I’m thrilled to have POET TIM XONNELLY join us! Tim’s just released a wonderful book of poetry called THE INVASION OF PANTOMIME. I’d say Tim is deeply connected to poetry. The conversation really took off when Tim talked about his connection to dreams and dreaming. Reading his book, it’s clear how much he values his dreams and how open he is to learning from them. I was also impressed by Tim’s genuine acceptance of what poetry does for him. He compares poetry readings to comedy shows, saying that in poetry, it’s perfectly okay to tackle heavy topics without trying to lighten the mood. That really shows how much respect Tim has for poetry. You’ll hear some of Tim’s pieces during our discussion, and I hope you’ll feel inspired to try your hand at writing your own poetry. I often feel inspired to be creative when I hear artistic expressions.

I’m really happy that my guest, Ezra Vancil discovered the podcast and got in touch. Ezra’s latest double album, along with a companion book, is called Morning and Midnight. Ezra’s story is a tough one, and he’s incredibly honest and open about dealing with substance abuse. He talks about how his connection to his creativity and sharing his struggles and successes has been a real help for him, in his own words, “Staying awake to life.” Plus, I think you’re going to really enjoy his music! From the very first moment, Christine Blosdale captured my attention! As I’ve been hosting this podcast for five years, I’ve received many requests from potential guests to be interviewed. I share this because I’m proud that I’ve created a program that people find valuable. Walking my guest, Zacha Belok, through this Encouragement Session, I felt a wave of hope wash over me. Zacha is a leadership coach, facilitator, and somatic practitioner whom I met at a Billy retreat. I found myself at a retreat in Devon, in the UK seated at a long table next to a wonderful singer songwriter William Jaquet, I knew I should invite him to be on this program right away. William is a very warm and friendly presence and on this rainy storm night we found a relatively quiet space to capture this conversation. I had heard William play in the evening the night before without knowing until later that he’s been a part of the band Luvcat on tour, and that he’s been writing and recording with his own band Big Society. Just hearing William’s beautiful voice with an acoustic guitar was quite a rich experience, I knew there must be a wonderful story lurking in there somewhere. I always end my interviews with words of encouragement from my guests and thankfully William allowed me to tease him a bit, because as you will hear I needed to hold his feet to the fire to get him to look beyond the grind of getting to a really well written song and to think of the miracles and benefits of investing in creativity. To me this speaks to his devotion to holding himself accountable and wanting to keep the bar as high as possible.

My guest Gavin Goska is a wonderful explorer of genres and his interview is a bookend interview with Ed Douglas as they together make up Midnight Syndicate. I’m really captivated by the kindness and thoughtfulness of Gavin Goska. It is so fascinating to hear how Gavin approaches creating mysterious and frightening scores for imagined movies! As you might guess, Gavin’s talents extend beyond composing and playing multiple instruments. He’s also explored restoring Victorian homes and creating early classical compositions. It’s wonderful to have conversations like this with Gavin, learning how he approaches each project, what’s known, and what’s unknown. I have a feeling that whatever Gavin focuses on, it will be delightful, and we can all learn from his approach and his willingness to tackle each project. Gavin is another example of finding his own unique work-life balance through imagining possibilities and bringing them to life through his artistic expression.

I have known my guest Ruven Hannah for many years through the Billys organization in Northern California. I have seen Ruven’s performance art and recently witnessed Ruven focusing on pure storytelling. I did not know what international experiences had played a part in Ruven’s creativity until he explained the circumstances of moving from Israel to England and then the United States. Along his adventures Ruven displays an amazing gift of “going for it” experimenting and trying out different modes of expression that paved the way from Puppetry to Performance Art and ultimately storytelling.

