Also follow along at: Onefordemocracy.org @onefordemocracy

How will redistricting play out and what are the implications of the upcoming Supreme Court nomination. January 6 developments and consequences
Finalized Senate electoral map

This week, we return from a relatively quiet year end break to outline some of the make-or-break moments that are beginning to take shape:
Senator Chuck Schumer announced that the senate will debate and consider changes to Senate rules this month, considering whether we can change the filibuster and pass the freedom to vote act and John Lewis voting rights act.
An audit from the 2020 election in Texas was quietly released, but unsurprisingly found nothing out of the ordinary.
Plenty of states are finishing up new election maps, with considerable changes being made in California, Virginia, Georgia, and Michigan. While some maps appear to only be slightly gerrymandered, the balance of power is still dangerously shifting towards republicans.
Also follow along at: Onefordemocracy.org @onefordemocracy
This week, we watched momentum stall out in congress as the year comes to a close:
Senator Joe Manchin announced he does not support Biden’s social and climate spending plan, showcasing how polarization and bureaucracy can paralyze our democracy and leaving us questioning what the future of the bill may look like.
The Freedom to Vote Act is also waiting to be passed, and when it comes to affecting redistricting, every day that goes by decreases its impact over the 2022 midterms.
Looking towards the rest of the year, we continue to see redistricting maps get approved, with decisions and announcements from key states expected to come later this week.
Also follow along at: Onefordemocracy.org @onefordemocracy
This week was quieter than usual as we wait for decisions to come down before the year wraps up:
The House Special Committee recommended charging Mark Meadows with contempt of congress after phone calls, text messages, and even Powerpoints revealed Meadow’s had plenty of information ahead of January 6.
President Biden, Senator Schumer, and others have continued to lobby Senator Manchin to pass the climate and social spending bill before Christmas, but final, last-minute revisions are still coming in, making the process long and difficult.
If Democrats want to preserve the child tax credit, they need to meet the December 31st deadline, a hard date that could either work as a forcing mechanism, or end up blotting out one of Democrat's biggest political wins.

