In this episode “Plottin’ and Schemin’ for Success,” Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz unpack strategic planning as a form of plotting and scheming—not as sabotage, but as intentional design toward your personal and professional goals. They reflect on how, early in their careers (for Dave, in the military), success was more about following a prescribed path, but as their ambitions grew, so did the necessity for deliberate, thoughtful navigation—including researching culture, gauging expectations, and modulating their approach to others. They caution that others may misinterpret your ambition as threat or rivalry, so awareness and emotional intelligence are critical in how you present your journey. Ultimately, the message is: be intentional, plan strategically, but also be adaptive and considerate of the context in which you operate.JONSOP Website: https://jonsop.comEmail: jonsopdr2@gmail.com Dr. Joe Hamlett Email: dr.joehamlett@gmail.com Website: http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoehamlett/ Link In Bio: http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com/linkinbio/ Dr. Dave Peltz Email: PeltzCS@outlook.com Website: https://www.PeltzConsultingServices.com/services LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-david-peltz-phd/ Link In Bio: https://tinyurl.com/DrDavePeltz Music intro & Outro provided by David T. In the podcast Journeys of Not So Ordinary People S4E188 “Me Time,” Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz explore how intentional moments of solitude and activity outside of daily routines can recharge one’s sense of self. They note that “me time” doesn’t need to be elaborate or expensive—things like walks, museums, or simply being a passenger during travel offer clarity and refreshment. Joe shares how an impromptu trip away, disconnected from work and devices, brought him peace in ways he hadn’t expected. The hosts also emphasize shifting perspective: revisiting familiar places later in life, doing things differently (not driving, being present), and treating small, local adventures with the same respect as bucket-list trips. The upshot is that carving out even small amounts of “me time,” away from obligations and distractions, is essential for personal growth, emotional balance, and renewed energy.JONSOP Website: https://jonsop.comEmail: jonsopdr2@gmail.com Dr. Joe Hamlett Email: dr.joehamlett@gmail.com Website: http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoehamlett/ Link In Bio: http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com/linkinbio/ Dr. Dave Peltz Email: PeltzCS@outlook.com Website: https://www.PeltzConsultingServices.com/services LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-david-peltz-phd/ Link In Bio: https://tinyurl.com/DrDavePeltz Music intro & Outro provided by David T. In this episode of Journeys of Not So Ordinary People, Maya Carpenter suggest that rejection—though painful and inevitable—can become a powerful ally rather than an adversary. She emphasizes that the key lies in shifting our mindset: instead of internalizing rejection and allowing it to define us, we can use it as a springboard for growth. Maya outlines practical tools like acknowledging and processing emotions, expressing them (through writing or voice), practicing empathy both toward ourselves and others, and communicating the rejection when appropriate. She also highlights how leaders need to cultivate awareness of how their actions and communications might unintentionally reject or discourage others. Ultimately, the goal is to prevent rejection from becoming a constrainer of identity, and instead see it as part of the path forward.

In this episode the Journeys Of Not So Ordinary People podcast, Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz introduce the concept of the project-management mindset as a powerful framework for personal, professional, and career development—not just for organizational initiatives. They emphasize the importance of breaking down large goals (like completing a degree, renovating a room, planning a trip, updating your resume, or networking) into manageable, sequential tasks with clear milestones, timelines, and needed resources. Writing down these steps, celebrating incremental wins, and building in contingency planning (e.g., “what-if” scenarios like layoffs or industry disruption) enables one to stay motivated, adaptable, and proactive. Such a mindset transforms overwhelming ambitions into structured, achievable projects that move you forward with clarity and confidence. Effective project management hinges on anticipating disruptions and maintaining momentum through clear task prioritization and coordinated timelines, reinforcing the value of a structured, resilient approach in any endeavor.JONSOP https://jonsop.comjonsopdr2@gmail.com Dr. Joe Hamlett dr.joehamlett@gmail.com http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoehamlett/ http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com/linkinbio/ Dr. Dave Peltz PeltzCS@outlook.com https://www.PeltzConsultingServices.com/services https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-david-peltz-phd/ https://tinyurl.com/DrDavePeltz Music intro & Outro provided by David T. In this episode the Journeys Of Not So Ordinary People podcast, Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz explore the concept of stretching beyond our habitual comfort zones—whether in personal life, professional development, or leadership. Through vivid, relatable stories—like attending a loud concert after years of avoiding it, or stepping into a large networking event despite being an introvert—they show how consciously challenging comfortable routines can yield unexpected rewards such as new relationships, fresh opportunities, and personal growth. They emphasize starting small—perhaps with a smile, light small talk, or choosing one slightly uncomfortable action to take—and then building from there. The conversation also touches on the importance of self-awareness in recognizing when "comfort" becomes stagnation, the value of surrounding yourself with constructive challengers instead of "yes-people," and the power of adopting lifelong learning and an open mind toward new people, technologies, or perspectives. Ultimately, they remind listeners that while pushing through discomfort feels hard at first, the payoff is increased confidence, momentum, and the satisfying realization that “I can do this.”JONSOP https://jonsop.comjonsopdr2@gmail.com Dr. Joe Hamlett dr.joehamlett@gmail.com http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoehamlett/ http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com/linkinbio/ Dr. Dave Peltz PeltzCS@outlook.com https://www.PeltzConsultingServices.com/services https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-david-peltz-phd/ https://tinyurl.com/DrDavePeltz Music intro & Outro provided by David T. In this episode of Journeys of No So Ordinary People podcast Dr. Dave and Dr. Joe have a conversation with military spouse and Gold Star spouse Krista Anderson as she guides listeners through the vital but often overlooked practice of planning for the unexpected. Drawing on deeply personal experience—losing her husband, a decorated Green Beret, in combat—she emphasizes the importance of preemptively understanding and organizing essential logistics: everything from knowing how to shut off the main water valve and access household accounts, to ensuring vital documents like passwords, usernames, death benefits, and last wishes are accessible to loved ones. She encourages couples to approach tough topics like funeral preferences and estate details in a lighthearted, proactive way—like making planning part of a “date night.” Christa also underscores the value of consolidating all necessary information—bills, asset details, financial account logins, powers of attorney, wills, trust arrangements for children, and emergency contacts—into a centralized binder or cloud folder. Her practical advice extends to leveraging resources such as JAG offices, aid societies, and free estate-planning tools to simplify these preparations and reduce the burden on survivors.JONSOP https://jonsop.comjonsopdr2@gmail.com Krista Andersonhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/krista-s-anderson/https://www.theunquietprofessional.org/krista@theunquietprofessional.orgDr. Joe Hamlett dr.joehamlett@gmail.com http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoehamlett/ http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com/linkinbio/ Dr. Dave Peltz PeltzCS@outlook.com https://www.PeltzConsultingServices.com/services https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-david-peltz-phd/ https://tinyurl.com/DrDavePeltz Music intro & Outro provided by David T. In this episode, “Applying Yesterdays Lessons,” Drs. Joe Hamlett and Dave Peltz explore how personal and professional growth stems not just from immediate experiences, but from reflections that surface days, weeks, or even months later. They stress the importance of presence and active engagement—being fully attentive in meetings, conversations, and life’s moments enables those subtle insights to register. Putting pen to paper, or debriefing with others, helps capture and consolidate these lessons. They also remind us that wisdom can come from our own past—even from mistakes we didn’t experience firsthand—but saw in others. Ultimately, by taking stock, being present, and revisiting past experiences, we build a toolbox of insights ready to be applied when the moment calls.JONSOP https://jonsop.comjonsopdr2@gmail.com Dr. Joe Hamlett dr.joehamlett@gmail.com http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoehamlett/ http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com/linkinbio/ Dr. Dave Peltz PeltzCS@outlook.com https://www.PeltzConsultingServices.com/services https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-david-peltz-phd/ https://tinyurl.com/DrDavePeltz Music intro & Outro provided by David T. In this enlightening episode, host Dr. Dave Peltz and Dr. Joe Hamlett welcome guest Ernelita “Ernie” Dacumos—an international speaker, coach, and former healthcare professional—to explore the essence of self-confidence in women. Ernie defines confidence as knowing your worth, capabilities, and intrinsic value—without needing to compare yourself or seek approval—especially in a world saturated with social media’s idealized images. She candidly shares her own transformation from a shy, insecure immigrant battling culture shock, perfectionism, and imposter syndrome, to becoming a confident introvert through self-discovery, reflection, boundary-setting, and embracing one’s unique strengths. Ernie also addresses the often-overlooked dynamic of women feeling they must compete rather than collaborate, and offers practical advice on fostering healthy relationships among women and allies: learn who you are, reflect on progress, set boundaries, and accept support without compromising authenticity.JONSOP https://jonsop.comjonsopdr2@gmail.com Ernelita Dacumosernieodacumos@gmail.comhttps://confidentlyyou.club/Book: https://a.co/d/dkgy4JYDr. Joe Hamlett dr.joehamlett@gmail.com http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoehamlett/ http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com/linkinbio/ Dr. Dave Peltz PeltzCS@outlook.com https://www.PeltzConsultingServices.com/services https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-david-peltz-phd/ https://tinyurl.com/DrDavePeltz Music intro & Outro provided by David T. In this episode of Journeys of Not So Ordinary People, host Dr. Dave Peltz and Dr. Joe Hamlett chat with Tai Cochran—affectionately dubbed the “PiMP” (a playful twist on PMP, or Project Management Professional). Tai shares that the most critical lesson he’s learned over nearly two decades in project leadership—particularly in public sector work—is to never neglect the people involved. That means engaging those affected by process changes, ensuring cross‑functional input, and securing executive and stakeholder sponsorship to avoid silos and resistance. She emphasizes servant leadership, thoughtful communication, and tools like project charters, RACI charts, communication matrices, and risk registers to build clarity, accountability, and flexibility (including buffers for unexpected delays). Tai’s practical wisdom is grounded in stakeholder alignment, transparent governance, and proactive risk management—strategies that empower teams to stay on schedule and on budget, while delivering meaningful and sustainable solutions.JONSOP https://jonsop.comjonsopdr2@gmail.com Tai Cochranwww.herpm.com. https://www.linkedin.com/in/tai-cochran/info@herpm.comDr. Joe Hamlett dr.joehamlett@gmail.com http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoehamlett/ http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com/linkinbio/ Dr. Dave Peltz PeltzCS@outlook.com https://www.PeltzConsultingServices.com/services https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-david-peltz-phd/ https://tinyurl.com/DrDavePeltz Music intro & Outro provided by David T. In this episode of the Journeys Of Not So Ordinary People, hosts Dr. Dave Peltz and Dr. Joe Hamlett sit down with leadership expert Carlee Wolfe to explore the concept of “building for the pivot” in personal and professional life. Carlee explains that genuine readiness for change begins with a foundation of curiosity—continually asking “What’s next? What’s possible?”—coupled with the courage to embrace new opportunities, even small ones like jotting down a goal or reaching out to a friend. By actively engaging with new experiences and reflecting on past lessons, we cultivate the internal “muscles” needed to pivot effectively, whether change is self‑initiated or unexpected. They underscore how these small, cumulative actions—paired with clarity around what truly matters—can empower resilience and open doors to meaningful growth and transformation.

