YDHWM is a daily hour long talk show based in Thurston County, WA that began on September 19, 2010. We record a new episode every day and you can be a part of the show by calling the phone number (360) 836-4384. Anyone can be on the program, especially you! There are no set topics, so guests can talk about whatever they want, it doesn't have to be entertaining or even interesting. It's about moving through time and making a record of every day, forever.
Quinoa is a flowering plant in the amaranth family. The part we eat is actually the seeds of the plant. It's a gluten-free pseudo-cereal that's as healthy for you as it is difficult to spell. You'll find out more about quinoa today on this episode of the program.
Longtime friend of the program Lisa Hurwitz is back in town and joins Rick on the couch! She was here around this time a year ago for the screening of her movie The Automat. Find what she's been up to and watch them both talk for an hour.

At the Thurston County Fair there are a lot of commercial booths. There's always someone selling gutters or siding. Most of the time it's only for home owners, but it always makes me thing: "How are my gutters doing?" As Rick continues to watch the fair tape we learn about gutters and see a cool solution that catches water but not debris!
This morning Rick and Freddy went to the Thurston County Fairgrounds and got a free pancake breakfast. The pancakes were made and served by the Thurston County Commissioners. Our friend Domenica and her baby Hatty joined us. We didn't record it, but Rick retells the story in vivid detail.

When we took a camera to Lakefair and Rick got a Lion's hotdog. They asked if he wanted cheese on it. He said yes. Turns out putting american cheese on anything is good idea!

Capitol Lakefair is a back and Rick has been eating a lot of Demo Burgers. He talks about the raising price and how he plans ahead each year to afford the burgers.

The Thurston County Museum of Fine Arts (TCMoFA) is a pop-up museum that transforms vacant spaces into temporary museum experiences filled with local art. This is the third iteration of the museum, the first one was right under the YDHWM TV Studio, where the arcade is now. The second one was at the old Orca Books spot on 4th Avenue and we sort of did an episode there too. This one is at the old Olympia Armory which used to have guns and tanks and all kinds of scary stuff in it. Now it's got art.
And also we are the art. YDHWM is here today as "performance art." We sit outside on a couch under a tent with all the gear we brought and talk over the speaker system to each other. Sometimes we look into the museum but the camera cable doesn't go very far. Rick, Freddy, Greg, and Amelia are here and we also meet a couple of the artists, organizers, and attendees of the museum! It's a very special episode of the program.
One of the VCR machines has been sort of eating the tapes a bit so on this episode of the program Rick takes matters into his own hands and does some surgery. You can learn a little bit about how to fix VHS tapes on this episode of the program, but it might not truly be the best video for that because it's a little difficult to see. But the operation is successful and the tape is going to go on and live a normal productive life after all.
You inspire me. I see what you do and it makes me want to do better too. Or maybe you're inspiring me not to do better, but to not try so hard. You inspire me to sit there in front of my TV and relax for an hour. Maybe you can be inspired too, just listen to this episode and find out!
Sometimes when I'm writing these episode descriptions I haven't really had a chance to watch the episode yet. Sometimes I'll guess what it's about based on the title and then later in person Rick will tell me that I pretty much got it wrong. I have a feeling that's what's going to happen today.
My first though was that this was going to be about a lotion made from goat milk or something? Then I realized that GOAT has been recently used as an acronym for greatest of all time. Maybe this is about the greatest cream of all time. Or maybe someone is using creamer for their coffee that is made from goat milk. No matter what it is, you know it's going to be a little strange.
It's the fourth of July today, Independence Day! The day where americans are free to set off fire works even though they are illegal within city limits. And other people are free to call the police on them, tying up emergency phone lines for everyone. I saw a lot of emergency vehicles today and my dog doesn't like fire works.
Anyway as you can imagine this episode of the program is pretty regular even though it's a holiday. Rick talks for 20 minutes for couch time at the beginning of the episode and then checks the phones an tapes. It's a regular episode of the program, but it's a good one!
How many fingers am i holding up? How many fingers do I even have left? The 3rd of July is a good day to count all your fingers because there are more fingers blown off on 4th of July than all other days of the year combined. Treasure whatever amount of fingers you have, and protect them. We'll count them again on July 6th. It's going to be a hot day today. Need to do some laundry that's too big to do at home? Or maybe you don't even have a washing machine where you live... Either way try to look at it as a little vacation, never go to the same laundromat twice! It's like traveling to a different country, but it's just a different washing machine! Just remember to bring you own soap.

We've got a fancy TCTV camera on the episode today so you can really see the numbers getting written down and chosen from the number bottle. Rick tried to get cash back by buying a small thing, but accidentally used the tap to pay option and the cashier wronged him. You've wronged me! Freddy shows up with The Book which he stole at some point to try and add pages. They talk to a YouTube watcher who lives here in Thurston County but doesn't have cable TV. It's the program!
There was a power outage all over Olympia and Rick had to reset the whole system! On the way down to the studio he bought some Fischer Scones and it's making him question the value of things. Can I pet your dog? It's the program!

Freddy's rear drum brakes went out on his 1996 Ford Ranger. On this episode of the program he finally fixed them! It might not be the most helpful car fixing video because there is no visual of the truck, the brakes, or the process. but maybe it's just good to wrap your mind around the overall mindset of fixing rebuilding drum brakes.
The program is a whole hour every time, and it has a slow relaxed pace to it by design. However if you are recording the program sometimes you have other things you need to do before and after the program. That ends up creating a strange situation where you rush as fast as you can to start the tape, and then sit calmly for an hour, only to get up and rush again when it's over. It's the program!

We used to pretend that we were recording in the future and confuse people by telling them it was actually Christmas on the day that we were recording a week earlier. Then on Christmas day we would say "Happy New Year!" Now we simply agknowlege the situation and try our very best to live in the present moment. What else can you do?
In 1946 Ernest Tubb wrote and recorded a song that said "There's a little bit of everything in Texas, just look around and you will see... There's a little bit of everything in Texas and a whole lot of Texas in me." His implication is that Texas is so big that anything you like about the other 47 states (at that time) you could also find those things in Texas (although maybe the little versions of those things). Hawaii and Alaska were not states at that time and I think they definitely have things that fall outside the realm of things you could find in Texas.

On the second Saturday of each month Thurston Community Media hosts a cool event at their studio over on the west side of Olympia, 440 Yauger Way. There's a free workshop and then it's time for Instant TV! Volunteers and staff run the equipment in the control room and members can just show up and record a show!
