Nichols Talk
Nichols Talk Podcast is a student-based podcast run out of Nichols School. The goal of the podcast series is to create a platform that promotes the Nichols community. By engaging different personalities and Nichols, we hope to foster unity by introducing the podcast individuals to a larger audience. In the process of making these podcasts, students, teachers, parents, and anyone who tunes in to listen will be provided with a unique opportunity to get to know the Nichols community in a not academic and socially friendly way. The platform provides a window into our Nichols community, which would particularly be helpful for those prospective students and parents considering Nichols. We think there is an opportunity for all to take part and project voices farther than just the classroom.
Introducing our next guest on the podcast: Ms. Watts (Nichols Middle School Theater Teacher). In this episode, we interview Ms. Watts, who is excited to share her story. She is currently the spokesperson for all Valu Home Centers commercials and training videos. Starting her acting career in elementary school, playing a snowman led her to study theater performance at the University of Buffalo. Now at Nichols, she teaches middle school theater and is leading the recreation of High School Musical currently. Tune in to hear more!
ntroducing our next guest on the podcast: Jared Contreras (Nichols Athletic Trainer). Jared is a core part of the Nichols athletic community, tending to any athlete. Jared talks about what led him to become an athletic trainer and his previous positions. As a part of Excelsior Orthopedics, he is not only Nichols’ trainer in the afternoons but also works in their office during the day. In this episode, we interview the Advancement Work of Life Interns. Justin and Drew run the Nichols Instagram and also the Nichols Blog. They speak about their motivations to join this WoL and provide more details about what they exactly do. They are both a part of the Basketball team and begin to speak about this past season and the student support they had the whole season.
In this episode, we interview the Boys Prep Hockey Captains, Tommy Yang and Chase Cameron. The boys are headed into the biggest weekend of the year, the NYS Championships. Tommy and Chase talk about how, as a team and individually, they are preparing for the weekend ahead. Chase and Tommy are both currently billeting; they go into detail about what it’s like living away from home. As captains, they describe what they want to leave behind for the team next year, as they both hope to plan junior hockey next year. In this episode, we interview Ciara Barone (Class of 2018). Ciara played Division 1 Ice hockey at Providence College after an impressive hockey career during her time at Nichols. Ciara studied Psychology at Providence for 4 years, earning her bachelor's degree. Since then, Ciara went back to school at Niagara University for another 3 years to earn her master's. Now, Ciara works at D & G Wellness in Williamsville, NY, where she sees clients and also travels around WNY to high schools, explaining the importance of looking out for your teammates' mental health. In this episode, we interview Jack Rockefeller Nichols senior. Jack created the Philanthropy club and has been running it for two years. Jack began by fundraising for PUNT (Pediatric Cancer Collaborative) in his junior year and has led all fundraisers for Nichols since. Jack also involves himself in basketball is a key component on the court. Jack is attending the University of Chicago next fall and plans on majoring in philosophy. Tune in to hear more about Jack.

In this episode, we interview the Social Justice Work of Life interns, Sam Gwitt and Maia Porter and their mentor, Ms. Blue. They go into detail about the work they planned for MLK day as well as Earth day. They are all passionate about their work and are pleased by how much involvement Nichols students have in social justice work. Tune in to hear more detail!
In this episode, we interview RJ Gicewicz, a Nichols alumnus and head coach of the 18U prep hockey team. RJ describes his life growing up in the presence of a professional athlete, as well as his journey through sports, including hockey and football. RJ played D1 ice hockey at St. Lawrence University, where he eventually had to stop playing as medically advised, but was able to be an assistant coach. Since then, he has taken on coaching the SUNY Fredonia, the USHL Fargo Force, and now the Nichols School Prep. Tune in to hear more details on RJ's journey.
In this episode, we interview the senior class of ‘26 presidents, Haleigh Rittling and Avi Dasgupta. Haleigh has been on the student council since her freshman year, and Avi joined in his sophomore year. Haleigh and Avi explain their desire to join the student council and describe their roles. They both explain the difficulty of making a change, which many students don’t realize. Haleigh and Avi are both passionate about their roles on the student council. Tune in to hear more from them.

In this episode, we interview Tommy Maidment, a Nichols Alumni ‘24, Filmmaker and Photographer. Tommy goes into detail about his experience growing up in a creative family and how that has led him to become an artist himself. Tommy also explains his decision to switch from playing D3 soccer at St. Lawrence University to focusing on art at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Tommy explains his projects he is currently working on, and the project he hopes to show at the North Park Theatre this upcoming summer. Tune in to hear more about Tommy.
In this episode, we interview Vonn Dudek, a D1 tennis commit and member of the class of 2026. While attending Nichols, Vonn has been a part of the History Bowl and has competed in Washington, DC for the National Tournament for the past three years. Vonn played three seasons of basketball and one season of baseball in his high school career before ultimately choosing tennis as his sport. In this Episode, we interview Chris Cloutier (Clooch), a professional lacrosse player. While playing professional lacrosse, Chris also served as a gym teacher, history teacher, and lacrosse coach at Nichols. Chris speaks about journey into the game of lacrosse, playing for UNC-Chapel Hill in college, and joining the Professional Lacrosse League (PLL). Chris also goes into detail about his decision to move from the Buffalo Bandits to the Las Vegas Desert Dogs. Good luck to Chris in the next chapter of his life. In this episode, we interview Marty Biron, a retired NHL goalie and current Buffalo Sabres analyst. Marty talks about the experience that led him to the NHL and his love for his current career. He also gives insight to young hockey players who have a passion to play in the NHL. As well as talking about the advancements in technology within hockey since he played. In this episode, we interview Travis Schurr, a sports photographer and videographer heavily involved in the Nichols sports community. Despite never attending the school itself, he’s known by all students, mostly through his Instagram account, which has over 1,000 followers. Travis talks about his experience growing a public image and cultivating a business out of it. What it takes to put out good content and get interest from an online audience. In this episode, we interview Evie and A.J., they begin talking about what led them to run for Student Council President and some of the things they push for in the community. They then talk about what really goes into being the class presidents and the time commitments they put into the community. Evie and A.J. then share how the two of them work together as they both have strong opinions and fight for what they think is right, while also still being able to respect each other for the greater good of the school. In this episode, we interview two players on the Girls Varsity Basketball Team. While facing many hardships this season due to the loss of three key players, the team managed to succeed in the Monsignor Martin League. Two of the main drivers this season were Bri Barr Buday, a senior who has been dominant on the court since she arrived at Nichols, and Madisen Wilson, a junior who took on a large role this year as an offensive threat. Bri and Maddie discuss the ups and downs of the season while giving us background about their love for the game and much more.

