Have you ever noticed that when you look in the mirror that your tongue is different from your friend's tongue? That’s because it is! Not only is it different, like your fingerprints…if you really look at it through the lens of a traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner you can learn so much about what's happening inside your body at the various phases of your life.
Tongue Diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine has been used for centuries as a diagnostic tool to assess the condition of the entire body. Before the advent of modern technology like MRIs, Ultrasounds and Blood work, TCM practitioners relied on their observation skills and knowledge of TCM principles to interpret the information provided by the tongue.
In this episode; Mary Wong, TCM expert at ALIVE HOLISTIC HEALTH CLINIC explains how tongue diagnosis demonstrates the intricate understanding of the various organs of the body in TCM where the tongue serves as a diagnostic map. While modern technology, like MRIs, provides detailed anatomical information, tongue diagnosis continues to be valuable as a non-invasive, cost effective, and readily accessible diagnostic tool in TCM practice. Especially in cases where modern technology doesn’t have an explanation for your symptoms, she explains how you can use the tongue diagnosis to uncoverimbalances and take proactive steps to heal yourself by restoring harmony within the body.

Have you been told by your family doctor that you are in perfect health, yet you feel tired, heavy, bloated, and sick? The information presented highlights the importance of taking care of our liver's detoxification abilities, especially during spring. A guided spring detox from a naturopathic doctor and acupuncturist can help reduce the toxic load hidden in our environment and diet, which can contribute to the emerging silent epidemic of NAFLD (“Non alcoholic fatty liver disease”). NAFLD congests and slows down our livers, making us gain weight, feel bloated, tired, and unwell despite tests showing otherwise.
Learning about the foods to take a break from and the top three liver support supplements can improve the liver's ability to detoxify, leading to better energy levels, weight loss, and improved chances of conceiving.

And you know what? We're not talking about it in a way that's going to make you feel like a weakling or a slug. No, we're gonna help you become one of those people who can juggle multiple things in the air without breaking a sweat or feeling overwhelmed.
But first, let's talk about the science behind this.
See, researchers have found that there are some foods that help boost your energy levels and keep you going when you need it most. So we've put together SIX key dietary recommendations:
1) consider Mediterranean diet
2) limit excess fructose consumption by avoiding processed foods and beverages with added fructose
3) include PUFAs (Polyunsaturated fatty acid) and MUFAs (monounsaturated fatty acids) instead of SFAs (saturated fatty acids) in your diet
4) replace processed food, fast food, commercial bakery goods, and sweets with unprocessed foods high in fiber, including whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds; and
5) Eat Prebiotic Resistant Starches that ferments in the intestines and feeds “good” gut bacteria
6) avoid excess alcohol consumption and improve diet to reduce chances of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

When you're tired and don't feel like you have energy, it makes it hard to think about making a healthy meal. It's way easier to grab snacks like a donut, muffin, or chips. That's a conundrum because you're not nourishing your body and providing the fuel it needs to get you through the day. Instead, you're congesting your organs. This can make you feel lazy, tired, bloated, constipated, and even anxious, irritable, or stressed. We call it “liver qi stagnation,” which means the natural flow of energy is stuck, which impacts our mental and physical health. The medical literature now shows this to be true. When someone has liver disease they are more likely to feel depressed and anxious. So stay tuned for some easy practical sleep, nutritional and health tips to help you get unstuck…

Having a hard time getting pregnant and doing IVF? I don’t know about you but when it cost upwards to $20,000 for an IVF cycle, we both did everything possible to increase our chances of success when we did IVF cycles.
When it comes to acupuncture, the literature for IVF is mixed which is confusing because the data mostly looks at acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer. In the real world it is not the only intervention we do. The larger datasets of people adding more sessions of acupuncture, lifestyle and dietary modifications, other modalities, Chinese herbs when appropriate were associated with 2 fold increases in the odds of live birth and 75 % reduction of biochemical pregnancy.
Not only that, but when research finds that ¾ of women and ⅔ of men are clinically anxious going through IVF, we need help to relax and persevere this grueling journey. Dr. Lee Hullender-Rubin released a study in 2022 showing that acupuncture provided significant benefit for IVF related anxiety. From this, we can extrapolate that acupuncture can help anxiety for folks trying to conceive at home, with timed intercourse or with IUI’s as well. It helps provide you strength and the endurance to continue forward if for some reason the cycle is not successful.
We want to help you achieve your goal of having a healthy baby by staying healthy physically and emotionally. This includes “your sleep, digestion, and ability to get through the day without choking someone.” Acupuncture is not only for used for before and after an IVF Embryo transfer. Our patients use it as support throughout their whole journey no matter where they're at. So even when they're having a break from IVF treatment, they take this time to rebuild until they are ready to re engage, feel more confident and healthy.
Acupuncture or TEAS (Transcutaneous Electroacupoint Stimulation) helps the body release endorphins which mitigates stress, helps you to relax, continue on your journey, and also increases blood flow to the ovaries and uterus making them more "juicy" with oxygen and nutrients for a more receptive environment for baby making.Q

