Hi, it’s G3 and we are dropping a fresh episode of In Search of Green Marbles on Friday, September 1st, which of course is the Friday before Labor Day. We are doing this in anticipation of a busy Fall for the markets and there is no shortage of topics that we will want to cover – so we’re getting a head start.

One of the key topics in our purview is whether or not there will be a big infusion of stimulus coming from China that will summon forth animal spirits domestically and support global markets. Is this a realistic expectation or are we all just waiting for Gadot? That’s the question we’ll be covering this week with Weiss China expert, Mike Edwards.

Please check important disclosures at the episode.

  • Why does Mike frame the discussions about China's attempts to boost economic growth as an "is" vs. "ought" debate? {2:03]
  • How is 'stimulus' influencing the sentiment amongst Chinese consumers and market participants? [9:53]
  • Why does Mike expect China will not deploy major measures to surpass a 5% growth rate? [12:34]
  • Are market participants rooting for the arrival of a stimulus "bazooka" influencing the outcome of economic decisions in China? [21:10]
  • Many Chinese banks are trading dramatically below book value. Does this indicate a broken financial system? [27:21]

This week, we are delighted to present a previous episode of In Search of Green Marbles that featured Jena Roche, Weiss’s Director of Investor Relations and Marketing. But the timing is not coincidental, as tomorrow, August 26th, is Women’s Equality Day.

Thanks to a 1973 Joint Resolution of Congress, Women’s Equality Day was established to commemorate August 26th,1920, which marked the day in which Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby quietly signed the recently ratified 19th Amendment in his home – without any fanfare – that gave American women the right to vote. In doing so, a movement that started over a century earlier could finally declare victory.

The journey towards equality beyond suffrage has made many strides since that day 103 years ago, but it’s been a struggle. For example, it took all the way to 1974 and the enactment of the The Equal Credit Opportunity Act, before women were able to apply for credit cards and other loans in their own name, regardless of their marital status. And believe it or not, it took all the way until May 12th, 1987, before the first coeducation class graduated from Columbia College.

So, while women have made great strides, Weiss believes that it’s important to remember that the achievements made by women have been hard fought and have taken way more time than they should have. And the fight for progress continues, which is why we wanted to take this week to recognize one of our formidable women warriors.

Please check important disclosures at the end of the episode.

Weiss’s Mike Edwards joins G3 to provide his political assessment on whether or not a shutdown is likely to occur. On this episode, G3 has an actual water cooler conversation with Jordi Visser, where they discuss how the convergence of data and analytics, AI, and the wealth of the baby boomers will lead to dramatic changes in our approach to living longer, healthier lives. Now, Jordi believes that, as people live longer and healthier, it will have a profound impact on the markets and our economy, and we will be exploring all of that in the weeks and months ahead. But to establish the context for this longevity series, I spoke to Jordi about his own health journey, because as anyone who knows him knows, he's obsessed with anti-aging and has gone way down the rabbit hole on this topic, and believe me, he's got lots to say. So please check out important disclosures at the end of the episode and get ready for a different kind of green marbles. On this episode of In Search of Green Marbles, G3 will be talking about the upcoming midterms with Weiss’s Mike Edwards. Our focus will be on assessing the probabilities of how things will shape up this fall and discussing the potential impact on markets associated with the different outcomes. And on an editorial note, after we recorded this episode, Mike spent a day on Capitol Hill meeting with legislators and their staff. So, G3 reached out to him by phone to record an addendum to this episode and he kindly obliged. The sound quality is a little different, but as usual, Mike speaks with a very clear voice. So please check disclosures at the end of the episode and with that welcome.

