Being the adventures of one Madison Moffat (Queering the Air), whose principal interests are (at least for the purposes of this show): designer savagery, dystopic romanticism, and extreme theatrical pretension. P.W.E.I. Vs. The Moral Majority / Dance Of The Mad Bastards / Pop Will Eat ItselfFrom the 1990 album Cure for Sanity; this original version features the dark lord responding to The Moral Majority Jerry Falwell Snr, summonsing us to ‘Get up…. and make it snappy!’ Streaming services have since bafflingly sanitised this opening to the album by removing that critical call to action. Bad Life / Public Image LimitedThe 1984 album This is What You Want, This is What You Get seemed to be an intentional self-parody of a band who had insisted “We are not a band, we are a company”. Plastic pop meets a remaining punk attitude; although John Lydon had long disavowed that previous musical moment. I consider this the most intentionally plastic and antagonistic track on the album. Do That Dance / Primitive CalculatorsJust before breaking up, this 246 Johnston Street, Fitzroy based band formed in 1978 and released this single in 1979. It remains for me a precursor to much of the distorted industrial stuff I hear around the traps today. Mines Full of Maggots / Alien Sex FiendFrom the 1985 album Maximum Security, the point to playing this track from my own adolescent point of view was to annoy my father as much as possible. Sheer agitated repetition, like a clock cycle on dexamphetamine. Rockit Miss USA (Deathwish IV Mix) / Sci-Fi Sex Stars (pseudonym for Sigue Sigue Sputnik).A limited edition 12” released by Rough Trade Records in 1986, seemingly because Sputnik’s contracted company EMI wouldn’t touch it. Possibly to ensure EMI’s refusal, the cover features three transgender women half-dressed in bondage gear brandishing whips. Rough Trade decided to cover their more ‘uprightly excited’ body parts with a sticker, that has become more translucent with each decade. Be Fast Be Clean Be Cheap / Age of ChanceCalling both their style of music and their 1986 mini-album Crush Collision; this track title refers to the Big Food ethos and how it had ostensibly become an industrial relations and socio-economic catchcry for the ‘me decade’. In their parlance, this track is driving with Sonic Force. Indeed. I Don’t Know What It Is / Pete ShelleyAlready brandishing substantial punk credentials as the frontman of the then disbanded Buzzcocks, Shelley’s 1982 solo album ‘Homosapien’ embraced the new wave synthpop sound while maintaining his declaratory vocal sensibility. I view this track as the album’s distillation of both. Mr DNA / Smart Patrol / DevoThrough the prism of those ‘best of 70s/80s’ compilation albums, Devo may appear about as punk as Shakin’ Stevens. But even their massive hit ‘Whip It’ suggests subversion beneath the novelty. Tracks such as this one from the 1979 album ‘Duty Now For the Future’ are a pulsating scepticism towards mainstream culture and it’s atomising qualities, sitting easily with the electropunk/cyberpunk ethos and sound. Get a Dog Up Ya / Mr FloppyOn the 1993 album The Unbearable Lightness of Being a Dickhead, Ascot Vale based Mr Floppy mixed ocker frenzy, Oi! and samples from 90s late night television content and advertisements. Their merch included t-shirts brandishing the title of this track, aptly chosen by wardrobe for Ben Mendelsohn’s catalysing character in the grim oz suburban film Idiot Box. Dictator / The ClashThe Clash imploded as a group, resulting in Joe Strummer going it alone with what appeared to be a collective of models with mohawks; releasing in 1985 the least popular album to bear the band’s name, Cut the Crap. History has been kinder to this album than critics of the time (or Strummer himself) were. The criticism centred around what I find most appealing about it, it’s cacophony. It was derided for the very same reliance on incessant synthetic percussion and sampling that would only a few years later be very trendy indeed. Seconds Too Late / Cabaret VoltaireThis is the otherwise difficult to find 1980 7” version, from the compilation “The Original Sound of Sheffield ’78 –’82. Later to be known for their Hi NRG and House/Techno recordings, this harks back to their early middling success as Dadaistic post-punks. A serene change of pace for this rather manic episode of Rotations, it none-the-less menaces throughout, with percussion occasionally resembling a metal works incident. Eight Fivers / Gilla BandWith tracks like this 2022 release, from the album Most Normal, electro-punk (loosely termed) remains in good hands. This Irish self-declared noise band claim imperviousness to any particular genre, but that has never stopped me from pigeonholing. The cynicism towards consumerism, abandonment of good taste, repetition, chanting, clash clash bang bang; all good things. Oceania ‘Tis for Thee / Nineteen-Eighty-Four Motion Picture Soundtrack [Extract]This episode ends as all would if the magnificent vision of George Orwell had been realised, striving in glory for our homeland Oceania and for the love of Big Brother. Please stand to attention.

