Today, we have a deeply personal and important conversation with Janice Tappin-Miller, a mother who carries both warmth and unimaginable grief. Janice joins us to share the story of her beloved daughter, Arlana Miller—a bright, compassionate, and driven young woman who tragically passed away at just 19 years old.
Arlana was a dedicated student at Southern University in Baton Rouge, a talented cheerleader, and a young woman who uplifted those around her. She dreamed of becoming a psychiatrist, wanting to help others navigate their life struggles. But behind her encouraging spirit, Arlana faced her own demons as she battled to maintain mental health—struggles that she openly shared in a heartbreaking farewell message before her passing in spring of 2022.
Today, Janice invites us into her world—the love she holds for her daughter, the pain of losing her, and the message she hopes to share in Arlana’s honor. This is a conversation about grief, but also about the importance of mental health awareness and the ways we can support one another.

Dr. Kelly Page is a public speaker and social design ethnographer who works at the intersection of social learning and digital participation. She works with individuals and organizations interested in learning how they can be more truly social. She is passionate about working with people to develop their vision, voice and social ways to live, work and learn.
She is a motivational speaker on social leadership, women, and social change and being your most confident self by being a stand for others.
Kelly is founder and curator of the social design studio, Live What You Love, and the storytelling initiative focused on amplifying the work and impact of women, Grateful4Her. She has a Ph.D. in Web Knowledge from UNSW (Sydney, Australia), is a Research Fellow in Social Leadership at the prestigious Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA). Her work has been published in peer-review business, technology and education journals, and featured in Fast Company, The New York Times, WSJ, The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Women.
Her work is published in Studies in Higher Education, International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, Psychology & Marketing, Behavior & Information Technology, International Journal of Retailing & Distribution Management, Marketing Review, Strategic Change, Journal of Marketing Management, Journal of Consumer Behaviour. She won best AM Paper for The Web Makes Me Feel project (2010), a BIMA award in Data Category for Karen (2015) and opened TedxCardiff 2011 speaking on Rediscovering Friendship.

My guest in this episode of the Everything Matters Podcast features Founder & CEO of Red Banyon Evan Nierman possesses 20 years of high-level experience in public relations, marketing, crisis management, online media, international relations and public affairs. Throughout his career, he has provided strategic communications counsel to top business leaders, government officials and presidential candidates, and private individuals.
Prior to forming Red Banyan, Evan Nierman served as Director of Communications for a fast-growing, highly scrutinized start-up where he represented the company and steered the CEO through interviews with top-tier media including dozens of international, national and local print, TV and online outlets.
Previously, as the founder of the Washington office for a boutique PR agency specializing in crisis management and foreign affairs, Nierman guided international and corporate clients through high-stakes, complex situations. Nierman was responsible for the agency’s largest and most complex account, the Government of Ethiopia. Working mostly from the Ethiopian Embassy in Washington, Nierman conceptualized and executed communications and public affairs strategies. He overhauled the Ethiopian Embassy’s website, developed its marketing and communications collateral, wrote speeches and op-eds for the Ambassador, wrote and distributed press releases and fact sheets and helped coordinate interviews, events and public appearances that improved the Embassy’s reach and reputation.

He calls himself an "irrepressible optimist". Coach Michael Taylor is an entrepreneur, author, coach, motivational speaker and radio show host who has dedicated his life to empowering men to reach their full potential. He knows first hand how to overcome adversity and build a rewarding and fulfilling life.
No stranger to diversity, Coach Michael was born in the inner city projects of Corpus Christi, Texas to a single mother with six children. Although he dropped out of high school in the 11th grade, his commitment to living an extraordinary life supported him in defying the odds.
Persistence, patience, and perseverance are what has driven his success and undergirds his drive to share his life lessons to heal and inspire others. At the behest of a terribly painful divorce, Michael faced the humiliation of bankruptcy and foreclosure. Alone and homeless, he contemplated suicide, but ultimately chose life.
Today he will talk to us about his latest mission and book, which are intended to Shatter The Stereotypes that surround black men in America. Michael Taylor’s book, Shattering Black Male Stereotypes: Eradicating the Ten Most Destructive Media-Generated Illusions About Black Men is a non-fiction work that opens up dialogue about ten of the most common myths of black men that the media portrays.