With G3 to talk about the Fed and where we go from here is Weiss’s bond expert, Lundy Wright. Lundy has been watching and trading the bond markets for a long time and brings a ton of wisdom to the table. Greetings everyone. On this week’s Green Marbles, G3 has Jordi Visser on the other side of the mic to talk about a topic near and dear to his heart. Have you guessed it? The topic is Crypto. In the wake of the recently reported August CPI number, you may be wondering how the crypto bulls like Jordi are feeling. And G3 was certainly interested in getting Jordi’s viewpoint, especially because of the widely anticipated Ethereum merge and all the implications that could follow. They get into that as well as many other crypto-related topics on this week’s podcast. So please check the disclosures at the end of the episode and stick around for this one. And with that, welcome. As we close out summer and head into Labor Day weekend, we decided to re-air one of our most listened to episodes thus far, which features our resident expert on all things fixed income and the Federal Reserve, Lundy Wright. Given the nature of the topics for this episode, we believe this episode remains highly relevant in the current market regime.

Thank you to our loyal listeners. We will be back next week with a new episode.

Some folks may have heard this week’s episode (43 - Sino-US Relations—It’s Complicated) prematurely released as episode 42 (Chinese Policy & Politics (See Resources)); 42 and 43 are companion episodes so if you’ve heard one, please take this opportunity to listen to the other and we do apologize for any confusion.

In this episode, G3 continues the discussion with Mike Edwards on China policy, here focusing on Sino-US relations and how the US is perceived by China's policymakers. In short, it's complicated. However, Mike draws upon his experiences and interactions in and with China to delineate the competing schools of thought when it comes to dealing with the West. As part of the discussion, Mike also covers America’s doctrine of strategic ambiguity and current tensions over Taiwan, the Russia-Ukraine situation, and the tightrope that Chinese policymakers are walking leading into the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party.

Today, G3 is going to present the second episode of our summer primer series. In this series, we step away from the latest trends in the market and instead focus on topics that we believe can serve as useful building blocks for overall market understanding. Here, G3 talks to Mike Edwards, Weiss's deputy CIO, about how the Chinese government is organized and how things operate in practice. Mike does a great job of demystifying several longstanding questions G3 has had, and we hope you get as much out of this discussion as we did. And as always, please check disclaimers at the end of the episode.

Today, we’re going to mix things up in a few ways. Number one, G3 hosts both Jordi Visser and Mike Edwards from Weiss. So please stick around and check out important disclosures at the end of the episode. And if you feel like throwing some positive karma our way in the form of a review, we’d appreciate it. Today we have two members of the Weiss team, Jordi Visser and Laura Drobbin, to talk about Weiss’s recent NFT drop. That’s right. Weiss dropped an NFT, which is a portrait of the firm’s founder, George Weiss, set against a pixelated cityscape, with important touchstones of his life incorporated into the work.

To our knowledge, this drop represents a first for a traditional financial services firm, and no, it is not for sale. But it is most definitely designed to plant a flag – or innovation flag to be more precise. So please check out disclosures at the end of the episode and get ready to hear our discussion about non fungible tokens. This one, you don’t want to miss.

About: Consistent with its mission to invest in people, partnerships, and a purposeful future, Weiss Multi-Strategy Advisers launched a weekly podcast, In Search of Green Marbles, in November 2021. Primary topics of discussion include exponential innovation, the US-China relationship, longevity’s impact on financial markets, and the latest economic themes. Hosted by G3, featured guests include Weiss President and CIO Jordi Visser, Deputy CIO Mike Edwards, and Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager Lundy Wright.

So, whether you are at the beach or not, we invite you to kick back and join us for this one. But please, just make sure to check important disclosures at the end of the episode from our lifeguard, otherwise known as our Compliance department.

In this episode, G3 speaks with Weiss's Mike Edwards about a host of issues that all tie back to a recurring theme. The theme relates to the unintended consequences associated with American policies and principles on sustainability, foreign policy, trade, and human rights. The Fed is still jawboning about inflation and talking as tough as it possibly can. Many market sages are following suit by making dire predictions of the intractability of current inflation, but Weiss's Jordi Visser is looking at things differently. He is beginning to use the term 'deflation' as he articulates his analysis. In this episode of In Search of Green Marbles, Jordi and G3 talk about the recent data he has seen on growth, inflation, and debt and why in his view we aren't headed into a 1970s-style period any time soon. Ever since May's CPI print blew away expectations, the already jittery global capital markets have become even more unsettled. And on Wednesday, June 15th, the Fed responded by raising rates 75 basis points, which is the first time the Fed has hiked by that amount since November 1994.