They emphasize that true progress lies beyond the comfort zone, illustrating this with personal examples like overcoming stage fright through drama classes and push-ups via military training. They advocate starting small—taking that first step toward your goals, whether learning a new skill or speaking up in a meeting—and building momentum through incremental achievements. In this episode of "Journeys of Not So Ordinary People," hosts Dr. Dave Peltz and Dr. Joe Hamlett discuss the "Landscape Of Higher Education," with Dr. Richmond Hill who shares his thoughts on the current state of higher education, particularly from the perspective of community colleges. He highlights a period of transition and challenge, emphasizing the need for institutions to rethink their approach to serving students, who now range widely in age and seek upward mobility through education, whether for a first degree, upskilling, or reskilling. The conversation touches on the questioning of higher education's return on investment due to student debt, and a noticeable shift in student enrollment towards skilled trades, information technology, and cybersecurity, often at little to no cost through state-funded programs. Dr. Hill also emphasizes the renewed focus on the original purpose of community colleges, providing accessible and relevant education, and the benefits of community college transfers to four-year institutions, including cost savings and better student persistence. The discussion concludes with the importance of open-mindedness, nimbleness, and adapting to changing student needs and technological advancements like AI in delivering education.JONSOP https://jonsop.comjonsopdr2@gmail.com Dr. Richmond Hillhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/richmondhill/Dr. Joe Hamlett dr.joehamlett@gmail.com http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoehamlett/ http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com/linkinbio/ Dr. Dave Peltz PeltzCS@outlook.com https://www.PeltzConsultingServices.com/services https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-david-peltz-phd/ https://tinyurl.com/DrDavePeltz Music intro & Outro provided by David T. In this episode, hosts Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz use their own remarkable story—collaborating successfully for nearly nine years and over 170 podcast episodes before ever meeting in person—to explore the critical balance between virtual efficiency and human connection. While they champion the effectiveness and cost-benefits of remote work, they argue that virtual interactions have limits. The core message is that intentional, physical meetings, even if infrequent, are vital for taking relationships to the next level. The simple act of sharing a meal, a handshake, or an in-person conversation builds a deeper layer of trust, understanding, and rapport that technology cannot fully replicate. For leaders and professionals, the takeaway is to leverage virtual tools for productivity but to strategically create opportunities for face-to-face interaction to humanize colleagues, strengthen team bonds, and foster a more profound and resilient professional community.JONSOP https://jonsop.comjonsopdr2@gmail.com Dr. Joe Hamlett dr.joehamlett@gmail.com http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoehamlett/ http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com/linkinbio/ Dr. Dave Peltz PeltzCS@outlook.com https://www.PeltzConsultingServices.com/services https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-david-peltz-phd/ https://tinyurl.com/DrDavePeltz Music intro & Outro provided by David T. In this insightful episode of "Journeys of Not So Ordinary People," hosts Dr. Dave Peltz and Dr. Joe Hamlett are joined by guest Bridgett McGowan, a professional speaker and publisher, to delve into the crucial topic of "Breaking The Pattern." Bridget defines this as boldly rejecting the status quo and the self-imposed limitations—be it mindset, habits, or fear—that hold individuals back. It's about consciously deciding "enough is enough," stopping the rehearsal of limitations, and starting to live out one's possibilities by rewriting personal scripts and raising one's own standards. Bridget emphasizes that breaking patterns isn't accidental but requires a combination of awareness, courage, and action. She outlines a process: recognizing the unhelpful loop, being brutally honest that it's not working, making a firm decision to change now, taking action (even small steps), and then consistently repeating the new, desired pattern. Key themes include the power of tiny, consistent steps over grand gestures (referencing "Atomic Habits"), understanding that confidence is a consequence of action rather than a prerequisite, and the importance of showing up authentically, with purpose, even when scared. Overcoming "analysis paralysis" (which Bridget calls "fear wearing a lab coat") by setting deadlines and taking immediate, small actions is also highlighted as crucial for moving forward. The episode powerfully encourages listeners to stop waiting, take control of their narrative, and actively build the future they desire.JONSOP https://jonsop.comjonsopdr2@gmail.com Bridgett McGowenhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/bmcgowen/https://www.connectwithb.comDr. Joe Hamlett dr.joehamlett@gmail.com http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoehamlett/ http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com/linkinbio/ Dr. Dave Peltz PeltzCS@outlook.com https://www.PeltzConsultingServices.com/services https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-david-peltz-phd/ https://tinyurl.com/DrDavePeltz Music intro & Outro provided by David T. In this episode of "Journeys of Not So Ordinary People," Dr. Dave Peltz and Dr. Joe Hamlett speak with guest Jeni Yelton who offers a "Tangible View Of Purpose," breaking down the often abstract concept into three distinct, understandable levels using a Starbucks barista analogy. Level one purpose is transactional, like working purely for a paycheck to meet basic needs. Level two involves finding purpose in relationships, company culture, and a sense of belonging, which is more fulfilling but still self-focused and vulnerable to change. The most profound, Level three, is achieved when individuals understand their work as serving something larger than themselves, making an impact beyond their immediate experience, even if unseen—like a barista enabling new business connections. The hosts and Jenny emphasize that discovering and living this deeper purpose requires ongoing self-reflection on one's core values, natural strengths, and who one wishes to serve, allowing individuals to find fulfillment across various roles and navigate life's transitions with resilience, ultimately encouraging listeners to actively "make a turn" in their journey towards a more purpose-driven life.JONSOP https://jonsop.comjonsopdr2@gmail.com Jeni Yeltonhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jeniyelton/Dr. Joe Hamlett dr.joehamlett@gmail.com http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoehamlett/ http:/www.leading2changeconsulting.com/linkinbio/ Dr. Dave Peltz PeltzCS@outlook.com https://www.PeltzConsultingServices.com/services https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-david-peltz-phd/ https://tinyurl.com/DrDavePeltz Music intro & Outro provided by David T. She emphasizes that executive presence is not about superficial polish but a blend of competence, confidence, and clarity that shapes how others perceive an individual. Dianna highlights her coaching process, which involves observing clients in different environments, gathering feedback from peers, subordinates, and superiors, and providing targeted, actionable suggestions to enhance their presence. She also underscores the importance of synthesizing complex information into concise, persuasive communication to project authority and leadership. On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Greener Grass. Many of us have probably heard about the grass being greener on the other side, however, we would like to caution you. As much as we would like to believe the grass is greener on the other side, more than likely we are not seeing a complete picture. Often times we only see the surface, which in many cases can be misleading and unfortunately, we do not learn the truth until it is too late. We recommend that you do your due diligence when considering going somewhere that appears to be a better place to be. Of course, we know that you will not be able to uncover many of the things that are not immediately visible, however, we expect you to dig deep enough to where you are comfortable to make an informed decision. We also encourage you to discuss the opportunity with others just so that you have perspective that is phased or enticed by the opportunity and therefore they may see beyond just the surface. In either case, make sure you take the appropriate time to consider before making your final decision.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic We Are Better Together. When we refer to we are better together, we are speaking in terms of working on a team or in a group and the benefits of associated with that dynamic. Dave would also like to think that the more we work together the better chance we have of complementing one another. As we have mentioned it many times before, we often think we do things alone, but the reality is that we often have to rely on others to get things accomplished. Although we are typically responsible for the end results that does not mean that it is solely up to us to complete the task alone. As mentioned throughout the episode, in many cases there is possibly a standout person or persons on the team, but the reality is that it takes all of working together in order for us to be successful. Remember it is not about only us winning, but rather it is about all of us winning together.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz bring on a very special guest Caren Cooper. During this episode Caren Cooper is going to tell about her experiences with trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Many of us have probably heard that saying in reference to you or someone else. For the most part many of us can relate to that expression because many of us have been put in that position at one time another in our lives. with that said, what is most important is the fact that we must learn to celebrate our uniqueness rather than trying to fit in. We should also remember embrace our uniqueness, because know is like you. Even as a kid we were taught that we had to conform to get a long rather than celebrate and embrace who we truly are. Although we recognize it is easier said than done, we must make an attempt to be who we are. This all starts with self-worth and self-love. We must start with believing in who we are rather than believing who others want us to believe we are.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Defining Your Destination. What does defining your destination really mean? As we have mentioned on previous episodes, defining your destination starts with defining what success means to you, identifying your goals, critical self-reflection, flexibility and commitment. Of course, this list is not the end all to be all, but rather a good place to start. Also, as we have mentioned in previous episodes, even if you were provided with a successful blueprint used by someone else, the reality is that you will not be able to follow the exact same path. Most importantly is the fact that if you do not define your own destination, someone will likely do it for you and in most cases you will not like the destination they have chosen for you. Not saying that if you define your destination, you will reach that destination without any trials or tribulations, but rather if you have a destination in sight, it is much easier to establish a plan b, c or d if needed. Remember defining your destination is up to you, make sure you are being intentional about where you are headed. It is your responsibility to choose your destination.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Unplugged. As we have mentioned on several previous episodes is the fact is that we all need to unplug in order to recharge or batteries so that we remain effective. What we recommend is that you define what being unplugged looks like for you. Some of unplug by removing ourselves from all electronic devices, whereas some of us use designated hours in the day to unplug from certain electronic devices. Some of us use a combination of relaxation methods and electronic devices to unplug. No matter what method you use, be sure it meets your needs and not someone else's needs of being unplugged. In many cases, it is very difficult to completely unplug from electronic devices, however, it does not mean that you cannot define what unplugging means to you and how to best unplug based on your own circumstances. In other words, choose your method of unplugging based on your own needs and not the needs of others.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Breaking Out Of The Box. To begin with, as mentioned in the episode, understanding being in a box is important. Many of us go through life not really understanding that we are in a box, not to say that it is a bad thing, but rather accepting that you are in box to some degree. The next step is to determine whether or not you are ok with being in box. And lastly, if you have determined that you do not want to be in a box designed by someone else, what steps do you need to take to get out of that box. It should also be noted that sometimes being in a particular box may be a means to an end, therefore accepting that position may not necessarily be a bad thing. One of the most important things to remember in reference to breaking out of the box is the fact that you can choose to be in control of whether or not you remain in the box.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Supporting Your Network. In previous episodes we have discussed being the beneficiaries of support from others, but we have not talked much about the importance of supporting your network in the same way. Often times, we get caught up in what we need and don't necessarily think about the needs of others. On this episode we discuss the importance of building relationships so that you are better equipped to assist others with their personal and professional development. It should be noted that the expectation is not to develop a whole new strategy about how you assist others, but rather, making sure you are keeping others in mind as you develop and grow. It should also be noted, that in many cases it does not take an elaborate scheme to assist, but rather an intent to support others. How can you support your network?

