Does our value lie in what we can perform and how we can give to others?

In this episode, I tell the story of working with a client who said it feels selfish for her to think about herself. But I challenge you to think about you. The more you can pour into yourself, the more you have for the world.

So how can you be self-FUL? Don't miss this episode to find out!

Want more spaciousness, ease, and calm when it comes to your relationships? OF COURSE! We all do. In this episode, I explore the Let Them concept. It's simple but not always easy. Letting others be exactly who they are at school and in life will give you peace and greater ease, particularly if you identify as a "control freak extraordinaire." Let your brain be your brain and your emotions be your emotions.

Let them.

In Part 2 of How to Create Habits that Last, using the research of Dr. Kelly McGonigal's work (https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/faculty-research/faculty/kelly-m-mcgonigal), I emphasize why coming from a growth mindset is the key to changing any habit.

In today’s podcast I want to focus and share some of the intuitive practices that have not only helped me at school but in my life as well. This is when I turn to Francesca McCartney’s work on intuition.

I highly recommend McCartney’s book “Body of Health” and the grounding practice I share today comes from this book. In this episode, I am going to share visualizations that I use to ground myself.

What is grounding and how is it beneficial?

  • A strong grounding connection provides a stable base from which I can feel safe, centered, aware and clear.

  • I know when I am grounded because my inner voice is accessible.

  • My decisions are clear because I trust myself. In essence, I belong to myself when I am grounded. Tune in to find out how to ground yourself in and out of school.

Do you belong? To what? To whom? For years, I was a pleaser. I flexed and bent myself to "FIT" into what I thought others wanted of me. But I was a liar. No one got the authentic me. I was so caught up in what I thought others wanted from me, I forgot to belong to myself. In this episode, we do a deep dive into how to belong to YOURSELF. In Episode 81, I gave you the first part of how to self-coach yourself in any challenging relationship and that first part is to take responsibility for your thoughts and feelings about this person.

(Do not underestimate this step, my friends! Responsibility means getting out of victim mentality and it is HUGE!)

Step 2 is to INTENTIONALLY decide to be in a relationship with this person. You heard me. You need to deliberately decide to be in relationship with them.

To decide to be in a relationship, ask yourself:
1. Who do I want to be? (NOT WHO DO YOU WANT THEM TO BE, who do YOU want to be?)

  1. How do you want to behave?

  2. How do you want to think about this person?

  3. How do you want to act?

There is SO MUCH power, especially at school, to decide that you will be a CERTAIN way no matter how someone else acts.

So Step 1 is doing your own work of taking responsibility.

Step 2 is deciding ahead of time who you want to be so that you are not a helpless victim without any power with this person.

Step 3: Realize that everyone gets to act exactly as they want. It is EXHAUSTING to even think we can control others and we know we can’t.

To repair any relationship, only one person needs to clean up his/her side of the street.

Ready to clean up yours? Don't miss this episode which is right on time for teachers and the school year!

Teachers, are you celebrating YOU?

This bonus episode is not your typical gratitude episode.

In this episode, I remind all teachers to celebrate what is going right-what can you celebrate about you?

What makes you, well, YOU?

I am so grateful for this mind thought work and I celebrate YOU. I celebrate your wins and losses, the tough moments, and yep, the fails.

But please be sure you are celebrating yourselves!

In this episode, we are going to look at WHY a relationship at school is tough and how you can identify if you have certain thoughts about a person at your school or in your life that no longer serve you.

You'll learn:

• How to identify your thoughts;

• The one action we all do to help identify if you have thoughts about a colleague;

• What taking responsibility for your thoughts really looks like;

• Why thought responsibility is essential to staying in your power;

By owning our own thinking, we can ask ourselves these very important questions: What am I thinking? What am I feeling in this relationship that is creating challenge? Notice it. That is your homework.

Can you just be with it?

In Episode 80, I describe some real life scenarios that I have experienced or seen in classes and ask you, "Do you have a Thought Plan for this?" Scenario: A student pulls out his/her phone without permission. Scenario: A student refuses to sit in his seat and says "This f****ing class is BS," and leaves class without permission. Sound familiar? The point is you can prepare for that. You can create a thought plan for yourself. Thought preparation, like all of our preps, involves preparation and practice. Episode 79 starts with one simple question: Would you date yourself right now?

Would you?

If you are a teacher who is looking for a partner who is kind, are you speaking to yourself with kindness?