This week, we’re focusing on the senate’s upcoming final session, and looking towards the gubernatorial primaries and redistricting plans capturing our attention in the new year:
Chuck Schumer is facing lots of challenges as he aims to pass the Build Back Better bill and avoid extending the Senate’s final session of the year.
The Justice Department filed suit over Texas’ redistricting plan, with arguments claiming it was created with discriminatory intent. Currently, white Texan voters make up 40% of the population, but have a 60% majority vote over the districts, so this is definitely a case worth tracking.
We’re also keeping an eye on the gubernatorial primaries in Georgia after Stacy Abrams launched her campaign this week. On the republican side, David Perdue is running against Brian Kemp, and with a wildcard candidate also sticking around, it will be an intense race that may even get pushed into a runoff.
Also follow along at: Onefordemocracy.org @onefordemocracy
This week, we’re diving into the highs and lows of local and national news as the Senate is back in session after the holiday break:
Congress must fund the government before Friday, with a bunch of large finance measures on the agenda, including raising the debt ceiling, the National Defense Authorization Act, and the Build Back Better Act.
With fights over partisan and racial gerrymandering continuing, redistricting maps are entering their final stages, but new maps alone could determine if democrats will lose or win the House in 2022.
A unique case about the new North Carolina voter ID law is being heard by the Supreme Court. The case will cover voter suppression, but interestingly enough, will also determine who can challenge and who can defend laws on behalf of the state.
Also follow along at: Onefordemocracy.org @onefordemocracy
This week, we’re taking a look at the fluctuating tension between parties, highlighting the new bipartisan infrastructure bill, but also the increasing anti-democratic tilt from Republican leadership:
The bipartisan infrastructure bill passed the largest transportation bill in US history. While the bill is introducing tremendous upgrades to our roads, bridges, airports, and waterways, it still earned plenty of strong attacks from Trump loyalists.
Globally, frustration is boiling over the recent COP26 and UN Conference, where leaders made steady but slow progress against climate change, ultimately walking away with weak commitments that left advocates dissatisfied.
The Jan. 6 attack continued to make headlines this week: Steve Bannon turned himself in to the FBI, Mark Meadows ignored a subpoena and refused to testify, and Trump participated in an interview where he defended his supporter’s most aggressive threats towards Vice President Mike Pence. Regardless, the Republican party is doubling-down on support for the former president, and fiercely attacking any members who stand against his ideology.
Also follow along at: Onefordemocracy.org @onefordemocracy
This week, we’re reflecting on the tight elections from last week, and looking forward to the large impacts the infrastructure bill promises to bring:
Election Day results left political strategists to digest what worked, what did not, and why. Results revealed the divergent dynamics between progressive and moderate Democrats, and on the Republican side, the delicate dance being played between adhering to Trump’s agenda versus appealing to moderates.
There was an underwhelming response to the recent passage of the infrastructure bill, and now pressure falls on Biden’s promised timeline. If effects are felt in the promised 2-3 months, public approval of democratic leaders will increase, but there is also the risk that, oftentimes, the biggest impacts are the hardest to take in.
Finally, our legal system is also facing an urgent deadline to ensure political impact. With 6 new subpoenas issued to Trump campaign staff and advisors involved in the insurrection, we’re watching to see if our systems put in place will react and act fast enough to make an impact.
This week, we’re keeping an eye on Election Day and what recent global gatherings revealed about our political world:
Today was Election Day for many states, with results promising to inform key clues towards how to prepare for 2024 in a post-Trump world. In some key elections, democracy advocates are already eying how new voter suppression laws are unfolding.
Gerrymandering maps across the country continue to be finalized, with a redistricting commission in Ohio even purposefully missing deadlines to send the process back to the state legislature.
Global progress was made at both the G20 summit and COP26, where leaders agreed on a new global minimum tax, the world’s most aggressive attempt yet to stop companies from sheltering profits and tax havens.
Reproductive rights remain at the center of our political debates and elections to come after the Supreme Court fast-tracked arguments on the Texas Fetal Heartbeat Bill.
Also follow along at: Onefordemocracy.org @onefordemocracy
This week we're honing in on what could be the final steps of negotiations for Biden's budget proposal:
A version of President Biden's domestic agenda — even with reforms — promises major advances in the US, but still leaves us way behind plenty of countries in terms of social spending.
Two anonymous organizers from the Jan. 6th Stop the Steal rallies spoke with The Rolling Stone, revealing they held dozens of planning meetings with conservative members of Congress and White House staff.
Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen has brought many internal issues to light, including how Facebook worked to stop the spread of misinformation during the election, but then rolled back the emergency measures after the fact.
And finally, Biden cited he would be open to altering the filibuster, but some things remain beyond the reach of the Freedom to Vote Act.
Also follow along at: Onefordemocracy.org @onefordemocracy
This week we're looking at a week defined mostly by moments of political theater:
The Senate is expected to take up a formal vote on new voting rights legislation tomorrow which Republicans plan to block.
The January 6th House Investigation is getting great coverage but moving at a glacial pace as Trump is working to block the committee on multiple fronts.
Fights over majority minority district maps moving forward with lots of uncertainty and conflict brewing over more contentious districts.
And finally, as we continue to see the historic worker shortage driven by the combination of pandemic responses and outrage over economic inequality, labor unions have been flexing their muscles.

This week I’m keeping my eye on a few key issues:
In Arkansas, the Republican-run legislature passed the GOP's new congressional map,
Republicans in the Iowa Senate on Tuesday voted down congressional and legislative maps proposed by the state's nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency over the objections of Democrats.
Also at the national level, on Thursday, Senate Democrats introduced their own version of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (designated S. 4), which follows House Democrats passing their version of the bill in August (designated H.R. 4).
A $480 billion increase in the country’s borrowing ceiling cleared the Senate last week on a party-line vote after McConnel agreed Republicans would not filibuster a short term increase.
