Konsumkultur is the podcast for UK business trading with Germany. It’s also the German word for “consumer culture” – we chose the name as each episode will focus either on “Konsum” (that’s the consumer or retail business), or on “Kultur” (which stands for the creative and cultural industries). Produced by the UK’s Department for International Trade at the British Embassy Berlin, the series covers a range of topics related to doing business with Europe’s largest market, featuring guests from the UK and Germany.

In this episode, we focus on ecommerce in Germany. We speak to Alien Mulyk, Public Affairs Manager for European and international affairs at bevh, the German E-Commerce and Distance Selling Association. Alien shares the results of some of the latest studies on ecommerce in Germany, speaking about demographics, habits, and payment methods, whether stereotypes about German shoppers are true and explaining the meaning of terms like Abmahnung and Impressum. We offer some tips on reducing returns with a blend of classic, tech and nudging solutions, and discuss the problem of the “attitude behaviour gap” when it comes to sustainable shopping and selling.
