Sunday was so exciting, and we're kicking off the episode with our first reactions to our nephew getting baptized! We're talking about missions, generosity in the church, and a Bible character you might want to dress up as for the next "Dress like a Bible Character" event you go to (are those still a thing?)

Welcome back to the Sunday Recap! What the Lord was trying to speak to us during the service today was confirmed over and over and over again: Get ready, the King is coming! Throughout our opening, the song set, the message, and the altar call, the Lord was faithful to remind us of his return.

First, I got a little side-tracked talking about making sure the songs we sing are theologically correct, but we got back on track to talk about Bro. JJ's message.

"The question is not if you believe He's coming back, it's "Do you believe He could come today?""

Welcome back, friends! In this episode of the Sunday Recap, we're recapping the March Hope Kids' Service, and it's all fun and games until it's time to get serious. We start this episode with a game of "This or That" that we played during service to build community, but it will help you get to know the two of us as well!

We're recapping today's message, too, which was "I Believe Jesus Loves Me," and we've decided it's a message that adults need to hear just as much as kids do. In the message, I addressed three misconceptions that we sometimes have about God's love.

Thanks for listening!

Welcome back to the Heaven and Hale Podcast, the Sunday Recap Edition! This Sunday was all about Hope-- not Hope Apostolic, the place, but the Hope we have in Jesus. In Pastor Joseph's message this morning, he talked about three things that take away from our hope: panic, self-pity, and negativity. He also talked about three things that build up our hope: looking to Jesus, surrounding ourselves with the body of Christ, and an earnest prayer.

If you're at the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on, and make that knot hope: hope at the end of the rope.

We put God in a box, and we're not just talking about the things we want Him to do... It's what we believe about who He is. He is so much BIGGER!

This episode is chaotic, and we talk ALOT, but the premise is simple: we need to take the limits off God. Whatever your expectations, whatever your thoughts, your plans... He is greater.

"It's not a God-sized dream if you can do it without him."

Welcome to another Sunday Recap! Christina says this is our "Hot-Take" since we recorded this episode within minutes of ending today's service. We're sharing our song set (spoiler alert: it was about heaven), our favorite one-liners from Bro. Welcome back to the Sunday Recap! We're covering a lot of ground in this episode, so I'm adding some time stamps for you. We want to start by expressing our gratitude for the love and support poured out for our family over the past two weeks. You all are the real body of Christ-- thank you.

Pastor Joseph's message this week was about letting go of the past, and we can't talk about it without a deep dive into the cycle of shame, how the Lord works through our neuroplasticity (that's all Christina), and revisiting intensity vs. intimacy in our walk with Jesus.

But first, what does it mean that the Lord prays for us? How does that even work?

We're kicking off this week with our first actual recap of a sermon. This Sunday was definitely one of those "had to be there" kind of experiences, but we're doing our best to share it with you all. The sermon was "You Can Win: Changing Your Story," and we found out that we all may have a Goliath in our life, but we are not underdogs. Goliath brought a knife to a gun fight.

In a surprise turn, we also talk about what it means to be anointed, and the narrative that the Pentecostal church has created around that term.

"The oil did not flow for the strong, it flowed for the called."

Welcome back to another episode of the Sunday Recap! We're recapping the first service of the new year, and, well, sometimes things just get weird. We're trying really hard to de-mystify the process of what is goes on when something goes wrong, but we're a little mystified by it ourselves. In this episode we talk about how wonderful it has been to see the kids at our church learn how to pray, the identity shift from "a human having a spiritual experience" to a "spiritual being having a human experience," and why it's important to suit up in the armor of God.

"If you pray, baby you're a pray warrior."

"I've turned a corner, I know without a shadow of a doubt that God is not a man that he should lie, and because I know that I have hope for these things I've prayed for over and over and over again. God has a plan, and it is good!"

Welcome to the first episode of 2024! We're recapping Testimony Sunday, and it's the perfect way to start the year. PLUS my new cohost, my sister Christina, is on this episode with me! We're sharing a few testimonies from this morning, talking about the difference between flashy faith and gritty faith, wrestling with the idea that God doesn't always answer our prayers right away because He knows things that we don't, and rejoicing that Jesus is exactly who we need him to be in each moment of our life.

