Strap on your walking shoes and meander with us through the master plan for a revitalized downtown Zachary, where inclusivity isn't just a buzzword, it's the pavement we tread. Ashley and Brian paint a picture of a bustling hub, balancing the cozy nooks of increased density with the breezy strides of ample parking. It's a canvas where every stroke is a step towards a destination as magnetic as Perkins Road, but with our own unique, small-town vibrancy. The storied streets of Zachary come alive, not just through plans on paper, but through the personal journeys and local lore shared by our guests.
As we round out our chat, envision a Zachary where health and wellness aren't just found in a gym but interwoven into the fabric of our daily bazaar—at the Farmers Market, no less. A town branded not by a faceless logo, but by the pulse of events like the Mind, Body, Move, Health and Wellness Expo and, dare I say, the Banana Run. It’s here, in this laughter-filled episode, that Ashley and Bryant illustrate just how a community like ours can stretch its limbs, embrace change, and still cling to the roots that make us, unmistakably, Zachary.

Hello to all of our listeners in Zachary who tune in every week. We’re back in the groove with new diggs, the winter issue just rolled out last Monday, and we’ve got nothing but good things ahead of us in 2024.
While the winter season is a time of new beginnings to most, it is also a time when we can look to those less fortunate that are in need of a helping hand—or paw. In the case of Must Luv Dogs Rescue, they need us to first become informed before we can help. And that is why we’re taking this episode to our loyal listeners of this great Web 3 technology—the podcast. You can help spread awareness when you hear about owners thinking they have to take the last resort and give a dog up to a kill shelter. Whether it’s the vet bills, a bad fit with a particular breed, or simply not having enough time, there is always a better way.
Cindy Shotwell and Ashleigh McHugh are here to inform us of foster opportunities, upcoming events, legislation, and of course adoption opportunities. If you’re like me, you really just want to hear about the dogs. If you want to check out any pooches referenced in this podcast, go to mustluvdogs.org.

Welcome back Zachary! When we hit 100 episodes, we took a breather to move to our brand new—actually 120 year old headquarters at Virginia Street in beautiful downtown Zachary. I may not be hosting for the full 120 years, but just take a moment to envision how amazing Zachary could be in that time frame. We’ve got to set that aside fear and channel the good stuff.
That’s exactly what we’re here to do at P&P, and we’re chronicling the best of Zachary one podcast, one story at a time. We welcome our fellow colleagues, albeit young colleagues today, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome Alyvia Pierson and Maddy Snyder of the Zachary High School Hoofprint. When they noticed the school didn’t have a newspaper, they founded one, creating something that will outlive their time at Zachary High for years to come. They are here to bring awareness to this amazing digital publication, which you can find at thehoofprint.org! If you like it, consider donating to help them hit their goal of $10,000. The Hoofprint is not just a school newspaper, it is where the future of Zachary shares their stories.
**To that point, we’re sharing some of our top stories at P&P and The Hoofprint in what we hope will be a new tradition.

Coach Little is Zachary Highschool’s Strength & Conditioning coach—and there is nothing little about him, at 6’3 280 pounds, he’s a larger than life human spark plug that enjoys rushing out on the football field with the team and pushing them towards greatness on and off the field. He’s the former strength & conditioning coach at McNeese University and has also been in the trenches with Coach Brew at Livonia.
Here’s the thing that I find most impressive about Coach Little—he’s 100 percent laser focused on your high schooler’s athletic success. He doesn’t coach social studies or math in his free time—he lifts weights, he coaches football, he calculates how to help your kid their next PR.
We’re going to strength, mental toughness, and dedicating one’s life and work to the future leaders at Zachary High.

Jack Burk informed us that his mom would be turning 100 on Sunday, December 3rd, so Bre and I took a ride out to their sprawling family estate off Old Scenic Hwy. The driveway was 1 mile long, to give you an idea. We did the interview at the family’s dining room table, so you may hear some uncharacteristic background noise.
Coincidentally, P&P just hit the 100-episode mark, so it’s kismet, really. This week we’re honoring Jane Mills Burk and talking about Zachary's rich history, and enjoying an awesome conversation with one of Zachary’s oldest and most cherished residents. She was actually one of the first Zachary cheerleaders before there was even Zachary Football... Can you imagine?!

**Today’s show is all about perspective. We’ve got Rafael Nowicki, Polish-American immigrant and entrepreneur, owner of Biomedical Support Services, Inc. He’s got an incredible story of how he escaped communist Poland with the equivalent of $8.00 in his pocket and made his way to England and then Zachary, Louisiana. Big thanks to the Mayor of Zachary for giving up his fireside chat to celebrate the diverse voices in this great city through celebrating Polish-American heritage month this October.
As we prepare for the winter months in Louisiana, where it gets cold and still somehow humid, where families get together and celebrate and some may quarrel and experience anxiety, where we close our accounting books for the year and begin again—this show will serve as a reminder that it could always be worse AND that it could always get better if you are tenacious and pursue your dreams.**
The weather is a perfect 65-70 degrees and sunny, and I’m in the booth with a hot cup of coffee. Life is good. Let’s get into it.

