Welcome to Doorward Thinking, the show where we challenge the ways we all think about life and work.
We’re all friends working in a Social Real Estate startup, and we know sometimes it’s tough to manage everything life throws our way. At one time or another, we’ve all felt that if we could take the leap to build something of our own, we could have better lives and contribute something of value to the world. That’s why we started Doorward.
But this isn’t a show about real estate technology. It’s a show about what we value - stepping back and reframing our situations, embracing our freedom, taking a leap, and remembering what matters - things we know everybody wants to do. Our hope is to contribute something, big or small, to your thoughts about how we can all live our best lives.
As we search for truth in our own lives, we'll cover a variety of topics and share very candid and real conversations getting to the heart of our humanity. We’ll even have some special guests join us for some extra insight.
Open a new door each week with our host Nate LeBlanc, as well as regular contributors Daniel Jakubisin, Stephen Aydt, Peter Costanzo and Matthew Klem, for your weekly dose of candor, laughs, and contemplation.
In today's age where almost everything posted on social media appears to be near-perfect, people crave authenticity. This is why marketing strategy like user-generated content (UGC) is becoming one of the most influential forms of marketing. Having customers with genuine trust in your company sets the organization in the right direction long term.
In this episode, Nate and Jake sit down with Kate and Azeem of Greenly Mortgage to share how they achieved business success amidst tight competition. They reiterate the importance of open and honest communication as an essential way to improve relationships not only with the customers but within the organization. Azeem also talks about how they promote transparency in the workplace by engaging the team in decision-making, welcoming new ideas through clear communication, and being open with their clients. The company stands on the principle that earning trust is a collective effort that leaders and team members must always strive for.
Key Takeaways
The Things1. Think about when you have been involved in successful small teams. What made them successful? 2. How can you make your work/process more transparent for your customers and coworkers? For your loved ones? 3. How can you promote transparency so the people you work for and with can see you can be trusted?
Key Quotes“If you want to continue to be ahead of everybody, you have to be incorporating new ideas. In order to incorporate new ideas, you've got to be open to them, and acknowledge that they exist.” - Kate Glassman
“Don't be afraid to be transparent with your borrowers, they're actually going to respect you for it. In the end, even though it's uncomfortable, even though you're going to be presenting a loan estimate to them, they might have a competing loan estimate from another big bank, that looks a lot more favorable. I'm going to equip you so that you can explain to them how this is a trustworthy loan estimate and how this one isn't.” - Kate Glassman
“You never really know what someone could become.” - Azeem Moazzamuddin
“I think having that vision and having that goal and setting those meetings with your team members and having that one-on-ones, and being able to also make hard decisions for the betterment of the group is the biggest thing for culture.” - Azeem Moazzamuddin

Trust is the powerful force underlying business success, not effort or money.
It is something you build without thinking about; it is the outcome of daily interactions and interactions with people you work with. It touches every area of business, from business partners, and employees, to customers. It is a core element of human relationships.
Nate is joined by Doorward Founder Daniel Jakubisin and Co-Founder Peter Costanzo to talk about business trust and its importance in driving business success.
The trio takes a look at the power of trust in building relationships, and the societal importance of social media today. They share vibrant and compelling insights on how to start building trust in the business and workplace. They also deeply examine the Trust Equation and how it is vital in improving organizations' and individuals' lives by increasing trustworthiness.
Key Takeaways* Lessons from the recent Twitter blue check mark fiasco * A proven strategy to build up your reputation and trust on social media * The Trust Equation: Credibility, Reliability and Intimacy * The problem with skepticism on social media platforms
A Reflection on Trust1. Which areas of the trust equations are your strengths? How about your weaknesses? 2. There are a lot of transactions we undertake in business. Are your transactions with others based on convenience or trust? How can you engage in more trusted transactions? 3. Who are your most trusted friends and family members? Why do you trust them and how can you exhibit those qualities?
Key Quotes “Trust is built by fulfilling the city's value proposition.” - Boston Consulting Group
“He who does not trust enough, Will not be trusted.” - Lao Tzu
*“The best way to find out you can actually trust somebody is to trust them.” - Ernest Hemingway
“Genuinely helping someone is a good way to quickly establish some trust. And even if you don't succeed, but you put forth the maximum effort that you need to do everything that you can, within reason, it's a good way to start helping people trust in other people.' - Peter Costanzo
“I want to encourage everybody listening to adapt the abundance mindset. Think about what you can do to help the person to your left or to your right.” - Peter Costanzo “Trust based on pure actions and intentions fuels a positive feed-forward cycle.” - Nate LeBlanc*

Nate and the team discuss the book "Start With Why" by New York Times bestselling author Simon Sinek. During the discussion, they pause to reflect on how Sinek's assertions in the book are present in the world of business and in their own startup.
Nate is joined by pediatric Occupational Therapist Mikayla Stupps to talk about the need for approaching life with creativity. We discuss her work with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and how a free-flowing, creative approach helps these children make large strides. Mikayla remarks further about how learning to be creative has helped her live her dreams and is helping her business flourish.
A tragedy prompts Nate to reevaluate what the podcast is all about and to rediscover his reasons for his work.
Our production schedule got a bit out of whack due to an illness, but that doesn't keep us from producing content. Nate takes some time to get personal about what's impacted him on his journey as well as revisit the SMART goal framework. We'll be back on track next week, but in the meantime, enjoy today's Bonus!
Welcome back to a brand new season of Doorward Thinking! We have several new features to share, like a book club and new ways to interact with the team, so stay tuned till the end to hear all the details. Today's episode is all about resolutions and goal setting. The team talks about why we need goals, how to be successful, and what to do when you fall a little bit short.
In this episode the team completes laying the discussion for everything that is to come with a discussion on the true meaning of self care and how it can better not only our own lives but the lives of others. In addition, the Japanese concept of "Ikigai" - our reason for living - is examined, as well as an assertion on where happiness lies.
In this fast-paced episode the team discusses the maxim "Know Thyself" and delves into the process before endorsing a two pronged approach. We further analyze a critique of those who say knowing ourselves is a detriment to the human experience, and give thoughts into the role of technology in knowing who we are.
Join Nate and Dan as they welcome Doorward Thinking's first guest, friend of the show Nick Eberhardt. Nick shares his thoughts about the accommodations we make in life and the work place. The trio also takes time to discuss the phenomenon of conformity and the importance of thinking critically in deciding when to go against the grain.
The team gathers together after their Thanksgiving meal to talk about the history of the Thanksgiving holiday, give their thoughts on gratitude, and share what they are thankful for this year.
The team continues last week's discussion from episode 3, "Disrupting the Work/Life Balance" by investigating how clear boundaries can allow us to be intentional and engaged throughout the day. Recent "Right to Rest" legislation is discussed and two listeners of the show share their experiences working from home.
After some shenanigans, the team critiques the concept of work/life balance. They discuss the change in work/life boundaries from the earliest days of work to our more modern day office culture, and the blurring of work/life boundaries with so many workers returning home. An alternative to work/life balance is questioned. Finally, they assert that in the quest for some sort of equilibrium the choice is a personal one, and encourage people to prioritize what they find most important.
Over thousands of years, the way we have thought about work has changed with innovations in technology and thought. After a brief history of humanity's thoughts on work, the team discusses what work brings to our lives with this modern understanding paying particular attention to the dignity of the worker, workplace relationships, and the value work can bring to others.
