Introducing the 125 Roller Coaster Challenge - Trimmed & Stapled Podcast

We know what you are thinking, ”Great another podcast about roller coaster top ten lists and ride debates”. Well yes, sort of...

While Trimmed & Stapled will include our thoughts and opinions on the best hyper coasters we have ridden, which Disney parks has the best theming, and which wooden coaster needs to become the next RMC hybrid, we would also like to take a different approach.

Each week we will spend about a half hour discussing our journey while we try to ride 125 new credits a season. So along with our lists we want to share our experiences, tell you why we choose to visit a particular park, why we did the coasters in a particular order and our journey from being GP to actually proudly calling ourselves enthusiasts.

125 Roller Coaster Challenge started out as a family adventure and each week we want to share that with you because when it is all said and done, the best memories come from the people who shared the ride.

Well we finally got to our 399th coaster last week so now it's time to start thinking about which coaster should get the honor of number 400. Milestone coasters have to be something special with our 100th being The Beast / 200th being the Coney Island Cyclone and our 300th being the amazing hyper coaster Mako.

As summer started to wind down, we still had to get to Kennywood's water park - Sandcastle Water Park so we headed down to film this Pittsburgh staple.

This season we are all about visiting and filming new parks and earlier this year we added DelGrosso to our roster, now we did the same for Dutch Wonderland. If you are going by distance, Dutch Wonderland is our second closes park (we did a google maps and it is 30 miles with Hersheypark is 27) but we never got to visit it cause it really isn't for our age group.

This season we made the decision to get the pass and here is how our day went.

Six Flags America is closing in November, 2025. There is nothing we can do to change that fact so it's time to visit and enjoy the park one last season.

As our journey continues in the 2018 season, we had a few local park visits between our Sesame Place trip and our journey out west but we did pick up a few left over coaster credits along the way. Dorney Park, Knoebels, Great Adventure and Kentucky Kingdom has a coaster each that we missed in 2017 when we visited but in this episode we give these "Forgotten Four" a little love.

Come On, you know the lyric, I'm sure you are probably singing them to yourself as you read this. Yep, we finally got to our actual home Sea World Park (yes, we claim it is Busch Garden's Williamsburg but the miles don't lie), Sesame Place in Langhorne, PA.

This episode takes you back to our journey on our second year of the 125 Roller Coaster Challenge and how we got to ride the new for 2018 roller coasters, Oscar's Wacky Taxi.

We discuss our day at this park along with a full park walk through so if you ever wanted to visit this iconic Philly area park, sit back and enjoy this episode.

Our 2023 season of visiting 50 amusement park as Paul turns 50 is well underway (oh and riding 125 new roller coasters) so thanks for being part of the journey

We are back with the second part of which amusement park we are looking to visit in 2023. As Paul hits the 50 milestone, his goal is to visit 50 parks in one year and this episode continues where episode 108 ended with the next 25 parks on the target list.

Some are local, some are parts of planned trips and even some are crazy day trips but all in all, listen to this episode to see where the 125 Roller Coaster gang will be next year (and will be filming for the YouTube channel).

It's Thanksgiving and we know a lot of our listeners are on the road traveling to get some turkey for the holidays so we decided to throw together a cool ERT episode giving everyone a sneak peek into our 2023 plans.

In June of 2023 Paul is turning 50 so what better way to celebrate the entire year than to visit 50 different amusement parks. Some will be new, some will be local, and some might be a pipe dream but all in all in this episode we will be discussing 25 of the 50 that are on the agenda for the new year.

We are already six episodes into season three and we finally got to our first new amusement park to discuss. Well, is it really an amusement park or is it a family fun center? This is for you to decide as we discuss our trip to Adventure Park, USA in Maryland.

Now a family fun center has a lot to offer children, teens, and adults alike and have become pretty standard. Whether you like Laser Tag, Rock Walls, Arcades and even Rope Courses, family fun centers have all that and some great pizza to boot. So what makes Adventure Park USA different is the fact that they have all of that AND an entire outdoor section with three roller coaster credits. Now we got your attention!!

Once you step outside you have two adult coasters and a kiddie coaster, Scrambler, Tilt-A-Whirl, a carousel and even some gem mining like a lot of smaller amusement parks. Are you starting to see our point, this is either a small amusement park or the greatest family fun center in the world. No matter what you think, this park is a must visit for everyone. You can buy a pass or just get the tickets to ride the attractions you want.

50 parks at 50 is kicking off in 2023.