"There is a place set for us [in heaven] and I'm looking forward to it. We're one year closer to getting to sit around that table with him. And while we're waiting we get to enjoy it here. There's not a better life."

Are we officially old if being away from home at 8:11pm makes us anxious? That's where Joseph and I were when we recorded this episode after a jam-packed weekend of Christmas festivities (pun intended... we literally "jammed out" on instruments, and ate some cookies with jam in the center.... obviously still tired as I type this).

We're recapping our favorite cookies of the weekend, our favorite songs from the weekend, sharing our favorite Christmas songs of all time, and recapping the message from Sunday Morning.

Bro. Nate Young from Missouri was with us in services this weekend, and the message he brought was encouraging and right on time. Here's my favorite quote: "Just because God is silent doesn't mean he's not listening."

Enjoy this behind the scenes look of what it's like to be in ministry during the holidays. This will be the last episode of the year, so we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Yay for Episode 100! This year has been a journey for both the podcast and my home Bible study. I'm so thankful to have all the ladies that I've been studying with on Tuesday nights on this episode to talk about everything we've learned. By asking questions like "What do these scriptures teach me about Jesus?" and praying "Lord, correct anything I've misunderstood," our lives have been changed by Bible study. We hope, after listening to this episode, that it will be your heart's desire to start or join a home Bible study yourself!

Welcome everyone to another Sunday Recap! It's been an eventful few days around here, and I'm doing my best to recap it all for you. Pastor Joseph's message today was "Limping Between Two Opinions," and it was taken from 1 Kings and the account of Elijah when he asks the crowd to choose between the Lord and Baal. As it turns out, the world we're living in today is very similar to the world of 1 Kings, and we all have a decision to make! As we learn in this episode, it's not to late to decide today!

I would love for you to read the book of Luke with me this Christmas season. Each day there will be an episode where I will read a scripture from that day’s chapter and try to remind us all to keep our eyes on Jesus. Let's take a moment to pray.... but for what? Maybe you have the Lord's prayer from the gospel of Matthew memorized, well Luke gives us instruction on that too! The Lord's prayer is a great outline for how to pray, but following these scriptures in Luke are more familiar scriptures that we have come to love: "Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you." As it turns out, these scriptures weren't written for you to just ask for anything you want...

Yay! It's Friday, and the weekend is here! In December, that often means running around and doing all. the. things. Maybe you just need a few quiet moments to focus your eyes on Jesus. I'm glad you're here. In Luke 8, we see that Jesus truly is a great teacher. He sees that his disciples need another lesson in faith, and Jesus knows just the people to help teach that lesson!

When I think about what I need, and what I want to provide for you, my listeners, it’s this: a quiet, still moment, to center myself, and readjust my focus, to put my eyes back on Jesus, my thoughts back on Jesus every day. It feels so cliche to say “He’s the reason for the season,” but He is! And I want this podcast to serve as a reminder of that.

One of my favorite questions to ask when I read the Bible is "What does this section of scripture teach me about Jesus?" The answer to that question for me in chapter 7 is that He is compassionate. This episode dives into four different ways Jesus shows his compassion in Luke 7!

During the month of December, I like to read the book of Luke. Honestly, mainly because it’s 24 chapters and I can read the whole book if I read one chapter a day. But also because it’s a book written to the Gentiles, and a sweet reminder that Jesus came for all of us, and that he came, ultimately to die as a final sacrifice for our sins. The birth of Jesus would mean nothing if it weren’t for his death and resurrection that happened some 33 years later.

In Luke 6, we find Jesus with his disciples picking, and eating, grain on the Sabbath day gasp. Jesus's response: I am the Lord of the Sabbath.

What does that mean for us today?

Welcome to another episode of the Heaven and Hale podcast. I’m doing something a little different today. During the month of December, I like to read the book of Luke. Honestly, mainly because it’s 24 chapters and I can read the whole book if I read one chapter a day. Today we're reading Luke 4. Consider this as you listen: Jesus was tempted, what does that tell us about when we are tempted? How did Jesus combat temptation? Also, Jesus' temptation is often referred to as his "preparation for ministry." What does that tell us about our temptations?