At P&P, we’re all about highlighting the best of Zachary, free of negativity and conflict. If you live long enough, we’ve all found ourselves in situations that have challenged our ability to be the bigger person. Today, we’ve got someone who stuck it out with us in the trenches when a neighboring politician was dogging our city to help win votes. We’re going to get into that and more. Here’s something to be grateful for—Summer is officially over and Fall is here. With that, comes a lot of exciting things for the family and for the city.
Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Ambre DeVirgilio, the Councilwoman representing District 3 in Zachary. Ambre is a dedicated public servant and advocate for her constituents, working tirelessly to improve the lives of those in her district. In this episode, we'll dive deep into her vision for Zachary, her accomplishments, and the challenges she faces. Hey Zachary, I can feel a change in the air…can you? If you don’t have your Halloween decorations up and a PSL in hand, it’s time to get with the program.
We’re going to talk about a unique perspective today, running—yes, if you know me, you know I like to run with my kids, if I can keep up. We’re going to be specifically talking about Girls on the Run, a program that at its heart empowers girls through running.
Children today are exposed to long standing gender stereotypes, societal obstacles and cultural challenges that can be detrimental to their emotional and physical health. Girls on the Run helps girls recognize their potential and rise above limiting gender expectations. This program is really about so much more than running – it makes an impact at a critical age when confidence and physical activity decline. There are so many benefits to this program, we thought we’d have Cate Willis on to tell you more.

Welcome back to another Zachary local experience. It’s summer, and a lot of you are traveling this week, so we dipped into the archives for one of our all time greatest episodes. We’re airing June 19th or Juneteenth. This day in 1865 is one of the most significant days in American history. Juneteenth commemorates Union Army General Gordon Granger's proclamation issued on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, TX which ordered the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state of Texas. It is a federal holiday, and a day for both solemn reflection and celebration.

If no one is there to “take you out to the ballgame,” do not fret. We’ve got Cayan Byrd in the booth today, and he’s a specialist when it comes to bringing the game to you, through The Bayou Sports Network. While he’s still saving up to buy you all some peanuts and Cracker Jack, he is here to explain how to tune in and turn on to God’s chosen sport. I met Caynan through Richie Perry on the Pickleball court, another local press box royal–one with an even keeled dink when he gets close to the kitchen. Enough with the Pickleball speak though—we’re talking baseball people, and it’s Springtime in the Z!

Ever wonder why you can’t turn your backyard into a coin operated laundry or how to subdivide that family tract into the next great neighborhood development?
When planning and zoning becomes a necessity, there is usually some economic reward at stake and things can get contentious. Whatever side of the decision you are on, our Planning & Zoning department is our first line of defense against “un–smart” growth. P&Z is responsible for maintaining the character of the city the way the majority believes it should be upheld. What I’ve learned is that when something gets denied, it has to be uncharacteristically bad for the city, like a daiquiri shop next to a church childcare facility. Even still, when something gets approved, it is not unlikely that there won’t be sour feelings after the gavel drops. That’s business folks, and we’re going to explore further.
We’re explaining the why and the how with City of Zachary’s own Planning & Zoning director, and we’re going to meet an incredibly even-keeled professional. I’ll attest that we are lucky to have him. Steven Villavaso of Villavaso and Associates, responsible for configuring our Unified Development Code said that Dixon is an absolute rockstar. Let’s get to know him, as he is here in person with us in the booth. You can usually find him in his element on Tuesday nights at Planning, Zoning, and council meetings.
Bryant Dixon has worked in the Urban Planning profession for over 8 years and specializes in zoning/land use planning, economic development, green infrastructure, and stormwater management. Before joining the City of Zachary, Bryant worked as a Sr. City Planner in the Environmental Affairs Department with the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO). Bryant has also worked as an Economic Development Analyst for Camoin Associates, an independent economic development firm in Saratoga Springs, New York, and a Sr. Planner with the Baton Rouge City-Parish Planning Commission. Bryant is a graduate of Louisiana State University. There he received a B.A. in Anthropology with a concentration in Socio-cultural Anthropology and a second B.A. in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology. He received his Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of New Orleans in 2014 where he specialized in Housing and Community Economic Development. Bryant is also currently a board member on The Water Collaborative of Greater New Orleans. And now he works right here in the Z.