Trying to have a baby but feeling like you’re running out of time, have diminished ovarian reserve (DOR), PCOS, recurrent pregnancy loss, or poor sperm quality?
Check out the findings of these studies using Transcutaneous Electro-acupoint Stimulation (TEAS) used to boost fertility:
In IVF when TEAS was used, there were:
42% more clinical pregnancies
9% more quality embryos
45% fewer chemical pregnancies
42% more live births
In cases of PCOS:
TEAS reduced androgens (male hormones), improved sensitivity to insulin and sugar metabolism and reduced elevated AMH.
In cases of Male Factor:
TEAS increases sperm count and motility.
In Recurrent Implantation Failure:
TEAS improved uterine lining by making it more juicy, thick, trilaminar, and receptive for implantation.
Whether you are needle phobic, live in a rural area, or find it hard to commit to regular acupuncture treatments, TEAS machine is a viable, safe, and easy to use option. It’s essentially like getting needle-free acupuncture that uses electrical stimulation on sticky pads that get applied to acupuncture points on the skin.
But listen up, knowing what kind of machine to buy, where to put the electrodes, how to set up the machine, how frequently to use it and for how long is important. You will need guidance in the set-up and we can help!
What can PMS, trying to conceive, perimenopause or postmenopause have in common? Vaginal dryness.
Yes, it's true. It can happen to anyone but no one talks about it. A dry fanny can be annoying, uncomfortable, and painful which may even impede the desire for the bedroom tango. And if the strategy is to avoid sex, over time there's a possibility that, "if you don't use it, you lose it!"... Which potentiates another problem - vaginal muscle atrophy.
Using water based and silicone lubricants is one feasible strategy but not the only solution.
So we're going to talk about libido squishers and what you can do to improve dryness:
Connection and intimacy to stimulate natural lubrication in which things like hand holding or spending time in clothes on the couch can help
Estrogen supplementation
Chinese herbal medicine to nourish the Yin body fluid to help moisten and replenish our cells' fluids.
Acupuncture to help the brain and body connection, regulate hormones and increase blood flow to the "lady parts"
Ashwaganda, rhodiola, to name a few herbal supplements
Food balanced macronutrients - protein, cholesterol in good fats like walnuts, sesame seeds, zinc

Why is it that no one talks about painful sex when up to 28% or a quarter of the female population worldwide experience this sometime in their lives?
Lee Hullender Rubin, clinician and researcher specializing in reproductive medicine, shines the light on this global vulva problem in order to stop the silent struggle, provide tangible solutions, and increase the sexual confidence that women deserve.
She goes through some of the causes of pain including endometriosis, pelvic myalgia ( muscle tightness), hormonal changes, and physical or anatomical problems.
More importantly, instead of avoiding or enduring chronic pain upon penetrative sex, Dr. Lee really encourages women to have a village of care and a good propylene glycol and paraben free lube.
Drawing from experience and research, acupuncture is one effective option to decrease pain from contact, pressure or rubbing where involuntary vaginal muscles tighten. … rest assure that NO needles are inserted into the nether regions of the female body.
The point is, if you are struggling with painful sex, you are not alone, there are options and we are here to help.

When it comes to having a baby, women dream of IVF and taking hormones…. NEVER. Dr. Tanya and Mary never expected to do IVF but they did and are grateful to have their kids. Being experts in the field of natural medicine, fertility and hormones, they are eager to look for ways to make your IVF process easier.
We turned to Dr Ari Baratz, fertility doctor at Create Fertility Centre in Toronto, to address the following questions to help you make an informed choice around natural versus medicated Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) cycles:
Is freezing embryos safe?
How do we make the IVF process a little more natural?
When is natural FET appropriate?
When is a medicated and programmed FET better than a natural FET?
One argument for a natural cycle is that there is an orchestra of hormones that we cannot identically mimic when we do a medicated cycle. Obstetrical outcomes (less IGUR, preterm births and high blood pressure in moms) may be better in a pregnancy where the woman ovulates on her own to support the corpus luteum (which secretes progesterone) in the first trimester.
Science hasn't proven whether “natural is better than programmed” cycles for FET. There is research on the way so we will interview Dr. Baratz again to review the results of the trial to give you the latest scoop.
Until then, listen or watch (use “ listen” for podcast and rewrite to “watch” for Youtube and use both for website please) this episode.

Finding the right match for marriage isn’t something we are taught which is a conundrum when divorce rates are as high as fifty percent. Is it wrong if we are obsessed with the need to have “chemistry” (especially because the film industry has been romanticizing love for over a century)?
Alison Armstrong, author and relationship coach explains that we are all too often driven by the “survival of the species” instinct where we look for desired genetic traits to make children rather than listen to our hearts as we search for a true partner.
Here are a few important questions Alison asks in order for you to build chemistry, find long term happiness and fulfillment in a healthy partnership:
Does your partner amplify you?
Do they make you the best version of you?
Do they “see you?”
Do they listen to you?
Do you have resonance with them?
Are you attracted to the “strong bad boy” type?
If you are in a relationship and feel mismatched or lost, Alison Armstrong will help you better understand each other to improve intimacy and connection.