If you want a partner who is FUN, ask yourself, "Am I fun? How do I know that I am fun? Do I have fun with myself?"

If the answer is "yes," great. But if the answer is "no," keep listening to this episode for ways to date yourself, ways of seeing yourself with new eyes, ways of evaluating what you have to bring to the table.

In Episode 77 "How to Slow Down & Shut Up" I show you why it is ESSENTIAL to listen to the words you are using.

The easiest way to do this?

The trick is PAYING ATTENTION TO our thoughts and changing our words to SERVE us is to notice them.

This episode reminds you that your thoughts are the super-highways to anything you want.

And language, our WORDS, make up our thoughts.

Remember, if you want to teach your mind, you are always your own first student so show up and pay attention to how you talk to yourself.

So, get quiet and pay attention to your thoughts and words.

In this episode, you will learn:

• why the word "I want" or "I need" create lack and scarcity

• why taking a breath of 3 before you speak can give your mind "think time" before you speak

• how changing your words to "I can," "I choose" and "I create" is a game changer.

This episode also references episode 76 "Rejection Therapy." Want to know more about Rejection Therapy? Tune into the previous episode to find out more about the big moves I am making at The Chrissy Concept.

Rejection Therapy? What is that?

In this episode, I talk about my own journey to fall more in love with my own sense of rejection and fear as I apply the tools I am learning from actively seeking rejection in my own life and in my business.

My inspiration comes from Jason Comely and Jia Jiang who shared his own powerful journey with rejection in a TedX that you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vZXgApsPCQ.

Impressed by Jia, in this episode, I share how I have started to create a closer relationship with rejection by simply asking a question. I am able to collect a no and it doesn’t kill me. The fear of what people will think, the fear of a no, the fear of disapproval: it no longer hurts me as it may once have.

But these things don’t have to be big asks for us to experience big change.

Asking for what you will change your life.

So where can you ask for what you want?

Where can you feel nervous about a rejection but ask it any way?

Enjoy this episode about fear and rejection.

Every wonder what our principals are actually thinking about? In Episode 75, I am in conversation with high school principal Ingrid Gustavson.

In this episode we discuss the highs and lows of her job, the way she models and cultivates balance in her work, and the pitfalls of trying to "do it all" as either administration or faculty.

Ingrid describes the importance of teacher time and "working around the edges" of our daily time and reminds us claim time for ourselves because, "there will always be one more paper to grade."

Ingrid also describes how she says teachers have come through Covid, why and how they are frontline workers, and how we rebuild mental health for students and teachers. The key, says Ingrid, is play and her suggestions might surprise you. Enjoy this conversation!

Ingrid joined the Rowland Hall community in summer 2016. For three years before her move, Ingrid served as director of studies at Darrow School on the New York-Massachusetts border overseeing all things academic, from curriculum development and scheduling to faculty and student support. Prior to Darrow, Ingrid worked at three schools in California including, most recently, Sage Hill School in Orange County. Ingrid wore many hats there over 11 years, including dean of faculty and history department chair. She has also taught World History, AP Art History, and French, and coached volleyball and basketball. Ingrid and her family enjoy exploring Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas. They especially love road trips, hiking, birding, and skiing.

Want more trust, a greater class culture and a better vibe? It is possible to create it NOW, even when the year is underway. In this episode, I lean on the amazing Brene Brown and her work on vulnerability for teachers.

I describe my "a-ha" moments from two of Brene's talks: her keynote address at South by Southwest for Educators (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVD8YRgA-ck) and in an interview on her Daring Classrooms Hub (https://brenebrown.com/dc-interview-series/).

In this episode, you'll see that it is never too late to create vulnerability and safety for your students by doing your own work with it first. Where do you need to feel like you belong at school? Where do you feel like you need support in your learning and career? How can you be more like "a turtle without its shell"?

Hard days at school actually do not exist without your mind. It's true! The hard or bad is not made by the day. The hard or bad is made by our thoughts about the day.

In Episode 66, I am in conversation with Mary Granick about what happens when teachers are faced with trauma.

Mary and I recorded this interview soon after the the May 2022, school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas and while we don't go into detail about school shootings, Mary does help us understand as teachers what happens in our bodies when we, as teachers are faced with trauma.

In this episode, we discuss:

• why it is important for teachers to seek help themselves when faced with a traumatic event;

• how trauma makes it impossible to think clearly in class;

• how a pre-organized emotional lesson plan for yourself can help you in the moment.

