Gratitude is so much more than just saying “Thank You.” It’s about the attitude, mindset, and practice of not only looking for the things we are thankful for, but taking the time to slow down, acknowledge what is good, and to find the good in what might appear to be not so good. A multitude of studies show that gratitude is essential for both physical and mental health.
In this short holiday episode, Kathryn is going to share some of what she has learned in her five decades, and how we as writers can specifically apply that knowledge to improve our productivity and creativity. Although we are thinking of Thanksgiving here in the US this week, an attitude of Gratitude is imperative to our daily lives all year long, wherever you live.

Authors often cite “creative freedom” and “increased control” when asked why they choose to self-publish. But then they often don’t realize there are other options besides Kindle Direct Publishing, don’t know how to access those options, or they simply get cold feet when it comes to publishing wide.
If this describes you, then this episode is here to help. One of the best parts of publishing wide is being able to reach the largest possible international audience with your books.
Kathryn connected with her friend, Clarissa Gosling, to discuss the whys and wherefores of publishing wide.
About Our Guest:Clarissa Gosling has always lived more in the world of daydream and fiction than in reality. In her writing she explores purpose and belonging across worlds. Having never found an actual portal to fairyland, she creates her own fantastical worlds where dragons, fae and other magical creatures rule. She now lives in the Netherlands with her family, where she writes as much as they will let her.
Clarissa is the author of theDragons of Kaitstud' and Lost Princess of StarlightYA fantasy series, and theExpat Lifeseries of non-fiction guides for families moving, and living, abroad. Ever feel overwhelmed in the writing community and lost in a sea of social media accounts? If you aren’t getting the results you need, it's time for a new strategy. According to Forbes magazine, "Niching Down" can make a big difference.
In today’s episode, Kathryn talks with Sarah Gamez about networking within your genre, collaborating with other authors, and building your ideal audience. By day, Sarah works in marketing for a gaming company, but after hours she is a romance author, filmmaker, and host of the Romancing the Story podcast.
About Our Guest:Sarah Gamez may live in Texas, but her head has always been in the clouds. Even now, you could often find her daydreaming all sorts of fun characters and strange ideas - mostly the kissing kind. Her ever expanding passion for writing detailed plots along with a limited attention span has resulted in taking far too long to complete a novel, but she is working to remedy that!
As a romantic optimist, she created a writing-geared podcast where she talks to other writers about their expertise and journeys. By day, she works in the video game industry and by night, she's writing, podcasting, or hanging out with her husband and two doggos.

Episode Summary/Introduction:In order to figure out where we are going, it always helps to know where we have been. As working writers are adjusting to algorithms and A.I, Kathryn called on one of her favorite professors, and went back to class to get her questions answered. Hugh Burns was one of the pioneers who literally wrote the book, and the code, 45 years ago.
Hugh Burns’ dissertation (PhD in Rhetoric, University of Texas) broke ground when he combined composition instruction with artificial intelligence research. His work created a program that led to the award-winning education platform Daedalus Integrated Writing Environment (DIWE).
In this episode, Kathryn discusses the history, current applications, and future of artificial intelligence as it applies to writers with Dr. Hugh Burns.
About Our Guest:Hugh Burns, Professor Emeritus, Texas Woman’s University, is best known for his career of encouraging writers across all disciplines, pioneering exploratory research in rhetoric and technology.
A retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, he served the majority of his military career investigating how artificial intelligence may improve education and training. He’s taught writing and digital humanities courses at The University of Texas at Austin, Smith College, Texas Woman's University, and the Air Force Academy. He has served as a Fulbright Senior Specialist in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a Visiting Scholar of Digital Media and Composition at The Ohio State University, and as Chairman of the Board of the Daedalus Group.
Since 1990, the Hugh Burns Dissertation Award has been given annually to the best dissertation in the field of computers and composition. In 2011, he was appointed as the Holland H. Coors Endowed Chair at the Air Force Academy.
He and his wife, Mary, live in Colorado Springs; they have three daughters, seven grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.
