āThe eye never forgets what the heart has seenā. The sad reality of extreme climate events raging across Africa and the globe featured in our news headlines of late has been devastating and has formed disturbing images in our hearts and minds that may never fade.
Specifically, this time, Nigeria is in the eye of the storm. The country is facing the worst flood in a decade, with the latest figures showing that the flood has cost over 600 lives, displaced up to 1.3million people, and destroyed over 200,000 homes. Over twenty-seven of Nigeriaās 36 states have been affected.
While the floods experienced across Africa make for a sorry, heart-wrenching site, adequately addressing them requires that we go back to the root courses and foundational risk drivers and start devising solutions from that level. One of the critical aspects that will need to be in place is a proper mechanism of coordinating this integrated approach that leverages environmental and climate solutions to address the flood menace. This coordination is required because we currently have different overlapping agencies in countries that address these risks. Most countries will have emergency response agencies, disaster management agencies, flood control agencies, even health emergency agencies as well as drought control agencies, as well as different strategies and pieces of legislation such as the national adaptation actions and the climate change act, among key ones - all whose mandates overlap and contribute in one way or another, to addressing floods. All these increase the risk of duplication of efforts that is not only incoherent but inefficient.
As a solution, country climate action plans called Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which convene environmental actions across different sectors, provide a framework through which the efforts of all these agencies and initiatives in a country can be harmonized and coordinated to ensure synergy is achieved in aligning them to drive the implementation of the above-integrated approaches to addressing the flood menace in Africa. This coordination mechanism that NDCs provides is critical and will result in savings for countries and maximize the much-needed synergy between agencies whose interventions may overlap and duplicate. This coordination approach needs to be urgently prioritized. While this will not be actualized in a day, the best news is that rolling out these solutions can start today because all that is needed is within reach. In this way, our chances for success are enhanced because we know, in an insightful African proverb, ādo not look where you fell, but where you slippedā.

5 Things We Should Say to Ourselves More Often
āI will eat as I love myself. Move as I love myself. Speak as I love myself. Live as I love myself. Today!ā
āYes, I will be too busy working on my grass to notice if yours is greener.ā
āNo, I cannot control everything that happens to me; I can only control the way I respond to what happens. In my response is my power.ā
āI will not get caught up in what couldāve been or shouldāve been. I will look instead at the power and possibility of what is, right now.ā
āI will think less about managing my problems and more about managing my mindset.ā
A mind well-trained with thoughts like these is one step ahead of the inevitable negativity life challenges us with. And we all need practice, lots and lots of practice. Because just like every muscle in the body, the mind needs to be exercised to gain strength. It needs to be worked consistently to grow and develop over time. If you havenāt pushed your mind in thousands of little ways over time, of course itāll crumble on the one day that things get really challenging.
The bottom line is, despite the real-world challenges you face, the biggest and most complex obstacle you will have to overcome personally is your own mind.In other words, you arenāt responsible for everything that happens to you, but you ARE responsible for undoing the self-defeating thinking and behavioral patterns that these undesirable experiences create.

We must develop our standard. What is your benchmark The opposite of standard is convenience. The only reason that people would not live up to their standard is is because its more convenient to stand. Whenever you're going to keep your standard do what is right, it's going to be inconvenient at times. Truth is sometimes an inconvenience because it will get you in trouble but standard is what we must strive to be and keep. An elderly Carpenter wanted to retire from his house-building profession. So he went to his employer, the contractor, and tendered his resignation. The employer looked at him and said, ācould you build one last house as a personal favourā. The carpenter didnāt like it. He resulted in using poor quality and used inferior material. In the end, he invited his employer to inspect the project. After reviewing the project, the employer handed him the front door key and said, this is my gift for you for the many years of service youāve worked so hard for me. The carpenter couldnāt believe it. Had he known that he was building his own house for a moment, he would have given it some artistry, finesse, and added superior materials, but this revealed his standards. This revealed who he was under no supervision. This showed his attitude towards work and his employer. This wants we see every day and happens across the world and our continent. We define our standards from supervision. If supervision were eliminated, our true colours would come out. We resign long before we resign. We get out of that job long before we get out of the door of that organisation. Add we still wonder why we are not growing. You see, men and women list others while they are dispensable; they are not replaceable. Once they leave that organisation, It will be tough for anyone to square feet in their shoes. I asked you tonight. What is your standard? As an employee, what is this standard? As an employer, what is your bar? As a husband, wife, friend, mentor, or business partner to someone? What is your standard to others? What is your standard as a mentor if we give your mentorship certificate? One of the reasons why many people never achieve their goals in life is because there is a mismatch between their goals and their standards. But youāre looking for a job, and thereās a mismatch between the job you are applying for and your personal standard. Thereās a mismatch between the salary youāre looking for and your personal standard. There is a mismatch between the girl you want to date. Add your personal standard.

Transformation is not about how we look. It's about what we exist for. Remember, the purpose of everyone is to be useful. The usefulness of turning challenges into opportunities. That's the why of what we must live for. We must become useful and turn the environmental challenges we all face today into opportunities to touch many lives positively. Anything less than this is not transformation. Understanding challenges and devising solutions to solve them is transformational development.
We must always push substance over form. That's how we can transform.
Never allow anyone to define you using a pencil test. Where you come from should be your pride. Focus on giving your best in whatever you do and do it to bring impact. That's what matters, and to do this, we urgently need faith and self-belief that we can become the solutions we seek. This is the essence of #innovativevolunteerism, which is the hallmark of leveraging skills and talents to turn challenges into opportunities through the #climateaction lens.
We must stop looking for reasons that impede us to drive transformational development. Just because you are told you cannot do it doesn't mean you can't try. To all the young people, never fail to try. You have a voice to complain, which means that you have agency. Some people don't just have the opportunity to get information. So if you can complain, know that others don't even have the chance to complain. Always ask yourself who should fix the challenges you complain about, and as you ask who should fix them, ask yourself what your role in improving them is and what have you done to fix them. Look into the mirror.
Excellence is a habit, not an event. It's nothing that is sold in a market. It is not about complaining alone without playing your part to do what is needed. Little actions collectively done can transform an entire society. Are you playing your part?.
We need excellence to drive transformational #ClimateAction #ClimatePreneurship

Climate Action is with us already, and our voices matter. in this second episode, Dr Munang explains the power of effort and focus in driving climate action
Effort is what creates success. Comfort doesn't co-exist with progress. If you want Comfort, know that can't go well with success and progress. 99% of effort, persistence, consistency, hard work, and dedicated passion birth progress and success.
If you want to succeed, don't run towards what society is doing. Go in the opposite direction and devise solutions to turn challenges into opportunities. If you run to where everyone is going, you will notice that everybody wants to do the same thing. There is no prosperity in that direction. But if you go the opposite way, you will learn something new and do something new. That's how new knowledge gets generated, and many will start flocking towards you. With new knowledge and ideas in solving problems, many will run back to catch up with you. But this time, you have already moved forward. The lesson is that you must be prepared to do what others are not doing because everyone would be doing it if it were easy. Success doesn't happen where there is ease. Ease is a threat to progress. Be prepared to be misunderstood if you are willing to become innovative in providing solutions to the challenges we face. You need to develop unwavering faith in what you want and, at the same time, develop the resilient mindset to focus and create results because that's what matters. That's what we need now to devise #climateaction solutions to turn challenges into opportunities. #mindset #opportunities #success #society #InnovativeVolunteerism
