, that’s the same thing really: you have to have a positive mindset before you actually have a positive life.” - Jeevan
- “To let the story play out. An obstacle happens or Something, Something Happens; like you said the car breaks down. You can get upset. Some people may decide to just leave the car just forget about it. Right? It’s like “okay well” and it ends the story ends at that point on the negative. Versus, as you said, if you go a little bit further and you pursue it, you know you might find it has a story arc continues it ends on a positive. But we stop at the negative because we hate the pain of it right. We want to avoid it all. I think sometimes when we go a little bit further in the story you might end up landing on the positive if you don’t stop on the negative part of it.” - Sherylle
- “Anything you can think of that's happened to you bad today or tomorrow or next week think “ what's the positive thing to come from this?”. Failure is First Attempts In Learning. And it's moving forward from there to reach success. ” -Jeevan
- “I am a firm believer that if you have an idea, that it’s yours to have. No matter what anybody else says. Nobody else has to see. If you see it, it’s yours. You own it. You can’t listen to the naysayers. Your self-talk is everything.” - Sherylle

Relationships as we Level Up!
In this Episode:
When you start to see your full potential, your life begins to shift in favor of your goals. We like to call this experience “Leveling Up”. During this shift you often see differences in your thought process, behavior, and even how you carry yourself. Some of these changes can be uncomfortable has you step into something new. We created the “Leveling Up series to help people navigate this change in their daily lives. Today, we are talking about Relationships as we Level Up. Our guest navigator is Rachel Elder. Rachel Elder is a Couples Therapist and Relationship coach helping career-driven women create a passionate relationship with their partners.
Topics discussed:
- How Important are relationships as you are leveling up
- Communication is always the key
- How do you start the conversation?
- How do you deal with the possible strain of the relationship?
- How Important are relationships as you are leveling up?
- What kind of people should you have in your circle?
- Is there a life cycle to relationships?
Memorable Quotes:
- “I used to tell my children as we're growing up, that first of all, your bilingual, most people think that they only speak their native language, but we are bilingual with our body language being our first language because I can tell you for sure, for me, if my mouth is not saying it, my eyes usually are. So I love that you said that because it's so true and we really need to take that into consideration as we are communicating with people” - Sherylle
- “If you haven't had a conversation about it, of course they're not understanding and maybe they're reacting more. It doesn't feel like they're as supportive or understanding of what's going on because they haven't been looped in. So I think that reflection is really key and then what's the conversation that needs to happen. and then stepping into that conversation with whoever it might be, whether it's your partner, a friendship, a colleague, inviting them into the conversation and letting them know, I'm leveling up in my life, there's changes that are happening and I want to loop you in. ” -Rachel
- “I had to learn to say, when they came into the room like that, "Hey, listen, I am in the middle of something right now, I'm not focusing on what you're saying, and it's not fair to you and it's not fair to me because I don't want to drop the ball. I care about what you're saying. Can you give me until this time?" Whether it's 15 minutes or "I'll be done by three o'clock and then I can give you my undivided attention.” - Sherylle

I am so excited to have my dear friend Tisha Cobb, who is back with us. You may have heard her in our other podcasts talking about our egos. She's back today to help me talk through and process a whole other idea that I've had in my head. Just to give you a little background, she's an entrepreneur, a veteran, a health and mindset coach, who's passionate about teaching both professional women and veteran women to put down their capes, and focus on their holistic self-care. I am so glad you're back Tisha, thank you so much for your time. I'm ready to dive in.
Topics discussed:
- Not a crisis but a shift in mindset
- Trust vs. control
- Different ways we approach adversity
- How do we shift our thinking?
- The power of recreation: A new avatar
- Many are called, but few are chosen
- Labels, hats, and the shifts
Memorable Quotes:
- “just like that thing that you are comfortable about, just like that was something that was going on, this is actually something that is a possibility too. And we talked about that before in a previous one. It's kind of universal, where it goes on with everything. It really does help you to realize that, oh man, I'm only in control of this because I got used to it, I was not in control of this when I first started.” - Tisha
- “ I can rebuild who I am, who I want to be. Take all of the experiences that I've had in the past and how can I make it even better as I move into whatever, and I get to choose where I go next, based upon that, and I can choose the new threads of what that looks like. I can even make sure I have all of the resources as I move all of the things, and then you step into that. I love the concept of knowledge applied because I think we will take in a lot of information, but sometimes we don't apply that information, we just kind of sit on it” - Sherylle
- “That’s where that shift came for me, and that’s what I suggest to you and anyone listening. It’s all about the mindset shift, it's all about how you choose to view things. When you see it as not, I lost this or I have to learn this again, I have to do this, but I get to, I get to recreate myself. Oh shucks, that’s exciting… Who do I want to be? ” - Tisha