Hi everyone! Welcome back to another episode of the Heaven and Hale podcast, this is the Sunday recap. We’re just home from the first Sunday of December, and so many things came together in this morning’s service. I don’t know if this has ever happened to you, but literally what I read in my personal Bible reading this morning went along with the worship set, went along with the message, and then Joseph and my sister, Christina, both testified to how things the Lord has been dealing with them on tied in to the service, and just the whole service was a testament to me that God is real, the way He works is more than a coincidence, and most of all, He has a plan. A plan for me personally, and a plan for His church! I am just so encouraged!

Scriptures referenced in this episode:
Colossians 3:23-25
Philippians 3:13-15
2 Kings 13:14-19
Proverbs 4:25-27
Ecclesiastes 9:10-11

You ARE a Bible reader.

Welcome to another episode of the Heaven and Hale podcast. I’m doing something a little different today. It’s December 1st, the holiday season is upon us, and for many people the Christmas season is completely overwhelming. When I think about what I need, and what I want to provide for you, my listeners, it’s this: a quiet, still moment, to center myself, and readjust my focus, to put my eyes back on Jesus every day. It feels so cliche to say “He’s the reason for the season,” but He is! And I want this podcast to serve as a reminder of that.

Okay, so what are we going to do? I would love for you to read the book of Luke with me this Christmas season, and each day there will be an episode where I will read a scripture from that day’s chapter and try to remind us all to keep our eyes on Jesus. This will be different from the study we did on the book of Romans. When we studied Romans, my goal was to show you how to use all the tools and tips for Bible study, this is more like an Advent of podcast episodes, maybe five minutes each day… which means I’m out of time for this one, so let’s read some scripture.

You ARE a Bible reader.

Hey everyone! Welcome back to another episode of the Sunday Recap! This Sunday, Pastor Joseph preached on Psalm 122. It says, "I was glad when they said unto me, "Let us go into the house of the Lord!" Which begs the question.... "Why?" Why was David glad? We're breaking down four reasons why David might have been glad to go to the house of the Lord.

This is such a special episode, my sister Rebekah is on the podcast with me today, as well as my two nephews, Micah and Isaiah. We’re talking about what it looks like to teach the next generation about Jesus.

Sometimes it’s intimidating to think that we hold the responsibility of teaching our children about Jesus because we don’t feel confident in our own knowledge of the Bible. Rebekah reminds us that children don’t know what we don’t know… so start with what you know, and learn along with them, even if that means reading a childrens’ Bible with them.

The most important thing to remember when we’re reading the Bible is that it is a book about Jesus, and every story we read (even if it’s in the lift-the-flap Bible) teaches us something about Him!

“We are the gatekeepers of our homes.”

At the end of the episode, my nephews join me to talk about their favorite Bible stories from Genesis to Revelation, and they lay down some truths they've learned about God that us adults should probably take notes on!

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.

I'm back with the Sunday recap, and today we're digging into Pastor Joseph's message on "A Good Soldier." 2 Timothy 2:3 says, "Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Soldiers don't get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them."

A good soldier is faithful, a fighter, knows his enemy, knows his weapons, and looks out for his brother!

"This ain't Halloween, it's not time to play dress up. It's time to be the church."

Scriptures referenced in this episode:
2 Timothy 2:1-7
Joshua 24
Judges 2:10
Ephesians 6:13
Hebrews 10:24

When we think about people in the Bible who were men and women of prayer, Job might not be the first one that comes to mind, but he was a man of prayer, and more than that, God trusted him.

How do we know? God sent those three "friends" of his to Job to have him pray for them. The question now is "Can God trust us?" In Sunday's message, we talk about the power of a regular prayer life and staying firm through suffering.

"I'd rather have someone pray for me who has a daily habit of prayer than someone who prays for six hours on Sunday."

"It's the highlight of my week, the highlight of my life to lead someone to Jesus."

Sis. Ashley Perry leads 8 Bible studies a week, and that's on top of her roles as wife, mother of four children, pastor's wife, and student (just to name a few). In this episode, Ashley and I talk about her passion for leading Bible studies, where it came from, and how she is passing it on to her children. We talk about how to make personal Bible study and giving Bible studies a priority. The bottom line-- there are no excuses.