In addition to gracing the TEDx Asheville Stage in 2022, she has delivered trainings in arenas such as the International Conference on Physician Health, WELLMED Physician Conference in Greece, and Women in Medicine, and serves as faculty facilitator for the ACGME’s Equity Matters Project. My guest today on the Everything Matters Podcast is Author and storyteller, Jeff Buehner. Jeff joins us to share the fascinating story of Sultan Mansa Musa of Mali. Sultan Musa was one of the richest men to ever walk the earth, and he was also very generous in sharing his wealth secrets with anyone who showed interest.
A very kind lady at whose home Jeff was pouring concrete as a contractor, after hearing him complain about the life he had, she handed him a manuscript and gave him 24 hours to read and return it. What he found inside were the Sultan's 7 Secrets, which was an incredible story about the life of a man that he'd never heard before that would change his life forever.
After this experience, Jeff always knew that had an obligation to share the gift of the Sultan’s Seven Secrets with as many people as possible before I retire, and he has now made it my personal mission to share these secret's as far as he possibly can.
He couldn’t just say “Thanks” for this priceless gift that had been given him and then wander off into the sunset.
Nor was it enough to have shared this information with the hundreds of people who had approached him for advice over the years.
After experiencing the massive shift his life underwent, having been frustrated, uncertain and even scared before discovering the Sultan’s Seven Secrets, he was transformed into a bold, confident, ultra-successful person. I recently had the pleasure of hosting Popviewers CEO, Chris Witherspoon on the Everything Matters Podcast. Such a wonderfully fun conversation! Chris is truly an inspiration and trailblazer in the space of content creation and consumption.

Witherspoon got his first taste of media as an intern with ABC’s Good Morning America, and has never looked back. He is an alumnus of the prestigious NBC Page Program and of Ohio University.

This episode of the Everything Matters Podcast couldn't be more special to me, as I have the opportunity to reconnect with one of my favorite coaches in college. Coach Fitz Hill was a graduate assistant in 1988 at my college Alma Mater, Northwestern State University, in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
As an 18 year-old young man attending college there in a strange corner of the state of Louisiana. Being a 6 hours drive away from home, there was nothing I needed more than support, guidance, and a swift kick in the ass to help keep a hard-headed boy like me in line. Coach Fitz, along with a few other coaches of mine, provided just that and made a big impact on me. He was like a big brother to me, and showed us how to conduct ourselves in certain situations. They all played an integral role in shaping me into the man I would become in life. In this show, I take the opportunity to acknowledge Coach Fitz for the contributions he made to me at a very pivotal point in my life.
The youngest of three brothers, Coach Fitz Hill was born and raised in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. His father, James, routinely worked 14-hour days as a production manager at Arkadelphia Beverage Company in the daytime and janitor in the nighttime. His mother, Mary, was a high school registrar and volunteered with local children and college students at her church.
Coach Fitz earned an athletic scholarship to play football at Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe, and played Wide Receiver. After the untimely passing of his father, he transferred back home to support his mother. After graduating from Ouachita Baptist, he joined the U.S. Army and served during the Gulf War as a transportation officer, supporting American troops during Desert Shield and Desert Storm wars; during this time he received the Bronze Star and Commendation Medal.
He earned a double major from Ouachita College - a B.A. in Communications and Physical Education. A Master's in Student Personnel Services from Northwestern State University while working there as a Graduate Assistant coach. He also holds his Ed.D from the University of Arkansas. He held assistant a head coaching positions at University of Arkansas and San Jose State, and assistant positions at Utah State, University of Arkansas, Northwestern State. This episode is a tribute to Black History Month and people of color living in the United States for America, as well as to highlight and promote Season 2 of the Founding In Color docu-series playing on Comcast/NBCUniversal's LIFTLabs and the Peacock Network. I am so thrilled to have my friend, Zaira Solano, as my next guest! I have known Zaira for about 13 years, and watching her develop into the Force of Nature that she is has been such a joy!
Born as the child of two immigrants, Zaira Solano always held a compassion for what it meant, and as she grew older that compassion deepened. Both her parents were from the Dominican Republic, and both practiced Dentistry there. However, after spending summers being mentored by her aunt who was an OBGYN in the D.R., she became inspired that this was the direction she wanted to go in for her career and life. It wasn't until high school that she came in contact with the art of debate with the debate club. She fell in love with it, and knew this was what she wanted to pursue it further, and possibly go into law. She started to see a possible dovetailing of her love for debate with her growing desire to make a difference for immigrant families.
After watching many family members and friends go through the turbulent processes of becoming an American citizen, she began to realizing the valuable opportunities she had been given by her parents' choice to have her born in the United States so that she could a chance at the life she now has. Her passion grew, and she knew she wanted nothing more than to help others find that same opportunity for their families. She would go to law school with this vision in mind, and has been on a path to help as many families to achieve this dream as possible. Her goal is to help 1 million people gain their American citizenship over the next decade!
Zaira founded the Solano Law Firm, a boutique immigration law practice with offices in Atlanta, Georgia and Birmingham, Alabama and soon in Phoenix, Arizona. Solano Law Firm primarily focuses on Removal/Deportation defense, family based petitions, and employment based petitions.
Zaira earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Georgia College & State University. While earning her degree, she worked in the office of a solo practitioner in the metro Atlanta area. She gained valuable, hands-on experience in family law, criminal law, and worker’s compensation law prior to her legal education. Zaira worked for several firms throughout the Atlanta area while earning her law degree at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School. Zaira discovered her passion for immigration law during law school. Later in her training she clerked for a premier immigration firm in Atlanta, Georgia. Zaira also worked in the Fulton County Public Defender’s Office in the Complex Case Division.