Do You Have to Have an Ego to Be Successful?
In this Episode:
It comes from a thought that I had a couple of years ago; when I was thinking about what it takes for a person to be successful. I was watching my girl Bey (Beyonce), and was so inspired and motivated by her energy and her ability to do what she does. I just started thinking like: what does it take for a person to really step into their zone and destiny? I thought about people who are willing to write that book or put that TV show on like a Shonda Rhimes. There has to be something inside of you; there has to be that confidence to actually make you press go and to do it. While thinking about that I thought about another topic that I'm looking forward to speaking about “Identity crisis as you level up”. When I decided to have this podcast, I was like “there's only one person I could talk to about this”, and that is my girl Tisha cobs, a dear friend, an entrepreneur, a veteran, as well as a health and mindset coach. She's passionate about teaching both professional women and veteran women how to put down their capes and focus on their holistic self-care.
Topics discussed:
- How people view ego
- What is ego?
- The challenge: how do we align them?
- How do you get past it?
- Self-esteem, What are you willing to accept?
- What do our listeners need to know?
- Making decisions based on emotions
- Using thoughts to creating manifestations
Memorable Quotes:
- “How much do you like yourself? How much do you love yourself? How much do you value yourself? Because whatever that amount is, that is going to be in direct correlation between you, and how positive you are, how you get, things done; and so literally, you want to make sure that all three parts, you know, all three parts are in alignment, you know, some people are stronger in some points than in other parts, but when you really start to get an understanding of true ego, it really has to do with perfectly balancing, or as good as possible, nothing's perfect. All three of those parts.” - Tisha
- “ I love that answer, there's so much I can unpack there. I just want to start with the whole notion first and foremost of asking yourself a question because most people don't think that. “ it sounds kind of crazy, though. Am I talking to myself” but we all talk to ourselves all the time! More importantly, we're the ones we really listen to. - Sherylle
- “when you go around with your head down, and just looking down at your feet all the time, and you're literally saying, what was me, then that is your standard that you have allowed your mind to accept? That's all it is. And at some point, the difference where you change, you know, earlier you were talking about Bay and how, you know, she is just amazing, you know, her stage presences and she's like, “Listen, I'm going to increase my standards. For myself, I'm going to be a better person”, you know, in my opinion, she's the pinnacle of it. I just love her.” - Tisha
- “I think I learned this from my dad, he used to say, you know, emotions, follow your choices, things that have happened to you in the past. Usually, it's your emotion as a response, whether it's a good or a bad one, you know, it's a response to what has happened in the past. And so; that's why I always say the beautiful thing about choices, is that you can actually make new choices.” - Sherylle