Back then the Fed was pretty successful in engineering a soft landing in the economy, but the circumstances are very different this time around. To make sense of it all, we are pleased to welcome Weiss's bond expert Lundy Wright. So please check disclosures at the end of the episode and get ready for this one.

If you attend a crypto conference these days, you’d be hard-pressed to find many people who are bullish on Bitcoin as we head into the second half of the year. But Weiss’s Jordi Visser doesn’t look at the largest crypto asset like others do. He sees Bitcoin as part of a macro story that features China in a starring role.

Today, G3 talks with Jordi about the green marbles he’s found on why Bitcoin and China are linked, and we’ll also discuss the role played by animal spirits. So please stick around, check important disclosures at the end of the podcast and get ready for one of the most bullish takes on Bitcoin you’ll find just about anywhere.

When handicapping how markets will perform during the second half of the year, there is perhaps no bigger X factor than China, both in terms of how the government will act to combat the omicron variant while trying to open up and in terms of how its government will seek to stimulate its economy.

On today’s episode, G3 has Weiss’s deputy CIO Mike Edwards on Green Marbles to help make sense of it all. You may want to take notes on this one and also take note of our disclosure at the end of the episode. And with that, welcome.

Ever since the winds of war in Ukraine started blowing much has been made of the supposed rock-solid alliance between Russia and China. As conveyed by some in the Western media, Putin's Russia is a vassal to China, and therefore China is implicated in the war whether it likes it or not. But Weiss' Mike Edwards has a different and far more comprehensive view of the China-Russia relationship as it relates to this war, what it means for financial markets, and how deep the alliance runs.

The situation in Ukraine is abhorrent. As commodities continue their volatile ride higher, well-known, and revered market participants are warning of an impending recession, or worse, and then there is the Fed. The Fed has gotten hyper-hawkish in a hurry with talk of multiple 50-basis point hikes on the table. If you combine these points, it is easy to understand why so many market participants have become so bearish. Weiss's Jordi Visser sees things differently. He thinks we will likely hit all-time highs for the S&P this year.

Oil is making dramatic moves. Metals, grains, and other commodities are also snapping heads. Meanwhile, as Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky inspires the world, American and European leaders are talking tough and expressing a willingness to endure pain in pursuit of punishing Putin's aggression.

As the headlines roll in at a furious pace, it is understandable why allocators, financial advisors, and investors may be concerned that the current crisis could lead to financial contagion.

In the second part of this two-part series on de-dollarization, G3, CIO Jordi Visser and Deputy CIO Mike Edwards convene to discuss the role of the dollar in the emerging technology battle between China and the US, how crypto may figure into a de-dollarizing world, and the scenarios under which the dollar can reassert itself globally. The conversation begins with an in-depth discussion on how the technological battle between the US and China is connected to efforts by both superpowers to assert the role of their respective currencies. In analyzing the current state of play, Mike discusses China’s potential supremacy in the area of quantum computing and reminds us that China has greater ability to think long-term when it comes to using technology to advance its currency. Additionally, now that VC dollars have filtered throughout the world and are significantly less invested in the US compared to the 1990s, Jordi maintains that the blockchain will be disruptive to all incumbents, especially to mega cap technologies companies.

To better understand what will likely cause de-dollarization rates to hasten, Jordi describes a three-pronged scenario in which oil prices continue to climb until climate change is resolved, inflation rates in the US will exceed global norms, and how Web 3.0 will accelerate blockchain competition. To conclude the conversation, G3 quizzes Jordi and Mike on some greenback trivia.