In this episode, we interview Mr. Bryggman, a new member of the Nichols community this year. With a rich artistic history and a degree in Cinematics from Binghamton University, Bryggman's experiences led him to eventually pursue a career in visual arts and move to Buffalo, a city filled with art to explore. In this episode, we interview Coach Stone, a member of the Nichols community for over forty years. During Stone's youth, many opportunities in sports now available were off-limits to women. Despite this, after excelling athletically in high school, Stone attended St. Lawrence where she studied Physical Education and played sports. Along her journey, Stone played and took leadership roles in basketball, field hockey, and lacrosse, which eventually led her to be inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. This podcast focuses on the story of Stone as an athlete, while touching on her coaching at Nichols, the shift of "the game" over time, and much more.

Starting off this year, we interviewed Mr. Morris, a.k.a "Jaymo." Mr. Morris teaches many junior and senior students and also serves as the late hall proctor. Although known by students for his multipurpose classroom in Center 63', in this podcast we dive deep into Mr. Morris' passion for restoring cars, remodeling houses, and playing hockey. After discussing his interesting journey from Division 1 hockey to teaching at Nichols, Mr. Morris leaves us with some advice for those looking to pursue their own passion. In this episode we interview Coach Michael Benedict, the head coach for the Boys Prep Hockey Team. Mr. Benedict has played and coached hockey all around the country, including teams such as the Corpus Christi Ice Rays and the Alexandria Blizzard. Shortly after coming back to Buffalo, Benedict came to coach for the Nichols Boys Prep Team. This will be Mr. Benedicts last year at Nichols as he is leaving to coach for the Junior Sabres, a travel hockey team in Buffalo. In this episode, we interview Dr. Harry Cohen, a graduate of the Nichols class of 1973. After graduating from Nichols, Dr. Cohen would go on to study psychology and executive coaching at Cornell University. Not only has Dr. Cohen been a mentor and coached thousands on Heliotropic Leadership, the theme of many of his presentations, but he has also written a book and founded a restaurant. During our conversations with Dr. Cohen, we explore this idea of Heliotropic Leadership along with his journey and experiences in his career.

Congratulations to our Federation Hockey Team for winning the State Championship for the second time in two years. The team, made up of mostly Freshmen and Sophomores, surprised many other teams by beating St. Francis to become the Monsignor Martin Champions. Shortly after, they moved on to states to beat Chaminade. In this episode, we discuss the journeys this team has been through this season and some of the difficulties that they have had to overcome. TJ Bamrick, the captain of the team talks especially about the leadership role that he had on the team this season. In this episode, we interview Henry Chambers and Elise Glahe, the two current co-presidents. We discuss the behind-the-scenes duties of the co-presidents and how much they contribute to our daily schedule. Then, we dive into the lives of Henry and Elise and discuss the topics of sports, clubs, and what the future looks like for each of these seniors. Elise, being a transfer student from Grand Island, shares her story and interests such as swimming. Henry on the other hand, has been at Nichols for a while and is deeply involved in activities such as Prep C Hockey and Investment Club, and more.
During this episode, we interview Linda Ullmark, a recent Division 1 commit to the University of North Carolina for soccer. In this episode, we discuss Linda's love for soccer and the process of choosing which college she wanted to attend. We also hear stories about her past and what it was like to live in Japan. During this episode, we talk with Dr. Ramone Alexander, the first and current Director of Inclusivity and Community Building. After receiving a bachelor's degree in psychology from Columbia and a doctorate in medicine from UB, he came to Nichols in 2016 and taught Algebra. Dr. Alexander talks about the meaning and impact of his work at Nichols and also gives us some life skills and advice for people all around. Jake Zimmer and Charlie Stein are Nichols Alumni of the class of 2010. Andrew Sutherland is an English and film teacher in the Nichols' high school. Dr. Sutherland is known as the most optimistic teacher at Nichols, even in the dire situation he has experienced over the last year. After being diagnosed with the extremely rare disease, DPAM, the Nichols Community is beyond excited to welcome him back to campus. We wish him nothing less than a healthy and quick recovery. Randall is part of the Chinese Exchange Program and arrived at Nichols in 2020.
