Alright everybody--new month = new topic on the Brother Cousins Podcast Project. So, we've been running pretty theology-heavy around here, and decided to bring home some basics in a fresh way. The Christian faith starts in the heart and grows into actions. This month, we will look at 4 Christian disciplines with a view to implement them more fully into our walk with Jesus. They are: Study of Scripture, Prayer, Worship, and Fellowship.

In each episode we'll examine our "why" for the specific practice, offering some personal examples. Then we will move from the "why" to the "what" and "how" (based on our reasons, what will our practice be and how will we accomplish it?)

Today, we will start with Study. We hope you enjoy it.

This several-episodes-long deep-dive into the topics from the Area Wide Meeting have caused us all to re-examine our habits about what we are doing to help build relationships in the body of Christ. So, this week, Jared Wells guides us through a discussion of hospitality using 1 Peter 4:7-11 as a framework. This passage is helpful in defining hospitality, understanding why it's vital to the Christian community, and helping us get better at using it.

Also, we have a returning guest, Lee Adair. Lee is super-passionate about hospitality and he lends some great perspective too. Enjoy!

For this month, the Brother Cousins will revisit the speakers and topics from the 2022 Churches of Christ Area Wide Meeting. This year the theme was "Relationships: By This All Shall Know." The theme is taken from John 13:34-35 NKJV: "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

This episode we have Shawn Zybach talking about "Enduring Persecution". He also gives us some information about some of his work, see the links below!

Chase spend 35 solid minutes gut-punching the audience for everything we ever posted on Facebook (just kidding, but kinda not). But seriously, he made us stop and consider our communication (and specifically online communication) and what we use our voice to promote. We think you will enjoy a deeper and more nuanced take from Chase.

Key Study Verses:

Psalms 24:1-5 ESV A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, 2 for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. 3 Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. 5 He will receive blessing from the LORD and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Daniel 4:16-17 ESV Let his mind be changed from a man's, and let a beast's mind be given to him; and let seven periods of time pass over him. 17 The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, the decision by the word of the holy ones, to the end that the living may know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will and sets over it the lowliest of men.’

Proverbs 21:1 ESV The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will.

Habakkuk 3:17-18 ESV Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.

1 Peter 3:12-16 ESV For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” 13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

Colossians 1:12-14 ESV giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
