“Jesus himself drew near.” (Lk 24:15) God takes the initiative to Draw Near to you out of a deep and personal love for you. This movement asks each of us for a response. There are so many beautiful ways we can respond to the workings of Christ in our lives. Draw Near will discuss many personal, theological, and spiritual topics pertaining to Christ’s Church. Hosts: Fred Shellabarger and Kara Kardell Fred is a husband and father of 5. He is on fire for the Catholic faith and loves teaching his children about the love of God. He enjoys playing board games with his family and doing "fixer-upper" projects around the house. Kara is a wife and mother of 2. She was raised Catholic, but really FELL IN LOVE with the faith later in life. She loves fried-food and wine date nights with her husband and dance parties in the living room with her kids. Both have Master's degrees pertaining to the Catholic faith, BUT a degree does not a Saint make! We are all striving for holiness and sainthood no matter our education or life experience. St. Therese rings in our minds: "She was not, however, nourished by scholarly studies; nevertheless she had so much knowledge by herself that she knew how to show others the true way of salvation." -Benedict XV. We want to bring people to the heart of Christ through a deep movement of the heart ("heart": which requires knowledge of the faith in our intellect and a movement of the will towards He who is truth and goodness). Let's grow towards sainthood together!
We recently heard a question about us. Someone asked another friend, "why do THEY have a podcast?" Instead of assuming their intentions behind the question, we prayed with the question. "Why?" In this episode we share why 2 nobodies, sinners, introverts, friends... felt led to begin a podcast. What are we trying to accomplish? What is the future of Draw Near? We also wanted to welcome our hundreds of new listeners, share more of our lives with everyone and answer a couple of common questions we hear. Why Draw Near?: To grow in holiness together. Quite simply, we want to help others to encounter Christ; to grow in relationship with Him. But, we also want to help others encounter Christ in one another, and grow in relationship with each other. We want to shine the light of Christ so that even when we stumble through the darkness, we do this together following after Christ; that we may be light to one another, encourage one another, and build each other up. Having a spiritual director can be “trendy.” Nevertheless, there is great value in spiritual direction! We often need help in making decisions for ourselves in the light of faith and going deeper in our spiritual lives; in hearing the voice of the Lord and being accountable for what is or is not happening in prayer. Pope Benedict XVI said, “The world promises you comfort. But you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.” Yet Jesus tells us in John 16:33 that we can expect tribulation and suffering in this world if we seek to follow Him. How are they both right? What does this mean for us? How are we to live these truths? What role do “comforts” play in our lives? How might they hinder our walk with the Lord? What value is there in trials and tribulation? Jesus tells us in John 17:14 that we can expect trials. But he also says that we should not be afraid, for he has “overcome the world.” What does this mean for us? If you think you are good at Lent… You are not. No one is good at Lent. But there is a good reason for this. Lent is often a challenge because it requires letting go of things that hinder us in following the Lord. It requires taking up the cross and denying ourselves for something much greater and more beautiful: a deeper encounter with the love and person of Jesus Christ. This helps us to begin to think more like Christ, to live more like Christ, to love more like Christ. But how do we do this? The Church teaches that parents are the primary evangelists and teachers of their children and goes so far as to refer to the family in the home as “the domestic church.” But what does this mean? Practically, how do we live this out? The Church also places a great emphasis on the role adults play in helping children encounter the love of Christ. In many ways, the Christ children know, the love of God they experience, is that which we model for them. In this episode we share some experiences from our own families on how we share the love of Christ in our homes and how we strive to be witnesses and hand on the faith. Whether single or unmarried, parents, aunts, uncles, or just someone who works with children, we believe our discussion can benefit anyone who wants to help the little ones in their lives come to know the love of Christ. Some of the tips we discuss: * Living as a witness: demonstrate the life of prayer and devotion and invite them into that experience. Be authentic: sometimes the life of faith can be challenging. Its okay to talk about that. Apologize and seek forgiveness when its