Dr. Maryal Concepcion is a Filipinx creator and connector. She discovered her love of being a cradle-to-grave family physician while at Creighton Med School on a rotation in Superior, NE. She trained for residency in Modesto, preparing to be a rural family doc, then moved to rural Northern CA after residency. She worked in the broken corporate model of medicine because she did not know any other option than to be employed.

Then, she learned about DPC, and the bands holding her wings were clipped. Now she flies free as a Direct Primary Care physician, able to practice medicine how she has always wanted to. With this freedom, she is charged up to share with other physicians the power of the Direct Primary Care model. She will tell any and all about DPC because the model is truly at the core of how we will take back healthcare.

Over the years, I have noticed that many physicians are falling into the trap of doing the same things yet expecting different results. And in this episode, I share with you pointers that will help you avoid falling into this trap as it is costing physicians a lot. Whether you are using the hope strategy or failing to implement what you learn, please note that this is not about judgment. The thing is, everything can change for physicians if we step out of our comfort zone, if we do things that we've never done before. And we don't have to have it all figured out!

In this episode, I talk about:

  • How physicians can avoid the trap that keeps them stuck.
  • Why physicians need to step out of their comfort zones and take action.
  • How the EntreMD business school was born and how I owned my role as a leader.
  • The opportunities that present themselves when physicians take action.

By now, you should be convinced (I hope!) that video is the most personal and engaging creative medium that exists today. The format allows you to make more human connections at a faster pace than ever before. With video, physicians can create explosive growth in their brands and businesses, and multiply their impact and revenue. But how does one create the kind of content that interrupts the conversations their audience is already having in their minds?

In this episode, I share the top secrets to creating binge-worthy content. The kind of content that works while you sleep, and leaves your audience hungering for more. I owe this episode to you guys because you created it - I literally took questions that physicians ask me about creating video content and flipped them. If you think people are more interested in cute or complex topics, you'd be surprised that they don't! By the end of the episode, you should come out with 5 actionable tips that will help you create the kind of content that will make your prospective clients want to work with you!

In a nutshell, I talk about:

  • Why your motivation for creating video content should be creating a win for your audience.
  • Having a healthy obsession with your ideal clients - learning about them, studying them, and figuring out what their pain point is.
  • How to turn your audience's questions into your topics.
  • Why (and how) you should practice disciplined speaking.
  • The power of consistency in creating video content.

.... and so much more!

Being able to show up live on camera is a skill. A skill that can be learned. And the best part? It's not tied to being an introvert or an extrovert. As an introvert who has done over 700 videos and hundreds of live sessions, I can assure you it is possible. I started out as a socially awkward, super shy, introverted introvert, and it took me two years from when I knew I should do videos for my business to finally do my first video. And I want to make sure that that is not your experience because the fastest way to grow your business is through video.

In this episode, I talk about:

  • The opportunity cost of not showing up on video
  • The relationship between fear and success
  • The power of putting in the reps
  • Embracing progress over perfection
  • Recognizing your inner critic as separate from you

.. and so much more!

Although parenthood is filled with many joys, it has its stressful and difficult moments too. For many parents, the difficult moments are when their children go through puberty. While the children may not understand what is happening to their bodies, their parents might not know how to start a conversation around this stage. Many opt to let their children gather information from the internet - which can be misleading.

In today's episode, I speak with Dr. Trish Hutchison, the co-founder of Girlology. Founded in 2003, Girlology was dedicated to making girls’ lives healthier. The community provides medically accurate, in-the-moment support needed to navigate the journey ahead with all the facts and greater confidence. Dr. Hutchison talks about how Girlology was founded and how they have adequately prepared girls (and their parents) for puberty. She also takes a moment to encourage physicians to find something they are passionate about and creating a platform to share their knowledge.

