Looking Back: The Mental Advantage Podcast's Greatest Hits Part 1 - Episode 33 w/ Coach Bryn

In this episode we continue our journey back through all the episodes we did in the previous year.

We specifically are covering episodes 10-20 in this look back.

Reminding ourselves of our time James Williams who is a pro scout for the NBA and how he posed a powerful question for all athletes with pro dreams.

"Am I a man who they would want to give 10 million dollars to"

To our sit down with Marvin Bagley and seeing exactly what kind of mentality it takes to be that 10 million dollar man

Then we began our solo episodes but before we got really into it we met two amazing people in sports.

Dr. Scott Goldman had us thinking about how to measure ourselves, our skills etc and then we saw the journey of women's professional hockey all the way to the Isobel cup through the eyes of Mallory Souliotis

After that we had to take on Confidence Gratitude and we met so many more like Earl, Chris, and Jonathan on our path to 20 episodes.

Share with me what your favorite episode out of these 10 were and who was your favorite guest.

How To Track Your Goal Progress: The PDSA Framework - Episode 31 w/ Coach Bryn

Having a goal is one thing.

Knowing how to accomplish it is another

In this episode I am breaking down a simple process any athlete can use to track their progress to their goals.

Introducing the PDSA Framework

This comes from the field fo healthcare but it works in the world of sports as well

PDSA stands for Plan, Do, Study, Act

First it is important to come up with a plan. Some sort of game plan for how we are going to go about attacking our goal.

Then we have to execute the plan as we have laid out this is the DO portion of our formula.

Next we must study what happened

And finally we must make the necessary adjustments and repeat the process as many times as it takes to ge thte right actions to achieve our desired results.

Using this process is important for how you are going to know what is working, and what could be working better.

If you want better help on how to do processes like these to crush your goals reach out to me and schedule a call

The paradox of perfectionism and the Failure Formula - Episode 25 w/ Coach Bryn

Athletes struggle with wanting to be perfect

This is often because they hold themselves to the highest of standards.

This, on its surface, may not seem all that bad since of course one wants to be the best

However these standards are often far too high, and often unattainable leading them to experience issues with anxiety, mental distress, and ultimately can result in mental health challenges if left unchecked.

In this episode we are talking about why calling yourself a perfectionist and harmful and ultimately why being a perfectionist doesn't ever lead to greatness.

Then we turn our attention to everyone's biggest fear: Failure.

We will go over the 3 steps to the failure formula to make it work for you rather than against you.

Please check out this episode and share it with someone who needs to let go of their label of a perfectionist and learn how to use failure properly.

The resilience code: How To Focus On The Process vs. The Outcome -Episode 22 w/ Steve Fisher

Former professional Snowboarder is our guest this week on the podcast.

Steve is sharing all about his journey from a guy on a store-bought plastic snowboard shaped board to shredding powder with some of the best in the world.

He talks candidly about some of his own struggles in pursuit of the olympics.

He shares about his beginnings when snowboarding was just becoming a thing.

Steve came up in a time when they didn't even fit snowboards for young feet and yet he carved out a path to competing with the tops of the top and got some major props from them.

We learn with Steve why being in sports that only have their hey day at the Olympics can be challenging for funding and recognition.

Also the biggest lesson of all how to not get so focused on one competition that you can only perform well outside of it.

Really enjoyed the conversation with Steve and hope you will too.

How To Be A Better Coach: Learning the Love Language of Your players - Episode 21 - w/Coach Bryn

Often you see situations where a player or athlete thrives in one environment and does poorly in the other.

It may have you saying why is that?

In this episode I am asserting it is because we did not learn that players love language

Now I know some people think it isn't about love its about doing your job, especially in the case of pro sports and while I do believe that has a place you catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar.

So, imagine we learned the love language of our athletes, or just simply took the time to get to know them better you would then see a difference in the output.

We hear about an ROI in terms of stocks but what about ROI in terms of time put into a player.

It costs organizations millions in player development and obviously they are seeing it is paying off.

Take the time to invest in your player and they will in turn show you how much it means to them in their production and leadership.

