While cost containment has been a top priority since the birth of the fleet industry, today, it has gained even greater urgency since fleet is more expensive than ever.
When you examine fleet cost increases in their totality, the fleet industry is experiencing a simultaneous convergence of many different cost trends.

The top six cost trends examined are:

Higher acquisition costs and the minimal or non-existent availability of fleet incentives.
Inflationary pressures on all goods and services, higher interest rates, and higher fuel prices.
Ongoing sourcing constraints primarily due to restrictive OEM ordering allocation systems that preclude fleets from getting all the replacement units they need.
As the average age of fleet vehicles in service increases, so does the frequency of unscheduled maintenance incidents and PM expenses as older vehicles enter new PM intervals, often requiring replacing wear items such as tires and brakes.
Higher rental expenses due to unpredictable OTD and slower maintenance turnaround due to replacement parts shortages.
Increase in tolls, dollar amount for parking fines, miscellaneous environmental disposal fees for tires and motor oil, and assorted property taxes on fleet assets.

One of the top trends impacting fleet managers is ongoing sourcing constraints to acquire replacement vehicles amplified by logistics delays throughout the entire order-to-delivery process.
The average age of fleet vehicles is increasing. The limited availability of replacement vehicles has forced fleets to extend the service lives of those vehicles currently in service. This has resulted in fleet managers being forced to operate older vehicles in a high-mileage fleet environment, resulting in the inevitable uptick in unscheduled maintenance.
The difficulty in sourcing replacement vehicles has caused fleet managers to use multiple OEMs or to compromise and settle for vehicles that may not be their first choice but are a secondary choice to fulfill the fleet application. This creates complexity in maintenance schedules due to the diversity in models in operation.
Inflationary price pressures and higher interest rates are putting upward pressure on total fleet costs, such as fleet acquisition expenses aggravated by lower or no fleet incentives, higher repair expenses, higher labor rates, and the ongoing price increases of replacement parts.

The ongoing delays in shipping out-of-service fleet vehicles to auction is increasing days-to-sale, which is increasing fleet depreciation expenses.
There are backlogs in de-identifying fleet vehicles, sometimes as long as three to four weeks. Fleets require that their vehicles be de-identified of all logos and signage before they can be sold at auction. These delays are increasing days-to-sale.
A third pain point is the lack of consistency at auctions in writing condition reports, which are the basis of how a vehicle is graded and has a direct bearing on the ultimate sale price.

In the automotive sector, demand for aluminum has softened due to component challenges in the automotive, medium-duty truck, and heavy-duty truck segments, which has created a slight relief in prices.
There is a strong influx of aluminum orders from Boeing and Airbus, which will lengthen lead times for the balance of the year. Production constraints for stainless steel has lengthened lead times to 50-80 weeks for delivery.
The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine will continue to exert upward pressure on commodity prices due a decrease in product availability since both countries were strong exporters of aluminum and steel. In addition, ongoing tariffs on Chinese steel will put upward pressure on prices.
The increased expenditure of munitions in Ukraine war has decreased munitions stockpiles in major industrial countries by 10-12 years. Pressure will mount to replenish stockpiles, putting upward pressure on brass and copper used in ammunition and heavier munitions and aluminum and stainless steel used in military equipment and missiles. Anticipation that these pricing pressures will begin at the start of 2024 calendar year.

On January 8, 2023, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Tesla, alleging that 2021 and 2022 Model 3 and Model Y were prone to stop suddenly due to the false triggering of the automatic emergency braking system.
In the past four years, there have been a number of vehicles produced by various auto manufacturers recalled to correct primarily software issues with the automatic emergency braking systems for specific models.
It is important for fleet managers to be aware of the possibility of phantom braking and to stay informed of the situation as new developments occur.

OEM fleet ordering allocation systems are limiting fleet buyers to fewer vehicles than they requested, causing unordered vehicles to be carried over to the next model year.
Ultimately these units that have been carried over into the next model-year will need to be replaced. But eliminating this pent-up demand will take a while.
Eventually, the industry is going to find equilibrium between vehicle production and end-user demand, but unfortunately that doesn’t look like it will happen in calendar-year 2023.

Globally, automakers are forecasting that half of their total worldwide vehicle production will be EVs by 2030. And it will take $1.2 trillion to achieve this goal.
A new tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act is anticipated that will be that provides a $7,500 tax credit for commercial EVs with no restrictions on battery sourcing or manufacturing.