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Communication. As identified in the podcast, communication encompasses so many aspects of interacting and connecting with others. With that said, we must mention that due to the many methods of communication available, we should try to determine which method is most effective for you. Also, what comes to mind is when does our communication methods become a detriment rather than a positive interaction. Many years ago, there was typically one major method of immediate communication via the telephone. Nowadays there are so many different ways of constant communication that it can be overwhelming. Our recommendation to you is to take the time to determine which communication methods work best for you, which is highly dependent on the situation.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic How Far Will You Go. Our suggestion to you as you are considering how far you will go, is to make sure you take the appropriate time to consider as many variables as you can before committing to going all the way. As mentioned by Dr. Dave and Dr. Joe, our tendency is to go all in, however, we would caution you if your approach were similar to make sure you understand what you are committing too. Also make sure you are considering those around you before you commit to something that affects others. In other words, make sure that how far you are willing to go is aligned with the projected outcome that you expect. Also, really consider what sacrifices you might have to make or the things you might have to commit too.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz bring on a very special guest Dr. David E. Jackson. Along with starting our third season our conversation with Dr. Jackson is in reference to Maximizing Your Space. To begin with as we consider what it takes to maximize your space, you must first start with the all in important critical self-reflection. As we have stated on previous episodes, over the past two years, critical self-reflection, should be at the top of the list of things to do to move forward. Growth and development does not occur without first understanding where you are today and knowing where you want to go. As presented by Dr. Jackson during the podcast, maximizing your space also requires you to evaluate the space that you intend to operate in to ensure you are aligned. If you do not take the necessary time to identify your intentions, you are doing yourself a huge disservice and more than likely you might be forced to fit into a space that you might not like.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic How Do You Recover . When we think about recovery or recharging, we often think of physical therapy or some type of physical activity that helps us recover. The reality is that yes in many cases physical activity is associated with the road to recovery, however, there are other things that we can do to help facilitate recovery. For instance, taking time out after a busy day to reflect on your drive home, or listening to music or painting or sketching on a blank canvas. In other words, your type of recovery is up to you, whether it be physical activity or reading, whatever method chosen is up to you. The key is for you to be intentional about recovery and the method of recovery is up to you. As stated during the podcast if you have not determined your method of recover, it does not hurt to try a few methods to help you determine which method of recovery is best for you.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Embracing Differences . When we think of embracing differences we believe it all starts with opening your mind to the possibilities. Of course our initial response to embracing differences is to think of familiarity and the things we feel more confident with. In other words, typically we are more prone to go with what we know rather than even entertain the thought of embracing any differences. This is most likely attributed to the biases and assumptions we already have about certain things. Although our mind makes an attempt to assist us with calculating the input it receives, it relies heavily on the already known. When this happens our mind immediately needs convincing otherwise, therefore it is very challenging to redirect your mind to entertain other options. With that said, remaining aware that you have these biases and assumptions and keeping your mind open to the possibilities you will be in a better position to embrace differences.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Staying Out Of Your Head. Many of us at one time or another have been consumed by all of the thoughts and feelings swirling in our heads. So much that it hinders us in a way that often times prevents us from making any decisions or moving forward. In many cases, staying in our heads often leads to negative and critical self-talk, which ultimately leads to critical self judgement. This in itself could hinder you and cause indecision. There are a few things we recommend to help you minimize the swirling in your head. First suggestion is to make sure you are truly seeing the person in the mirror and to make sure you gain an objective perspective from someone close to you. Second suggestion would be to take time away from the stressors caused by all of the swirling in your head. In other words, go to your happy place. Whatever you do remember, we are our toughest critics and that we tend to place more emphasis on the negatives rather than focus on the positives.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz bring on a very special guest Amanda Weck to celebrate the 100th episode of the podcast. Along with the celebration on this 100th episode our conversation with Amanda is in reference to Feedback. As with many of the topics we discuss, feedback is an important factor when we consider personal and professional development. Although feedback often times causes anxiety and or ill feelings, it is a necessary element of growth and development. The challenge for many of us is how we perceive the feedback and whether or not it is meant to helpful or hurtful. As has been mentioned on previous episodes, the most favorable approach when it comes to receiving feedback is to do so with an open mind. Remember, no matter what feedback you receive, it is still up to you whether or not you choose to accept or reject the feedback. Of course, we would like to think that the feedback we receive is meant to assist us that is not always the case, but it is still important that you take to the time hear and process the feedback.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Goals for 2024. At the beginning of the year, typically many of us make numerous New Years resolutions that often fizzle just after the new year begins. In this episode, we focus not on goals that fall into the new year's resolution category, but rather fall into the continuous growth and development category. As we have stated on previous episodes, creating goals and action plans typically take longer and if done correctly fall into a bigger scheme of things rather than just quick fixes and antidotes. For 2024 we recommend evaluating previous years for wins and things you want to continue doing as well as things that did not go so well and that you have decided not to continue. The idea is to continue on your journey making the appropriate adjustments that gets you that much closer to achieving your goals.

