MICK MARTIN confesses that a few years ago he thought, “I’ve never done a damned thing.” But then he took inventory of his life in blues.
“I thought, well who have I played with? Bo Diddley, Mick Taylor of the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Smith at Carnegie Hall, Elvin Bishop, Nick Gravenites - I mean on and on and on and on and on… at the time it was like, well I’m not getting anywhere.”
Mick is a Northern California music legend. He's packed his famous harmonica blues chops and vocal styling around the world. Still living in his hometown, Sacramento, he's been a TV and newspaper film critic and has hosted a weekly Blues Party radio show for decades, now heard online at 1960s legendary freeform FM station K-ZAP. At 75 Mick is still bringing down houses everywhere he takes his band, Mick Martin and the Blues Rockers.
This is a master class for radio in all markets. JOHN OSTLUND owns five stations in Fresno, California, because he loves radio. He remembers the recipe. He only runs five minutes of commercials per hour on all five stations and it works. John says, "Radio is too much fun."
At 31, DANIEL STARKS is the youngest radio station General Manager I've ever met. He's also one of the smartest guys I ever met in the business. Makes sense, right? Here he talks about his love of small-market radio and he brings with him serious major market experience.

Dallas radio listeners were recently shocked by the news that MIKE RHYNER, also known as The Old Grey Wolf, had been fired by iHeartRadio and that the talk station known as The Freak would flip back to rock and roll as it had been just 16 months earlier. Rhyner is a radio legend in Texas. Over his 26 years at The Ticket in Dallas, he created the most unique and popular sports talk format in America. To date, the station has won four Marconi Awards as the Best Sports Station in America. Rhyner was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame on July 3, 2014. In this conversation, he talks about how both stations evolved through him and what went wrong with The Freak.
ROBIN BERTOLUCCI has been Program Director of KFI, Los Angeles, for 22 years and the station has never fallen out of first place. The thing that's remarkable about Robin is she hasn't got a lot of complicated philosophies about her job or her station. She just gets the best people in the news and talk business and lets them do their thing.

Everybody who ever worked with CRYS QUIMBY adores her. She's smart, sensitive, a great leader and she knows news radio. Crys started her broadcast career doing TV news in Macon, Georgia. She soon found herself writing and editing at CBS news giant KNX in Los Angeles. She joined WBBM in Chicago, before returning to L.A. to oversee news and programming at KNX and KFWB. Eventually, CBS Radio bosses called her to New York, where she programmed WCBS until 2008.
Is radio dead? Don't suggest that to KJ ALLEN. He and his longtime radio partner BENJI KURTZ have assembled a fleet of stations in small Georgia markets and they are flourishing. Their motto is BETTER LOCAL RADIO. Their company, OCONEE COMMUNICATIONS is doing what radio has always done best: serving their local communities.
DAVE WILLIAMS and AMY CHODROFF were selected individually to co-host the KLIF Morning News in Dallas. Having never met they were thrown together in a small studio to sink or swim. In radio, as in life, forced partnerships don't always work. In this case, it worked wonderfully well for nearly 12 years. They started together and in 2023 retired together. DAVE WILLIAMS and BOB NATHAN became Sacramento radio partners in July of 1981. They soon had the highest ratings in Sacramento history, a record that still stands. When they changed stations to KFBK in 1985 their enormous audience, which they called The Dave & Bob Mob, moved with them. Great morning radio teams everywhere are long remembered by their fans. DEBORAH PARENTI was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame on November 2, 2023, three weeks before this conversation. It's easy to see why. She's as bright and energetic as they come. With a deep career in broadcast management, she is now the publisher of Streamline's Radio Ink. Here Parenti talks about why radio will never die, but she's also brutally honest about some of the industry's serious problems. She says radio needs to put its money where its mouth is and get back to what it does best.
In 1973 I was Program Director of K-Earth in Los Angeles, formerly KHJ-FM. Automated at the time, it was the oldies music creation of the legendary Bill Drake. Shortly after I started working there Drake was fired as Programming VP for RKO. KRTH GM Hal Rosenberg and I hired GUY ZAPOLEON to create new music lists and recordings to replace the Drake/Chenault package. In my recent conversation with Guy we drifted into our Paul Drew stories. He was, as we say with deep respect, a piece of work.
Guy Zapoleon is a modern music savant. For the past fifty years he has guided contemporary music radio stations and corporations in identifying the right songs to play at the right time to achieve their target audience goals. Along the way, he discovered a generalized pattern in which contemporary music trends rise from innovation to mass appeal and ultimately to a downturn he calls doldrums. Then, the cycle starts again. He's a music scientist and journalist; he's the ultimate source for radio music directors, artists, and producers everywhere.
If WALTER SABO (aka Walter Sterling on WABC) was a baker he wouldn't own a cookie cutter or a recipe book. Walter is an innovator. For all of his decades of creating and consulting media programming, he has never relied on a formula. When I asked him what's wrong with the radio business these days he had answers I didn't expect. He also emphasized what's right: "(Radio is) the most elegant distribution system in mass media. It's elegant, it's incredible."