My Guest Billy Maxwell Taylor is a Dance Theater Maker and Ambient Dance Artist. I met him in the Forest of Dean through my connection to Actor & Filmmaker Henry McGrath as I was getting to know the Eden’s Cave Theater & Film Company. Billy is both a calm and joyful presence in my experience. It was delightful to get to know Billy’s influences and I would say (spoiler alert) you may want to have pen & paper handy to capture all of the amazing references that have inspired Billy in this interview. Billy describes how many aspects of Japanese culture have come to influence his artistry. I met my guest Jude Williams as a participant on a Discipline of Freedom workshop on the Scottish Island of Lismore many years ago. In my opinion Jude has a gloriously expressive beautiful singing voice. My main memory of that shared experience was hearing Jude sing the Sondheim song Being Alive over and over again exploring different prompts and approaches, sometimes in joy and sometimes in tears and sometimes in joyful tears! Jude has a very wonderful and dynamically beautiful voice. Recently I heard lots of positive feedback about Jude’s theatrical offering called Chunky Jewelry and I realized how much I wanted to add her voice to the Creative Engagement podcast. I’m so glad I followed that instinct because Jude has been investigating creativity and engagement deeply. I especially appreciated her ideas about how to know when her work feels satisfying.

I have to say I was so impressed when my guest Nemanja Kovač Barbarossa reached out to me about being interviewed to talk about his new book Visions from the Unconscious. My guest Eleanor Buchan is an artist and storyteller. I have known Ellie through the years and have participated in some amazing artist workshops side by side with her. Having said that there are many aspects of Ellie’s story that I was not aware of, and the last time I was in her presence prior to this interview was before her marriage and before the birth of her two children. Ellie’s magical voice was captured during a visit to her home in the Forest of Dean. It was a truly mystical visit so ripe with opportunities to explore what it means to be a creative person over the arch of a life and how engaged creativity can serve our beings. I’m so pleased to include my guest and friend, artist Iddo Oberski. I have known my guest Iddo Oberski for many years through the lens of his creative expression in our shared experiences at an artist retreat called the Discipline of Freedom. As it turns out many of Iddo’s artistic explorations have become a part of his creation called BALANCING IN FREEDOM. I have known John Sparks on and off through several artist retreats and through his wife Christine. My guest is Baker Mukasa Actor, Singer, Teacher and Lover of Life! I have had the privilege of getting to know Baker Mukasa in the context of an artist workshop. Baker is the youngest participant in our group and met our teacher Kath through the Youth Music Theatre or YMT organization in England. In our interview Baker describes a play where his character has a role of being the custodian of another character named Joy, but I think this is also applicable to Baker himself. I’ve witnessed his amazing singing in a full throated late night jam session and I think that custodian of Joy is a label he could easily carry.

I remember artistic retreats where I met my guest Tamsin Haggis and I was in awe of her creative exploration, her different styles and as I learned more I was fascinated with her background. Recently Tamsin has begun writing her own Substack which you can find here: Art Pilgrim which I find fascinating. I’ve seen Tamsin create sand paintings and abstract images that look similar to cellular images from a microscope as well as figures of dancers and images from her various travels that intrigue and inspire me.

I had the privilege of being paired with my guest Christel Knappe on a songwriting retreat on the Greek Island of Crete last summer. Christel’s creativity is multifaceted. As we get to know how Christel’s creativity manifests in her life we remember together the process of writing our song called Let The River Decide. My guest is Svend-Erik Engh a storyteller and story coach from Edinburgh, Scotland and Denmark. I was introduced by his wife Alice Fernbank who also appeared as a guest recently. "I found that painting of Ray the other day going through some 70’s art work. I realized that he was the first trans person I’d ever met. A beautiful Japanese boy with long hair. He wanted me to pretend that he didn’t have male genitalia, and didn’t want them acknowledged. I didn’t understand. I had never experienced it. This was when I lived in Mendocino. We spent some time together. Later I was told that he had overdosed on drugs. The painting was done by memory. I mentioned him in a text to a mutual friend from that time. I don’t know what pronoun she would have used I wish she was still here to tell me. Ray is mentioned in “Beaujolais is in My Blood- growing up gay and well fed above a family run French Restaurant”