Today on the Everything Matters Podcast we welcome special guest, Des Dickerson. Des is the Founder, CEO and lead Brand Strategist for Uncommon Collective, a Public Relations and Outsourced Brand Management Team that supports companies to attract media and cultivate strategic partnerships that make an impact. She is a distinguished recipient of the highly coveted Forbes 30 Under 30 list, a list which indicates a mark of incredible accomplishment and success. Des grew up in Northern California, in the city of Sacramento. After high school, she attended Arizona State University, but would ultimately drop out to purse her interest in the television production. Her first gig with with the Dr. Phil show, where she worked behind the set as an assistant before moving into a Producer role. She worked for networks such as CBS, HGTV and YouTube TV. She grew tired of the significant number of hours that were required to be successful in the television industry, and began to take on side hustles, managing social media for small business using the Snapchat app. She noticed a unique space beginning to open up, as other companies began reaching out to enroll her services. From this experience, she would begin working solely for herself as a digital marketer, and ultimately co-found a company called Creative Label with a close friend; a one-stop-shop for the marketing needs of brands such as Essence, PopSugar and Refinery29. She would then go on to to found her personal venture, Uncommon Collective.
Des’ expertise has led her to educate and inspire other entrepreneurs and businesses about digital trends and branding best practices. She has been featured on Create Cultivate, “CTV Morning Live,” Power Your Purpose with Megan Accardo and Lori Harder’s Earn Your Happy podcast. She has helped to cultivate multi-six figure brand deals by helping clients be seen in major public platforms such as Forbes, Pop Sugar, Instyle, People and more. Today, Jarrett Thomas joins the Everything Matters Podcast and host, Bradford Speaks, to share his journey from the streets of NYC and the Bronx in the hallways of Corporate America and entrepreneurship. He started his career in Sales in his early 20s, choosing not to go the college route like everyone else in his family, many of whom went on to become educators. Jarrett has a huge LinkedIn audience, and is a part of their Creator Program, a select group of creators that are skilled at driving interest and high engagement with what they create.
Jarrett was raised by his parents, and watched his Dad's incredible work ethic and that taught him what it may take to get the success he wanted in life. Growing up in the streets and lacking businessmen and women as examples to look up to, he never imagined he could have a career in business. Like many young, black American males growing up in the inner cities, it was Rap music and Sport (Basketball for Jarrett) that he mostly saw as careers he could reach for and possibly attain. When he got his first sales jobs - through being coachable, humble and willing to allow his managers and peers to pour into him - he found massive success, making more money than any of his siblings had made, he knew he'd found something he could be really good at.
As his career and levels of success progressed, he also began to take up a keen interest in the magic of marketing and became a student of what it takes to influence buying decisions and buyer behavior. From there, he began to build his career in Sales and Sales leadership, and would ultimately discover the value of being authentically himself, no matter what the situation. He never felt at home with in a suit and tie and wing toe shoes, so he took the leap and threw on jeans, a tee and his Chicago White Socks cap and showed up at work, challenging the social norms - expressing to his CEO that he wanted his customers to know who he really is; a real guy, a father, a husband, a man with problems just like them. Reluctantly given the green light, he began his journey on what it means to have your own personal brand, and this is what he helps others now to do for themselves. Enjoy the show!

