A tragic wildlife loss that has taken place in the last 160ish years is the extinction of the eastern elk subspecies. These majestic cervids were the stunning feature of the prairies east of the Mississippi river, but they were unfortunately erased from these ecosystems by overhunting and habitat loss during the settlement of that part of the country.
