Guest: Maryville High School Football Coach Derek Hunt

Folks that listen to this show know that I graduated from Maryville High School, one of the best high school football programs in the country over the past 20+ years. So I really wanted to have the head coach on the podcast.

This week, it’s another young athlete highlight…this time with a couple of stellar athletes from Knox Catholic High school.

Sydney Mains is a basketball player who has already committed to Florida Atlantic University, and she played a pivotal role in Catholic’s recent State Championship. She joins me on the podcast to talk about her recruitment process that led to her choosing FAU over some other options…

But first, I’ve got Braylon Harmon on the show. Braylon is an outstanding WR on the Catholic football team. He is a highly recruited player but hasn’t yet given his commitment. He actually shares is official top three list with me in the interview.

Braylon has worked out with D1 and he talks about how that has helped make him more successful on the field.

If you don’t know what D1 Training is, we do personal training, team training, corporate training…if you’d like to get your office set up with a fitness plan…adult bootcamp classes, youth developmental plans…and so much more.

Guests: Athletes from Knox County that won a state championship in '22 or '23. Also Mayor Glenn Jacobs (AKA Kane)

This week’s episode is pretty different from the rest of my podcasts, but it’s my second year doing a show from this event. Knox County’s Mayor is Glenn Jacobs…if you’re a wrestling fan, you probably know him as KANE. Well the past two years, he has hosted an event called the Mayor’s Night of Champions where he celebrates all of the state champions from Knox county in Knoxville TN…and we had a lot of them this year.

The event was held at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, and the Mayor invited me to come and interview a lot of the kids that were there. On this episode, you’ll hear my short interview with the Mayor about his sports history and you’ll hear from athletes that won a state title in ’22 or ’23 for:

Halls Wrestling, West Football, Catholic Women’s Basketball, Catholic Women’s Tennis, CAK Track, Farragut Cross Country, Fulton Basketball, and South Doyle Track…

This podcast is sponsored by D1 Training.

Guest: Todd Kelly Jr.

We often feature athletes from the University of Tennessee on this show…and I really love it when those guests are actually from the area. They can always speak to their experience of growing up right down the road from campus…and then what it was like when they actually put on the orange and white and became a Vol.

So, Todd Kelly Jr. is one of those guys, and now he’s still living in Knoxville and he’s continuing to make a real difference in the lives of sports fans in the area.

He does a free football camp with his foundation and the Zaevion Dobson Foundation every summer…so he joins the show today to talk about that, and just about what it was like for him going to Webb and then moving over to play with the Vols.

TK grew up training pretty consistently with D1, so he and my co-host Devin Driscoll talk a lot about that, as well.

If you don’t know what D1 is, they offer personal training, team training, youth developmental programs, adult bootcamp classes, and so much more .

Guests: Norah Jacomen and Paul Fisher

I really enjoy doing these young athlete highlights. I’ve been interviewing kids from East TN that have a really bright future in their sport. If you’d like to go back and check out some previous episodes, I’ve had athletes on from Johnson City, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Maryville, Gatlinburg…really all over the area.

Today I’ve got Norah Jacomen and Paul Fisher on the podcast.

Norah is an outstanding soccer player from Hardin Valley who will be a part of the WPSL team 865 Alliance this summer. She's committed to playing at Butler starting this fall.

Paul Fisher is joining the show as a bit of a change from what I normally do. I usually feature area athletes that have a bright future on the field…well, Paul has finished his high school football playing career (Knoxville Catholic) and now he’s focused on developing as a broadcaster. He’s got his sights set on building a career in sports…just from the broadcast booth, and not on the field.

Both of these kids have worked out at D1 for a long time. If you’re unfamiliar…D1 Training offers personal training, team training, youth developmental programs, adult bootcamp classes, and so much more.

Guest: Monica Abbott

Our guest on today's episode is one of the most decorated Lady Vols athletes of all time. She threw an amazing 23 no-hitters and six perfect games during her Tennessee career. Through four seasons at Tennessee, she posted 112 shutouts, 2,440 strikeouts and 125 games with 10 or more strikeouts. She also became the first pitcher in NCAA Division I history to record 500 strikeouts in four different seasons.

She went on to have a stellar pro career with x6 Japanese League Championships, x5 NPF League Championships, and she’s a x2 Olympic Silver medalist.