Today we’re talking about love, debt, and finding financial peace in an expensive world.
Love puts no limits on topics for conversation—but if you’re constantly fighting over money, it’s not something you want to bring up.
Money is the number one issue married couples fight about, and it’s consistently a leading cause of divorce. This is why working through your money issues in a healthy way can actually more valuable than money itself.

Welcome people of Zachary, young and old, and I do emphasize the word young, today. We’ve been cookin up a kids takeover segment for quite a while, and with our Winter magazine edition dropping this week, we thought it was time to flip the script and let the youn-uns have a say. Without further ado:
The kids are takin’ over the booth today, but we’re still bringing you the best of Zachary, as promised. We’ve written the questions and picked ALL OF THE MUSIC—at least the music that our guest didn’t end up playing.
Today we have with us one of Zachary's own musicians….Lucy Yoes!
She can be found playing for the Zachary High Soccer team or at a local cafe jammin out. People are loving her music, and she’s only getting better—I can attest because I’ve heard her at Agave Blue. She even sang the national anthem for the city's inauguration, and you can find that link on her facebook page if you’re lucky enough to be her friend that is… or have Facebook. My parents don’t let me have facebook. That’s one of those things about being a kid—your voice is not typically heard. We’re gonna flip that on its head today!

We’re back in the booth with Zachary native and 13 year veteran industrial broker, Evan Scroggs, CCIM. CCIM means certified commercial investment member, and it requires over 160 hours of coursework, a working transactional portfolio, and a comprehensive final exam. In short—it’s a big deal. Evan is not only a member, but he is the immediate past president of the Louisiana Chapter of CCIM. Sounds like hair club for men, but evan still has his hair —as do i thankfully.
We’re going to talk market trends, updates, and Baton Rouge’s unique value proposition.

We’re all dreaming of Spring just around the corner, when Baseball returns to town and the action underneath the Zachary Water Tower is electric. Can’t you just hear the crack of the metal bat? I swung an Easton myself as kid, the Louisville Slugger, TPS was too pricey. I’ll never forget the feeling of catching a pop fly from right field with my left eye–true story. Attributed to a mean astigmatism and a reason to take up golf.
Baseball is known as America’s sport, emblematic of hard work, fairness, bravery, earnest competition and teamwork. Yeah, all that—but when it comes to youth baseball, coaches and parents have been known to bring a layer of complexity that may not be so good for the game. Enter the great tournament ball debate—is it good for the kids? Is is negative? You know the answer folks—it depends, and Jonathan Aldy is here to make sense of the layers of complexity around youth tournament sport. He brings a refreshing perspective, steeped in his own family’s tradition and experience with the game.
His father co-founded the Legendz tournament club. His brother Jacob Fisher is head coach of the Zachary High Baseball team and holds the homerun record for the school. His other brother, Jamison Fisher— well he’s just a local legend at this point, and we’ll let Jonathan explain why.
Hey Zachary,
We are back in action in 2023 with a fully loaded schedule of Zachary area influencers and beyond. Here’s an ever so small detail—this is actually our 50th episode. Yep, we started broadcasting last year and look at us now mom. I’d like to dedicate this episode to the late Veronica Waldrop, who was the first person to teach me what community means.
We’ve got an important episode for you. Today, we’re talking to Mike the tiger. No, not that Mike, this one works in the much quieter setting as head of research and instruction services at the LSU Library. Mike has been a librarian for 16 years, has a doctoral degree in public administration, masters in library science and history, and an undergraduate in philosophy. Hey, we both graduated in philosophy (cool huh?).
He’s here to discuss misinformation on social media and how to frame conversations about this with your kids. I’ve got a ton of questions about this myself.
We missed you last week, but we decided to take a breather to hang out with the kiddos on the last week of winter break. I managed to squeeze a fishing trip in there, as well. I’m feeling well rested and ready to check off some items on my resolution TO DO list. If one of those resolutions happens to be to stay more up to date on the market, well—we’ve got just the show for you today.
We’ve got Thomas Scott, CRPC in the booth today. That stands for Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor—savvy? We’ll talk interest rates, markets, and more, and we might just talk about ya mama and dem in Zachary.

