Opera North
From the drawing board to the workshop to the stage, artists from Opera North's Resonance programme share their stories and their works in progress.
Resonance is Opera North’s workshop programme for minority ethnic professional music creators, working in any genre, and based in the north of England. Launched in 2017, it is part of PRS Foundation’s Talent Development Partner Network supported by PPL.
Immerse yourself in a musical journey across continents as Carnatic singer and composer Supriya Nagarajan ventures back to a childhood spent between Mumbai and Tamil Nadu, with the sound of lullabies, rice-pounding songs, Bollywood soundtracks and gossip filling the air. Join Supriya and her Resonance collaborator, Sri Lankan-born poet and translator Shash Trevett, as they create new music from their shared heritage of South Asian words and song. Turntablist and sound artist Nicole Raymond (DJ NikNak) and poet, playwright and literary activist Khadijah Ibrahiim uncover the roots of reggae, dub and sound system music in religion, ritual and culture, with the help of some classic songs, versions and dub plates from the https://www.pressure.co.uk/ (Pressure Sounds) catalogue. Woven throughout are excerpts from their collaboration during Opera North's Resonance workshop residencies in summer 2020, during which Nicole reworked recordings from Khadijah's audio archive, transforming them through collage, reverb, delay and scratching. From a Jamaican Rastafarian remembering Haile Selassie’s visit to the island to recordings of a Black British church choir, the finished series of https://soundcloud.com/opera-north/sets/dead-n-wake-dj-niknak-and-khadijah-ibrahiim (sound works) are rich in untold history and hidden culture.
