Today is a special episode for two reasons. First, we are talking about the applicant experience from the employee perspective. Being on the job market teaches applicants a lot about what to expect, what to look for, and most importantly, what to avoid while looking. Second, it is my first in person podcast recording! My colleague and friend, Jared Glasser who has written about employment matters and operates his own work-related comic strip (https://jaredglasser.com/) joins me today.

It's in everyone's best interest when employees do so, but getting to that point has been a long-standing difficulty for employers. Today's guest, Vidhi Sanders with Capital Group, has helped launch a program that can help companies better engage their employees and improve retirement readiness.

Anyone in the field of HR knows how crazy the talent situation is in the US. High turnover, fewer candidates, steep competition, and serious retention challenges all lend to this problem. I recently spoke to Francesca Bossi, Chief Human Resource Officer at Docebo (https://www.docebo.com/). Docebo operates globally including in Europe, UK, US, and Canada. We discuss the situation as well as some ideas that might help.

What happens to employees’ unused paid time off (PTO)? It’s value for the employee is lost along with the benefits of them taking time to unwind and relax. Today’s guest has a unique anc compelling approach to unlocking the potential of unused PTO.

It’s my pleasure to have with me today Rob Whalen, Co-Founder and CEO of PTO Exchange (https://www.ptoexchange.com/), the first benefits platform that allows employees to self-direct the value of their unused paid time off (PTO) for other needs and causes. Given that there is a hiring shortage right now, wouldn’t it be crazy if someone were to suggest lowering wages as a solution? That’s exactly what Business Insider (https://rb.gy/uurfr5) is reporting about an executive at AFC Brands, which owns 67 Taco Bell and 50 Applebee’s restaurants in a leaked internal email. Among other things, he suggested high gas prices would force candidates to work for less.

I’m here to discuss this approach and related issues with Ira Wolfe (https://www.irawolfe.com/), an author, speaker, and President of Success Performance Solutions. He has been described as a “Millennial trapped in a Baby Boomer body” and “certified prophet” of workforce trends. He is indeed a visionary thinker and excellent guest.

When it comes to mental health in the workplace, many get timid around these kinds of challenges. When considering revealing mental health challenges, employees fear losing opportunities for growth and advancement and even their jobs. But when people face their challenges, see therapists and counselors, and enact strategies they are actively working on themselves. Employers need to start doing more than pointing employees towards an EAP, they need to recognize the strengths and abilities of all employees, including those with mental health challenges. Today guest is Eric Kussin, one-time Chief Revenue Officer for the Florida Panthers, and Founder of the excellent non-profit #SameHere Global (https://samehereglobal.org/).

I recently had the absolutely pleasure of interviewing the brilliant Dave Ulrich, Speaker, Author, Professor, and Thought Partner on Human Capability. In past interviews we’ve discussed what HR will look like in 5 years. Given the upheaval over the last few years, Dave and I instead focus on what he calls “discovering simplicity on the other side of complexity.” That is, developing a framework that can help employers and HR professionals, as well as employees get in the right mindset to deal with constant change, upheaval, and chaos.

In the episode Dave discusses a few of his recent LinkedIn posts, which can be seen here: • https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-can-business-hr-leaders-simplify-complexity-dave-ulrich/ • https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/seeking-certainty-uncertain-world-dave-ulrich/

In this episode we discuss: 1. Common pitfalls when organizations go global. 2. Supporting critical alignment of HR with corporate strategy. 3. Hello everyone, welcome back to Two Side HR Podcast. The simple goal of this podcast is to translate employee needs through HR to organizational leaders. In this episode we are going to explore the following:

• Are organizations ready for the churn of massive turnover that is happening now and will continue to occur for years to come? • Now is the time for HR to leverage their strategic knowledge and rise within their organizations. • Considerations surrounding not just perceived high-performers, but real high performers and the impact that turnover will have on them and that they will have on organizations going forward. • Existing problems facing women in the workplace were exacerbated and amplified by COVID-19; there is a lot of work to do to course-correct. • 3 steps to address and reverse these and related problems. • A discussion of the relationship between employee rights and workplace culture, and the role of HR in that relationship. • Making space for all employees when building and expanding diversity efforts.

Today’s guest is Berta Aldrich (https://www.bertaaldrich.com/), an award-winning executive leader celebrated for her accomplishments of educating and inspiring others to think big, breaks down barriers and perform at their highest potential.

Momentum is a very important topic in the world of employment and especially in HR. When an organization identifies an area for improvement and begins rolling out programs, they have to content with the momentum surrounding that issue within their workplace. If things are well, then the investment of energy from the new program might be fairly easy to apply. If things are not well, then the program might appear to do nothing at all, or maybe even make things worse. In that situation, it’s about redirecting or reversing that momentum, and that can be both challenging and highly effective.

I am very pleased to have with me today Kerry Unflat, Chief People Officer at Zipari (https://zipari.com/). Kerry is a brilliant HR strategist and a wellspring of well-managed optimism.

Employees are often referred to as the glue that holds an organization together. What, then, are managers? They certainly play a critical role, but when they are not positioned to succeed or properly trained, they can be party to a whole slew of issues within their organization. The poor habits of managers can lead to loss of employees, reductions in employee engagement, and real financial loss as well. Conversely, great managers that understand the goals and aspirations of their employees can drive great success in each of those areas.

Today I discuss this issue with HR analyst, author, and fellow podcaster, Ben Eubanks (https://upstarthr.com/about/). Ben is the Chief Research Officer at Lighthouse Research & Advisory. He helps companies and vendors with strategy, content, and more. He has worked as an influencer and analyst for more than 10 years, 7 of which he did in an independent capacity.

Welcome to my new, personal podcast called Two Sides HR. The goal of this podcast is to help HR translate the needs of the employee to the leaders of the organization. The divide between those two forces requires translation, and HR is in the ideal position to do so. I hope you all enjoy this episode.

Not to be an alarmist, but the return to the workplace represents a magnifier of existing mental health issues that need to be considered. At the same time, many organizations are dead set on returning their employees to their workplaces at least on a part-time or hybrid basis. In this episode I discuss some serious concerns that every employer should consider as they develop their return-to-work plan with security expert Ty Smith.

Ty is a highly decorated retired United States Navy SEAL with multiple deployments to the Middle East. After 20 years of faithful and honorable service in the U.S. Navy, Ty founded CommSafe AI (https://commsafe.ai/), a technology company that specializes in conflict and violence prevention. Ty completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Management from Ashford University and a Master of Business for Veterans degree from the University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business. Ty holds Board positions at Ashford University and the University of Arizona Global Campus. Ty is also a mentor at the San Diego State University Lavin Entrepreneurship Center and The Honor Foundation.

Thank you listeners for joining me. I am looking to release these episodes every other week on Wednesday on SoundCloud. I’ll post every episode on LinkedIn and Twitter as well. You can find links to both in the description. Finally, if you want to be considered for a guest on the show, please email me at twosides.hr@gmail.com