In a nutshell, we speak about:

  • The why behind Girlology
  • Why Dr. Hutchison and Dr. Holmes (co-founder) went the extra mile to start a company even though it is not the easiest thing to do.
  • The ways through which Girlology gets parents and their kids to have conversations about the changes one experiences during puberty.
  • How Girlology has pushed its mission to normalize body changes and people having conversations about them.
  • Doctors using their voices, owning platforms, and feeling a sense of responsibility to bring in the right information.

It all started when Katie Deming, MD, went undercover at a boutique near her office. As a radiation oncologist, Dr. Deming wanted to test first-hand the types of bras on the market for women who had undergone radiation therapy for breast cancer. What she saw made her decide that she was never going to send her patients to that boutique. The bras had all the wrong features - they were scratchy and had an elastic that would irritate the skin.

Despite having zero designer experience, Dr. Deming saw a gap that needed to be filled. That was just the beginning of her years-long journey that led her to create MakeMerry, a first-of-its-kind online shop with bras designed specifically for women undergoing radiation treatment.

In today's episode, Dr. Deming shares all about how she got started developing her clothing line and all she has learned along the way. Don’t miss out as she shares tips for starting your own business as a physician as well!

In a nutshell, we speak about:

  • How Dr. Deming decided to create a line of intimates for cancer patients.
  • What she has learned about owning a business that specializes in garments.
  • Some of the transitions that worked for her as she was starting her business.
  • How she used a licensing deal with another company to produce her garments without having to raise a huge amount of capital upfront.
  • The importance of branding and legally protecting your business.
  • Some of the huge wins she's had in her business.
  • How you can support her mission to change the lives of women undergoing radiation treatment.
  • How she manages to strike a balance between her business and her career.

Why is burnout so common among physicians? Is it because we are taught to work pretty much until we drop? Last year alone, 42% of hospital physicians reported burnout! This number is surprisingly high, given that we as physicians are constantly recommending mental health support to our patients. It's high time we normalized this kind of support too!

In today's episode, I am joined by Dr. Amelia Bueche, a DO who is a specialist in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. She is on a mission to nurture health and empower patients to realize their amazing inherent capacity. Dr. Bueche is the founder of This Osteopathic Life and also the brain behind Coaching For Institutions (CFI), a collective of physicians trained as coaches specializing in the creation and implementation of programs to bring health to medicine through coaching. Through these organizations, she is tackling the problem of burnout on an individual and institutional level. She discusses the biggest contributors to burnout and the power of coaching.

If you are looking to develop immunity against burnout and find success in your medical career, this episode is for you!

In a nutshell, we speak about:

  • Why Dr. Bueche decided to build a company that helps doctors and institutions tackle the problem of burnout.
  • Some of the early warning signs of burnout
  • The main causes of burnout among physicians
  • Important tips for doctors experiencing burnout.
  • How coaching solves the problem of burnout

While contracts are part and parcel of any doctor’s career progression, negotiating them can be an emotionally fraught process. Many doctors would rather not negotiate, leaving them voluntarily underpaid and undervalued. To help you get more comfortable with negotiation, I speak with Dr. Linda Street in today’s episode.

Dr. Street is not only a maternal fetal medicine specialist, but also a coach who specializes in helping women negotiate higher salaries, sign bonuses, and the other intangibles that sweeten the deal, regardless of whether you’re starting a new job or discussing the terms of a contract renewal. Dr. Street’s wake-up call came when she realized that her colleague was six figures more than she was, yet they were seeing pretty much similar clinical volumes! She had sold herself short when she signed her contract.

There is so much pain and suffering that goes into negotiating contracts. If you are ready to take control,  negotiate your contracts like a  boss and practice medicine on your terms, this episode is for you!

What You’ll Learn from this Episode:

  • How Dr. Street went from MFM to setting up a company to help doctors negotiate
  • Pitfalls that doctors fall into all the time
  • How doctors can take inventory of their value
  • The three things you have to look for in a contract before signing it
  • How mindset plays a key role in the skill of negotiating