needed. Demonstrate God’s mercy and the need to both extend and seek forgiveness. Use every moment as a teaching moment. Recognize the great faith children have. Allow God to teach you through them and draw near to the Lord. Give the reading of Scripture a pride of place in your home. This is how we come to know the Lord most profoundly, in Sacred Scripture. Help to form older children to become examples to, and in their own way, teachers of their younger sibling. Embrace the liturgical calendar and incorporate significant dates into the rhythm of family life. Create a sacred space in your home for prayer and devotion. Teach you kids how to pray! Who is the Holy Spirit? Why is a relationship with Him so important? In Scripture, Christ promises the gift of the Holy Spirit, the love of God poured out into our hearts (Rom 5:5). He is Comforter, Teacher, Counselor and Guide. In Acts 15, when the Church is faced with a difficult decision, they seek Him in prayer, trusting in Christ’s promise that the Holy Spirit will lead and guide in all truth. There we hear the phrase, “It seemed good to us and the Holy Spirit.” How can we come to a place where we also can say this about our decisions and our daily lives? How can we learn to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit? How can we experience his promptings in our daily lives? What does this have to do with the love of God? And how has God gifted you in the power and grace of the Holy Spirit to renew the face of the earth? We will discuss all these things in this episode! We mention the “Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit” in this episode. These are commonly emphasized in preparation for Confirmation. We love how the Baltimore Catechism describes these gifts: "The gifts of the Holy Spirit enable us to catch the breath of the Holy Spirit, moving the ship of our soul much faster and farther than we could ever sail it by using the virtues ourselves. For example, we can use the virtue of faith by making an act of faith. But to use this virtue constantly, being aware of God's presence in us and about us at all times, is more than we can do ourselves unless the Holy Spirit does it in us. Likewise, we can make an act of love. But to love our enemies for God's sake and to be willing to die for them, we need the help of the Holy Spirit. THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, WHICH OUR SHIP CATCHES BY UNFOLDING THE SAILS OF THE GIFTS, ENABLES US TO DO EVEN THINGS THAT ARE HUMANLY IMPOSSIBLE. IT IS THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE SOULS OF THE SAINTS THAT EXPLAIN THE SEEMINGLY IMPOSSIBLE THINGS IN THEIR LIVES" (our emphasis added). These seven gifts are largely aimed at our own growth in holiness: • Wisdom helps us to see the world through the lens of God’s truth. • Understanding is the ability to grasp the truths of our faith. • Knowledge helps you to understand the meaning and purpose God has for you and to actually live up this meaning. • Counsel is also known as “right judgement.” It is the ability to follow God’s plan in our choices and decisions. • Fortitude is also known as “courage.” It is the gift to stand up for what is true and right. • Piety helps us worship God with true devotion and love. • Fear of the Lord aids someone to have wonder and awe at God. For such a long time, I (Kara) thought the Immaculate Conception was all about Jesus. After all… he was miraculously conceived! BUT this Feast, which we celebrate today on December 8th, is All. About. MARY! Mary was immaculately conceived in the womb of her mother. She was created without the stain of Original Sin. No doubt we have all wrestled with discouragement. Thoughts of our own failures and shortcomings, whether real or only perceived, can often surround us like a heavy storm. St. Francis of Assisi, in hearing God say "rebuild my Church," began rebuilding himself in holiness... the people are the Church! The people are called to be rebuilt. St. Francis gave up worldly greatness to be great in the eyes of the Lord. He gave his whole self to God.
In this episode we discuss how the pursuit of holiness begins with our conversion; the loving, humble, response we make to God who has demonstrated his great love for us on the Cross. We also discuss how we live out this call to holiness in the face of many obstacles that work against us. Regardless of any circumstances, growth in holiness and perfection is a pursuit aimed towards heaven but a pursuit that will never end this side of heaven.

If we are trying to love and serve the Lord, and interested in growing in holiness, we always want to make sure to make decisions according to the will of God. However, it is not always easy for us to make decisions. We can be tempted to become anxious and fearful when faced with making an important decision. In this episode Kara and Fred share some thoughts from the treasury of the Church’s teaching as well as their own experience in striving to follow the will of God in their own lives.