Fifty percent of repeated miscarriages are unexplained. The good news though is that seventy percent of women go on to have a healthy baby after two miscarriages! There is a theory that when there are recurrent pregnancy losses (RPL) the immune system may be playing a role. The uterus has its own immune system which it uses to recognize the embryo, implant and help it create a placenta. Some women may have an issue with this process even if the immune system in their blood shows normal.
Unfortunately, to date, there are only a few proven effective treatments to treat the immune system when it is impacting the ability to stay pregnant. We turn to Dr. Genevieve Genest, reproductive immunologist to discuss what women can do to increase their chances of taking home a baby in the case of unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss and multiple failed IVF Embryo Transfers. We cover the effectiveness of progesterone, blood thinners; (baby aspirin, low molecular weight heparin), steroids such as prednisone, intralipids and IV-IG, Hydroxychloroquine. She also covers some of the treatments which have NOT been shown to be effective but are still being used.
Dr. Genevieve Genest is not only the leading immunologist and head of Canada’s first university based reproductive Immunology clinic but also a person who has experienced losses of her own. She cuts out a lot of the confusion around many of the treatments for recurrent pregnancy loss and shares openly about how many of the treatments and procedures touted to prevent recurrent pregnancy loss are based on limited scientific evidence. She even shares the importance of diet, lifestyle factors, supplements, and acupuncture, all of which she used during her personal journey.

Want to lose weight but struggling? It's not just about food and exercise! Learn about the role of hormonal imbalances, nutrition deficiencies, and sleep on weight loss from Dr. Tanya and Mary. Did you know an underactive thyroid and insulin resistance can cause weight gain? Prioritize a healthy hormone balance, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet for a holistic approach to weight loss.
Losing weight is more than food in and exercise out. Dr. Tanya and Mary explore the various reasons why some people struggle to lose weight despite their best efforts. They discuss the role of hormonal imbalances, nutrition deficiencies, and sleep in weight loss.
For example, an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can cause weight gain.
Insulin resistance, which can be caused by a variety of factors including genetics, diet, and lifestyle, can also contribute to weight gain by making it more difficult for the body to use glucose for energy.
Inadequate sleep can lead to weight loss resistance by disrupting the balance of hormones that regulate appetite. Specifically, lack of sleep has been shown to increase levels of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite, while reducing levels of leptin, a hormone that suppresses appetite. This can lead to overeating and weight gain.
Overall, the best way to promote weight loss is to maintain a healthy balance of hormones, get enough sleep, and eat a balanced diet that is rich in nutrient-dense foods. This is a holistic approach to weight loss, addressing the various factors that can contribute to weight loss resistance and offering actionable advice for overcoming these obstacles.

Considering egg donation as an option can be scary. Although this is not one's first (or even third option), it is a highly effective pathway for those who need it. More importantly, there is a connection fueled by epigenetics that develops between baby and mom during pregnancy. Even though the baby will not inherit her genetics, the baby is 100% biologically hers. That means mom gets to turn on genes through the environment she creates which is why it is important to stay healthy and live a balanced life for a better soil/terrain before, during and after pregnancy.

Let’s debunk the idea that moms after infertility should feel grateful and happy all the time. We do not need to be the perfect mom and never complain. Being a new mom is hard and it's not only normal to need support, but we encourage you to take breaks from parenting out of necessity. Self care is important for every human, especially new moms. After infertility, we often feel guilty reaching out for help when parenting becomes challenging because we think that we should be able to handle it all on our own. Dr. Julia Sen gives her top tips to offset this guilt... including strategies while pregnant instead of waiting for the baby to be born.
Our featured guest Dr. Julia Sen is a registered clinical and counseling psychologist and has been seeing clients, individually, as couples, and in groups for over 20 years. She has dedicated her career to guiding people through fertility, parenting and re-parenting the self. Julia has a heart-centred approach with her clients and integrates both science and spirit into her practice. In a previous episode, Dr. Sen shares stress management tools to support your fertility journey including how to feel less stressed about being stressed because of its potential impact on fertility.
We embrace our curves and aspire to be body positive. Regardless of the number on a scale, or what our size is, here are some important questions to ask:
Am I doing things to take care of myself that makes my body and mind stay healthy and feel sexy?
Do I know who I am?
How do I feel in my body?
The bottom line is that we are all unique individuals. What’s healthy for one person may not be so for another because the relative body mass index, BMI, is less about your weight on the scale, and more about your weight on your frame. To answer the question, should I weigh myself? Yes, but we use it in a positive, safe, and encouraging way and go deep talking about the when, why and how.Resources:

NEWS headlines have highlighted many times that stress is impacting our fertility. We hear well-meaning neighbors and friends telling us to JUST RELAX and that will help us get pregnant. But is stress really the cause of our infertility preventing us from getting pregnant? Can we even take it that next step further and say stress can cause a miscarriage?
One recent study said that higher perceived stress in early pregnancy was associated with an elevated risk of pregnancy loss, with higher risks observed for early hCG-detected pregnancy losses. We reviewed this study and tips and tools to manage stress. Our guest Dr. Julia Sen, Psychologist speaks to how important it is to work on our ability to manage the stress that will hit you on your fertility journey every step of the way for better quality of life, not because of its impact on fertility itself.
The stress is real, it’s intense and learning effective strategies to cope with it is more important than worrying about being stressed. Otherwise you are adding more pressure and yet another thing, in your mind to concern yourself with while trying to make a baby. Stressing about being stressed is common. Dr Julia helps patients pivot by recognizing stress will always be there. She answers our difficult questions around coping strategies since not all strategies are effective for everyone and every stage of fertility.
This episode focuses on pre-conception. Watch out for episode two where she talks about how to pivot while pregnant and postpartum as parents who once struggled to get here. She teaches us easy and effective tools to help us lean into our tenderness after processing our sadness and not feeling guilty about our grief but instead acknowledging it, catching it and meeting it with compassion. Lastly, NO we do NOT have to stay positive all the time. Staying positive will not get us pregnant faster.

