Show from 4/17 aired on award-winning "So, What's Your Story?" On KPFT 90.1 FM Houston.

Journey is a word often used to describe what listeners takes when absorbed in a story. Ellen Teitelman Wohl is exactly this kind of storyteller who can escort listeners on this kind of journey because the pictures she paints are so vivid, you not only hear, but see her story unfold in front of you.

Her life was furiously tested when she became interested in wellness and self-care. As in most cases, she wasn't ready for how her life was about to turn to the surreal. It began when she was losing herself while helping her husband Jack recuperate from a myriad of illnesses. Depression and anxiety lead to burnout.

Curiously, Ellen discovered that burnout was normal, and after seeking support from other family caregivers, she realized she needed a breather. Her astonishing skill as a writer prompted the book seen in the title line. Hard to put down. It's even harder to walk away when listening to her voice as she tells a collection of her stories in this must read. Raw. Real. Poignant. Thanks for listening.

This show from award-winning "So, What's Your Story?" was aired on Houston's KPFT on Wednesday, April 3. The guest storyteller, Warren Holleman, delivered stories about discrimination. However, the innovative format and style is both unexpected and riveting. His skill as a teller is off the chart, and that is no hyperbole.

Discrimination is fought with empathy. We learn empathy through stories. Every story lover knows this. Consider science: As we connect with characters in a story, our brain releases oxytocin, often known as the bonding or love hormone. But these stories need to move us, take us to a place where we follow these characters and shadow their experiences. Lots of storytellers do this but none does it better than Warren Holleman, retired Professor of Behavioral Science at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. But this celebrated position isn’t the seed of this evening’s stories. Rather, it is Warren’s remarkable sense of inquiry, research and artistic skills, and relentless hatred for hate that make his stories special.

Please enjoy one of the most reqarding 60 minutes of your life. Peace

Dr. Hank Roubicek, producer and founder of "So, What's Your Story?" delivers a series of stories about being raised by Holocaust Survivors. Growing up in a home with his survivor grandparents and mother is an experience that must be heard. However, as an award-winning retired professor in communication, veteran docent at Holocaust Museum Houston, author, radio personality, and champion storyteller, the method he uses to weave these stories together make them not only astonishingly moving, but remarkably memorable. In short, his abilities as a teller are special.

The stories in this podcast are teasers from his "Schmaltz on Rye" storytelling show performed nationwide. His concerts include a tapestry of stories crafted for the specific audience fortunate enough to be a part of the experience.

Our lives begin as a blank page. Each page filled with memories and episodes that define us. In short, our life is a story and a story is our life. Sounds simple. But the journey to self validation is only as meaningful as the passion that fuels the storyteller who delivers it. Sharon D'Orsie is the consummate teller and the perfect example of a teller with the kind of profound insight , complete with the requisite wit and wisdom, to make the point and engage you in the same way as a great book is deemed the proberbial "page-turner."

Sharon poignantly talks family, heritage, and cultural definition. She is a Moth storytelling champion several times over.

Enjoy this edition of Houston's award-winning "So, What's Your Story?" on Houston's 90.1FM or kpft.org. Wednesdays at 6pm CST.

Living in Austin, Bernadette is regularly seen in regional theatre, receiving the Austin Critics' Table Award for Conspicuous Versatility. She can be seen in the film Miss Congeniality, and more recently in The Trial of Alice. Over the years, we’ve hosted hundreds of storytellers representing every faction. Among some of our best tellers were physicians,  whose commitment to healing were vicariously felt by us from the stories they told. Poignant, uplifting, often humorous tales of recovery---and sometimes loss. Medicine can indeed be magic to those suffering and for many---it can be a miracle. But today we explore stories which unleash a darker side in the medical profession but one equally important---stories shared by my guest Jack Houston, or Nurse Jack, as he is affectionately known and is also the title of his book Nurse Jack—a collection of stories from which today’s selections are drawn.

Mission control! Spacewalks! Remember those, and holding your breath hoping it all works out.  Well I have Jerry Miller, former flight director for NASA, whose specialty was “extravehicular activity”, aka spacewalks. He will tell us about one of his most exciting memories directing EVA for NASA, and the first and only time ever for a three-person EVA. But that’s not all, Jerry also tells us about coming out as gay while at NASA. As you can imagine, the culture was not particularly open to non-traditional lifestyles. This story is special as also he tells us about his motivation for taking that step.  In all of these stories, there is the story within the story.  And finally our closer-almost getting kidnapped by the Russian Mafia in Moscow!