In this show, Brendan Bonsack presents tracks from The Clearing, an album by Jerome Ellis, exploring speech, dysfluency and history. As the liner notes describe the work, "The Clearing is a conceptual and musical tour de force that combines Jazz with the narratives of enslaved Africans, and experimental electronics with historical accounts of Black rebellion. The album centers speech but uses it as a starting point to not only depathologize dysfluent speech but to build new tools to critique anti-Blackness, linear time, culture, and power in our society." The Clearing is co-produced by Northern Spy/NNA Tapes and the Poetry Project.

On this week's episode, a crew of anti-pinkwashing, anti-Midsumma queer 3CR programmers have grabbed the mic for a collaborative takeover with their selection of certified bangers from Palestinian, Arab, First Nations, queer, and radical artists. Presented by Priya of Thursday Breakfast. This episode includes an interview with Amber, a white queer trans settler who speaks about the importance of autonomous queer and trans resistance against pinkwashing following this year’s protest action at the Midsumma pride parade on Feb 4. The action shone a spotlight on the hypocrisy of including cops in the march when vic pol assaulted, choked, and slapped resistors for refusing to normalise including the systemic violence of this colonial, carceral institution in what we’re supposed to believe is an event celebrating queer and trans people. The participation of people attending Midsumma and other bystanders in harassing resistors alongside the cops amplified how unsafe these events really are for those of us who reject ‘diversity and inclusion’, and how violent, carceral logics have infected our sites of self-expression. Latoya Hoeg is a trans woman of colour, who has been living in Melbourne for over 33+ years. she is an advocate for LGBTQIA+ Pacifica people. She is currently working for Star Health as a Community Engagement Worker for Covid-19 Team, and a Community Health Educator for the H2H (Hustling to Health) drop-in centre for sex street base work, also known as RhED. Latoya is an elder for the Samoan Fa'afafine Community here in Melbourne. She is the Secretary and advisor for PacifiqueX, a Pacifica LGBTIQA+ Community in Melbourne Narrm. Latoya is also that familiar voice and a producer on the radio show, PX Whanau at 3CR. Sasja Sÿdek is an indigenous Singaporean — a proud trans womxn of colour. As an activist and advocate for the transgender community, she sends an empowering message to others: “free yourself from the shackles of societal and gender expectations to live life authentically”. Juggling her multiple roles as a co-founder of Trans Sisters United and Trans Pride March Melbourne, as well as her work on the airwaves as one of 3CR’s radio host and producer for Queering The Air, it’s not hard to see Sasja’s dedication and passion for equality and human rights. While Sasja's unwavering vocal advocacy for her community comes from a place of strength and empowerment, it’s taken a journey of learning and self-determination for her to reach this point. Innez Tulloch is currently filling the shoes as the 3CR Volunteers and Training Coordinator. I presented my Tom T. Hall tribute show on 10 October 2021 following his passing on 20 August. As a child, Tom’s amazing song-writing and storytelling was something all my family loved; I found much joy and inspiration in the words and music. The show was vastly different to Out of the Pan – nothing queer; all the same, still some sense of justice e.g. The Monkey Who Became President and Tom’s cover of John Prine’s Paradise (environment). Song selection was hard because I love every Tom T. Hall song; as well as his more thoughtful songs, I hope the range I played conveyed love, including for his sense of humour and respect for country and bluegrass. I wish listeners much enjoyment. Pilar Aguilera first came to 3CR as a 17-year-old, first as a volunteer, then as a producer and presenter. In 2001 she worked as the first Ethnic Resource Coordinator for the station. Pilar joined the Committee of Management in 2018, as well as the Programming Sub-Committee; she is now Chairperson. She has worked in book publishing for 20 years and is a committed social justice/human rights activist. For this Rotations, she interviewed partner and musical genius Abe Dunovits. Abe has contributed with music to a few programs on 3CR; writing the theme music to Completada Bailable as well as Radio Capucha as well as being a guest on various programs. Abe has been making music for a few decades. There is a musical melange in his mind that drives him to create triumphant music, literature and art, which has been described as unconventional, inspired, avant-garde, luminary and memorable. I've always wanted to hear "Lazy Sunday Afternoon" by the Small Faces on a lazy Sunday arvo, so it was a joy and pleasure to open my first Rotations show with that song. However when it comes to finding the most interesting music these days I'm attracted to predominantly local, female artists. I don't why but the tunes our local girls are coming out with are just the best. Maybe it's got something to do with empowered expression at this particular moment in history, or maybe I just haven't been listening hard enough previously. Anyway it's a lovely time to be listening for new audio enhancement.