As you know we kicked off our 2nd year doing our 125 Roller Coaster Challenge riding Twisted Timbers at their media day so we figured, maybe we can be one of the first riders on Cedar Point's newest roller coaster, Steel Vengeance. We found out that Lebron James was holding a first rider benefit and we got our butts down to Cedar Point to attend.

This episode tell you about that event along with our thoughts on one of the top ten roller coasters in the world (yes we are serious, this is a must ride for anyone who loves roller coasters). So why is this episode called Steve? Think about it, look at the name and think about it.

2022 is winding down but coming soon we will be sharing our 50 amusement park we will be visiting (and filming) for 2023.

Season 3 is in full swing and in this episode we are revisiting Six Flags America while discussing the Six Flags chain (where is was, where it was going, and where it is now).

Six Flags America is a park on the Maryland side of DC and it does not get the love it deserves. We went back to get a coaster credit we missed in our first year (yes a kiddie coaster but our 2nd and 3rd year of the 125 were very shameful on our coaster counts) but we discuss what has changed over the years at this under appreciated park.

The second half of the episode discusses what is going on with the Six Flags chain as a whole, our thoughts and what we see for the future of this large amusement park chain. We would love to get your feedback so make sure you leave comments for us to respond too.

Season Three kicks off with our first event in 2018 which was the Media Day event for King Dominion's newest roller coaster, Twisted Timbers.

That's correct, we somehow got invited to spend a March Day at King's Dominion and become one of the first riders of this amazing RMC coaster (currently our favorite coaster for 2021).

Now did we get permission because we are famous podcasters? well no. Was it because we had 10k followers on Facebook? Sure... Was it because we had a Make A Wish credit? not ever close. We got to attend this media event because we were and still are members of ACE (money well spent).

So we kick off the season discussing the event, this amazing coaster, and much more.

While the stats are all the same, not all boomerangs are created equal.

Our 2017 amusement park season finally ended with one more ride at our home park (Hersheypark) we a quick ride on Cocoa Cruiser as credit 131. When we finished we reflected on some other roller coasters we had the opportunity to ride together before the adventure and they included rides from Hersheypark, Knoebels, Kings Dominion, Cedar Point and even Dutch Wonderland. This episode will also discuss those coaster credit which left our first year coaster count at 140.

As August starts to fade into autumn and the amusement park summer season comes to a close, it's that time of year where the amusement parks start to announce their 2023 attractions. This ERT episode will focus on the announcements from the Cedar Fair chain. If you are not familiar with Cedar Fair, they own 11 different amusement parks in the US which include : Cedar Point, Valley Fair, Dorney Park, Knotts Berry Farm, Carowinds, Kings Dominion, Kings Island, Michigan's Adventure, Worlds of Fun, Canada's Wonderland, and California Great America. While not all of these parks will be getting new attractions, we will be discussing all of them along with the new Season Pass options that some of the parks are also receiving.

Cedar Fair is an amazing chain and even though this won't be the greatest year in their history, the attractions coming are exciting.

As our second season comes to a close, there was one more park we visited after our Morey's Piers adventure and that was Playland's Castaway Cove in Ocean City, NJ. Even though we visited this pier that has four coasters on it, we only rode one, the new for 2017 S&S coaster called GaleForce. This short episode discusses the park and how this new attraction was riding it's first year (not perfectly).

2017 was a huge year for us kicking off our 125 Roller Coaster Challenge and we ended our adventure at this seaside amusement pier.

As we finish up our second season the past month had one thing in common, the Jersey Shore so in this ERT Paul & Janine (yes she is still alive) discuss the amusement piers they have visited and of course rank them.

It has finally arrived. Yes this episode was promised almost two months ago but after a lot of research and so many different scripts, we have finally got you the Doo Wop episode which is a brief history of not just Morey's Piers, but the amusement piers of Wildwood, NJ. Why are we putting it that way?

While Morey's Piers is what we currently have on the Wildwood Boardwalk, in the late 70's and 80's (i.e. when Paul was a kid), there were six piers operating and in this episode we will be discussing the "lost piers". Who remembers Hunt's Pier (also known as the NEW Hunts Pier, Conko's Party Pier, and finally Dinosaur Beach). How about the Hellhole and Meteor from Sportland Pier? How about the Nickel's Midway Pier with it's Dracula's Castle and two roller coasters.

The more we dug into the history, the more we learned and remembered, even digging through old photos to prove that there were some lost credits in the past.