As we continue this journey on our podcast, we want to continue to provide you with examples of not so ordinary people do amazing things, regardless of where they came from or the humble beginnings they started with. As we have said on many of our previous episodes, we are all on a journey, which has made us who we are. On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Momentum. When we think of momentum, we typically we think of being able to stay the course to get something accomplished. We also think about not wanting to disrupt the momentum to ensure we complete what we set out to complete. For the most part momentum is a good thing, however, it should be noted that momentum can also have negative effects if we have not taken the time to identify where your momentum is taking you. As with most of our topics, one of the most important things to consider when thinking about momentum is to start with critical self-reflection. As with most endeavors, one of the first things you need to do is define what success looks like, at the same time identifying potential milestones as well as being sure to leave space in the plan for unforeseen obstacles that might occur. Bottom line, make sure you have considered many things before you begin going full forward. In addition, make sure you are celebrating the milestones along the way, this keeps you motivated to see it all the way to the end.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Are You Comprehending? Often times we believe we have comprehended an interaction with someone or a situation only to find out later that the reality is that we did not fully comprehend the interaction we previously had. How do we overcome this dilemma? What can we do to ensure we are comprehending? To begin with we need to make an attempt to not only hear, but rather to listen so that we better comprehend the intent. Some other things we can do is to repeat the intent of the interaction, or to invite an objective into the interaction and allow them to express their interpretation of the interaction. Another thing you can do is to check in, what I mean by that is to send a draft copy or to reach out to give your interpretation of the interaction to make sure everyone is on the same page. There are many things you can do to ensure your level of comprehension is where it should be rather than assuming that you got it right. So, remember next time you want to make sure you are comprehending, pause to make sure you got the intent of the interaction, this will definitely save time and potentially minimize any heartache.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz bring on a very special guest Dr. Marion Perez. In this week's episode of the journeys of not so ordinary people podcast we cover the topic “Work Ethic" and what it means to all of us. As with many topics on the podcast related to personal and professional growth and development is the fact that it would be very difficult to achieve our goals without a good work ethic. As we have mentioned on previous episodes, to achieve your goals and to experience success it takes persistence, discipline and the willingness and ability to change when needed. Many of us have had great examples of people in our lives that have shown us what is possible through having a great work ethic. More than likely we have probably seen the results of not having a great work ethic as well. If you didn't know it having a great work ethic is a key ingredient when it comes to being successful and achieving your goals. Think about it if you do not have a good work ethic more than likely you will not do what it takes to achieve your goals. Having a good work ethic will aide you when you don't believe you have what it takes to be successful. Having a good work ethic drives you to resolve problems and to come up with solutions. Having a good work ethic, will ensure you give your best efforts.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Sweating The Small Stuff. Often times when we are faced with certain situations, we immediately begin sweating the small stuff without taking the time to evaluate the situation. What we recommend is that you take the appropriate time to evaluate the situation so that you can take the appropriate actions. This may also require that you incorporate others so that you have the most information available to make an informed decision. This applies to being aware of situations that may not appear to be a big deal but should be considered. Like many of the discussions we have on the podcast in addition to evaluating the situations, it may require gathering data, which in many cases may be reaching out to your network or peer group for relevant information. This will require trust and respect of others to accomplish this portion of the task. The bottom line is that you take the appropriate time to determine whether or not you should be sweating the small stuff.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Regroup To Come Back Stronger. Have you been in a situation that did not go as planned? What was your response? Were you able to regroup and come back stronger? As we have discussed on previous episodes, it all starts with critical self-reflection, but in this case, it requires an intentional focus so that you are better prepared when you come back. This not only applies to failures or missteps, but rather it applies to success as well as the unknown. If we take the time to regroup, we will be in a better position to respond most appropriately. The more time we take to gather our thoughts, gather data and evaluate our situation, the better prepared we are to move forward.