Today's guest on the Everything Matters Podcast is Nadia Rahali. Nadia and I met just a couple of years ago, and right away we knew we were kindred spirits; connected souls on a mission to make a difference in the world. We immediately developed a tremendous amount of respect for one another due to our shared commitment of serving humanity with our lives and our talents. We have forged a sister/brother-like, unbreakable bond in a very brief timeframe.
Nadia grew up with both her mother and father, and witnessed a very kind and loving relationship between them as a child. They took the time to ensure she was well educated around who she was and the rich heritage from which she hails. She is a Daddy's girl from Casablanca, a city located i North Africa. Nadia shares her story of how she grew up with big dreams of someday moving to America. After high school she came to America to study the giants of the Civil Rights movements, whom she read about in school books and heard about through empowering stories her parents and relatives shared with her as a child. She boldly moved to the United States to fulfill her dream of attending university here; she chose Old Dominion University in the state of Virginia and studied African American studies, a topic that fascinated her since she was a little girl.
In her 20s she found herself involved in an abusive relationship and marriage, and like many other in those same situations, found it very difficult to locate an exit for herself. She would soon find the support, resources and ultimately the strength and courage to stand up for herself and finally say goodbye. She never looked back and has gone on to build a wonderful life and career that she is very proud of. Nadia currently works with the United Way organization, where she networks with and wines and dines major financial movers and shakers to encourage and inspire them to direct their efforts to supporting the Loudermilk Center of Atlanta, GA. She also consults privately with other organizations to develop fundraising strategies to identify sources to help them achieve their financial goals. This is an extraordinary American story - one of thousands of immigrants who came across the Atlantic to find the American Dream.

Mr. Gregory (Greg) Rutledge, Jr. is the Founder of Atlanta Barber Institute, Inc. (ATLBI). He is an Entrepreneur, Licensed Master Educator and Licensed Master Barber and the architect behind the creation of the most innovative and cutting-edge barbering school in existence. Gregory holds additional certifications in Advanced Hair Colorist, (SMP) Scalp Micropigmentation, MicroBlading, NanoBlading and Hair Replacement Units due to Alopecia. He was recently recognized for his Outstanding Leadership by the Education 2.0 USA recently held in Las Vegas, NV.
Gregory picked up his first pair of clippers at the age of 12 in his mother’s kitchen and found an immediate interest in the craft, However, his teen years came and he found trouble that would cost him 20 years of his life in prison. Decades later, he decided to pursue that heart-held career as a barber, and he deepended his education within the barbering industry so that he could extend his career and his reach beyond the barber chair. Coming from a family of educators, he knew education was the key to making the impact he wanted to make. He did the necessary research in the State of Georgia to discover what it would take to open up an educational institution for barbering. He dared to dream big, and what he would create goes far beyond that dream he once had. He now serves dozens of barbering students, men and women, each year, and is fully living his passion.
Gregory is keenly aware of the serious need for more tradespeople in a variety of industries, and he continues to work with young people, offering employment through Rutledge Maintenance Services, a family-owned Heating & Air company that his sons operate together. As a society we are doing wrong by so many of our unemployed adults and underemployed young people. I’ve proven I can do it before, now I’m doing it again. And who does it benefit? Today's show is especially special for me, as I have the honor of interviewing a dear friend of mine with whom I recently reconnected. Robert and I hadn't talked in over a decade; as life would have it, we lost contact with each other, but as soon as we were in each other's realm again, it was as if no time had been missed. A timeless friendship. As soon as I caught wind of Robert's ascension into the Executive Suite, I reached out right ways because I knew I wanted to have him come onto the Podcast to share his story with you. Robert and I have always held a tremendous amount of mutual respect for one another for our leadership and the commitment we share to make a difference with others.
Robert grew up in Washington, DC with both his parents and siblings. They worked hard to keep food on the table and to educate their children. Robert's parents were a huge inspiration for him; his father was a businessman and Robert would pattern his career after his, entering the business world of finance as a career. In this interview Robert shares his remarkable story of how he pushed him self to be his best, remained humbled and never remembers to always acknowledged and be in service to those who may be less fortunate than yourself. Giving back is essential in his opinion. Robert falls within the 1% of minorities who hold the designation of Certified Public Accountant. After a near tragedy, his wife pushed him to go after his dream in spite of what he was facing.