It was my absolute honor and privilege to be able to sit down and recap this morning's service with Bro. Stephen Tolman from San Pedro, Mexico. In this episode he shares about the work the Lord is doing in Mexico, and how it grew from 10 churches with roughly 2800 people to 17 churches and 6000 people DURING the Covid pandemic. We talk about witchcraft, how it has been normalized in our culture, and the threat that poses for our families and churches. We wrap up our conversation with Bro. Tolman sharing his personal plan for reading the Bible.

"We have stopped challenging our kids and tried to entertain them. God didn't call us to entertain our children, he called us to disciple them."

Exodus 12:13 says "The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.".... but that was approximately 1500 years before Jesus came, and approximately 3,500 years before you and I came along, so why is it a big deal to us today?

In this episode, I'm recapping Pastor Joseph's message, "When I See the Blood," including three main points from the message:
1. The purpose of the blood
2. The effectiveness of the blood
3. The application of the blood

There are several scriptures referenced in this episode, so I'm listing them for you here!
Exodus 12:12-13
1 Peter 1:18-19
1 John 1:7
Romans 3:23-24

Got church notes? In this episode, I'm joined by my cousin and friend, Rachel Pitts to reminisce on some of our favorite sermons, one-liners, and "sillies" from years of taking notes in church. More importantly, we talk about how to use the notes you take on Sundays to encourage others (and to encourage yourself) and to improve your Bible study. It's a super fun conversation that I'm sure many of you will relate to!

We've got a special guest on the podcast today: Bro. Harold Mauldin, Pastor of Grace Apostolic Church in Hot Springs, AR. Bro. Harold was in town to help our church celebrate 25 years of Hope, and it was the perfect opportunity to have him on the podcast. We cover all kinds of topics in our conversation today (except for what we actually planned to talk about) from how the church has changed in the past 25 years for better and for worse, to how to make a friendship within the church work.

This Sunday we celebrated 25 years of Hope Apostolic! While there are plenty of wonderful memories to celebrate, we spent most of the day in a posture of gratitude, giving thanks to Jesus for all He has done in the past 25+ years! Pastor Harold Mauldin from Hot Springs, AR was with us this weekend to help celebrate, and I'm recapping his message about Hope in this episode.

"Whatever you face is just a season. It does not define you, but it will refine you."

There's an invitation from me AND from the Lord in this episode. You may have heard Matthew 11:28 before... "Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

... but what about the next verse? "Take my yoke upon you..." Does Jesus want us to rest, or does he want us to work? The better question might be, "What is the work that Jesus wants us to do that will lead to rest?"

The answer is in this episode!

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.

"When you get here [death] it's too late." That's what Joseph's Mawmaw told us last week, so this week we're making sure everyone knows what the Bible says about salvation before it's too late!

The sermon this morning was based on Hebrews 2:1-5, and focused on three main points: what was spoken by the Lord, how it was confirmed by those who heard Him, and how God bears witness with signs and wonders.

There are a lot of scripture references in this episode! Here's a list in case you want to check them out!
Hebrews 2:1-4
Matthew 16:15
Mark 16:16
John 7:38
Acts 1:12
Acts 2:12-14
Acts 2:38

We spent this weekend at a funeral, but oddly enough every message, every song, every scripture fit right in with what I've been studying lately! Death is not the end for those of us who are filled with the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is the earnestof our inheritance(what in the world does that mean?) and to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (how does that line up with everything else we know?) Hopefully this episode will answer a few of your questions about death and what comes next for the believer.

Everyone answer this question to yourself: Who is Jesus?

We had our first Hope Kids Service of the school year, and we are building on the basics. We had so much fun, and I definitely share about some of the fun and crazy things we did today, but we got serious when it came to the Word. The world is doing it's job of teaching our kids (and us too, honestly) that we all worship the same God and that there are many ways to get to Heaven, so it is our job to make sure our kids know (and we know) that JESUS is the one true God, and He is the ONLY way to Heaven. I'm breaking it all down in this episode, and we're talking about everything from ice breaker games to gnosticism. Haha!

Here are a few scriptures referenced in today's episode:
John 14:5-9
Colossians 1:15
Deuteronomy 6:4
John 14:6
John 10:9
Acts 4:12

This Sunday Recap comes straight from John 15 and Jesus' teaching on the fruit, the branch, and the vine. Just so we have it straight, Jesus is the vine, and we are the branches, and we can't produce good fruit unless we abide in him!