In 1996, the columnist Thomas Friedman said that no two countries that both had McDonald's had fought a war against each other since each got its McDonald's. Unfortunately, that theory, known as the Golden Arches Theory of Conflict Prevention, hasn’t aged well. Indeed, economics and trade may still matter in many parts of the world, but when it comes to analyzing the situation in Ukraine and understanding Vladimir Putin's motives, the Western playbook may not be of much use anymore. In this episode of In Search of Green Marbles, G3 speaks with Weiss's deputy CIO, Mike Edwards, to learn how he's analyzing this very tense situation that has the world, and the financial markets in particular, on edge.

For just about every American alive today, there have been not two certainties in life, but three. Yes, death is a certainty, at least for now, taxes are a certainty too, but then there’s the dollar. Sure, it goes up and down, but dollar dominance across the world has been constant for many decades. And that dominance has played an important role in the projection of American power and influence. But now there is reason to believe that we are entering into a new phase, which we are calling de-dollarization. In the first of a two-part series, G3 sits down with CIO Jordi Visser and Deputy CIO Mike Edwards to discuss this critical issue.

Fed watching has become a national sport of sorts. Given the unprecedented actions taken by the Fed to navigate the country through Covid, this sport has perhaps grown faster than any other in our nation’s recent history. And, of course, what sport would be complete without a constant stream of new information to analyze? For that, we have economic numbers that drive the narrative behind the great guessing game of what the Fed will do, and when. In this episode, G3 chats with bond pro, Lundy Wright, Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager at Weiss, to put the Fed’s actions and recent economic data into context.

Jordi’s new paper has it all—juggling, neuroplasticity, his Bayesian views of asset allocation, and why reading books is a waste of time.

How does rabbit hole learning relate to the art of juggling? A formative experience for Jordi was meeting Jill Bolte Taylor who helped him understand that you can structurally change your brain by learning new things. Juggling, in fact, will change the brain and, while it is harder to learn this skill as an older person, the benefits are the same as that of a younger person.

Jordi’s prognostications for 2022 were a somewhat insignificant part of the paper, which flies in the face of most people getting out their crystal balls this time of year. This was largely because Jordi views Web 3.0 as being a car in the left lane doing 150 mph while everyone is focusing on the car in the right lane with hazard lights on doing 45 mph. With the talent and capital flooding the crypto space, Jordi was deliberate in minimizing the traditional world.

Jordi thinks Bitcoin and Ethereum will continue to outperform in 2022 because they are representative of an ecosystem. The key distinction here is that it is a mistake for investors to think they can pick successful companies or entrepreneurs as they did with Web 2.0. In other words, it’s not about companies this time around, it’s about the ecosystem, and investors cannot apply the same framework to both.

The talent and capital drain on traditional finance will have huge implications. Channeling Brené Brown’s quote, “vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change,” Jordi says that senior leaders at the traditional banking firms have to be vulnerable and willing to get into something that they know very little about. They must embrace change rather than think the solution is giving employees more money as an incentive not to defect.

Jordi has always believed that books are a waste of time. This is particularly true when the topic is crypto because it’s moving too fast for anything in a book to not be dated or stale. Another example of this is mRNA technology. In both cases, the technology is moving too quickly for the publishing process of a book to keep pace. In Jordi’s view, this discounts Malcolm Gladwell’s notion of putting in 10,000 hours to become an expert because, by the time you have done so, you’ve missed so many other things. Alternatively, rabbit hole learning is probably more effective for crypto or NFTs, for example, because it is more tethered to the most current knowledge and applications of the space. This information is found on the internet or Twitter, not in books.

Finally, as the CIO of a firm that largely trades public equities, Jordi is so preoccupied with Web 3.0 and crypto because he believes Ethereum, Bitcoin, and the blockchain are disrupting the world. Therefore, there will be winners and losers. It is Weiss’ job to understand which companies stand to benefit from this disruption. In closing, juggling and rabbit hole learning both require neuroplasticity, which will be the theme of 2022.

But don’t read the book on how to juggle, just start!

