Truth about the event of Jesus' crucifixion is that the four Gospel writers Matthew, Mark, John and Luke, none of them was an eyewitness of the event. Matthew clearly writes that all the 12 disciples had deserted Jesus and ran away. It is just a guess that John was there but it is not exactly mentioned by any Gospel by name.
They had all deserted the place and runaway scared of their own death so none is recorded to be there to be an eyewitness, and rest is the story for the credulous Pauline-Christians.