• why caring for our students and ourselves in the moment is not only enough, it's essential.

Mary Toth Granick is a licensed marriage and family therapist who currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mary is licensed to practice in New Mexico and California, and has clients from both states in her in-person on online private practice. Mary has been a therapist for over 25 years. Before that, Mary received her Masters Degree in Education and taught in middle school, high school, and community college for over 10 years. She taught English, History and writing before making a mid life career change. Mary currently works with adult individuals and couples, with a focus on somatic and trauma informed therapeutic approaches.

I made up the word "Successing" for Episode 65 to help us remember that that success in teaching is messy. Successing means trying, failing, adjusting, trying, failing and learning.
Successing also means asking for help when you need it and receiving that help.
Successing means giving yourself a break and letting go of perfectionism.

Episode 63 is a great conversation with Laura Cheney, an a secondary academic math coach in public school in Utah. Laura and I spoke last spring before teachers left for the summer as she notes the exhaustion and fatigue that teachers in her district were feeling post Covid.

Laura also describes the challenges of going from working with students to working with adults and how each are unique. Laura brings heart and passion to her work in Math and she is also  the proud mother of two boys

In this episode, I tell the story of one of my teaching clients called into the principal's office and her thoughts about the situation.

This event actually helped her:

• Crystallize her WHY: why she was a teacher

• Made her realize that she was not at school for the adults but to server her students

• Empowered her to keep calm and carry on with decisiveness and power.

So what is your teaching WHY? Who are you in the classroom to serve? Why do you do what you do? The answers could change the way you view your job, your week, and your year.

Think self-pressure is working for you in the classroom and raising your game? Think again.

In this episode you'll learn:

• Why putting the pressure on yourself increases stress;

• Why pressure keeps you in a spin cycle of "not enough"

• How if you feel pressure at school, most likely you are creating it for yourself at home;

• How self-pressuring leads to you beating yourself up, not teaching better;

Compassion is actually the key to feeling better at school and in life. Can you give yourself just a bit of a break? After this episode, you will.

Think students can't tell what's going on with us and the challenges we face day in and day out in the classroom? Think again.

In this episode, 11th grade student Isabelle, and 8th grader James, describe what qualities create a truly great teacher and describe some bad teaching moments they have experienced in their education.

James Anthony is an 8th grader in Cincinnati, Ohio. James loves planes (and can tell you the plane you are traveling on just by looking at it), travel, and soccer. Born in Chertsy, England, James began his international travel career early as he accompanied his mother (as he was still in utero) to Florence, Italy and Amsterdam when his head was roughly the size of a Dutch tulip.

Isabelle Anthony is a junior this year and is an avid actor, ballet dancer, art enthusiast, and lover of flowers. Izzy can be found studying for her AP classes, speaking French, dancing to Taylor Swift, and loves to roam Manhattan with her cousin.

These two dynamic students remind us:

-the characteristics that make a great teacher

-the qualities that they see that create a "bonded" classroom

-how teacher energy affects learning

-how technology can play a positive and negative role in the classroom

-why it feels so important to have teachers ask about student lives outside of school;

-how disappointing it can feel to students when teachers care more about the curriculum than student thoughts.

As we listen to these two student voices, we are also reminded that they can see (and feel) the challenges that teachers face. As James reflects on the childrens of teaching after Covid, "I feel like a lot of the children have not been paying enough attention during remote learning...and so it must be hard for teachers to get children back into the learning phase.”

Irish lovers in Teacherland, you are in for a treat! Today I am in conversation with Aoife Crowne who teaches traditional Irish Gaelic in Bantry in southern Ireland.

Aoife and I discuss the mindset she uses each day to motivate her 16 year-olds to learn Gaelic and how she battles time in the go-go-go Back to School pace alive and well even in a small town.

Aoife also describes what she would do if she was Minister of Education in Ireland for a day and could fix some of the problems that Irish teachers face.

Welcome.

You are VERY important. You are the first responders of our culture. I believe in you.

You are a professional..

You are changing lives.

If Back to school is rough right now, I want to teach you this fast but mighty tool that I use in meditation and that I learned from my meditation teacher and you can use it many times throughout the day at quick intervals.

Imagine yourself zooming out of your school day. Zoom back.

You’re hanging out with the sky rather than the clouds moving through the sky.

In meditation, the feelings that come up and even each breath we take are the clouds. But you remain in the sky.