JOHN KOBYLT has been half of the most popular talk radio show in Los Angeles for 36 years. Now his partner, Ken Chiampou, has announced his retirement. The famous John and Ken Show is about to become the John Kobylt Show. That's where we start this conversation, with the obvious questions: when and what can we expect?

SPIKE O'DELL is one of the legendary personalities who graced the airwaves of WGN, Chicago when it was simply the best small-town radio station ever to dominate a major metropolitan city. WGN Radio and Spike were rightly branded, "Chicago's own..." and today, nearly 20 years after he retired at the age of 55 he is still beloved in the Windy City and in Davenport, Iowa, the first city he owned by virtue of his remarkable talent. We start this conversation with "Spike at the Mike" at KSTT and conclude with a hilarious collection of bits he performed on WGN. Enjoy!
This episode opens with a wonderful recording of BOBBY OCEAN at his dynamic best on San Francisco's iconic Big 610, KFRC. It was 1983, forty years ago and nearly twenty years after the golden age of music radio was forged by Bill Drake and starring legendary deejays Bobby Ocean, The Real Don Steele, Robert W. Morgan, Charlie Van Dyke, and many others. Together these brilliant performers combined their unique individual talents with Drake's "More Music" branding to create the tight, high-energy sound still revered today as Boss Radio.
Now in his seventies, Bobby Ocean is healthy, happy, grateful for his blessings, and in awe of the Universe. Here, we talk about his Boss Radio days but we also veer off into astrology, metaphysics, and the Zen of billiards.

For 40 years he has played lead and bass while singing, writing, and producing for the legendary Steve Miller Band. Along the way, Kenny Lee has collaborated and performed with Bonnie Raitt, Eddie Money, Dave Mason, Billy Preston, Peter Frampton, Boz Scaggs, Brian Wilson, Steve Stills, and many, many others.
Kenny is a family man and an avid fly fisherman. He speaks of the Bible and of the paranormal; he's written a novel steeped in both.
He is a fountain of great tales.

TOMMY JOHN is a baseball legend. He was a four-time Major League All-Star and has the third-most wins (288) of any pitcher since 1900 not in the Hall of Fame. Ironically, that may be due to the fact that he is world-famous for the elbow surgery named for him that rescued his career.
He has nothing to do with the underwear company of the same name and says he won't watch major league baseball these days.
Tommy is a motivational speaker now. He lives happily in Florida with his devoted wife, Cheryl.
ANITA FAYE GARNER grew up a gospel gypsy, traveling across the South with her Pentecostal preacher father, Brother Ray Jones, her famous singer-songwriting mother, Fern Jones, and her reluctant brother, Leslie Ray. Before his music work began, JD was the midnight to dawn disc jockey on a highly rated R&B radio station that kept L.A. dancing the night away. Hinton began using improvisational skills he developed as a disc jockey to land acting roles in television and films. His name continually popped up starring on TV shows like “Dynasty”, “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”, “Mork and Mindy”, and recently in the hit show “Jane the Virgin” for CBS. In 2009 the city of Oakland, California, sent WALTER HOYE to jail for standing quietly outside an abortion clinic holding a sign that read, “Jesus loves you and your baby. Let us help.” Investigative journalist Robert Artigo wrote Walter's story, Black and Pro-Life in America.