Although women often feel responsible for miscarriages, the latest research tells us that men’s sperm contribute to miscarriage rates.
85% of miscarriages are due to abnormal chromosomes which means that there is something wrong with either the egg OR sperm leading to an extra or one less chromosome, says Dr. Kim Garbedian, fertility doctor and medical director at Pollin Fertility Centre.
While we can’t change genetic egg quality or an inevitable miscarriage due to chromosomal errors, we can help with metabolic egg quality. By increasing the metabolic energy of our cells by not smoking or drinking and taking taking Vitamin D supplements, Acai berries and doing things like acupuncture, we may be able to help decrease miscarriage risks. That means that there are things within your control in terms of healthy habits and treatments that may help fuel normal embryo development as a pregnancy progresses.
But whatever the risk factor is at the start of a pregnancy, risk of miscarriage goes down from week to week as pregnancy progresses. That means that if you see a fetal heartbeat at 8 weeks, your chances of miscarrying is less than 5% even if you are 40 (with a risk factor of 40 - 50% at the start of pregnancy). In this podcast, we walk you through things you can do to take back control over your pregnancy.
Any amount of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy may be startling and requires medical attention. That said, the most common cause of bleeding in early pregnancy is due to subchorionic hematoma (SCH) aka blood clot. Dr. Kim Garbedian, Chief Medical director at Pollin Fertility says, “ it’s a good thing because when little blood vessels around the gestational sac break, it creates a clot to stop bleeding much like when you get a papercut.” She goes on to say that almost 50% of women doing IVF develop blood clots and 95% of them go on to have healthy babies.
This means that bleeding is common and it doesn’t often lead to miscarriage … BUT it still causes a lot of stress and anxiety.
So, it’s important to reduce anxiety by seeking the help of your healthcare providers. Why? Because studies show that caring about the patient and providing TLC actually reduces risks of miscarriage!

The world is full of waste and toxins and one of the most important ways to eliminate these is through healthy bowel movements. But pooping is a problem for nearly 20 percent of adults (and 33% of adults over 60) … which can start in infancy. It may not be a lifelong problem but is of concern when taking medications, while trying to conceive, during pregnancy, and postpartum. The good news is that simple every day lifestyle habits can impact it.
Instead of dealing with constipation silently, nurse Susan Wong, Butt Talks TV host, author of The Power of Pooping, and pelvic floor expert, shares tips and tricks to help you poop and feel better both inside, and outside of the Water Closet (WC).

When experiencing irregular or non-existent menstrual cycles or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), doctors may prescribe the Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP). It works but NOT if you want to get pregnant. Furthermore, OCP may come with undesirable side effects such as mood swings, bloating, weight gain, breast tenderness, headaches, increased appetite, and increased risk of blood clots.
Thankfully, there are options - acupuncture and traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Aik Kim Heng, our leading herbalist and menstrual health detective at ALIVE shares current research demonstrating beneficial effects of TCM herbal formulas in PCOS treatment.
Chinese medicine works so well that the National Health Insurance Program in Taiwan covers not only western medicine but also Chinese herbal medicine equally.
A nationwide study, published in 2019, found that 66.43% of women with PCOS sought out TCM for infertility or menstrual disorders.
Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (JWXYS - Supplemented Free Wanderer Powder), the most commonly prescribed herbal formula, plays a vital role in treatment of anxiety, irritability, stress, depression, premenstrual tension, and infertility.
That said, it’s not for all patients. So, if you want results, we strongly advise that you seek help from a licensed herbalist/TCM practitioner like Kim before using Chinese herbal medicine.

When it comes to being pregnant, most women stop smoking and drinking alcohol. And when you struggle to have a baby, you can’t help but worry about IVF drugs’ possible negative impacts.
Although, Dr. Garcia dispelled the myth that IVF drugs cause cancer in episode 20, it doesn’t stop the fears surrounding the impacts IVF drugs may have on the health of your unborn child.
Specifically, Dr. Bentov, a fertility doctor, talks about the risks of taking Metformin during pregnancy because it’s commonly prescribed for diabetes and for women with PCOS that undergo fertility treatment.
The bottom line is, “Whatever happens to the mother happens to the baby”.
That means, mom and baby’s blood concentration of metformin is the same because metformin crosses the placenta.
While embryos are 100% dependent on energy to grow, metformin decreases cellular energy which forces the baby to develop efficiently in the womb even though it's a low energy environment.
This is not a problem until the baby is born and exposed to the western type diet in the land of supersized meals and sugary treats. Dr. Bentov has been researching this topic and found studies where children have high blood pressure and diabetes at the age of 7.
Another recent study speaks to genital birth defects in boy offsprings after the father takes metformin for diabetes.
What’s the antidote? According to Dr. Bentov, EAT Healthy and you don’t need to worry and speak to your doctor to see about alternative choices.

