Nigeria is in the midst of massive protests (known as #ENDSARS) revived in early October following repeated public outcry for the government to abolish a controversial police unit called the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) dating back to 2017. It is believed that the unit has been responsible for kidnappings, harassment, extortion and extrajudicial killings.
On the night of 20 October 2020 the protest came to a climax where the Nigerian Armed Forces opened fire on peaceful protesters at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos State. The number casualties is still unconfirmed with Amnesty International confirming 12 protesters were killed in what the organisation described as "extrajudicial executions".
In this episode (Part 2 of the 'Can Bitcoin Fix Nigeria' series), I welcome back Rebecca Asseh a Nigeria based crypto expert and activist who has been on the frontline of the protest to understand what factors drove the protest, the people behind the demonstration and how Bitcoin is funding the fight against police brutality.

The prime objective of this group is to educate the Black community online on all things Blockchain and cryptocurrency, as well as challenge the status quo and lack of diversity in the rapidly growing blockchain industry.
Black People & Cryptocurrency has around 10,000 members from around the world sharing information on a myriad of subjects such as investing, mining, and debating blockchain-related topics.

We talk about Nigeria's political and economic situation post COVID19, the devaluation of the Naira and the reality of Bitcoin adoption in the country.
**PLEASE NOTE: since the recording of this podcast there has been some regulatory changes to the cryptocurrency space in Nigeria, most notably the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recently declaring Bitcoin is not legal tender and banks cannot carry out crypto-based activities. This is likely to have an adverse effect and may mean the forced closure Naira crypto currency accounts. We will look at the impact of this ruling on the industry in a follow-up podcast with Rebecca.