It is not recommended that you immediately respond to a situation but rather you should take some time to make sure you are aware of your surroundings so that you are more equipped to respond at the appropriate level. In addition, when it comes to staying in control, if you choose not to stay in control remember there is always someone willing to take on that responsibility and for the most part you will not like how they take control. Another thing to consider when you are staying in control is that this also applies to maintaining control even in positive situations. The most important thing is that you remain aware of your surroundings.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Hold On To Your Power and what it means to us. In reference to holding on to your power, we are referring to you making sure you are accurately portraying the person that you want to be perceived. Often times we diminish who we are so that we can fit in or so that we will be accepted. Sometimes we possibly do it to stroke someone else's ego, so they are not offended. The reality is that it is not your responsibility to make special provisions to accommodate others to make them feel better. By the same token, we should not expect that others will accept us totally for who we portray ourselves to be. At that time, it is up to us to accept whether or not they choose to accept us. The bottom line is that it is up to us to hold on to our power or give it as we choose, but remember once you give up your power, it has a tendency to diminish who you are or who you would like to be.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Career Mapping and what it means to us. When we think of career mapping, we should think in terms of goal setting and figuring out what it will take to get there. Very similar to identify a destination on a road trip and the time and effort it takes to map out your plan for a trip. Very similar considerations should be made for career mapping. Once the career goal has been identified then we can create the milestones needed to get there. During the episode we also introduced the idea that you may have to spend some making lateral movements rather than just go straight up the ladder. This approach is done so that you gain useful knowledge about areas that may not be your expertise, which in turn will you provide you with an understanding of the entire organization. We also identified the need to reach out to mentors and people close to you as you begin career planning so that they can assist you with the mapping process.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Keeping the Dream Alive and what it means to us. Often times we forget that we still have the ability to dream. For the most part, we do most of our dreaming as a child when the world has not dictated what is expected of us. The reality is that we can dream until the day we are no longer on this earth. However, because of responsibilities, life happens we fail to remember that we have the ability to dream. Of course, our dreams may change over the years, but that is ok, as long as we keep dreaming. Keeping the dream alive, means that we will be deliberate about pursuing our dreams. As we all know, typically nothing is giving to us without hard work and commitment. If we want it to happen, we have to make sure we are willing to do what it takes to reach our goals and fulfil our dreams. Dreaming also means that you are keeping your mind open to the possibilities, because in some cases what you are dreaming of does not exist and it may take your ability to envision something different that it is manifested.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Winning Mindset and what it means to us. In the past we have talked about having an open mindset, in this episode we want to expand upon that as we introduce having a winning mindset. Having a winning mindset means that you are taking action and applying the open mindedness. For the most part having a winning mindset includes critical self-reflection, persistence, discipline and the willingness to do what it takes to succeed. When we think of a winning attitude, we are often drawn to athletes and artist as having a winning mindset. The reality is that we all have the ability to embrace a winning mindset and it does not have to be on a large scale as compared to others. We encourage you first to define what success means to you so that you can work on achieving your own goals. Often times we allow others to define what that success looks like and as many of us are aware that when we pursue a goal that is not our own it is very hard to have a winning mindset.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Personal Board Of Advisors and what it means to us. When you think of board of advisors you might think of associating that phrase with the workplace. What we are referring to is the fact that our mentors and coaches can also fall into the category of advisors on the personal level. Think about it, people that assist us while making sometime life changing decisions, is very similar to advising the leader of an organization on decisions that will ultimately effect many people within the organization. On the personal level, the assistance can be in the form of personal or professional development, or it can be in the form of assistance with a number of other life changing decisions. We would also like to remind you that your personal board of advisors will likely change over the years or with each passing achievement. Not to say that we should discount the value or marginalize our coaches and mentors, but rather that we will likely go through many stages along our journey, and it only makes sense to make sure the relationships you are forming remain relevant and continue to make sense as time goes on. As been said previously, the more information we have, puts in a better place to make decisions that positively affects us.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Look Beyond The Trees and what it means to us. Often times when we think of a forest, we think of the barriers and the things that hold us back and prevent us from moving forward. What we would like for you to do is to consider the possibilities and thinking beyond the trees that are in front of you. Of course, we know it is more difficult than just saying you are looking beyond the trees without any frame of reference, in fact, having the ability to look beyond the trees means that you are very good at visualizing things that do not currently exist. The reality is that it does take faith, not only in yourself, but also faith in the sometime scary unknown. Like we have mentioned in a number of our previous podcast, it does take critical self-reflection to understand what it might take to see beyond the trees, it also likely take your ability to see things very similar to what a young child my see as they grow and develop. The bottom line is that it does take an ability to open your mind to the possibilities to a least being willing to think about things that are not directly in front of you.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Power Of Thought and what it means to us. When we speak of power of thought we are referring to you considering everything you have learned and experienced over the years and applying it to situations that may not be clearly defined. If we think in terms of advancements in technology, we have to think about using the power of thought to think beyond the boundaries that are in front of us to progress and move the needle forward. As with most things we encounter we have to do some form of critical self-reflection to understand your current limitations and your acknowledgement of your understanding of the limitations. More importantly we must be willing to open our minds to the possibilities even with those limitations being present. The power of thought if utilized correctly has the potential to open us up to a whole new world of expectations thereby overcoming the idea of institutionalization that often limits our thought process. The power of thought allows us to push through that minimalistic way of viewing things and allows us to visualize what we cannot see.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic "What's On Your Plate" and what it means to us. Often times we fill our plates with things that we wish to accomplish, but the reality is that we fill our plate with too many things and the end result is that we have a hard time, completing any of those tasks. Like many of us, we are creatures of habit so when it comes to overcommitting many of us feel an obligation to pile as many things on our plates as we can. The reality is that the more we pile on our plate the less chances of us completing those tasks. Many of us have a super person complex where we believe we can complete whatever is thrown at us, not taking the time to really evaluate whether we have the capacity to take on new task. At the professional level it is also assumed that everything assigned to us immediately because a priority that must be completed, but the reality is that the more projects we are assigned increases the chances of us not completing any of them in a timely manner. What we often fail to do, is to take the time to evaluate whether we have the capacity to complete the number of tasks assigned to us. More importantly even if we do take time to evaluate, we don't always pay attention to what is directly in front of us. We also fail to recognize that we are overwhelmed and that it is ok to say no.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic "Building Relationships" and what it means to us. When we think of building relationships we often think of networking. Of course, building relationships is very critical both on the personal and professional side. As mentioned in many previous episodes, Dave and I met on LinkedIn about seven years ago and have since built a very strong relationship. Initially we both joined LinkedIn as a way to connect with other like-minded individuals but as many of you are aware, our relationship has turned into much more. With that said, our relationship did not just form, but rather we intentionally begin to build a stronger relationship. Think about relationship you currently have or would like to have; it takes a committed effort from both parties. It also takes building trust and mutual respect for one another. As a leader, building relationships is key and not just to get people to do what you want them to do, but rather to create an environment where you show that you truly care about people. Leadership has to be earned and building relationships is a good start. What are you waiting for start building meaningful relationships today.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic "It's A Marathon" and what it means to us. It's a marathon often refers to running a race, but it can also relate to our life journeys, whether its personal, professional or career. When you think about a marathon versus a sprint we typically associate a marathon to something that takes a long time. For that reason we encourage you to start with critical self-reflection to determine where you are trying to go and from there you can define the steps and the time needed to complete your marathon. When we think of a marathon we also may get a sense that it might take longer than we first considered. At this point, we might feel discouraged, but we advise you to take a look at what you are trying to achieve to make sure it is aligned with where you are trying to go. We know this is point is critical because it is easy to get discouraged unless you define what success looks like for you. During this planning stage it is also important to consider clear milestones so that you can celebrate as well as define times that you might take a brief break or pause, while at the same time making sure you have a support system to assist you during both the highs and lows and the in-betweens. Bottom line is it is a marathon and for the most part it is going to take a while, so keep that in mind and if you have determined it is worth it, that you stay the course!

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic " Managing Your Career" and what it means to us. When we think of managing our career, we immediately think of being deliberate about your career and where it is headed. As with many of you, we typically do not get there overnight, in fact many of us experience many things before we figure out that we need to manager our own career. One thing that Dave and I have both learned over the years is that if you choose not to manage your career someone else will gladly manage your career for you and more than likely you will not like how they manage it. What we recommend or suggest to you is to do the all-important critical self-reflection to help you determine where you are today, where you would like to be tomorrow and then determine what it is going to take to get you there. Not to say just because you dream it or plan it, it will automatically occur, but rather once you have identified what you would like your career to be you at least have a starting point to begin your journey. As with most of the topics we discuss there is a level of commitment, discipline, sacrifice and time associated with managing your career. So, remember, to manage your career is to manage your destiny and your level of success, it also assists you in reaching your potential!

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic " Lasting Impressions" and what it means to us. What type of impression do you want to leave for others after you have departed? On this episode Dave and I discuss the importance of leaving a lasting impression. As many of us know, for the most part, we leave some type of impression. What we have control over is whether or not the lasting impression is good or not. When we speak of leaving a lasting impression, we want to be clear that we are not referring to someone that has been in an organization or position for a long period of time, but rather we are referring to anyone having the ability to leave a lasting impression. Like most things we encounter, leaving a lasting impression has a lot to do with how we show up each day. For many of us our intent is to show up in a positive way each day, which translates to us intentionally giving our best. This also requires that we remain consistent and deliberate, thereby creating a positive lasting impressions on others.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic " Being Curious" and what it means to us. When we think of being curious we think back to when we were children, and everything was new to us. We were all starry eyed at one point in time and most things were still unknown to us. Fast forward to our adult selves, think about how being curious wil help you continue to grow and to develop. Remaining curios starts with keeping our minds open to the possibilities, in other words we go into to the situation expecting to gain more insight than we had previously. If we do not remain curious, we are destined to continue in a place of complacency, thereby minimizing our chances for growth and development. Sometimes being curious just means taking the time to hear a different perspective from someone else, or as simple as rethinking a situation from a different point of view. In either case, being curious helps us to think about the what if's and the possibilities. With that said, to continuing growing and developing remain curious and embrace what you don't already know!