Contagious laughter all started in a park in India. What we’re talking about is Laughter Yoga. Not only does laughing as an exercise release stress, but it’s also a cardio workout and tones the ab muscles better than crunches! Done daily, laughing 10 to 15 minutes a day releases a cocktail of feel good hormones, replenishes oxygen throughout the body, lowers cortisol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and acts as a mild antidepressant. There’s even research showing how laughter increases implantation rates for those undergoing IVF treatments trying to have a baby.
The point is, laughter is healing. Who better to guide us than Lauren Tatner, a laughter yoga instructor?
In this episode of My Fertology, she shows us a short series of chuckling exercises to affect body, mind and soul. And because the body doesn’t know the difference between simulated versus spontaneous giggles, we benefit, (even if we’re not in the mood)!
So, let’s spice things up, tap into our inner child, and snort laugh together!

Watch for Her book: You Are Love - an illustrated interactive book for adults and children. It's all about self-love and finding your fun.to be released October 11th, 2022.
Need a little inspiration and hope? At 39, Lauren was single and although she had not met the right person, she felt whole and complete and knew that it was the right time to have kids. She wanted to be able to share her love, excitement, and Joie de vivre with a child of her own.
The biggest take away she wanted to share was to tune out negativity and replace it with positivity. She did not dwell on statistics or other people’s journeys and believed anything she wanted was possible with the help of technology and her team of care. She did IVF… but in the end, at 40 years old, she conceived naturally with IUI, acupuncture, supplements, abdominal massage, and a healthy attitude. More meds doesn't necessarily get you pregnant faster. It was the lower level of intervention that helped her, aka. Less drugs, more self care and self love.

If you're struggling to have a baby, should you add the herb Vitex (aka Chaste tree) to boost your fertility when there's only so much room in the granny pill box?
There is research to support that Vitex can support hormonal and reproductive health. The results from randomised, controlled trials suggest benefits for Vitex extracts more specifically for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome (aka PMS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder, low libido and latent hyperprolactinaemia. In some studies and in clinic we see that Vitex can help restore or regulate ovulation in certain cases of amenorrhea (lack of ovulation and menstruation).
As healthcare providers, Dr. Tanya and Mary have seen it help:
Although it sounds promising, it's not a cure all. Instead of taking Vitex because it sounds good, we recommend that you seek the help of a TCM practitioner or Naturopathic doctor who specializes in reproductive health and hormones) for more effective, safe, and individualized care.

Ever find yourself scouring the internet looking for that one thing to increase egg quality and chances of getting pregnant? One fertility supplement that can be easily found is DHEA. The good news is that there’s evidence that DHEA can help improve pregnancy rates, specifically for women with a low ovarian reserve.
According to a review of DHEA research; four of five studies analyzed reported increases in pregnancy rates for patients taking DHEA prior to IVF—in one trial, the pregnancy rate more than doubled. Other study results included higher follicle counts, more eggs retrieved, and lower doses of medication required for IVF patients using DHEA before their cycles. It is not known how DHEA works, but we suspect it’s by improving egg quality based on the higher pregnancy rates. It is not a silver bullet treatment because its effects vary from one woman to the next. That's because we are all unique with our individual physiology.
So, consider testing blood work levels before taking DHEA prescribed by a professional and find out when it's NOT recommended.

Are Prenatals necessary? Maybe… The answer is not set in stone because how and what you eat, your age, reproductive health, and digestive function influences the ability to absorb nutrients. This episode, we talk about how the body requires nutrients crucial for egg (and sperm) quality when trying to conceive and fundamental for proper baby development during pregnancy. For many women, including Dr. Tanya and Mary, this requires taking extra supplements and antioxidants.
Do you take prenatals?

Have you heard of the commonly prescribed type two diabetes medication called Metformin? It’s originally derived from French Lilac (Galega officinalis), a plant extracted for its medicinal value to treat diabetes employed in Europe since 1927.
At the fertility clinic, Metformin is commonly prescribed for women with PCOS. It can be effective to regulate periods for some, but Dr. Bentov, REI and expert on Metformin use for fertility in women with PCOS, shares how Metformin works, where it came from and the risks. He tells us that “Metformin makes a good engine turn into a bad engine” as it takes away energy from your cells (or as he puts it, “suffocates the mitochondria.”)
Instead of Metformin, he believes in the power of supporting a woman’s lifestyle and healthy habits over recommending meds. If you have PCOS or have diabetes, do not miss this episode. Learn the pros and cons of taking it and consult with your physician to make an informed choice for your fertility journey.

When it comes to fatigue and weight gain, we need to rule out a thyroid problem. Your thyroid can be thrown off depending on the seasons of your life. So, how should you assess it and when should you treat it or can you just leave it and hope for the best?