Due to his Grandfather's inaction, he witnessed first-hand the possible consequences he had to face due to his unwillingness to take action. This week's episode of the Everything Matters Podcast features special guest, John H.F. Douglas III, also known as "J". In his teenage years, John stumbled upon a need that his close friends had and requested that he do it for them - it was a haircut. He didn't promise them the cut would be great, but he assured them he would do his very best. This has become the way in which "J" chooses to live his life; never doing anything half-ass, and always giving 100% in anything he would take on.
In 1995 "J" would establish his own shop and name it FADEOLOGIST; this is where the fascinating story began, as he started to really perfect the science and technology of the haircut called the "Fade". The fade is a popular and timeless style of haircut that permeates Black culture and portrays a clean and dapper look with tapered side temples and nape of the neck, and various top of the head lengths and styles to accompany it. He would also coin certain terminology such as calling his barbers "FADENICIANS". FADEOLOGIST® was founded 1995 in Atlanta, GA and is now one of the most recognized brands in the barbering industry, and one of the longest standing barbershop entities in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
In alignment with its commitment to the communities it serves, FADEOLOGIST® went on to establish a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization called LIFE GROOMING TOOLS FOUNDATION. This organization helps boys from the ages of 12-15, mostly from single parent homes. It is designed to help train these young men for leadership, while teaching them the value of earning and investing their dollar.
I am so excited to feature "J" on the Everything Matters Podcast; I consider him a friend. I have known him for more than 20 years, and I have had the personal pleasure of watching him not only develop his craft as a barber and a service-eccentric businessman, but also create and build a household ATL barbering brand that grinds within a purpose to make a real difference.

It further asserts that REAL power is found in the places we aren't told to look; in the unusual and hidden places. Knowledge alone won't cut it! Look at it - we are living in a day and age that is littered with information on top of information, and those mounds of data still don't lead us to being satisfied and fulfilled in life. I am so thrilled about today's episode, where a really special guest stops by to chat. Today's show features a dear friend and proverbial big brother of mine, Bruce Sampson. Bruce Sampson is the Director and Producer of the Believe Performance Arts Experience. At a very early age, Bruce became clear about the fact that he wanted to build a life and a career around music and the cultural arts. His parents, both educators and his father a musician, had a huge impact on his love for music. It was a single moment of watching a young Jackson 5 that lit a fire inside of him that has lived on for more than 3 decades. There have been many others along his artistic path who have an influenced and deepened his love for the arts. Bruce left our hometown of Bogalusa, Louisiana after completing High School and rarely looked back. He briefly attended Loyola University in New Orleans, La. until he realized he didn't want to do "music", he just wanted to sing! He then joined forced with the Young Americans, an International Music Outreach Tour, where he worked as an entertainer in a Music House in Atlanta, Ga. This is where he got his first real taste of life as an entertainer. He would re-join them later and began to cut his teeth on being a part of the production team and learned how to craft a show from beginning to end. Bruce is a talented, national and internationally published Writer, Arranger, Director and Producer of theatrical events that have appeared on stages across the globe. He is also a Speaker and Educator who intends to inspire the world's youth to dream BIG, and never let their circumstances get in their way as an excuse. Bruce has made an incredible contribution to the cultural arts community, and his daughters have followed in his footsteps to blaze their own trails in the same world of theatrical performance.

Ashley Mizzell, CEO & Founder of Breath To Blossom, which is a nonprofit organization providing accessible trauma-centered, mind-body therapeutic programs and mental health services to survivors of intimate trauma; heavily focusing on survivor populations of intimate abuse, sex trafficking and individuals working in the commercial sex industry. She is also a Yogi and Mindfullness Teacher.
Ashley opens up to Bradford around some of her own personal challenges and dealings with abusive relationships, and how she unwittingly allowed herself to be exploited and caught up in traumatic and self-destructive situations that caused behaviors and substances that led her to some very dark places. She shares the personal work she's done and how she one had an epiphany on her yoga mat one day and made the literal choice to love herself and give up the self-abusive ways she had adopted. Through this choice alone she began to truly heal herself, which has empowered her to be a huge support for those who are faced with similar types of abuse.

India Sampson, 19 year-old daughter of famous former college and NBA superstar, joins the Everything Matters Podcast and host Bradford Speaks, to share her journey from being a 13 year middle school-er to dreaming up the possibility of being a professional model. Never in her wildest dreams did she see what would come from the answering of a random DM from a modeling agency in Tennessee, a drive up to check out their legitimacy, and next up - Paris! An amazing peek into the mind of a teenager who not only gets the importance of responsibly managing her finances, but was and still is, driven to live out her dreams; she is also committed to being a catalyst for change in the high-fashion industry to open the doors and more opportunities for young Black American women to occupy the global runway. She has pranced the catwalk for designers such as Prada, Tom Ford, Brandon Maxwell, and many other household high-fashion brands. India is proof that you can have whatever you want in life when you are coach-able and willing to put in the hard work to have it!