If you have ever done any long distance traveling with kids in the car you are likely familiar with the phrase, Are we there yet? As identified in many of the previous episodes, Dave and I have shared our experiences reaching huge milestones but still continuing on to the next milestone. So, it is safe to say that we are not there yet. Although it may appear that we are never satisfied, but the reality is that we are excited about getting to the next destination. Simply, we still have a desire to continue moving forward, we are not saying that everyone should continue seeking opportunities and progressing forward, but instead, we encourage you to practice critical self-reflection before making a decision about what is next for you. As always, remember to do what works best for you, because the bottom line is that this is your life and your journey so do what makes you happy.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz brings on a very special guest Eric Crist. In this week's episode of the journeys of not so ordinary people podcast we cover the topic “Career Transitioning" and what it means to all of us. Although we have discussed this topic on a earlier episode we thought it would be a good idea to revisit this topic with a different perspective. With that said we have invited Eric Crist who is currently transitioning from the military as well as assisting others with their transition. As we have discussed in many of our previous episodes, career transitioning means that you are as prepared as you can be just in case things do not go as planned. In most cases, many of us become complacent due to the fact that we get comfortable with our current circumstances and of course we typically cannot see into the future. Although we can not predict the future, we still have the ability to put ourselves in a better position and we can do that by staying vigilant and remaining relevant. A couple of ways we can improve our chances of having a smooth transition is to be as prepared as you can be whether it is ensuring you stay relevant in your current field or by determining what is needed to enter a new career. Networking is also key to being prepared for a career transitioning so that you can make sure you are aware of industry requirements as well as being able to clearly articulate what you bring to the table. Remember, career transitioning is constant and not just a onetime occurrence.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Reinventing The Wheel and what it means to us. In the past it has been suggested to many of us not to reinvent the wheel when something already exist. On this episode we would like to challenge that thought. We suggest instead to take the parts and pieces that make sense as a starting point or template and then begin reinventing the wheel to suit your purposes. As we have mentioned on many of the previous episodes, the choice remains yours and it only makes sense for you to apply things that matter the most to you rather than replicate something that exist that is not relevant to you. The bottom line is as we stated, it is your life, and it is up to you to get the most out of your life. Even if we were to give you a blueprint, you would still to make the appropriate changes that makes sense to you.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Entreprenuerial Spirit and what it means to us. To begin with, often times when people think of the term entreprenure they quickly associate that with a business, whether it is starting or owning a business, which entails you provide a service or product. The reality is that having an entrepreneurial spirit has more to do with your approach to resolving problems or creating new ideas. For example, you are part of a project team at work and you are tasked with resolving a current problem. As a team member you reflect on your past experiences, skills, knowledge, education and training to provide potential solutions to resolve the problem, very similar to what you might do to resolve a customer's problem as a business owner. In either case it requires you to evaluate the existing state to determine how to proceed in an effort to resolve the issue. This may also require you to think creatively to resolve the issue, which might require your ability to think outside the box.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic In Open The Aperture and what it means to us. Opening the aperture is in reference to keeping your mind open to the possibilities. Often times we limit ourselves to the things that are only directly in front of us, the reality is that there are so many things that are going on at any given time and if we do not keep our aperture open we have the chance of missing out many new opportunities. We have said this many times before, we do not expect you to openly accept everything that is presented to you because we know that using that approach can be become very overwhelming. So we do expect you to monitor the possibility of taking in to much, however, we do expect you to accept those things to are applicable to you and discard those things that might cause to much noise. In either case, remaining aware will allow you to choose what makes sense to you and what does not make sense. We recognize that by keeping the aperture open you are opening yourself up to potential overload so remember all of the advice we provide is just that suggestions and recommendations, it is up to you to choose what is appropriate and makes sense for you.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic In Applying What You Have and what it means to us. When we think of applying what we have, we think of taking the skills you have, the experiences you have, the knowledge you have acquired over the years and repurposing them to be applied to something knew. In previous episodes we have discussed the importance of taking stock of the tools in your toolbox and thinking of how they can be utilized in a different way. Keeping in mind that our skills should not be displaced to make room for more skills but rather kept in the back of our mind just in case we need to recall them at a later date. This idea can be applied in both a personal and professional setting. For instance in my case I was an aircraft mechanic, and I was able to use those skills in a career outside of aircraft maintenance and repurpose those skills to be used in the manufacturing environment. So remember what you have can be used and applied to something in some or fashion, it is up to you figure out how they can best be applied.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic In The Begnning and what it means to us. In reference to in the beginning, not to sound philosophical or biblical, but when we think of in the beginning we think of the start of something new, but the reality is we start something new everyday. In fact, we start something new multiple times of the day. For most of us the only time we are able to recognize a new beginning is when we make a conscious choice to start a new beginning. Of course, when we make that conscious choice, we must take the appropriate time to evaluate and reflect on what that new beginning intails. However, what if we did not iniate that new beginning, what do we need to do? We recommend that you take the appropriate time to do some critical self-reflection to help you determine how this new beginning can best be maximized to your advantage. Or you also have the choice of acknowledging the new beginning, but choose not to take action. In either case, it is up to you to decide which course of action you will take.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Direction and what it means to us. When we think of direction, we often think of where we are headed, for the most part, we are also thinking in terms of reaching our final destination. As we have stated on many previous episodes, if we choose not to choose our own direction or destination someone will choose the direction for us. More than likely we will not be happy with the direction chosen. We must remember that we control our own destiny unless we choose not to be an active participant in where we end up. Even if you don't know a final destination, it is still in your best interest to choose which direction you would like to go, even if it is left, right, back or forward, it still makes sense for you to choose the direction you would like to go. Before you choose your direction make sure you have done some critical self-reflection and have a destination in mind before you choose your direction, this will minimize the chances of having to redirect and change your direction more than it has to be.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Self-Discipline and what it means to us. When we think of self-discipline, we should also think of goal setting. What we mean by that is self-discipline without a clearly defined goal is harder to maintain and that there is no intent for self-discipline. This can also lead to a lack of purpose thereby leading to a sense of believing there is no need to continue to do something without an end state in mind or defined. We also encourage you to continue with self-reflection and evaluation to make sure that your self-discipline is directed in the correct place. This is also the time that you can apply what you have learned throughout your journey so that it makes more sense to continue the self-discipline because it is more aligned with your goal or achievement.

When we speak of Power of Choice we are referring to you maintaining your power of choice because you ultimately control your happiness and if you give up your power of choice you put yourself in a position to accept whatever comes your way. Just remember you can maintain your power of choice as long as you are aware of what you are foregoing if you give up your power of choice. Not that it is a bad thing if you understand the ramifications of your actions. When it comes to your choice to be the victim or the victor, we encourage you to take the time to remain the victor even in not so favorable situations. You hold the power of choice and it is yours to relinquish so we encourage you to consider what that truly means to you.

When we refer to what is next, we are referring, to whatever you consider is next for you, whether it be personal or professional, the decision still remains to you. When you consider what is next for you, we recommend that you do the all important step of critical self-reflection, in most cases it is very difficult to think about where you are going if you dont know where you have been or where you are currently. This is a most critical step in the forward moving process. Once you have taken stock of where you are and where you have been you will have a clearer picture of where you want to go. Only you hold the keys to what is next for you, exercise your right to choose what is next for you.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Never Too Late and what it means to us. Often times when we think of Never Too Late, we think of time closely being associated with age rather than the idea of time being a factor that just exist. We all are currently traveling on different journeys and therefore we are all subject to starting and stopping at any givien time during our journey. We would just like to remind you that it is never too late to begin something new or to resume something you started long ago. Regardless of age and time, we encourage you to continue your journey based on your own needs and desires and throw time and age in the wind. By no means do we suggest logical considerations before starting something new, however, we do not want you to use age or time as a crutch that prevents you from being a better version of yourself.