Weiss seeks to hire people with the right combination of IQ, EQ, and AQ. The latter is defined as adversity quotient or adaptability quotient. Jordi looks at specific traits in people to measure their AQ, which include flexibility, agility, curiosity, and learning. In addition, grit and resilience reflect the ability to overcome adversity, which is an equally important attribute.

The rise of quant strategies that accelerated in 2009 is an example of how Jordi and the firm had to be adaptable. The approach Weiss sought to take was a human+machine approach, reflecting the firm’s view that combining the two forces would lead to better outcomes. Today, the rise of cryptocurrencies is another example where adaptation to a changing environment will be needed in the years to come.

Jordi ties the September 11th attacks together with the famous Emerson quote: “Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood. He believes that AQ allows one to view 9/11 as part of a journey. This is hard with such a tragic event and, in Jordi’s case, when you lose your best friend, but the wisdom of knowing you can overcome adversity is paramount.

Can AQ be learned or nurtured? Jordi emphatically believes the answer is yes to both and he has sought to accelerate this process with the younger people at Weiss by getting them to open up about their experiences. His key question: What did you learn from this experience? This helps Jordi recognize an individual’s personal growth and wisdom.

The final topic of conversation is about Jordi’s grandmother, Tex, who served as Jordi’s inspiration around AQ and was the topic of a recent whitepaper that Jordi wrote. How do Seabiscuit, Cinderella Man, and Babe Ruth connect with AQ? Listen in to hear the answer.

For context, the prior two episodes in our series on Web 3.0 define the concept of Web 3.0 and then delve into the pronounced, persistent, and pervasive nature of cryptocurrencies. Here, Jordi starts by making the connection between managing portfolios and running businesses, both having required him to investigate issues that he did not understand enough. In the past, this required him to spend time in China and Silicon Valley, but now, Jordi is investing his energy into NFTs.

Jordi says of all the things he has studied to fit within a macro framework, NFTs are possibly the most important and innovative approach to thinking that he’s ever witnessed. The two most important traits that impact Jordi’s macro thinking are the amount of capital and talent flowing into the area. But relative to other important trends, which took decades to impact the macro economy, NFTs are making an impact at an exponential pace.

Based on his early interest in the blockchain, Jordi references a TED Talk entitled, “How the Blockchain will Radically Transform the Economy”. Fast forward to today, Jordi found himself re-watching this TED Talk and finding that everything predicted about the blockchain then has materialized with NFTs today. Jordi and G3 acknowledge the hoopla surrounding NFTs in the art world, but when it comes to determining an appropriate valuation for digital art, Jordi recalls a lesson he learned at Manhattan College based on the famous quote that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. So, in Jordi’s mind, it’s not a question if the $69.3 million fetched by Beeple in March for a digital work is worth it. In fact, Jordi believes the work may wind up being worth much in the long run, given its seminal place within the NFT art market.

Beyond art, the other area that Jordi sees NFTs impacting the broader economy include real estate, which Jordi says is the original non-fungible asset. The adoption is happening at a faster pace than even experts in the space can fully appreciate. Jordi is also bullish on so-called “experiential NFTs,” which enable people to relive special sports moments, and utility-based NFTs. The conversation concludes with a discussion of play-to-earn gaming, which Jordi believes is a global phenomenon that will have far-reaching implications for the macroeconomy.

Even if you don’t think you’re trading China, if you are trading a market, you are trading China in one way or the other. In other words, there is no avoiding China for global market participants. That’s why this episode of In Search of Green Marbles is relevant to just about everyone.

The episode begins with Mike providing the necessary context when thinking about policy imperatives in terms of the relationship between policy and markets in China versus the US. If policy is the expression of intent to shape behavior through rules and incentives, in China, that happens on a very short feedback loop. In the US, this frequently happens on a broken feedback loop or a much longer loop. So, the ability to pivot and have impact is much shorter in China. This is a critical distinction when we think about the relative global policy and the synchrony.

Aside from synchrony, the other key pillar in Mike’s framework is globalization. As we think about globalization, Mike reminds us that since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the export of cheap Chinese labor has enabled market participants to inflate profit margins and keep the cost of goods down, while lifting millions out of poverty in China and creating a massive middle class.