In this episode we talk about everything and how it relates to this message from gardening, to soul winning, to next steps. I also shared a song we sang this morning that I absolutely love called "If the Lord Builds the House" by Hope Darst and a new app I'm using to take notes called "Notability." Pastor Joseph preached a FIERY message Sunday Morning (but in the best way). This recap is all about looking at some very familiar scriptures in a different light. Remember that old Matthew West song? "I don't want to go through the motions/I don't want to go one more day"

It happens to the best of us, but thankfully we have a Savior who has seen it before and made a way for us! In this episode, I'm recapping Pastor Joseph's message on Micah 6:1-8, and it's all about overcoming those routines, rituals, and traditions that we often put in place of our relationship with God.

Praise the Lord! I'm praying for a safe school year for all our back-to-school friends, physically, mentally, and spiritually. Today's message at Hope was all about teaching TRUTH to the next generation. The world would like to tell us that truth is subjective, that we can all have our own version of the truth, but that's just not the case! What are we going to do? We have to put the weapon of the Word of God in the hands of the next generation.

Don't understand the Bible? Maybe you just need to read from a different translation! It's so easy to access different translations of the Bible, especially with the Bible app or on the internet. However, I want you to be knowledgeable and wise about your decision on which translations to use.

In this episode, I'm sharing the details on the AMP (Amplified Version), GW (God's Word), and NIrV (New International Reader's Version). I'm also talking about some Bible study helps like the parallel Bible, the Life Application Study Bible, and the Blue Letter Bible website, which has lots of commentaries for you to read!

Foreboding joy, the original sin, David's mighty men, and fallen trees... that's what this episode is all about.

Have you ever experienced a day, or a moment, just so good that you worry something bad will happen? That's foreboding joy, and I'll tell you why I'm feeling it today. Then, I'm recapping today's message. I took so many notes, because it was SO good! The message was all about taking a stand, even when everyone else has fallen or run away. We learn how to stand from Shammah, one of David's mighty men in 2 Samuel 23 (you should go read about him!)

Today is our final day with the book of Romans, and we will be covering all of chapter 16. I don’t know about you, but it has been life changing for me. I’m not trying to be dramatic or boastful at all. When I tell you that the scriptures we have studied here come to my mind daily, I mean it. I don’t want it to be over, and it’s not, for me! I’m actually going through Romans with my home Bible study group as well, but at a much slower pace. We’re studying a chapter a week, so I’ll be in Romans for the next three months! Thank you Jesus, because I don’t want to be done with it, and I don’t think it’s done with me.

I don’t know when I’ll do another reading plan, but I hope that this one has helped you to see how all of the tips and tools for Bible study that we have talked about on this podcast come together to make Bible reading more enjoyable and understandable. We’ve used perspective, we’ve talked regularly about our purpose for reading by asking “What do I learn about God from this?” We’ve talked about prayer and how to incorporate it into our studying, we’ve read from different translations, I’ve shared a few different commentaries and study helps that I use, and I definitely think we’ve had to be patient. You can do it! You don’t need my help. Go ahead and pick your next book, and start reading and studying on your own, or with a friend, or, my personal favorite way to study, with a home group!

Speaking of friends, the past few days of study have been about relationships, and what chapter 16 shows us is that Paul was more than fit to teach us on the topic. He mentions so many people by name in this chapter, but I don’t want that to scare us off. This isn’t like the genealogies listed in the Old Testament. Those are important too, and they have their place in our Bible studying, but this chapter gives us a little more context for some of those names. We won’t talk about them all, but I do want to point out a few.

Today we are reading Romans 15:14-33, and friends, it is the beginning of the end. We have entered the “Closing” section of Paul’s letter form. This is where he tells those he is writing to about his plans, where he is, where he is going, and in the final chapter he will do a lot of name dropping. We will talk about that tomorrow. I love verse fourteen. I hope this won’t be the last or only letter you read, written by Paul, because the more you read of Paul’s writing, the more you hear his personality. I’m just thinking about all the really tough stuff that Paul wrote in this letter. Some of it was really difficult for me to swallow, so I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been to read and put into practice for the people to whom he was writing. People whose entire lives had been turned upside down by the life of Jesus and the grafting in of the Gentiles. Of course, when I say it like that, maybe we have more in common with them than I allow myself to think. Every one of us, if we don’t feel like the life and teachings of Jesus has turned our life upside down… well, we might be doing it wrong. And I wouldn’t be here talking about this today if the Gentiles hadn’t been added into the family tree.