Although respect should be expected by everyone, respect is often demanded and not earned. In the past we may have expected that respect should be a reflection of how you would like to be treated. In recent years, it has been expressed more often than not that when it comes to respect, it might be more appropriate that we treat people with respect based on the way they prefer to be respected. In other words, we need make sure we know how they would prefer to respect as opposed to us assuming they want the same form of respect that we do.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Technology and what it means to us. As most of us are aware, technology is ever changing and, in many cases, more rapidly than we can comprehend. Much like we have stated on many previous episodes, considering what changes you adapt to or incorporate into your life or environment should be done after reflection and evaluation of where you are today and where you would like to be in the future. It should also be mentioned that not every technological change must be incorporated especially if it does not fit. It is also fair to mention that even technology changes frequently, the changes are not always that advanced and therefore allow for you to transfer previous skills that you have learned to the new change.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Seeing Others and what it means to us. When we think of seeing others, we are reminded that we should strive to see others in their entirety and nothing less. It is very easy to say we see others, but do we really see them? If we keep in mind the way that we see others is to commit to trying to see through others eyes and not just substituting our own perception of what others see. We can facilitate this process by taking the time to get to know one another on a deeper level and not just the surface. If we keep in mind that most people just want to be treated just as we would like to be treated with respect and dignity. The more we take the time to get to know people the more we increase our chances of truly seeing others. In most cases this does not occur overnight it is imperative that you keeping working until you see others as they would like to be seen.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Professional Development and what it means to us. In the past, we have discussed the topic of personal development and for the most part personal and professional development are closely related and intertwined as typically one form of development compliments the other form of development. As we have discussed in many of our previous episodes, before you decide on professional development one of the most important exercises you must become very comfortable with is the critical self-reflection piece and determining where you are currently. From there you can make a more informed decision about where you are trying to go, and the last step wuold incorporate the steps needed to get there. Don't get me wrong not everyone is in a hurry to pursue or seek out professional development so what Dr. Dave and I would like to remind our audience is that professional development also encompasses you developing yourself even if you are happy where you are today because you always want to be prepared in case the unthinkable happens.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Company Culture and what it means to us. If you are currently working in an organization or have worked for an organization in the past you have probably experienced a well-established company culture. Although many of us recognize different cultures within our society, one culture that exist is often forgotten. Company Culture can be a variety of things including pleasant, toxic, innovative, nostalgic, nurturing and a number of other things that have not mentioned. As with any decision to remain in a certain company culture this decision should be based on your own needs and desires and what you are seeking in an environment. What is often overlooked is the fact that sometimes we no longer fit our existing company culture and it is necessary for us to make the decision to leave for our own growth and development or the fact that the company culture is no longer in alignment with our own. In either case, whether you decide to leave or stay be sure to evaluate whether this is a good fit for you.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Resilience and what it means to us. Although sometimes we may choose not to believe it, but we are all resilient even if we choose not to believe it. Some of us may be more aware of our ability to be resilient than others, but the reality is that everyone of us possess this skill. As discussed throughout the episode, one thing remains constant is the fact that it comes down to making a conscience decision to either become a victim or victor when it comes to resiliency. It is true some of us have been in a position where we are forced to respond to a situation and often times more frequently than our peers. The fact remains that we still have a choice in how we respond. Again, some of us have been exposed to this exercise more than others, but that does not mean you are not equipped to handle similar situations. The point we are trying to make is no matter what situation you face or how it came about, just know that you have the ability to manage the situation and therefore you can control whether or not the situation is positve or negative. Of course, be sure to take what ever time you need to respond and or reflect on the situation, but know that it is ultimately up to you how it all shakes out.

Dave Peltz discuss the topic Consistency and what it means to us. When we think of success we often overlook what it takes to be successful, because what we typically see is after all of the hard work that happens behind the scenes. In most cases it takes a consistent effort to achieve the results we desire, it is not going to happen overnight, especially without consistency. If you were to ask a successful person what their recipe for success consisted of, most of them will tell you it didn't happen without some form of consistency. Although consistency is one of the main ingredients for success there are other actions and terms that must also be incorporated such as: discipline, persistence, commitment, goal setting and flexibility just to name a few. For the most part goal setting should be at the top of the list of actions that you must define before getting started, without knowing your endstate it would be very difficult to develop any type of consistent routine. Not trying to derail your efforts, but consistency with commitment increases your chances of success and goal completion. Remember consistency is key!

n this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Transferable Skills and what it means to us. Over the years most of us have compiled a list of skills that we have gained due to our past experiences and encounters. In many cases we may not have considered our skills to be transferable skills. The reality is that many of the skills acquired over the years are transferable skills in some form or fashion. Part of the challenge is to evaluate those existing skills to see how they can be utilized under the appropriate circumstances. Much like the example that Dr. Dave provided in reference to communication and how he was able to use the skills he learned as a young adult to further his career in both the military and beyond. Another important consideration has to do with being able to stack the acquired transferable skills and to use them in the appropriate settings. Bottom line is that the skills we have learned over the years can be used and recycled and used over and over again. More importantly, those transferable skills can be combined to form new and further useful and applicable skills!

It has become a common occurrence to see people as they rise to a certain status in life that they forget where they come from. We are here to let you know that without all of your experiences and interactions you have had over the years remains a significant part of who you are today, whether or not you choose to forget where you came from. Remembering where you came from can assist you as you ascend any ladder, by keeping you grounded and reminding you that as fast as you have risen g you can fall just as fast. Remembering where you came from can also keep you in touch with reality rather than slip into a false sense of euphoria as you attempt to erase those past experiences. On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Don't Do It Alone and what it means to us. Often times we think when we reach a milestone or achieve a goal, we want to believe we did it alone. The reality is that we do very few things on our own. Years ago, it was easy to believe that anything good that happened to us was because we did all of the work ourselves, therefore our thought was that we did it alone. Since then, in reference to that early narrow-minded thinking approach, we have come to realize that there was always someone assisting us in some form or fashion. As mentioned throughout this episode, recognizing someone is always assisting us reminds us that someone is always in our conner reminding us that we are not doing it alone. By the same token, why should we even consider doing it alone when in most cases more heads are better than one. So next time you want to conquer anything of significance remember that it is likely there is someone that you can count to help you complete the task!

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz bring on a very special guest Dr. Darnell Patton who can be found at: Authentic Leadership: Inside The Mind of Dr. Patton on Facebook. In this week's episode of the journeys of not so ordinary people podcast we cover the topic “Taking Ownership and what it means to all of us. As with many topics on the podcast related to personal and professional growth and development one of the first things that immediately comes to mind is the need to change your mindset. It has been discussed at length on previous episodes that changing your mindset leads to sustainable changes that ultimately leads to growth and development. As easy as it is said, we totally understand that it is more difficult than just deciding to take ownership. As highlighted in this episode taking ownership includes holding yourself accountable and not just when things are going well, but also being willing to hold yourself accountable even during difficult times. Of course, through our willingness to face these difficult times as we pledge to take ownership the reward sometimes not seen is the growth and development that occurs as we forge ahead claiming victor and not victim. By taking ownership of your own actions, you should also recognize this action gets you that much closer to taking control of your own life. Are you ready to take control of your life, then start by Taking Ownership!

Embracing your uniqueness starts with you recognizing that you are unique and that there is no one like you. We are all unique and with that we bring different perspectives and experiences that we can share with others. More importantly, once you embrace your uniqueness, you will be more inclined to be your authentic self, which is what we should all strive for. Unfortunately, many of us struggle with accepting who we are and therefore spend more time trying to be someone or something else rather than embracing our uniqueness. Not to say that you shouldn't strive to improve and move forward, our recommendation is that you don't do it in a way that minimizes your uniqueness. Start embracing your uniqueness today!

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic New Season and what it means to us. As we all know if you pay attention to the weather the season changes like clockwork. But unlike the weather we all face new seasons at different times in our lives. More importantly new seasons in our lives can come at any time and could be either negative or positive so for the most part we could struggle when faced with certain types of seasonal changes in our lives. Often times when a new season occurs in our life, we are left scrambling and trying to recover because obviously it is to late to prepare for this new season or is it. Not to say that you can prepare for every season that might occur, however, I would venture to say that you can use prior changes in seasons to possibly prepare you for a season that might occur again. It may not be the exact seasonal change that you experienced in the past, but the experience might be just enough to give you a starting point. The new season can be in form of an addition to the family or a tragedy in the family or it could be a change in your employment status. With that said, what can you do to prepare you for a new season?

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discusses the topic Milestones and what it means to us. Often times when we think of milestones, we think of reaching large and extravagant milestones. The reality is that we should view even the smallest of steps forward as reaching a milestone. In past episodes Dave and I have often discussed the importance of setting goals, self-reflection, celebrating, taking action and not overthinking just to name a few. When it comes to milestones, reaching a milestone no matter how small keeps you motivated towards reaching your final destination as well as gives you confidence to keep going. It can also act as a way to measure your success as you reflect on past accomplishments. In other words, keeping track of your past milestones reminds you how of far you have gone. No matter how you define your milestones including how often your milestones are acknowledge, the key is to recognize you have taken another step forward. As identified on this episode Dave and I celebrated our 52nd episode, more importantly 1 year of the Podcast, which in itself is hard to believe. We want to thank all of you for following our Journey as you go through your own Journey. Please feel free to reach out to us. Remember to acknowledge and celebrate your own milestones!

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discusses the topic Adapting To The Environment and what it means to us. As you improve your situational awareness so should you be inclined to adapt to the environment based on that awareness. Having the ability to adapt to the environment will afford you the opportunity to adapt to most situations. As previously identified, it is not enough to have situational awareness if you do not act upon that awareness. Although as a condition of military service adapting to the environment is an expectation for military members and their families adapting to the environment typically means you will have the ability to apply your past experiences to the new environment. Both myself and Dave have been placed in situations that we had to adapt to our existing environment and for the most part we were better equipped to adapt to that environment. Of course, to be able to adapt to the environment means you will likely have to do some critical self-reflection along with deliberate and intentional action thereby leading to adaption. Adapting to the environment will also increase your chances of staying relevant regardless of whatever situation you might be exposed to.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discusses the topic Situational Awareness and what it means to us. Often times, when we think of situational awareness, we think in terms of occupations such as the military, law enforcement and first responders where situational awareness is paramount and, in some cases, needed for survival. The reality is, that situational awareness can apply to most situations you face. For instance, as you walk into a room do you take a brief moment to look around the room to see if you recognize anyone familiar? Or if you drive to a new location, do you take a look around before you exit the car? The point I am trying to make is that situational awareness is universal and should be applied to most situations. Situational awareness is about evaluating your situation and reacting accordingly, this may also include critical self-reflection. Whatever the case may be situational awareness can be an effective tool to assist you with the decision-making process. Remember, situational awareness is different for everyone, so we encourage you to keep an open mind.