Broadly speaking, the CCP is trying to keep people happy and satisfied enough that there’s no actual mandate for significant change. As a political force for stability, we are also seeing the echoes of a “Beijing Backstop” in markets, which is to say that large market moves or massive volatility, if destabilizing, is anathema to the very political legitimacy that has been so hard-fought over several regimes. This Beijing Backstop is different from the “Fed Put” in the US in so far as the former has more ballast to ensure that the will of the government is translated into the desired outcome.

Looking ahead to 2022, G3 ponders if it is possible for the Biden administration to advance a pro-climate agenda, appear to be doing something on inflation, and maintain the perception that they are tough on China. Practically speaking, Mike says no. Take, for example, solar panels. China is the largest, cheapest producer globally of solar panels and solar is a big part of the green agenda in the US. Having an anti-dumping case and massive tariffs on Chinese solar flies in the face of our priorities.

What would any discussion about Chinese policy and markets be without touching on the Evergrande situation? Mike asserts that the most important number to remember here is 89. That is the percentage of Chinese households that own their own home. By comparison, this number is 64% in the US, 60% in Japan, and 50-51% in Germany. So, when you talk about the role of the property market in the perceived well-being of the common person in China, it’s damn important. And with the diversification of personal net worth in China not being as robust as other developed markets, this creates a situation whereby the CCP cannot tolerate the level of protests and indignation if people were to experience their net worth crash due to a faltering property sector.

Finally, G3 and Mike discuss the possibility of an invasion of Taiwan. Mike cuts through the noise by reminding us that the threat of invasion is useful to Beijing and Washington for political reasons. However, at Weiss, we believe in the wisdom of markets, which would suggest that stock markets in Taiwan would not be at all-time highs and IP would be fleeing the island if the citizens were worried about an imminent invasion.

For a recap of this week’s episode of In Search of Green Marbles, we’ll start at the end with an anecdote about a possible Leonardo da Vinci painting, Salvador Mundi. While there are questions about the painting’s provenance, just by the “maybe” aspect of it being a da Vinci, the price soared from $1,100 to $450 M in less than a decade. This is purely a function of narrative and scarcity, which reflects the nature of the blockchain’s value.

Picking up where episode three left off on Web 3.0, this one focuses on the persistent, pervasive, and pronounced nature of the movement and what this means for cryptocurrencies. To begin, Jordi states that in his discussions with sophisticated investors at pension plans, endowments, and foundations, most remain skeptical, afraid of being late to the party and/or simply do not know how to invest in the space. And for those with a long enough career to have experienced a few bubbles, this is a very hard story for people to believe. This isn’t surprising because it’s hard for people to separate the entrenched connection between governments and money. To unpack this narrative, Jordi refers to Yuval Noah Harari, who wrote Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, who said, “the most successful story ever told is money.” This perfectly illustrates the skepticism many have with the crypto space.

While the early phases were characterized by nefarious use cases and bubbles or volatility, the notion that crypto is a Ponzi scheme is a topic that G3 and Jordi take aim against. This idea in and of itself is laced with hypocrisy when one considers there is approximately $2tn hard currency, yet there are $140tn in assets. Furthermore, using the post-Lehman toolkit, M2 (cash, deposits, easily converted assets), grew by an astounding 30% in the last 20 months. This stopped stabilized asset prices and stopped everyone from selling at once, but the Ponzi scheme continued. The point is that the scrutiny applied to the crypto space should also be applied to the fiat system.

In the end, Jordi and G3 make the case that digital assets have inherent value due to scarcity and authenticity, just as is the case with physical assets. And because of rising inequality many, in effect, are saying, I like the crypto Ponzi scheme better than the old fiat Ponzi scheme because the former has more equitable distribution.

In 2013, Weiss developed its human+machine approach to help the firm make better decisions related to asset allocation and talent assessment. There are three parts of the baseball card that are used to create a composite scoring basis: profit and loss, the ability to run a neutral portfolio, and turnover, or what is referred to internally as behavioral alpha.