Anyways, all of the things Paul has said throughout this letter, and then chapter 15, verse 14, “I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another.” Seriously Paul?! Then why did you have to get so serious back in, you know, chapters 1-11? Well verse 15 tells us why. “But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God.”

Paul had a job to do, and he knew it.

Alright, let’s jump into chapter 15. The first few verses of chapter 15 are a continuation of the conversation we’ve been having on recognizing differences and disagreements and how to live at peace with one another. Notice I didn’t say, “how to resolve differences and disagreements.” A lot of times we think of unity in the body of Christ as uniformity, and that’s not what God intended at all. We all bring something to the table, and we have to learn to recognize the differences in each other (chapter 14), welcome each other (chapter 14), and lift each other up (that’s chapter 15). Let me just go ahead and read a few verses for us. Romans 15:1 says, “We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.”

Today we are finishing up chapter fourteen with the last ten verses, verses 13-23. Yesterday we talked about what to do when we disagree with other members in the body of Christ, or in the church, and today we’re going to finish that conversation. In the first part of the chapter, Paul tells us we need to be convinced of what we personally believe, we need to live with the knowledge that we will answer to God about our choices, and regardless of where other believers stand, we need to welcome them. We mentioned yesterday that welcoming others who disagree with us puts us in a place of humility. The scriptures we will read today support that a little more. I’m going to read verses 13-15, because in them, Paul uses himself as an example, and I think the scriptures speak for themselves.

“Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling clock or hindrance in the way of a brother. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love.”

I cannot believe I am saying this, but ya’ll we are winding down with Romans! We just have four more episodes after today. Today we will talk about the first part of chapter 14, verses 1-12, and tomorrow we will finish the chapter. We are still in the “paraenesis” or the “practical application,” section of the book, and it has really been all about our relationships with God and others. As an elementary school teacher, something our district level admin used to tell us all the time is that having good classroom management is all about relationships, relationships, relationships. I heard that so. many. Times. The same is true for the church. I might not use the word “management” here, but healthy church culture is all about relationships, relationships, relationships, but what do we do with that knowledge?

It’s one thing to know that relationships are important, and even to keep a good relationship going and a totally different thing to know how to manage a relationship in the midst of disagreement. The skill of conflict resolution was IMPERATIVE to the saints in the Roman church, and Paul addresses it here in chapter fourteen.

You WILL be changed by what you learn.

Today we are reading Romans 13. It is just 14 verses, so we will talk about the whole chapter today. Romans 13 is really a continuation of chapter 12. You probably know this, but the men and women who were inspired by God to write the Bible (Paul in this case), did not write in chapters and verses. The letter to the Romans was just that, a letter, and when it was translated for us, the organization of chapters and verses and subheadings came along. If you want to know more about Bible translations, those are some of my favorite episodes here on the podcast, episodes 8 and 10. After we get through the summer reading plan, I might come back and do another episode with a few more translations! Anyways, that’s why it’s a good idea to read the chapter before and after the chapter you are reading when you’re studying, because sometimes they go together.

So chapter 13 is a continuation of chapter 12 because it’s talking about one more relationship that will be affected by our transformed life: our relationship with the state, or you might say government or authority.

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

I’m calling today Romans 12 Part II because we are really just talking about all of chapter twelve again, in light of what we talked about yesterday, which is that you can’t have chapter twelve without the eleven chapters that come before it. Chapter twelve is the beginning of the practical application section, the Paraenesis, and it’s pretty easy to read and comprehend compared to the first eleven chapters. However, if we were to just pull out chapter twelve and read it on it’s own, you know what it would look like? A checklist, and checklists don’t belong anywhere near our relationship with God or our relationships with others. The power in chapter twelve is that Paul is telling us that all of these things are the result of a transformed life.

One of my favorite Bible commentators, Warren Wiersbe, divides this chapter into three sections. Verses 1-2 are about how our relationship with God is changed when we present ourselves to God, verses 3-13 are all about our relationship with other believers, and verses 14-20 are about our relationships with our enemies.

