Female Genital Mutilation, (FGM) is the partial or total removal of the female external genitalia. It’s an absurd practice with no health benefits but instead harms the victims both physically and psychologically.
Although the exact origin of female genital mutilation (FGM) is unknown, scholars have suggested it could have originated around 2000 years ago, from Ancient Egypt and Sudan or Ancient Rome where it was used on female slaves to prevent pregnancy and sexual relations. FGM has since spread to other regions where it merged with existing initiation rituals for men and women. Different cultures have different reasons for practicing FGM, including maintaining virginity for marriage, protecting a girls sexual purity and morality, and increasing or reducing sexual pleasure.
The prevalence of FGM varies worldwide, but it is majorly present in some countries of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and within their diasporas. As of 2024, UNICEF estimates that worldwide 230 million girls and women (144 million in Africa, 80 million in Asia, 6 million in Middle East, and 1-2 million in other parts of the world) has been subjected to one or more types of FGM.
According to research, Nigeria and Somalia has the highest rate of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the world in total numbers and It is usually experienced by girls aged 0 to 15 years old. Among the largest ethnic groups that practice some form of FGM are the Yoruba, Ibo, Ijaw, Hausa, and Kanuri. The Fulanis do not practice any form. Practice among states of Nigeria vary from 0%-1% in Yobe to 90%-100% in Benue and 90%-98% in Ondo. No federal law prohibits FGM.
Although , in May 2015, then President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan signed a federal law banning FGM which was a good move in ending the virus, the new law alone was unable to address the practice because many communities are still practicing it till date.
FGM has been a big problem and it still is and It’s so unfortunate that girls are being mutilated and cut every 10seconds globally. Measures need to be taken in eradicating this virus that violates our human rights.

Nigeria’s unchecked population growth over decades has contributed to the crisis of unemployment and poverty. The geometric growth of uneducated and unskilled youth in an already stressed and unproductive economic environment has negative implications for both economy and security. This is already evident in some parts of the country. Chief Obafemi Awolowo wrote in Path to Nigerian Freedom, published in 1947, that Nigeria “is a mere geographical expression.”
In a popular line in her book 'Half of a Yellow Sun', Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said "I am Nigerian because a white man created Nigeria and gave me that identity. I am black because the white man constructed black to be as different as possible from his white. But I was Igbo before the white man came."
Not to be misconstrued, it is perfectly acceptable for someone to be proud of their ethnicity; yet, this raises the question of how citizens see civic and ethnic nationalism.
The reality that there is ethnic prejudice in almost every part of the nation is not negated by this either.It is well known, that many Nigerians would like to identify primarily with their ethnicity rather than their nationality. But now, this is more than just an identifying issue—it's a national one. Nothing is held against someone who takes pride in their ethnicity unless it becomes a source of contention for a nation's unity.
Numerous discussions, issues, and difficulties that require unity have resulted in shatters due to ethnicity. Political misdemeanists have discovered anti-ethnicism as a highly effective tool for diverting courses raised against their odds; they portray the problem as one of ethnic interest or aspiration rather than the national agenda that it actually is.There are hardly any trends or topics on social media these days that don't touch on ethnicity. Thus, the question of how much the average Nigerian believes in civic nationalism arises.
In states such as the United States, one is considered to be from Indiana if they were born there. Your state of origin is determined by your place of birth, even though your parents may be from Alabama. While not being necessarily in favour of it, it encourages civic nationalism among individuals of different ethnic backgrounds and helps one become impartial when making decisions that affect the country.

They all changed the status quo in the society which we enjoy today. Unfortunately, the essence of those past struggles is gradually being eroded. The Nigeria our heroes past fought for, is becoming a shadow of herself!