Our 2022 coaster season is in full swing and with it being the beginning of the month, it's time to let you know how our July came out and what our goals are for August as our summer starts to wind down. Paul was all over the Northeast this past month with stops at Six Flags Darien Lake, Niagara Amusement Park (actually mostly their Splash World), Land of Make Believe, Casino Pier, Dorney Park, Hersheypark, Jenkinson's Boardwalk and Storybook Land. So many new parks (and coaster credits were had).

As we finish season two we are already looking ahead to some new ideas for season three and one of them is the "Revisited" monthly segment where we go back to parks we did when we started the 125 Roller Coaster Challenge five years ago and see what has changed. While we were going to kick this off in September, Paul had his birthday where he went back to our home park of Hersheypark and rode all 13 coasters so it just made sense to do this episode now.

So what has changed in the past five years, well when it comes to Hersheypark, a lot is an understatement. Whether it is turning Reese Cup Challenge into Cupfusion, adding a water coaster to the Boardwalk, and even adding a 200ft B&M coaster while making a Vekoma Boomerang into a pretty fun experience, this park has done a lot. On top of that, Paul will be discussing all the coasters and which have gotten better (looking at you Sooper Dooper Looper) and which need to simply go (you know who we mean, we don't have to say it out loud).

We have been huge fans of these guys since we first watched their videos as we planned our first trips and even today when we want to check out a new park, learn about a new zoo, or even figure out what a cruise is all about. While all of the guys at In The Loop are fantastic, we love when Legend and Molly are showing us new merch, where the places are for the best drinks, and how to get all of our credits quickly.

Yes, it took 84 episodes but we finally got to our 125th roller coaster and it was at the amazing Morey's Piers in Wildwood, NJ. While we won't tell you in the description which coaster got that honor, we will tell you which coasters we rode that day and will let you know we did a Facebook poll and they picked the winner that day. Also the park was simply amazing and made us feel like VIP's that day with ride passes, exclusive ride on our 125th coaster and even a history book which will come in handy for our third episode we are doing in two weeks about the history of these piers.

So which ride will it be?

Flitzer which is now defunct

How about the original boomerang Sea Serpent (it isn't a clone if you are the first)

Great White which was the last CCI coaster ever built

Doo Wooper because who doesn't love a mouse themed to a 1960's hamburger stand

Fly the Great Noreaster which is the best SLC ever built (mainly because it was rebuilt)

or Rollies Coaster simply because it is a cool name.

Shout out to Austin and his fiance who we met at Six Flags New England last weekend. We can't wait to meet more of you guys in the queue in 2022.

When we were starting our journey in 2017 we watched a lot of YouTube channels to get an idea of what we were getting ourselves into and on the top of that list was Airtime Thrills. We have always loved his rankings, his knowledge, and of course his passion for amusement parks and roller coasters. So when we reached out to him about our little podcast and he agreed to sit down with us and do this episode, we were beyond, well thrilled.

Our first year of the 125 Roller Coaster was about one thing, getting to 125. While we have made a few mistakes in our first year (you will hear the big one soon) we have a few regrets also and one of them is we did a few hit and runs in 2017. What is a hit and run? We would run into a park (usually one of the smaller ones) and get the credit and go. We did that with Waldameer, we did it with Conneaut Lake Park, and we did it with the subject of this episode, Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury CT.

We ran into this park because we knew this was the day we were going to get our 125th roller coaster credit at another park so we came and went within an hour to grab Wooden Warrior at 121. We have since learned a lesson from doing this which is you have to come and enjoy these smaller parks because they truly are hidden gems. So in this episode we will be talking about some of the history of Quassy, we will talk about Wooden Warrior and do a walk through of this historic park.

But as a bonus we will also be discussing our YouTube channel and what type of videos we are focusing on and we will finally let you know our thoughts on Relief Band. Yes, we have finally given this device a decent test and we are not going to hold back. If you get motion sickness like Paul, this is a must listen too.

Yes, we are a bit late (okay, about two weeks late) on getting this ERT out but we now know how important Paul is to the process. Yep, he got the flu and it messed up the entire process. The good news is that he is back and he finally got this ERT edited and ready to go.

The 125 Roller Coaster Challenge is based in the mid atlantic and because of that, their coaster season usually does not launch til April but this year was an exception. Trips to Busch Gardens Tampa, Sea World Orlando, Universal Studios - Islands of Adventure and even Busch Gardens Williamsburg have already occurred and because of that, Paul got to ride three to the newest and most anticipated coasters of the year. Yes, Paul in a three week span got to ride VelociCoaster, Pantheon, and Iron Gwazi and in this episode, he will review them and give you the correct (yes correct) order for these amazing coasters.