Even if you're not, you're going to learn to take charge of your health.

Did you ever think that you'd have a life without kids but then your maternal clock kicked in and the next thing you know an insatiable drive to have kids? The drive is there, but then you realize there are technical issues.
When it comes to creating a family, technical issues can arise in many circumstances from blocked fallopian tubes to needing donor eggs or sperm. It can be even more challenging in a same sex relationship. In some countries, they do not allow adoption to gay parents … which is ridiculous but that’s not todays topic. If you want a baby with your own DNA, you need to find a sperm donor in the instance of a two woman relationship. You need to find an egg donor and a surrogate to carry your baby in the instance of a two man relationship. At the end of the day and beyond the technical challenges, the emotional struggle is not much different as we strive to create our families in heterosexual relationships with fertility challenges.

Even though it may sound woo-woo, Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) precedes Western science by thousands of years. (… which makes it not so woo-woo). In fact, this system of medicine includes different arsenals to approach issues which includes acupuncture, various mind and body practices, Chinese Herbs, Eastern dietary therapy, Tai Chi and Qi Gong. It’s effects on patients both physically and psychologically have been documented for over 3 millenia by TCM physicians making it the longest on-going experiential science.
To see if Chinese medicine is right for you, check out this podcast episode where we are joined by Dr Christina Burns to talk about all things TCM. We’ll do a deep dive into why, how, and when to take herbs. We will look at safety, when not to take it and so much more.

EP 27: Abnormal Embryos Make Healthy Babies - Fact or Fiction?
Subtitle What you should know about IVF genetic testing ( PGT-A)
Do you need genetic testing on IVF embryos? It’s difficult enough to embark on an IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) journey, let alone decide what “add ons'' you need to have to get your baby… faster.
To minimize overwhelm and confusion, we are taking a close look at a recently published article from the NY Times so that you can make an informed choice without regret.
The message, according to the article, is that chromosomal testing (PGT-A) is bad for patients because healthy babies have been born from abnormal embryos … supposedly. Yet, fertility clinics continue to recommend PGT-A which costs thousands of dollars. WHY? There has to be something we are missing…
To get to the bottom of this, we invited our dear friend and trusted fertility specialist, Dr. Prati Sharma and geneticist Nicole Logan, to break down the original scientific paper by Dr. Norbert Gleicher that NY Times is referring to. It turns out the so-called “Abnormal Embryos” that became babies were mainly Mosaic embryos… meaning they were not abnormal. It’s more accurate to say, Mosaic embryos can make healthy babies.
The lesson is don’t choose to test (or not test) based on what you read…. which may be sensationalized or partial truths. Learn from us and dig deeper. This convo is too juicy to skip.

EP 26: Mothering the Mother Within (with Dr. Susan Fox)
With the anticipated Mother's Day coming up, this time and many other holidays can be triggering for those who are trying to conceive.
When every waking thought is to fulfill on becoming a mother, the desire to build or expand one's family may feel like it's out of reach. This desire can build up to an energetic level that creates what we call Liver Qi Stagnation, where the creative potential feels suppressed, and we can begin to feel depressed or angry. Then, in the face of a celebration like Mother's Day, a woman can feel isolated and misunderstood. We grieve for that which we love, and the unrequited love of a conception not happening month over month, possibly year over year amplifies our grief.
So today, it's important to honour mothers in waiting.
It's where we give ourselves permission to stop pretending that everything is all "rainbows and unicorns." Instead, treat ourselves kindly. Today, we speak meaningfully from the heart. We can't wait for you to join our conversation with our dear friend Dr. Susan Fox, TCM doctor who has been supporting women and couples in their fertility journeys for the past 20 years. You deserve to feel heard and held.

EP 24: Organic or No Organic
Do you ever wonder if it’s really necessary to go organic? Is it a farce? Will it make a difference in your health. What fruits and vegetables can I buy that doesn’t have to be organic? Finding reasonably priced Certified organic to lessen pesticide load is possible. Healthy skin longer, younger, liver doesn’t have to work as hard to detoxify so if I do little things to reduce the load of - over the years, consistently over time.
Do you buy the fresh organic that doesn’t look so good or frozen organic?
Mold tends to grow on organic strawberries which is a good thing because it’s live and doesn't have chemicals and better quality. But if they don’t look, choose another fruit.
3 months of organic - sperm assessments are better found in research.
Pushing industry to try to produce more organic. More demand, the better the less we all get. The more the large retailers will buy it and will push the price down. Ultimate is local farm, organic, fresh off the tree.
It can get confusing, better to choose local ; organic first and locally farmed second.
Vitamins and minerals displaced by heavy metals.
How do we balance it out? Go for sources that have lower mercury, higher in omega 3’s.