What are you digesting?: How to Protect Your Mind From Bad Input - Episode 19 w/ Coach Bryn

We all could benefit from a little dieting of the mental kind.

There is so much to consume and we aren't always discerning of what we will watch, listen to or say.

Often it seems as if we repeat things that are popularly said or watch things everyone else is watching just so we can fit in.

However, this is a bad practice for our minds. We need to be like centurions at the gate not allowing some words to pass through our lips or teeth.

We also need to be more mindful of what we watch. Most of the news is negative and our tv and movies aren't much better in general.

Consuming these things leave us with negative world views and outlooks.

This episode is all about how to protect your inner environment so you can be more mentally healthy and strong.

The Unique Journey To Success: How To Be A Pro Women's Hockey Player - Episode 14 w/ Mallory Souliotis

Everyone's Journey to success looks different was the message Professional NWHL Ice Hockey Champion Mallory wanted us to know in Episode 14.

When she first laced up her skates there was no such thing as Pro Women's Ice Hockey and that remained true until she was in college.

Leaving her lukewarm connection to soccer behind she took the ice hockey world by storm and experienced a lot of success in her career pre college.

She encountered adiversity at Yale and not in the classroom exactly but learning how to push herself to make herself better. Mallory felt the rigors of her private high school education more than prepared her for the next level. To the point Yale may have felt easier.

The Measure Of A Man: How To Play To Your Strengths - Episode 13 w/ Dr. Scott Goldman

My conversation with Dr. Goldman was very enlightening.

Scott Goldman created a way to measure athletes based on 4 buckets and many professional teams tap him to find out how to better build their teams and ultilize them.

In this episode I asked Scott about his AIQ and how it works.

The biggest takeaways from our chat was that you can't predict or really measure human behavior.

At its core the AIQ that Dr. Goldman and his partner created was designed to give you a better insight into a person and where they are strong and areas that they may be lacking to know how to best utilize and employ that player.

Most importantly Dr. Goldman wanted people to know that no one thing can tell you everthing about a person that comes from a lot of introspection and support of a qualified assist.

Mental Health In Sports: How To Be Mentally Healthy and Happy - Episode 12 - 1st Solo Ep We have 11 episodes released and I thought it time that we have a little chat about something important.

I had been wanting to do a solo episode eventually but with everything going on in the world of sports around Mental Health it felt like this was the perfect timing to do it.

As a mental performance coach I work with athletes regularly and they share their struggles with confidence and feeling like they aren't measuring up.

But there are also moments where they share about their anxiety and more serious challenges as it pertains to their mental health.

Then you see athletes like Naomi Osaka being so transparent as well as the big news about Simone Biles and you realize how much this isn't talked about enough.

In this episode we use the recent events of Simone Biles pulling out of the 2020(1) Olympics Team competition in gymnastics and Osaka's recent admissions around mental health to talk about how we can be more sensitive and what are some tools to be a support in these situations.

There is also advice to parents, families, and coaches of athletes.

I also mention other resources and initiatives that are being formed and available as a result of the greater focus and acceptance of being able to talk about mental health.

As a society we can do more to support those in need and learn not to make light of someone's challenges just because it doesn't look like we think it should.

Mental health is called the invisible Injury because it looks different on everyone.

Please reach out to someone if you are struggling and let me know what you found valuable about this conversation.

Two resorces mentioned in the episode:

https://thelovelandfoundation.org this is for women of color needing mental health support that looks like them.

https://www.theconfessproject.com/ This is the initiative to train barbers to be the first line of defense for mental health so check this out to find out more info and to support.

Shea Hillenbrand brought the raw honest truth in Episode 4 about a side of professional sports that isn't talked about a lot.

This conversation was incredibly powerful in that we covered:

How to create your future

How to use the right energy to succeed and how negative energy might be keeping you from being great.

How to be accountable

What it's like to reach the pinnacle of a life long dream so early.

Why Shea walked away from baseball when he was at the height of his career.

How Shea faced wanting not to live anymore and how he found himself, a better way of life, and a new mission.