When our listeners have a suggestion or a really cool idea, we love it and will make sure we cover it. A month ago we had a suggestion from an anonymous listener on the Audible platform (we actually didn't know we were on it) who asked us our thoughts on the next RMC conversion which is a fantastic subject so here you go. Which current roller coasters do we think RMC should turn into the newest Twisted Timbers, Steel Vengeance, and of course Iron Gwazi?

While you have to listen to the episode to hear the coasters, here are the parks that get mentioned : Morey's Piers, Indiana Beach, Hersheypark, Mt Olympus, Silverwood, Universal Orlando, Dutch Wonderland, and numerous Cedar Fair, Sea World and Six Flags parks.

Now that all the Top Coaster lists are done it's time to get back to our journey to 125 different roller coasters and we ended our first ever western road trip at Waldameer in Erie, PA. This park is special not only because it is the 10th oldest operating amusement park in the United States, but because this small park proves that a regional / neighborhood park can survive in today's mega corporate world.

Nestled along the Lake Erie coast, this park had a beauty all of it's own. This episode will discuss the history, flat rides, food, their amazing water park (Water World) and of course the coasters. While we are only creating one episode for Waldameer, we hope that after listening to this one you are ready to check it out in 2022.

Yes, we know it's not the first of the month but with our second part of "Simply The Best" schedule for that date (discussing our top 25 roller coasters) we figured we would knock out our Q episode a bit early. What's a Q? If you are new to our podcast, this is where we discuss what we did the past month and what we plan on doing in the upcoming month. The wait is over, time for us to unveil our top 50 roller coaster for 2021. This episode discusses our 50th to 26th coasters and to say there was some debate between Paul & Janine is the understatement of the day. What started out with a lot of agreement shifting into head shakes and groans by the time our 35th coaster was discussed.

It's that time of the year again, time for the 125 Roller Coaster Challenge worst 25 roller coasters we have ridden. These coasters are so bad that most of them actually hurt.

It's the most wonderful time of the year. No seriously, it's time for the 125 Roller Coaster Ranking for 2021 and today's ERT is kicking it off with a discussion of the coaster styles we have already discussed in our second season.

So far we have talked about the floorless, inverted, classic wooden coasters, launched, looping and hyper coasters we have ridden but for this episode, we are going to rank each one of these coasters as they compare to each other for 2021. King's Island month comes to an end but not without a special episode not only explaining why Kings Island is Paul's favorite amusement park so far, but actually sharing his top ten amusement parks and why each one is ahead of the other. Our second part of our Kentucky Kingdom adventure goes through a walk-through of this amazing little park focusing on the flats, food, and their fantastic water park, Hurricane Bay.

Yes, looking at their map, this park can be a bit confusing (we got pretty lost the first time) but hopefully after this episode, you can find the kiddie section (King Louie's Playland), figure out how to get on Kentucky Flyer, and of course sit down with your favorite drink and unwind (we recommend the Hurricane Bay Beach Club Bar).

As we come to the end of season one of our podcast, we have one more park to highlight - Conneaut Lake Park (now known as the "NEW Conneaut Lake Park) outside of Meadville, PA. This park has a history (it was founded in 1892) and we give an overview of that history, discuss our visit there in 2017, and will dive into what is happening currently and give our thoughts on it's future.

We also discuss the last Dorney Park credit we needed (Stinger) and what we thought of this unique coaster which was taken out later that year.

The 125 Roller Coaster Challenge - Trimmed & Stapled Podcast is BACK!!!

We are so sorry for disappearing for about two months but we are back and we are excited for this episode. Since we last had a podcast we visited 10 parks with four being completely new.

As the 2021 season kicks off, why not discuss our favorite coasters so far?

Paul is flying solo today and will be discussing his Top 50 Roller Coaster so far. While many people rank coasters by their height, speed, and hype, every one of these coasters has one thing in common, an amazing ride experience.

The ride location in the park, a particular signature element that is unique to that coaster, or even a personal moment that makes this ride stand out from the crowd. There are so many factors as to why a coaster makes this list and Paul goes into great detail discussing not just the coaster, but all the factors as to why it makes the our Top 50.

It's Dorney Park Week!!! (which is five more days than Cedar Fair gives this park a year).

Paul and Janine discuss their home Cedar Fair park and try to figure out why it just doesn't get the love it deserves.
