It’s time to reinvent your sales life.…your sales career is good, but not great. Your customers like you but don’t love you. Every potential customer does not want to talk to you (the salesperson), even if they need your product or service. You keep reading the same sales books and listening to the same CD’s and podcasts. Everyone is telling you to do the same old things. It's time to make a change. In his trailblazing and wonderfully refreshing book, Allan Langer takes on the outdated, overused and utterly ineffective sales philosophies of the past and kicks them to the curb. Today’s customers do not want a sales pitch, do not want to be coerced, and absolutely do not want to be “closed.”
In today's episode we discuss his book. Turn the page as we discuss the ability to sell more than you ever have in your career and selling customers a product or service and actually feel good about yourself doing it. We want you to never have to use a sales pitch again. How will we accomplish this? SELL more by SELLING less.
The 7 Secrets is your GPS with a new destination. This new route that will take you from where you are now, to a new place on your personal map that will change your life and the life of your loved ones. It will also change the life of your customers, as they will go from hating salespeople, to only wanting to do business with you. There are 5.5 million family-owned businesses in the US. If you are a small business owner, there is a good chance you will work with a family member or will during your business journey. Running a small business can be challenging but rewarding; however, running a family-owned business has a unique set of challenges; when done right, it can significantly impact your family and community more than you ever imagined.
In an article published in the Harvard Business Review, they uncover " 6 Key Traits to Building a Strong Family Business" They include running your business with a value system, vision for the future, involvement with your company and community, cohesion & interaction, family governance, and leadership principles and roles.
We could not agree more, and it was self-evident during our interview with owners NIROPE from Cardis Furniture. They have found success by acquiring all six of these traits and strong values passed down to them from their parents and older family members who came to America as immigrants. But it was more than having the right traits that helped this family business move into the third generation, an accomplishment that only 12% of companies achieve.
Tune in to hear how these innovative business owners built in-house advertising and marketing teams to save time and streamline operations. Innovation is one area they excelled in; they also brought the concept of i delivery same-day and next-day delivery long before their competitors. With all their success, they remain humble and connected to their community; above all, it was clear that their work supporting charities gave them the most incredible joy.

Spring has arrived here in Rhode Island, meaning more time outside for you and your family, and let's not forget our beloved family pets. This trio state that their Coquito evokes feelings of good vibes and tastes of the islands and brings official taste of their Puerto Rico culture to the masses. This team of entrepreneurs won a coveted space as one of the eight finalists in the Harbor One pitch contest in September of 2022. Although this brand is very successful, it has not always been smooth sailing as Victor shares the ups and downs of bringing their brand to life.
We touch on everything from creating mood boards, branding and marketing decisions, the vision behind their logo design, working with a research and development team, finding a distributor, following your gut, the challenges of finding suppliers & expansion, and working with local businesses and influences to build a strong brand message and educate consumers.
If you have yet to enjoy trying this fresh-tasting liquor, here is more about the rich culture behind this family tradition. "For generations in Puerto Rican culture, Coquito is a beverage enjoyed around the holidays. Culturally speaking, Latino celebrations are almost always connected to sharing a drink with your most beloved family members and friends. The creator of the original recipe is a mystery, but everyone from Puerto Rico remembers to bring the Coquito to the table! Most Puerto Rican families have their secret recipe created by a special someone. Each variation of this delicious drink is a twist to the standard recipe—one thing is for sure; you cannot make it without love and a strong Rum!"

In life and business experience, talent, focus, support, and knowledge are power. There is a great benefit to working with a mentor or industry expert who has a wealth of golden nuggets to share with you as an entrepreneur. Let’s face it, running your business is hard. Day-to-day decision-making takes many skills sets that one business owner may not have. We are often juggling so many pieces of running the day-to-day operations. There is a wide abundance of benefits in regard to working with another experienced leader. By doing so frequently, they become a sounding board that can be open and objective. This can be significantly more challenging if you are a solopreneur because talking to yourself can become lonely. Perhaps you have a business partner, you will encounter situations where you may not agree on the direction where your business is headed. Having an outside source to help to resolve different viewpoints can help save not only the business dynamic but encourage healthy interpersonal relationships within the business.
In today's episode, we spoke with Jeff Bodenstab from the Rhode Island branch of Service Corps of Retired Executives also known as SCORE. As we head into a recession, the resources mentioned in today’s episodes are FREE. This is a great benefit to our small business community as we actively track our expenses. Print media is still king and there is a significant impact when businesses connect with their local newspaper. In today's discussion, we talk with John Howell, Editor/Publisher of the Warwick Beacon, among many publications, he is a contributor. The Beacon is a local newspaper published in little ole Warwick, Rhode Island and one we are very familiar with here at Practical BizZ. You will be surprised to find that many local papers are small businesses and rely on their community's support to stand the test of time.
You may be shocked to uncover this is not your grandfather's newspaper. Most local newspapers offer the paper as an online subscription and provide links from your advertising to your website with one click. Only a few have even incorporated podcasting as a way to help the community learn more about your business and include a glimpse behind the scenes. A combination of print news, online, and podcasting is a great way to meet local business owners. Remember, people do more business with people they know, admire, and trust.
This local journalism legend shares everything from how he and his partner found a creative way to fund their first of many publications and how they have kept the newspaper relevant and a significant part of the small business community. The local paper is an excellent resource for customers where they find everything LOCAL, from the news, sports, dining, arts and entertainment, exciting editorials, obituaries, legal notices, videos, and an array of happenings. In the world of social media, we have found that working with your local newspaper is often a grossly underrated resource and an opportunity many business owners do not take advantage of as part of a well-developed marketing plan. If you are a brick-and-mortar location, most of your business will come from within a five to ten-mile radius. This episode is a must-listen podcast if you are looking for an effective and affordable way to connect with your customers.
Here are just a few ways to connect with your local newspaper:

We are joined this week by our guest R.I. Secretary of State Gregg Amore and Maureen Ewig, Director of Business Services at the Rhode Island S.O.S. offices, to get the details on what you need to know and the services available to help small businesses just like yours. We know many business owners often dread the "red tape" that can often come with opening or expanding their growing business here in "Little Rhody." During this interview, nothing is off the table; we cover the process of opening and closing a business, the required paperwork and how to find business records, when you need to complete filings, with how to remain in good standing with the business department. It is not as dull as it sounds; we promise if you hate paperwork, they have so many solutions, but beyond that did you know they offer support services for businesses as well?
You may be pleasantly surprised by how down-to-earth this dynamic business duo is. Secretary of State Mr. Amore, a retired educator, who ironically was the civics teacher of Steph, our Social Media Manager. During our conversation, I found as an educator, Mr. Amore shared many of our core values and made himself accessible for our interview when we reached out to his office; as a business owner, I appreciated that to the point where they came down to record at our office. Not only did Maureen have a long history of service to the State of the R.I. business community, which made me honestly a little nervous for our interview since this was the first time having an elected official or state employee on our podcast until Maureen rolled into our parking lot in her 4-door Jeep Wrangler. I uncovered she was a Jeeper, and I was instantly at ease. How Rhode Island is that?

What is restructuring? Restructuring is usually when you face financial troubles or pressures. You take action to modify your financial situation and other operational aspects of your company. Be prepared to strengthen your company with a view to achieving better and more efficient policies. Increase that profit and adapt to the changing market.
Why is this necessary? There are lots of changes occurring in our economy. The way people are spending their money, what they’re spending their money on, and how they are investing their money.
· Reallocate resources.
· Look for areas that are under performing to make necessary changes.
· Cutting out unnecessary positions or find better uses for your in-house talent
· Form new partnerships to collaborate with.
· Sell assets, refinance to free up cash, or refine to lower those interest rates
· If you’re not making a profit, is it a decrease in sales?
· Major tasks not assigned to a responsible person Is it due to change in staffing? Newly created process that nobody has mastered yet? New products and lack of familiarity? A good example of this would be a new billing system for your clients. Sometimes accounts receivable payments go overlooked.
· Changing customer needs and demands.
· Ready to expand? MAJOR MOVE! Add those key components and people.
How are you going to make these necessary changes? Planning!
· Input from all your staff at all levels.
· Not just from the top.
· What is the change and what risks are involved?
· Buy in from your team – people dislike change.
· Communication.
· Costs Projections.
· Legal tax if you are selling or merging.
Our Top 5 Reasons to make these necessary changes
· Increased efficiency
· Better communication
· New opportunities
· Better use of talent
· Reduced costs

These might range from nightmares, supply chain issues, rising inflation, data breaches, staffing shortages, and more. We’re all on a boat in a similar storm.
Our guest, Megan Cook, the owner of Protein Princess, is going to enlighten us all about Business Owner Burnout.
How to avoid burning out?
· Give yourself “me time”

We have Chris Ball from Paint Parties and More with Chris. She was a general manager for my daycare, Family Tree for six years. She worked for me for ten years in total before taking her leap of faith with her small business. Chris has painted many murals for me at my centers. She became the very first client at Stellar Business Concepts in April of 2022.
Like many, business owners she has some fears, but she continues to put herself out there and get out of her comfort zone. What are some common fears that prevent people from taking that leap with starting their business?
· Failure
· Imposter syndrome
· Rejection
· Lack of Education or Experience
· Lack of Funding
· Loss of Freedom
· Added Responsibility and Stress
· Lack of Stability
· Lack of New Ideas
· Economic Outlook
How to overcome these fears?
· Set smaller goals and gradually build out to larger ones
· Build your supporters; family, friends, coaches, similar businesses who will help connect you with customers
· Understanding the beginning is hard but with planning, consistency, and focus you can overcome these challenges.
· Never compare yourself, we’re all walking a different path.
· Get out of your comfort zone
· Keep learning and keep moving
It will be challenging, stressful, and overwhelming at times. Keep moving forward because the reward is much greater than the doubts and fears. Always believe in yourself and the support will follow. Never quit! If you do get stuck or feel like giving up, hire a mentor or a business coach and they will be able to approach and analyze the situation differently for you. Sometimes a different perspective is all that’s needed to make it through treacherous waters.
In this week's episode host Erica Saccoccio discuss her thoughts about her passion for working with people. The best way to have a successful business is to take care of your people, and when I mention people, I am talking about your employees, customers, and community, both in person and online. Company culture is more than a new buzzword; it is your company's heartbeat, right along with your values and mission. Customers and employees select and stay with businesses and business owners they connect with. Honestly, being attentive and responsive to your people will move your success needle more than your pricing, the excellent logo, the fancy website, and the banding colors you have chosen. Sure, those are tools to move people from point A to point B, but once you capture the attention of the masses, can you keep them with you is the more significant predictor of success.