EP 23: TCM Perspectives
Have you ever looked at your tongue and wondered what it means? Did you know that you can get a lot of information about your body by looking at your tongue, checking your pulse and menstrual cycle blood?
Are you suffering from menstrual pain and wondering what to do about it? Have you ever wanted to treat your pain before it comes!? Getting a proper western diagnosis can be very helpful but so can getting a Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis using your symptom history, tongue and pulse! Although we can take ibuprofen and NSAIDs with each period to address the pain, if we overdo this, we can get stomach gastritis and ulcers. Treating the pain before it comes sounds better than ever.
TCM practitioner, Mary Wong teaches us how to take a proactive approach to menstrual pain by addressing blood stasis. What the heck is blood stasis? Listen in to find out. It's a traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis that is often used when a woman has endometriosis. Endometriosis is a topic we covered in Episode 21 with Dr. Sharma, from a western perspective. Today we discuss how to consider it from a TCM perspective which includes using the Tongue and Pulse as a way to diagnose and treat endo.
How do you deal with blood stasis? You move blood…which kicks menstrual pain to the curb and can improve your quality of life and fertility. Learn the impact of acupuncture and some easy at home treatments to prevent and treat menstrual pain from a TCM perspective. Endometriosis doesn't always cause menstrual pain but for some women it can cause an even more grueling form of menstrual pain. Look out for our next episode where we will discuss effective lifestyle strategies including movement, nutrition and supplementation strategies to improve Endo.

EP 22: Does Endometriosis Cause Infertility? w/ Dr. Prati Sharma
Many women live with endometriosis (Endo) and don’t even know it. Some women with Endo have pain. Some have such debilitating pain, that they can’t even go to school or work when they get their periods… and they just live with it. Then, there are others who don't experience pain at all.
Special guest Dr Prati Sharma, fertility specialist from CREATE fertility ( who we interviewed in episode 15 “Are Prenatal tests wrong”) took the time out of her day to be interviewed after emailing Mary to say we should educate people about Endometriosis because March is “Endo awareness month” This is an episode that you do not want to miss because she did a kick ass job!
Endometriosis is something women may suffer from all year long, month after month so it's important to learn all things endo any time. In this episode we’re talking about how to diagnose and treat it properly from a western medicine perspective. Here are some of the hot Endo topics that she covers:

EP 21: Does IVF Cause Early Menopause? w/ Dr. Ari Baratz
Does IVF put you into early menopause? Hello Magazine led many to believe this to be true when they quoted celebrity Kourtney Kardashian who is currently going through IVF treatments to try to have another baby.
Kourtney said "The medication that they’ve been giving me, put me into menopause. Literally into menopause."
Facing infertility is challenging enough. Worrying about going into menopause prematurely due to IVF, raises unnecessary concerns or fears which might stop you from continuing IVF treatment or you may take it off the table altogether. This is not helpful especially if you are someone who would benefit from IVF treatments (eg. in the case of male factor infertility, blocked fallopian tubes, PCOS, to name a few).
But here’s the thing, there is NO evidence to support this. Mary and I are not Reproductive endocrinologists. We are in the field of natural medicine who think about the whole human. We do not want you to be misinformed by social media and delay your positive outcome of a healthy pregnancy.
The truth is, IVF may create temporary peri-menopause type symptoms but all the research shows that it CANNOT put you into real menopause.
Our guest Dr. Baratz, fertility doctor from CREATE Fertility Center in Toronto gives us the details on why this is not possible and how Kourtney Kardashian’s words were misunderstood and her situation was not properly explained and hence false conclusions were made.
IVF and fertility treatments are a huge investment in time and energy and Dr. Baratz acknowledges all of us who have experienced infertility and sought fertility treatments but he wants us to know that IVF is indeed safe and will not cause menopause.
Mary and I share our personal experiences with IVF including Mary who did go into menopause at 47 (a normal age for menopause) after IVF while I am currently menstruating as we write this summary, 10 years after IVF.
We both recognize however the symptoms of IVF treatments such as TEMPORARY bloating, weight gain, mood changes, hot flushes, night sweats, brain fog, anxiety, changes in menstrual regularity are REAL symptoms you may have or may experience going through IVF. These symptoms are very similar to those experienced by many peri-menopausal women. Mary experienced Brain fog, weight gain, and mood swings through IVF and Tanya did not experience any symptoms from her usual PCOS symptom history.
What’s the bottom line? IVF does NOT cause menopause…it can cause a “menstrual pause” and symptoms some women experience through peri-menopause.
EP 20: Fertility Myth Busting w/ Dr. Meivys Garcia
If you haven’t already, go back and listen to Part 1 of this amazing interview on EP 19!
Do Fertility drugs cause cancer or can IVF cause autism or ADHD? These are some of the most common concerns women have when thinking about fertility drugs.
The short answer is NO.
Even though fertility specialist Dr. Garcia knew better, it didn't stop her from doing endless research just to be sure because she had a cancer scare after 5 rounds of IVF. So, we are super pumped to have her back to share what she has found.
As for increased risks of autism or ADHD after IVF? There's no proof that there is a direct correlation but you need to hear the details to understand the facts because there is more than meets the eye.
Have you heard about the research that IVF babies have higher IQ? Find out if it's too good to be true .... we like the sound of this study when all 3 of us have IVF babies!
Stay till the end because who really wants to do IVF unless you have to? That's why Dr. Garcia covers easy tips for natural conception.