Hey Zachary, as students take those midterms and parents eagerly await two weeks of balancing work, family time, and holiday chaos—we’re bringing you back to school. Yep, if you’re spending money, then it’s marketing season! We managed to coax one of LSU’s finest minds into the podcast booth today— and he’s doing it to help small businesses increase their marketing prowess. You can thank him by wishing him well every time you hear your cash register ring this holiday season.
Today, we’re talking to a master of marketing, a beast of branding, the one and only Dr. Dan Rice.
Hello Zachary! We can’t talk about football. Interest rates and the stock market? Nah. Feelings are still running too high to talk politics—and we even had a recount Thursday between Lael Montgomery and Jennifer Boyd. On that note, thanks to all those who stepped up serve the City, even if ya didn’t come away with the W this time. Let’s talk about how we’re going to get into shape whilst we still partake in the occasional holiday feast, shall we?
Today, we’re going to talk to the sultan of stretch, the OG of YOGA in Zachary—that’s Courtney Stalder of The Pilates House. If you stop in, you might catch a YOGA session, you might catch a Pilates class, or you’ll learn something completely new like I did the first time Courtney gave me the grand tour of her studio. Pilates is all about strengthening your core— and that’s the focus of our show today.

Hey everybody. If you’ve listened to this podcast before, you’ve heard us give a shout out or two to Kyle Lindow, Zachary’s own doctor of podiatric medicine.
Our paths crossed when I went to him for chronic foot pain. On October 21st, 2022, I underwent the lapiplasty procedure, known as the 3D bunionectomy if you’re hip.
Feet are sort of comical if you think about clowns, ducks, minotaurs—and we all had that one Aunt that kicked her heels off after family dinner and WHOA! Foot paint ain’t so funny though, as I experienced on a trip to Disney World with my family this summer. I tell you I could not get from the couch to the kitchen after a long day of walking.
Today, we’re going to fill you in on how to kick foot pain in 2023 or at least introduce you to someone who can help you out.

This is a podcast version of our 2022 Zachary Mayoral Race Runoff Interview with candidate David McDavid. It was originally a Facebook live broadcast brought to you by the fine folks at South Plains Food Company.
Hey Z-town. We’ve got a swinging show for you today. We’ve got Zachary’s own Satchmo in the booth today, Sean Gee, and that’s Mr. Gee to you students out there. He’s chosen the background music by Miles Davis, search it on Alexa by the title Freddie Freeloader.
After an absolutely stellar performance from the Northwestern Middle Schoolers last night, we thought it would only be appropriate to invite him to P&P to share the good things going on at Zachary Schools Music Education.
With the November 8th election behind us and run-offs to come, we decided to lighten up the mood with a topic we can all agree on—dogs! And there are no better deserving guests than Ron Anderson and his dogs Rip and Smoke, who respectively won 1st and 2nd at the 2022 (Super Retriever Series) Crown Championship, presented by Eukanuba. Friends of Ron can go to Ron’s facebook page and catch a glimpse of his four legged champs.
When we talk about the Crown, we aren’t referencing King Charles, The Crown is the Championship of the Super Retriever Series, which takes the dog and handler through the rigors of testing for the best all around team by providing hunt tests, field trials and hunt savvy situations in a competitive format. The event took place November 1st through 6th and Ron is here to fill us in and maybe even get you and your retriever connected to the sport.
Today’s episode is going to be a bit more serious than usual. We’ll be discussing a topic that most people, frankly, find hard to talk about. But that silence only allows the problem to grow, so we’re here to shine some light directly on it and to talk with someone who has devoted her life to bringing hope and resources to those impacted by it.
I’m talking about drug addiction and, more specifically, fentanyl. In communities across our country, people young and old and from all socio-economic backgrounds are dying from fentanyl overdoses. Because it is laced into so many different drugs, many people who died were not even aware that they were taking it.
Community Activist Tonja Myles has spent 20 years supporting those with mental health needs, substance abuse issues, and untreated trauma. She’s here today to talk about what her organization, Set Free Indeed Ministry, is doing to address not just the fentanyl abuse, but also the despair that so often causes people to turn to drugs in the first place.
This week we welcome Carl Herrick, Ethel resident, Navy veteran, owner and president of Sandler Training Facility located in Baton Rouge. Sandler is a world leader in sales and sales management with operations in 30 countries. Coach Carl Herrick, as he is affectionately known, is also the founding coach of the LSU Student Sales Team, helping the students compete in national competitions across the US, including the National Collegiate Sales Competition, which hosts 64 university and college teams from across America each Spring. He is also an adjunct faculty member, previously serving on the LSU Professional Sales Institute Advisory Board and Steering Committee. He also taught the professional sales practicum course for the purple and gold.
Imagine a place for small business owners where you can take a relaxing hike to
celebrate finally nailing down those elusive retirement details. A place where you
can eat a delicious catered meal and then, dare I say? Take a nap.
Well, unfortunately, I’ll have to keep imagining, because the retreat I’m talking
about is for ladies only. Let me introduce you to local photographer Gabby Chapin
and New Orleans photographer Scarlet Raven the women behind the Rested and
Relevant Retreat.
They’ve designed a place to help grow businesses AND the people behind those
businesses. Now, that’s what I call “smart growth”.