According to the headlines, the recession of all recessions is heading our way in 2023. As big businesses prepare with scaling back, layoffs and strategy, could this shift provide an opportunity for small businesses to do the same? There is some positive news as small business owners; we have advantages over big corporations. We can make decisions quickly while picking up top talent for positions we have been seeking to fill over the past two years. Recessions can be a time for growth opportunities; for example, a business owner may decide that now is the perfect time to implement their exit plan. New millionaires are made as one business exit. This opportunity allows you to purchase an existing business with that nest egg you may have put aside for your dream business.

In this conversation, Erica Saccoccio, Child Care Directors Chair Creator, Practical Bizz Podcast host, multi-location childcare owner, and current board member of riaeyc (the Rhode Island Association for the Education of Young Children), is joined by fierce children's education advocate, Coordinator of Program Quality for Bright Stars, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Rhode Island Alyson Panzarella to discuss the benefits of being an active member of riaeyc.
The candid conversation goes beyond a list of benefits, as the two share how being an active member of riaeyc has helped them grow as professionals. Beyond her duties at riaeyc, Alyson has focused her studies on advocacy law and has begun teaching at the University of Rhode Island in the past year. Erica shares how riaeyc helped play a role in moving her program up the QRS ladder as programs were among the first group of centers to become part of Bright Stars in RI.
Nothing is off the table; we discuss the importance of early childhood education, including children ages 5-12 years old. Being involved with riaeyc makes business sense from a childcare owner's perspective. The recent additions of childcare retention bonuses, free professional development opportunities, and scholarships to complete formal education programs at the college level thanks to the work done at the state level by riaeyc to help lift teachers and centers in RI to higher levels of quality. We learn about how to use feedback from teachers and other directors to build better work cultures and attract and retain top talent at a time when staffing shortages have hit our nation.
And, of course, we share membership perks such as discounts and reward programs afforded to activate paying members of riaeyc, upcoming initiatives, events, advocacy movements, and public policy. Lastly, we leave the audience information on how to get involved by enrolling or renewing a membership, business opportunities to become a sponsor, or apply to be a board member during the next election season.
"It is the mentor's responsibility to create a safe and trusting space that enables a mentee to stretch and step outside their comfort zone, take risks, and show up authentically." ― Lisa Fain. In this week's episode, Erica meets with LA and Ed from Mentor RI to talk about the many opportunities business owners, early childhood, and youth educators have to network together while rebuilding social skills and relationships and making connections that matter to our communities. Great business leaders often use mentors or are mentors to others as part of their professional growth during their careers. You can use mentorship as one way in your organization to attract and retain top talent and provide internships for those seeking a career path when graduating from High School. This feel-good episode discusses my favorite two topics, education and business.
Here are just a few stats to drive the point home as to why your business should be involved in some mentorship program and how we can positively impact the children and youth in our communities.
Special Episode: Hello RI Vendors & Artists !!! This episode is for you if you are a small business owner looking to enter the retail or wholesale market or expand into new spaces to sell your products and services. This month we are lucky to be working with 40 amazing artisans and vendors for our upcoming holiday event. During our Happy Holiday event, we will welcome up to 400 shoppers and offer networking opportunities with business owners in the retail, wholesale, or consignment spaces. I understand that many handmade artisan-type businesses often use vendor fairs, consignment stores, and online shopping platforms to keep overhead low while trying out different product launches with a small capital commitment.
In today's economy, this is smart business on the wholesale side; you must remember that retailers have to compete with many more shopping options than in the past. They will be looking for the best products, sales support, marketing help, and better pricing and timelines from suppliers. Solid relationships and smart strategies come into play to keep your business profitable. No matter what route you decide in 2023, these seven tips can help you increase your sales, market your brand more effectively and consistently, and create strong relationships that continue to feed your referrals and demand for your products and services.

Thomas Edison said," Good fortune is what happens when opportunity meets with planning." If you are a frequent listener, you will often hear our host and guests mention the importance of creating a business plan. When you have a well-thought-out business plan, you can have an advantage over your competition and give your team direction and a shared vision. A business plan supports the business owner and becomes a valuable guide to running day-to-day business operations, setting goals and objectives, hitting sales goals, and keeping costly mistakes at a minimum. The number 10 reasons for business failure are all addressed in a business plan, so our question is, if you could stack the odds of success in your favor by being prepared, why would you wait?