Dr. Meivys Garcia thought that she would become a doctor, get married, have kids and look after them .... and life would be that simple. As a fertility doctor, she had NO idea she would become someone that needed fertility help, herself!
In this episode she gets real and shares her truths including the shame she felt, how she kept her difficulties to herself and didn't feel she could share her fertility struggles with her co-workers, people who helped others with fertility issues. The truth is, no one is immune to challenges which includes infertility. Dr. Garcia embraced her struggles without shame and eventually opened up, got assistance and had 2 children, one at age 33 and one at 40. We are grateful that she is talking about this with us to help and hope that she inspires and empowers you as much as she did us.

Which is why they are candidly sharing the fears they faced going through their own fertility journeys because they want to empower you to let go of your fears.
They want to dispel some myths which will not only save you time and heartache from endless google search but also calm your anxieties by sharing facts and evidence based research to increase your chances of a successful pregnancy.

When you've been trying to have a baby for a long time and you are finally pregnant ... you can't help but want to know if your baby is healthy.
This episode was born because of a recent New York Times article about genetic testing. To get our facts straight, we interview experts fertility doctor Dr. Prati Sharma & genetic counsellor Nikki Logan who break down the tests available and the pros and cons of each to find out how health your baby is.
In the first trimester NIPT, Non-invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is the first screening test that you can get from as early as 9 weeks of pregnancy.
Not only will we, as health professionals discuss our perspectives and personal experiences with prenatal testing and screening, but you will find out what tests and why Dr. Prati, Nikki, Dr. Tanya and Mary did during our own pregnancies.... which were different but thankfully, all of our babies were born healthy.
At the end of the day, there are many tools available to assess the health of your baby. It can be overwhelming which ones to choose but as fertility health experts you can trust, check out this episode and we will help you decrease anxiety, navigate options and set expectations surrounding tests which aren't perfect.

EP 14 Valentine's Day gift - Mindfulness for fertility with Dr. Alda Ngo/Stephanie Curran
In anticipation of Valentine's Day, we wanted to do something special to add lightness to your day because we know that celebrations like this can be triggering and difficult (especially with a pandemic in the backdrop) when trying to start a family and suffering from subfertility.
It may lead you down a slippery slope of non-stop thinking. But here's the thing, your thoughts are not reliable and often filled with all kinds of trash talk generating more worries and fears which you end up believing even though they are made up stories that aren't even true.
So we brought in Dr. Alda Ngo and Stephanie Curran, both Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, who not only shared how mindfulness helped them on their own fertility journeys, but through their expertise, knowledge, and full hearts, gifted you an incredible 7 minute guided meditation. Stephanie who had endometriosis and low ovarian reserve found mindfulness helped her connect back to herself and her husband.
Dr. Alda who had unexplained infertility for 7 years and multiple miscarriages, got a positive pregnancy test the first day of a 10 day silent meditation retreat and anchored herself in the steadiness of her breath and watched the storm of her thoughts without judgment not getting swept away by sitting with them as she made peace with the unknown of the future.
Mindfulness takes practice and gets easier the more you practice. Research shows mindfulness can elevate your mood, flood your brain with happy mood molecules and improve your perception of your fertility journey and in doing so may help you persevere and shorten the time to get pregnant. We hope you love this podcast as much as we did!
Episode 13: How to Survive the two week wait.
... How to avoid going crazy while you wait
We don't know about you, but when it comes to the two week wait (2ww), it's THE WORST! And let's face it, it really tests your patience especially when a day feels like an eternity.
It doesn't matter how much common sense you have, the 2ww kinda makes you... well ... crazy... at least we'll speak for ourselves.
When we were trying to conceive, Mary would look for breast tenderness (as she'd cop a feel multiple times a day) while Tanya would put a pee test up to the light hoping to see a faint positive line even when it was too early.
The point is, one of the toughest parts of the emotional rollercoaster ride of baby making is the TWO WEEK WAIT whether you are trying to conceive naturally or if you are doing an IUI or IVF.
If you are anything like us and want to avoid the struggle, we want to help you thrive during the 2ww and manage the suspense, grab your earbuds and listen to this podcast.
In this episode you will learn...
-The best time to test your pregnancy hormones
-How early to start testing with an at home pregnancy test so you don't waste your time and money
-How to thrive on your two week wait and manage your anxiety
-How much time you should take off after IVF transfer
-To recognize pregnancy symptoms and how to know when you are officially pregnant
EP 12: When to Have S3X To Make Babies - Is it ever too much?
Do you find yourself disconnected with your partner because you're focused on baby making?
Do you feel completely out of sync when your partner can't perform or finish on ovulation day?
Do you feel like you don't know how much or when to have s*x?
Is your biggest challenge being able to try during your fertile window?
If you have any questions about the baby making dance, then you've gotta check out this episode.

My Fertology EP 10: Finding Happiness – Being With All Your Emotions
Anger is part of the human condition and one that deserves a lot of attention because we don’t like it, we repel away from it and it can be caustic and painful for ourselves and for others if we lash out in anger.
We love to intersect research with the wisdom of medicine that prevailed modern medicine by 1000’s of years. Medical and psychological Research shows that holding onto anger and resentment increases risk for anxiety, depression, insomnia, high blood pressure, ulcers, migraines, backaches, heart attack and even cancer!
