This is the story of the Niedermayer–Hentig Expedition, also known as the Kabul Mission, in which Germany sent a covert expedition all the way to Afghanistan during World War I to convince the ruling Muslim emir to launch a jihad against British India.

In the 1850s, Gibson sets out on a quest for power and adventure that takes him eventually to the Dutch East Indies, where he tries to incite an insurrection.