On average, diesel stockpiles today are 30% lower than what they have traditionally been at this time of year. As of Oct. 21, diesel supply in the U.S. is down to 25 days, which means diesel inventories are at their lowest level for this time of year since 2008.
There is a direct correlation between the low inventory of diesel and the price at retail pumps. This low supply is exerting upward pressure on the price of diesel, especially since there is an ongoing strong demand for the product.
When diesel stockpiles contracted in April and May 2022, it created upward pressure on retail prices. In May 2022, No. 2 diesel hit an all-time record retail price of $5.51 per gallon.
The higher cost of diesel creates inflationary pricing pressures. For instance, when the cost to transport goods increases, those increased costs are passed on to end-users.
What will ultimately bring down the price of diesel and increase the inventory of diesel fuel will be the recession that everyone is predicting. A recession would slowdown in end-user demand and industrial activity, which, in turn, will put downward pressure on fuel consumption.

More and more of these catalytic converter thefts are turning violent, and on at least three occasions, the vehicle owners were killed while the crime was in progress.
It is important to instruct employee drivers not to confront thieves who are attempting to steal catalytic converters from their fleet vehicles and instead to keep their distance and immediately call 911.
In 2018, there were 1,298 catalytic converter thefts. Three years later, in 2021, catalytic converter theft claims jumped to 14,433 incidents — a 325% increase in a single year.
Year to date, in calendar-year 2022 from January to September, more than 50,000 catalytic converters have been stolen from parked vehicles in the U.S.

Labor shortages are occurring in many industries that support the fleet market, ranging from vehicle transport companies that are coping with an ongoing driver shortage, to national account fleet service providers who are struggling to recruit and retain qualified technicians.
These pandemic-induced labor shortages in the fleet industry extend deep into many fleet service provider organizations. Fleet managers complain of longer vehicle turnaround due to staffing issues at maintenance and collision repair shops.
There is also a massive shortage of drivers who operate trucks that requires a CDL (commercial driver’s licenses). Companies such as those in hauling/towing services and vehicle transport companies are having trouble retaining and recruiting CDL drivers.
Changing age demographics is also contributing to the shortage of workers due to the large scale retirement of Baby Boomers, who are exiting the workforce.

Demand for key commodities used to manufacture automotive parts has lengthened production times, thereby increasing delivery times.
These ongoing component shortages have triggered prices increases for individual parts — on average — up to 20% to 30% and in some cases, the price of certain parts have doubled.
Higher commodity prices increase manufacturing costs thereby reducing manufacturers’ margins, which puts upward pressure to increase parts prices. These increased costs are passed on to end users.

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, signed into law by President Biden on Aug. 16, 2022, creates a new set of rules on the issuance of tax credits to purchase new and used EVs.
People familiar with the new EV credit eligibility requirements describe them as confusing with harder-to-meet criteria.
To be eligible, an EV must be built in North America, most battery components must be assembled in North America, and battery materials can only be sourced from countries that have a free trade agreement with the U.S.
The Inflation Reduction Act will actually reduce the number of EVs eligible for the tax credits from 72 models down to only 22 models. The number will further increase when the battery sourcing requirements become effective on Jan. 1, 2023.

For the first half of calendar-year 2022, the microchip shortage did improve but it didn’t improve as much as the auto industry expected.
Pat Gelsinger, the CEO of Intel, expects the shortage of semiconductors to continue until calendar-year 2024, which puts us into the 2025 model-year.

The anticipated additional disruption of the supply chain due to today’s geopolitical issues will extend today’s supply chain imbalance.
The reason today’s situation in the Ukraine is so important is because most finished metals especially aluminum come from Russia/Ukraine and China, but more so from Russia/Ukraine since the U.S. added tariffs on Chinese finished materials.
If there is a tit-for-tat escalation in sanctions, it can crimp the supply of aluminum. Even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there was a 9 to 12 month order-to-delivery time for the time it takes to receive aluminum in bulk.
How will the auto industry be impacted by reduced availability of steel, aluminum, and stainless?
Mills are limiting who gets supply for the purpose of reallocating supply to higher margin customers. Problematic or low margin customers are getting letters from the mills saying they can’t supply metal. This “saved” production is being reallocated to higher-margin customers.
The price of aluminum has had back-to-back increases in the first two months of 2022. Also since October 2021, the price of aluminum is 68% higher.