(Michael Joseph) ArcangeliniJoe was born in 1952 in western Pennsylvania, raised there and in Cleveland, Ohio, has resided in northern California since 1979, currently in Sonoma County. He began writing poetry at 11. He has published in a lot of little magazines, online journals, & over a dozen anthologies. Diary of a Somebody is Zooby's recent project as the comedy actor Kenneth Williams in the John Lahr play based on the Joe Orton diaries (up and coming gay British playwright who was murdered by his boyfriend Ken Halliwell in 1967).
The Discipline of Freedom is an artist workshop. The workshop is limited to 9 participants and includes artists from all disciplines who are open and willing to develop and improve themselves. The workshop is led by Paul Oertel and his wife Nancy Spanier. Paul and Nancy are world class teachers with long rich histories in the performing arts: dance, choreography, theatre, acting, voice, film and piece-making. The Discipline of Freedom is more than just an artist workshop. It is also a gathering of souls searching for deeper knowing. Usually this is offered in or adjacent to a destination of amazing beauty and historical significance. There is a profound opportunity for transformation and a high likelihood of facing yourself and your fears. The experience is an invitation into a radical exploration of your own creativity and depth.
Through this work I met Kath Burlinson who is a teacher an artist, director and performer and founder of the Authentic Artist community in the UK. Kath created a course called Pathmakers where she invited a group of artists to deeply explore areas of personal development and spirituality.

Nathan Otto is a poet, activist, entrepreneur and humanitarian. He is the founder of the Safe Conflict Project, a five-year international project to foster collaboration among peacemakers, governments, business and community leaders to end and prevent violent conflicts worldwide. He served on the Board of the Alliance for Peacebuilding in Washington, DC for five years. Mr. Otto built and sold two technology companies from 1993 to 2005. Today he is the co-founder of Pine Creek, a renewable energy company. Mr. Otto holds a B.A. in Mathematics with Honors from Wesleyan University. He is the grandson of Bill and Vieve Gore, founders of W. L. Gore and Associates, a family-owned global manufacturing company best known for Gore-Tex outdoor fabric.

Aesthetic Agency Aesthetic means preference without defense. Irreducible feral truth felt through without fear or couth. Aesthetic is a crisis of rightness. We all know what rightness is, what it feels, how it smooths a caress of isness into a toss of experience. When apprehended it gongs the heart of unquestionable certainty, not just strong but immovable eternity. Aesthetic agency adds the urgency of making that rightness burgeon. Behind any reason or why rises that crisis of acausal choice. Shedding developmental snake-skins of childhood and adolescence, aesthetic agency wakens fully adult. Deepening below powerless strategies of reactive collapse or narrow aggression, larger than submissive child-mind, deeper than adolescent rebellion, this agency makes what is right and non-cooperates with the rest. A thrilling thrum of just-because, aesthetic agency electrifies body and spirit, muses mind to heights of line and form, from nothing born. Matured into aesthetic agency, the complete woman or man, the spiritual adult, is unexploitable, powerful, aware and awake. Fully cognizant of chosen values, transparent to truth, smoothly moving with circumstance, fearless and vulnerable, artistic killers, compassionate and well-armed, sexy as fuck to each other, scary as hell to the old dead order, these aesthetic agents are the vanguard of humanity, the healers, the leaders, the nation-re-builders, the world-regulators. These engineers of peace, poetic truth-tellers, raucous adults—they bar none, stoop to none, bow to none. They do what they are told by spirit alone, in fierce communion, with unwavering cooperation, with great love and little compromise. We die but cannot be killed. We include everyone. We know the ways and the means. Become one of us. You are very much in need. Awaken your aesthetic agency.

In this episode I interview Mairi Campbell.
Mairi Campbell is a pioneering Scottish musician whose work is rooted in, and draws from, her personal stories and cultural concerns.
After studying classical viola at the Guildhall School of Music, she has become an established member of Scotland’s traditional music scene, pushing the boundaries with her use of free improvisation, songs and stagecraft.
As an interpreter of Scots song, with David Francis, Mairi has contributed a significant number of songs to its current canon. She is the recipient of six national music awards including the Inspiration Award in 2018. In 2019 she was inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame.
Her first two solo shows Pulse (2016) and Auld Lang Syne (2018) have gained much critical acclaim and toured widely. The third part of her solo trilogy is due in 2021.
Since 2010 Mairi has been co-writing songs with musician and producer Dave Gray. These are now being realised on stage by her nine-piece ensemble, the Pendulum Band. Their music is also the voice of the giant puppet, Storm, which will travel round the coastline of Scotland throughout 2020.

Her articles on dance-theatre have been published in Theatre, Dance and Performer Training and Theatre Topics. She was a member of the Human Communications and Theatre faculty at Trinity University from 2007-2015. Now, she creates collages, journals, dances and rituals in her integrated arts studio in San Antonio, TX.