We often hear branding as one of those buzzwords that everyone either must have or should consider. As I have stepped into this new adventure, it's certainly something that I’ve thought about. I’m so excited to have our next guest help take out the guesswork. She’s here to discuss the concept of intuitive branding. Kath is an intuitive branding designer who focuses on building brands on your terms. In her own words, “Branding that is completely aligned with what you personally want for your business/ brand.” We have worked together over the last few months, and I had to have her come to share her knowledge with you.
Topics discussed:
- What is a brand?
- How do you start the process?
- Image vs. Brand
- Imposter syndrome
- Shiny syndrome
- Rebranding through the phases of life
- Need to knows
Memorable Quotes:
- “By showing up as yourself and including that in your brand; It’s going to be more authentic. Then the people that are drawn to your personality type and the way that you are, are going to be drawn to your brand. Rather than the old way of branding where you were just pushing a product or service, and there wasn’t too much emotion behind it.” -Kath.
- “I totally agree with that; I love that. It is an evolution, we are constantly evolving, and if we can accept that evolving, and if we can accept that of one another, then we will be able to really understand where people are and learn and grow from even watching and observing their journey.” - Sherylle.
- “Greatness only comes when you push yourself out of your comfort zone, but also you will know when you are ready and willing and able to do something. Versus when something feels so completely removed from what you are being asked to do, that it is too much for you.” -Kath
- “Give yourself space to change because sometimes you'll get there. It's like you said, you realized that this is not for you; it's okay to change your mind. What did you learn from that? How did you grow from that? And now, what is it that I really want? What does that look like?” -Sherylle

Sherylle Bates converses with her happy hour partner Kishau and restaurant manager, Tony, about the benefits of happy hour and why everyone should do it. HH is a great way to put life on pause and purposely carve out time to unwind, vent, or celebrate. It's a reward for the hours spent working. My motto is “work hard, play harder.” Sit down with your favorite drink and good friends. You can meet at your favorite bar or restaurant, chill on the deck at a friend’s house, or even do it virtually. Regardless, Happy Hour = Whatever puts your mind at rest and makes you happy for at least an hour.
Topics discussed:
- Benefits of Happy Hour
- What to drink
- Finding the Perfect Bar or Restaurant = Finding the Perfect People
- The restaurant Bis
- Virtual Happy hour or HH during Covid Times
Memorable Quotes:
- “To decompress, to get a release, to unbutton the top button of the shirt and loosen the tie a little bit if you will. Have a drink and have a beer, or at the moment, just to hell with. Like hell with the moment. When you're having a hard day and “it's like hell with it, I need a drink.” - Tony
- “ Sometimes you just have to let it out, pop the air out. That's what I mean by therapy. You're not carrying it. You're not holding onto it the next day. Giving each other advice on things and it can run a gamut from family to work to “that co-worker.” It's a form of therapy. It really, really is.” - Sherylle.
- “Tony made a point about the types of conversations that people have. I'm the kind of introvert that I don't see the purpose of leaving my house if I'm going to have small talk with people. So that's why we have great conversation. I mean, I can talk to people at home, and I have people all around me all the time. And this is not a work thing, it's more from a social interaction standpoint, happy hours work best for me. ” - Kishau
- “And that's what happy hour means to me, the ability to just take a step away from life and just enjoy it. Take a moment in that present time, just to enjoy it, walk away from whatever else you're doing, and also have good drinks, meet good people and enjoy yourself. ” - Sherylle

The primary focus is on creating spaces of inclusion, that respect and honor all people.
Topics discussed:
- Institutional vs interpersonal organizations and development.
- What is true diversity?
- Morals behind diversity
- Significance of Representation
- Should businesses prioritize the people or the product?
- Can you unteach hate?
Memorable Quotes:
- “You also have all of the microaggressions, biases, the way people react and the anti-blackness people experience at work. Those things are occurring. So there is a high level of skepticism, with organizations, that nobody is going to do anything. - Sherylle
- “Are you an upstander or a bystander? Are you one of those leaders who “ I hear and see things that happen in the organization and I'm afraid to do anything about it”. That's not what a leader would do.” - Ciara
- “A lot of companies have been performative in nature when it comes to diversity. A long time ago folks were not trying to do anything for pride month and all of a sudden you see certain companies making money off of people's identities. That's performative. ” - Ciara
- “I think some people are intentional with their hate and some people are not. These are the same people who show up at work. The same people who show up at church. These are the same people who may be in front of you at the grocery store.” - Sherylle