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discusses the topic Leading Self and Others and what it means to us. Leading self and others is more than just a functional title that we are more familiar with. For most of us we often think of leading having to do with a title we are awarded because of our position of authority. As many of us have learned, leading others has more to do with your ability to lead regardless of your position or title, but rather your ability to lead because of who you are and your ability to motivate and inspire others. Of course, leading others cannot occur unless you have learned how to lead yourself. This begins with that all important first step that includes critical self-reflection. Knowing your own skills and abilities will help you fine tune your attributes to help others. For the most part, most of us are fully capable of leading others, the separation for many of us begins when we make that deliberate choice to lead. To lead or not to lead, might be the question you ask yourself first. If you choose to lead, do so because you choose to lead and not because you believe it is the right thing to do, just like everything else define what leading means to you first and that will help you identify the way you proceed. Learn to lead yourself, before you attempt to lead others! Be the example you want to follow!

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Focusing on 2023 and what it means to us. When you think of the year 2022 what will you remember most, for me and Dave the year 2022 when by very rapidly with both a number of highs and lows. What we choose to remember most are those good things that happened in 2022 and minimizing those things that did not go as well. Don't get me wrong Dave and I have not forgotten those occurrences but rather we prefer to use those setbacks as learning moments that provide fuel for our next endeavors. For 2023 Dave and I have some very deliberate plans to improve and to continue to provide content, we also look forward to what has not been identified as of yet. The point is, it is a new year, and we are excited about what 2023 has in store for us! What will you focus on for 2023? We recommend you take the momentum from the year 2022 and apply those efforts and energy to 2023! Here's to a great start to 2023!

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discusses the topic of Planning & Preparation and what it means to us. As mentioned in this podcast, planning and preparation is not a stand-alone activity but rather a culmination of many areas such as goal setting and being intentional just to name a few. As we have stated in many of our episodes most of these topics are truly dependent on other topics we have discussed to this point. For instance, even if you have identified a goal, more than likely you will not reach that goal without careful planning and preparation. In other words, these functions should be performed more in unison rather than as an entity all by itself. Planning and preparation should be used in your personal life as well as your professional life, from event planning to career planning. Whatever the case may be planning, and preparation should be considered when attempting to reach a goal you have set for yourself. If you have set your sights on a specific goal or achievement, remember to include a hefty planning and preparation segment into the mix, so that you are not left spinning your wheels and wondering if you will reach that goal or achievement. Remember effective planning and preparation increases your chances of goal achievement, so do not forgot that all important phase of goal setting, planning and preparation!

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Tools Your Toolbox and what it means to us. If you are not aware of it we all have accumulated tools in our toolboxes over the years. Whether you have an actual toolbox for your profession our it is a mental toolbox comprised of your experiences, knowledge and information that you have acquired over the years. Over the years most of us have compiled an overflowing toolbox with tools that assist us in many situations we encounter on a daily basis. One challenge many of us face is knowing when to pull a particular tool out of our toolbox. One helpful tip is to continue self-reflection and evaluation of your existing toolbox to determine where you are today and where you are headed and whether or not you need to add items to or alter certain items from your mental toolbox. Have you evaluated your current toolbox lately? If not, I recommend you do an inventory on your mental toolbox to make sure you are able to apply those tools when needed! Are your mental tools ready to be used?

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic True To Yourself and what it means to us. Being true to yourself for the most part is a way to keep you grounded and to always rember where you came from. However, we would also like to remind you that being true to yourself should not come as a detrement to yourself but rather as an acknowlegement to where you are currently. Being true to yourself also means you should continue to take stock in where you are to ensure you are on the path that you set for yourself. Being true to yourself will also allow you to empathize with others more easily, which in-turn might give you opportunities to assist them as work through their issues. Remaining true to yourself is a constant reminder to keep your mind focused on what is important to you. Are you being true to yourself?

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discusses the topic Telling Your Story and what it means to us. In recent years, storytelling for me and Dave has been one of the ways we have relayed our experience to others. Our goal is to help you and maybe prevent you from having to take the long scenic route. We have also learned that all of our stories are unique, and we never know when our stories might positively impact someone that may be going through something not so pleasant. Even if only 1 person out of 1,000 gained something from you telling your story, it was well worth it. The one thing that we may not be aware of when we tell our stories is the people that we might impact indirectly. So, if you are not telling your story, then start, you have a wealth of information that might benefit someone so the more you tell your story the opportunities you have to help others. Tell Your Story!

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Making Your Move and what it means to us. Dave and I are of the opinion that Making Your Move is closely related to being deliberate about your future. Of course, not all situations will allow you to make your move when you are ready. In some cases, you are not giving the time or opportunity to make your move on your own timeline, but rather you are required to make on the spot decisions. As most of us know, opportunities may only come around once, so it is in our best interest to be ready to make our move when it is presented to us. Are you ready to make your next move? Are you prepared just in case? If not, why not? Do yourself a huge favor and be more deliberate about Making Your Move, so that you are ready, just in case your timeline is interrupted!

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Time for Change and what it means to us. How do you know when it is time for change? What are the indicators that let you know when it is time for change? For the most part, often times many of us are aware when it is time to change, but we refuse to take action. In other cases, we are not immediately aware of the need for change. For some of us we need assistance form those around us to let us know we need to change. Sometimes change is absolutely obvious, but we still choose to ignore the obvious signs. In either case, change is a necessity of life and the sooner we embrace that fact the sooner we can recognize the benefits associated with the change. Next time you are faced with a need to change will you be ready to make that change?

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Opening Your Mind to the Possibilities and what it means to us. Over the years Dave and I have opened our minds to the possibilities and from this approach we have experienced so many things we otherwise may have never experienced. Opening your mind to the possibilities gives you a chance to learn something new, try something new and overall become more experienced and knowledgeable about a certain topic. Opening your mind to the possibilities also allows you the opportunity to dream about what could be. If it were not for our ability to open our minds to the possibility, I do not believe Dave and I would be here discussing this topic on the Podcast. Opening your mind to the possibilities opens you up to limitless possibilities, in other words you are able to see things that do not yet exist. Open your mind to the limitless possibilities!

On this episode your co-host Dr. Joe Hamlett and Dr. Dave Peltz discuss the topic Staying Relevant and what it means to us. In our opinion, staying relevant means that you have been staying up on new technologies and advancements in your respective environment. For most of us, this remains a constant, in other words, we have chosen to be considered a Lifelong Learner just to stay relevant in our careers. This is likely a given in respect to most employers/organizations that there is a certain level of expectation of job competency as well a certain level of commitment to continuing the learning process. This may also be the expectation on a personal level as things continue to change daily there is a personal decision for you to choose whether or not you want to move in that direction. As with any of our topics that we discuss on the podcast the decision remains completely yours! Are you staying relevant?

Even though you will likely experience these situations the takeaway is your perspective and how you respond and for me and Dave our experiences have led us to the belief that there is always something positive to take away from these situations and therefore we choose to be thankful for those experiences. We encourage you to be thankful for what you have because as you know tomorrow is not promised to any of us and we should live life accordingly. Also let people know that you are thankful for them not just certain times of the year but as often as you can. Be Thankful!

Of course, when we think of Team Building, we would like to think that we are going to select the most effective team by basing it on the skills they bring to the table. The reality is that in most cases we are far from selecting the most effective teams because of our preconceived ideas and biases associated with people. To overcome this dynamic, it is important to take the time to build strong relationships with people and once this is accomplished, we become better equipped to build our teams based on relevant information versus relying on our on assumptions of what we know about people. For instance, many of us refer to peers and colleagues as customers, even different departments within our organizations are referred to as customers. However, personal and professional branding are more intimate, meaning that they both are a personal representation of you and potentially what you stand for.