Today the core engine of this approach is the same but, like with baseball, you had the original statistics, and now you have advanced statistics. Along these lines, what has changed over the years in Jordi’s estimation is that IQ is commoditized by computers.

If that’s true, where do humans still have an edge?

Jordi believes that the human’s edge is being able to be anticipatory, so while computers can now win at chess, it’s still better to have a human+machine vs. human or machine approach. Moving forward in a post-covid world, Jordi doesn’t believe that history will matter as much as it used to. If that’s the truth, computers and discretionary managers will be competing in a fairer fight.

The biggest advantage of the baseball cards has been transparency for all parties—management, portfolio managers, partners, investors, clients, etc. In general, this has fostered a sense of community as all parties feel involved. For the portfolio managers, in particular, it serves as a form of portfolio management therapy to visualize winning and losing patterns and it helps to talk through the scenarios that didn’t work. The distinction here is that the baseball cards act as a performance optimization tool rather than what Jordi calls autopsy risk management. Just the same, by having these analytics available daily, they act like a daily physical so that losing patterns can be detected before they become a larger problem.

In Part 1 of a series, Jordi and G3 discuss Web 3.0, which is a decentralized internet that is home to crypto, NFTs, DeFi, and other permissionless applications. As someone who claims not to be a technologist but rather someone on a journey of curiosity, Jordi talks about Web 3.0 in a simple and straightforward way.

For context, Jordi sets the table by defining Web 1.0 as getting the internet onto everyone’s PC and Web 2.0 as bringing mobility and interactivity into the fold. The origins of Web 3.0 began on Halloween of 2008, right after the Lehman debacle, when Satoshi Nakamoto released their famed Bitcoin whitepaper. Fast forward to today, and a key aspect of the whitepaper, decentralization, is now at the center of Web 3.0. This is important considering that the birth of Bitcoin led people to begin thinking about the centralization of banking, corporations, and the government, and how this is adversely impacting their lives. Growing inequality has amplified this to an even greater extent.

One of the more exciting aspects of the conversation is a discussion of whether Amazon and Web 3.0 will get along. Jeff Bezos of Amazon famously said, “your margin is my opportunity.” However, Web 3.0 is essentially doing it in reverse and the users are saying, “your margin is our anger.”

Finally, on the topic of NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, G3 and Jordi discuss how property rights are a necessity to make a democracy a democracy, and how artists stand to benefit most from this movement. From an investor’s point of view, when you are determining when you should start paying attention to something, you must determine how fast the movement is, and this movement is fast.

Host G3 and Jordi Visser, President & CIO of Weiss, ponder the implications of the organized and non-unionized labor force experiencing newfound leverage to dictate terms in an economy long on cash, but short on people to satisfy current demand. And is now the perfect time for a labor strike?

A pivotal question in this dialogue is whether labor unions have a point. Labor’s percentage of corporate profits has long been declining, and Jordi opines that corporate profits may be able to handle wages going up for a little while. The real issue is if inflation comes down next year while wages continue to move higher. This will be the most important story for companies at the idiosyncratic level and the overall market.

Jordi walks us through his framework for looking for the green marbles when studying how the labor issue will impact the economy. When doing so, Jordi looks for things that are pronounced, pervasive, and persistent. And all the data—ISM, employment, supplier, and household data—are showing signs that the labor shortage is likely to continue, which, of course, will impact GDP and inflation.

There’s an anecdote from Jordi’s training in handicapping horses that relates to how we should be thinking about taking a non-consensus view. It’s critical to understand that betting on the favorite is often not the right way to go because there is a lot of information built into those odds and, therefore, the opportunity to extract a disproportionate gain is not there.

Finally, G3 asks Jordi to talk about the future of work and how that will impact the markets. How does this all translate to the markets? Tune in to find out.

Host G3 asks Jordi Visser, President & CIO, to make the distinction between negative yields and negative real rates.
