Today's episode features some of the greatest sax players in jazz. It's a small sample given the time allotted, but I hope I can introduce listeners to some of the greatest! Tina Brook's great recordings for Blue Note Records, the unforgettable sounds of Dexter Gordon, and John Coltrane's great version of Countdown are just a few of the gems featured today.

Shadowfax was considered a new age group but there music is much more than that. Several tracks from their early recordings are featured in today's episode. Pop singer Joe Jackson released an album many years ago that swings like crazy. The last part of the show features several tracks that are guaranteed to get you dancing!😀

On today's episode, many jazz musicians are featured that I featured often over the years. One band in particular is Weather Report. Man With The Copper Fingers is part of a mini set I put together featuring songs that deal with fingers. Other mini sets include songs that deal with paint, shoes and glass. Lots of fun today but we must never forget the great artists featured. Always something to discover!😀

This episode begins with some tracks featuring songs that contain apples and oranges.Jazz Fusion pioneer, Jan Hammer gets things going with his unique way of playing. He was a big part of the jazz fusion movement back in the 1970's. I had a chance to see him live at the old El Casino in Montreal years ago. One of a kind for sure. The great blues singer Bessie Smith is featured with her classic rendition of Careless Love. She influenced so many singers including the timeless Janis Joplin. I just had to feature Eric Dolphy in this episode. The urge was too great. Bee Vamp was one of his most well known pieces. All in all a solid two hours of great jazz.

One of the most under rated bassists in jazz is featured on today's episode. Recordings Jamaladeen made for the Gramavision label from the 1980s are featured. Fusion band UZEB are also in the spotlight. This always interesting band from Quebec Canada never disappoint. Comments and jazz requests are always welcome!

One of the most lyrical and dependable pianists in jazz Red Garland welcomes us to another addition of In Transition. Long admired by trumpet great Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and many others as a pianist of note (no pun intended), Red's careful selection of notes is always evident in his playing. Hailing from the province of Quebec, Canada and former member of the band UZEB, Alain always delivers with solid bass playing, great songs and superb playing with whoever he plays with. Trumpet player Johnny Coles who at one time performed with bassist Charles Mingus is also featured,. You may be surprised by his phrasing and attention to detail. A long underrated musician with a beautiful tone.

Ethel Ennis is a new discover for me. First time listen felt like a shower of warm water. Her phrasing, choice of music and overall delivery demand repeated listens. My first impression was that style wise she reminded me of another great vocalist, Chris Connor. Canadian vocalist Alex Pangman always delivers a great vocal. The songs on this episode are fun to listen to thanks to the whimsical way Alex approaches a song.😀

No else sounded like sax player Paul Desmond. His stint with Dave Brubeck's group was legendary! Smooth, silky and one of a kind, Paul's music will be around for many years. Willis Jackson is a relative unknown to me. He has a totally different approach to the sax. He's a more of an in your face kind of player who loves to have fun. This is evident when you listen to the featured tracks on this episode. Alex Dean is a Canadian music treasure who has been playing for many years. I thought I would start the show with four tracks from his excellent recording "At This Point". Enjoy!!

Vocalist Michael Franks has been around long enough to have influenced a slew of musicians. Not only other vocalists but musicians as well. On this episode I am featuring mostly recordings from the 1970's and 1980's. His voice is smooth and sultry but more importantly, inviting. When we listen to smooth jazz vocals these days, Michael Franks was a big part of setting the stage for a form of vocalizing that is still popular today. Another person who comes to mind is vocalist Al Jareau. When I was going to university in Montreal back in the 1970's, there was a sax player by the name of Bob Mover. One night at one of the university party's held in the cafeteria, Bob Mover was the musical entertainment. What a discovery. He could really play his ass off. Four tracks are featured on today's episode that I hope will introduce his music to more people. Other people featured on the show include influential pianist Bill Evans, sax player Brew Moore, as well as guitarist John Scofield among others.

Starting off today's episode is African piano legend Randy Weston. A unique way of presenting his music has always been his hallmark. It also made him an influence on many other pianists. Also featured on the show is one of the greatest big band leaders ever, the great Count Basie. The recording I selected is from a recording he made for the great Roulette label. Although not in the same influence and importance as Blue Note or Decca to name a couple, Roulette did have a roster of greats such as Sarah Vaughan and Montreal trumpet great Maynard Ferguson as examples.

A varied mix of musicians are featured on today's show. One of my favorite guitarists, ever who I never get tired of listening to is George Barnes. He is featured performing a standard from many years ago. Three Little Words, a song that was covered by many musicians. George gives the piece a real swing feel that is sure to get you moving.
Known mainly for his classical music achievements, Andre Previn made his mark in the jazz world as well. He performs a selection entitled Three's Company. His playing is focused and such a joy to listen to.

Today's episode is a special edition two great tenor sax players. Booker Ervin was a solid texas screamer who could play up a storm like few could. Mike Murley is a more lyrical and pride of the Canadian jazz scene for many years.

Teddy Edwards was always a solid and reliable sax player who for many years performed on the west coast. Later in life he would record and accompany the great singer songwriter, Tom Waits. Guillermo Bazzola who is originally from Argentina, now living in Spain has been entertaining many listeners with his captivating guitar style. Canadian pianist Paul Bley at least for me always made intriguing recordings and was somewhat of an introspective performer. We have a chance to listen to a beautiful piece of music entitled Kid Dynamite from his classic recording Turning point.

Today's episode is a mixed bag of great talent. German bassist Eberhard Weber is featured on two selections.
Trumpet player Donald Byrd who was also a dentist is featured on the Monk classic Round Midnight. His rich warm tone is on display for all to enjoy. This is one trumpet player I have been listening to for decades. I always felt he always flew under the radar so to speak.
The one and only Chet Baker is also featured and although we only get to listen to one track, hopefully there are listeners out there who might appreciate his sense of timing and gorgeous tone.