For you now, at school, step back, zoom out and hang out in the sky.

Look down on your worries or annoying moments recently about back to school: that unkind word you heard a colleague say, that administrator who seems incompetent, the time you think you don’t have, the forms to fill out, the meetings to attend, mandatory videos to watch, the students you have: they are the clouds.

Simply watch the clouds float by. Just hang out in the sky itself. Let your mind rest in that blue turquoise and all the other school stuff floats by.

We are hanging out with the sky itself. Watch things come and go, those clouds passing through the sky below you, not getting too interested or focused on it. You are just relaxing into the blue, into the awareness.

You can come back to this practice many times a day.

“Small moments, many times.”

In this conversation, Mary explains how teaching has been politicized with often confusing and threatening messages for teachers. Mary also gives advice for teachers about how to bring the love and energy they first brought to the job.

Today we are going to talk about a tool that will help you deal with that person in your life that might be hard to love: zoo animal them! What is that? When faced with this person, transform yourself into a documentary filmmaker or researcher and get so present that you notice the person in front of you as if they were a rare species or specimen.

When done in a respectful present way to see the humanity in someone else, to find the rare treasures in another, using this tool to “zoo animal” is a first step to emotional repair and connection. You can even use this kind of curiosity and awe on yourself! What do you notice when you see yourself as a rare species?

In This Episode I share:

  • How to use this mindset strategy to appreciate the people in your life who push your buttons

  • How putting on your inner scientist to notice someone else will help you stay present to yourself

  • How you can “zoo animal” anyone in your life and keep some emotional neutrality with yourself.

Today we are going to talk about how to accept others just as they are and find some detachment even in conflict when you believe your colleague or administrator is “going off the rails.”

In this episode, I remind all of our brains that resisting reality and always yearning for other people and our lives to be different creates suffering for us. Using the concept of , “Yep, that’s ‘on brand’ for her/for him” can give you just a bit of space so that you can watch the events in front of you unfold.

In This Episode I share:

  • Why you can’t change others but you can stay in charge of your thoughts, feelings, and actions.

  • How to stay present with the moment in front of you without wanting to change it

  • How noticing how others show up can help you stay connected to yourself

My guest today is Ryan Hoglund. Ryan is the Director of Ethical Education at Rowland Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah.

This conversation spotlights May for Men in Education as Ryan talks about how teaching was his antidote to the "spirit murder" he experienced in his brief career in finance.

In this conversation, Ryan reminds us why it's so important to model reflective masculinity for his students--masculinity that can be gentle, vulnerable and centered.

He also describes what he loves about education and why he likes to challenge stereotypes as we chat about the ways education can be gendered.

Welcome back to part two on my series of how to ask yourself high quality questions. In this episode I give more examples of powerful questions to ask yourself. I also describe why taking responsibility for your thoughts and feeling your feelings is the key to change.

In this episode, I also describe how I use the coaching model to see that thoughts determine feelings which drive our actions that create all of our results. If you want excellent results in your life, take a look at your thoughts. If you want to look at a situation in a different way, redirect your brain to choose a different thought.

Whether you are wrapping up the end of your school year or looking ahead to create whatever we want on summer vacation, use these high quality questions as powerful tools to move you forward and redirect your thoughts.

In This Episode I share:

  • Why it’s essential to take responsibility for our thoughts and feelings instead of living in “default mode”
  • How thoughts drive feelings and feelings drive actions
  • Four powerful questions to ask yourself daily

Let’s talk about fatigue. We’re tired. Some of us are so tired, it feels like a deep, bone tired. We’ve been through Covid and all sorts of hybrid/online teaching modalities. I see it in the teachers in the faculty room and in my clients: an exhaustion that feels physical, deep, and visceral that only rest will cure.

In this episode you will learn:

  • How to check in with yourself about the difference between physical exhaustion and “thought distortion tired”
  • Where thought distortion tired comes from
  • What you can do when your brain indulges in this kind of mind fatigue

Welcome to Teacher Talk Episode 4 ,which I like to call the “I DID IT!” Self-appreciation episode.

As I record this, it’s Teacher Appreciation Week in our world of education and so it got me thinking about self-appreciation. As children and as young children we celebrated  A LOT. If you walk into any lower elementary classroom, you can hear little voices exclaiming, “I DID IT.”

As teachers we offer that to our students, but we rarely do it. So today we’re talking about quick ways that you can appreciate yourself.