She just recently retired, and she’s written a book about her career. It’s called Rise and Shine, and it is available now. We talk a lot about that in the interview.
We also talk about her time at Tennessee, and she gives some great tips for young athletes that love to play softball or baseball. We even talk about training routines for those young athletes.

If you’re not familiar with D1 Training, we offer personal training, team training, youth developmental programs, adult bootcamp classes and so much more.

Guests: Megan Burleson (ETSU/Science Hill) & Dayne Davis (Tennessee Football)

Meg Burleson joins the podcast to talk about her high school playing experience at Science Hill in Johnson City, and also what her past few months have been like as she’s already enrolled and started training with the ETSU soccer team. It’s cool to hear from an athlete that can speak to the differences in a high school and college training program…because she’s literally seen both in the same school year.
Tennessee football player Dayne Davis has a short message for football fans in the Tri-Cities area, as well.

D1 Training is coming to the Tri-Cities later this summer.

Guest: Squirrel White (Tennessee Football)

If you follow Tennessee football, you got to see Freshman WR Squirrel White go off in the Orange Bowl. He developed a really tight on-field relationship with QB Joe Milton. So, I had Squirrel White on to talk about what we can expect from that relationship next season, and he talks about his recruiting process, and why he chose the Vols over in-state Alabama…as he’s from Birmingham.

We also try to assign some more animal nicknames to his teammates on the football team.

Squirrel White is going to be doing a football clinic at D1 in Chattanooga June 3rd, so we also talk about what folks can expect from that experience. If you’ve never been to D1, they’ve got Personal training, team training, youth developmental programs, adult boot camp classes, and so much more!

Guests: Mike Meyer & Laban DeFriese (865 Alliance coaches)

Last summer was a big one for soccer fans in East TN, and this one will be even bigger, if LOCAL flavor is what you like.
This summer, we’ve got a new NPSL team…which is basically parallel to the USL 2…and this team features almost all local players. Kids from Hardin Valley, Farragut, Maryville, Alcoa, Bearden and so on. It’s the new 865 Alliance, which will be the NPSL and WPSL clubs associated with FC Alliance in East TN.

We work a lot with their athletes, so I really wanted to have the coaches on to just talk about what fans can expect from this upcoming season…and what their experience has been like so far in this process. It was a pretty fun interview, actually. We met up at Orange Hat Brewing in Hardin Valley to record.

In addition to having an accomplished career as an athlete, his uncle is Danny Ainge…former player and now executive in the NBA. So that leads to some fun stories as well. Listen for when Erik tells of the time he played H-O-R-S-E with Charles Barkley.

Erik has a lot of experience with D1 as he’s trained and coached here in the past.

On this episode, you’ll hear from Tennessee Basketball player BJ Edwards, who is actually from East TN. He grew up in the Tri-Cities area and then moved to Knoxville for high school. BJ has trained at D1 for many years, so we talk about that experience and what his outlook is on the team and the upcoming NCAA tournament.

Curious about NIL? Well, I’ve got an absolute expert on this episode to talk about the inside-story. This person is more connected to NIL than any sports agency or coach in the country. She’s the Director of NIL for the University of Tennessee Athletic Department. As of right now, UT is the only school that has someone dedicated entirely to NIL.

Her name is Kat Jones and we work with her a lot on different deals. D1 Training is an obvious fit for NIL deals with college athletes, so I’m always reaching out to Kat for her thoughts on different deals I’d like to offer to current student-athletes.

The Chattanooga Red Wolves Academy is a youth soccer organization serving athletes in East TN and they’re directly tied to the USL1 team with the same name. The Red Wolves Academy is actually helping us put on a soccer clinic with two Tennessee Lady Vols players (Nolyn Bartholomew and Jaida Thomas)…that event is coming up soon, so I’ve got Luke Winter and Katie Phillips from the academy on the podcast to talk about that event and what all they do for youth soccer in the area.

And I’ve also got Caleb Hampton on today. Caleb is a two-sport high school athlete in the area that recently committed to Stanford to play football and baseball. Now, it was just very recently passed that high school athletes could earn NIL money, and Caleb was one of the first athletes I reached out to once that happened. He’s an incredibly interesting kid, and I think you’ll enjoy that conversation as we talk about his training as a big-time college recruit, and also about high school NIL as a whole.