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

Paul spent the first eleven chapters in just deep, theological thought, but then he gets to chapter twelve and it’s like “Okay, now let me put the kid gloves on.” There’s a good reason for that, and it’s not just something Paul does in his letter to the Romans. In fact, this is part of Paul’s writing style.

I need you to remember allllll the way back to the first episode (it might have even been the introductory episode) when we talked about Paul’s letter form. After the body of the letter, Paul includes the “Paraenesis,” which means “practical application,” and the closing. Chapter twelve, the chapter we’re talking about today begins the “Paraenesis.”

We won’t dig into this chapter too much, because it is really just “practical,” but I do want to point out one of my favorite words in the Bible here. 12:1, it’s a great verse and worth reading– “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” My favorite word is in this verse, and it is “Therefore.” I know it’s weird, but as we say in elementary school, “Anytime you see a therefore, you have to ask, “What is it there for?”” Therefore means “that’s why,” and there are four instances of “therefore” in Romans. You’ll have to look them up yourself after this. The reason I love this word is because it makes sense, and when you see it, you know what to do. Go back and look at what the text said before and then put “that’s why” where you see the word “Therefore.” So let’s do that.

You WILL be changed by what you learn.

I am so excited to wrap up chapter 11 with you all today, and talk about all the things I didn’t get to talk about yesterday. But first, let’s review. Do you remember what the metanarrative is? A metanarrative is an overarching account of events and circumstances, or stories, that provides a pattern that explains all the little stories it encompasses. And the metanarrative of the Bible is Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration. In chapter 11, we see the same pattern for the Gentiles! I told you a couple of days ago that every now and then we get a glimpse of ourselves in scripture. Here we are! And by “we” I mean the Gentiles.

Verse 15 tells us that the Jews’ rejection of Jesus means the reconciliation of the world. That’s restoration! I told you yesterday that we would learn some really great and amazing things about God in this chapter, too. And there are going to be a few scriptures that confirm, even more, what we have learned about him already in the book of Romans… well that’s in this section here.

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.

We are wrapping up this section today and tomorrow. Chapters 9-11 all belong together because they answer that “essential question” we’ve been talking about for days: “What about the Jews? What about God’s promise to Israel? How does that fit in with the Gospel message?” So, today we will read Romans 11:1-12, and tomorrow we will finish chapter 11.

This chapter was really hard to split into two sections, so If you haven’t read it yet, I would read the whole chapter. Paul begins the chapter by telling us about this remnant of Israel, then he takes a break to address the Gentiles, but then he’s going to come back to his original topic. This is a really good opportunity, though, to use a big scholarly Bible study word. I know I’ve mentioned here on the podcast before that when we study the Bible, something we should ask ourselves is “How does this fit into the big picture of the Bible?” Well there’s a fancier word than “Big Picture” that we could use and it is the “Metanarrative.” A metanarrative is an overarching account of events and circumstances, or stories, that provides a pattern that explains all the little stories it encompasses. Was that clear as mud? Let’s use this section to figure it out.

Today we are finishing up Romans Chapter 10, reading verses 14-21. Yesterday we began talking about Israel’s rejection of Jesus, which begs the question: How, if all the law and the prophets of the Old Testament pointed toward a savior, a messiah, how did they miss him? Why did they not accept Jesus as the one they had been waiting for? Paul gives us plenty of answers as to why in the first part of this chapter. They had a zeal for God, but it wasn’t based on knowledge of who He was (is). They were self-righteous, and most of all they didn’t understand their relationship with the law. They thought it could save them, and if the law could save them, why would they need a savior?!

Well, that was all in part one. In the second part of this chapter, Paul tells us there is one reason they will not be able to use as an excuse for why they don’t accept the Gospel.

Today we are talking about Romans 10:1-13. It’s not a lot of scripture, and I don’t think it will take very long to talk through what’s going on here, but I do think we have a great opportunity to point out a very important Bible study mistake that a lot of us make in what we will read today. Let’s just say we have been reading Romans and maybe we missed a couple of days of reading, or maybe we overslept so we’re just listening to chapter ten on the way to work, or we’re reading the chapter really quickly before we go to bed so that we can check “read my Bible” off our spiritual to-do list. It happens. It happens to all of us. I’m not shaming anyone here, I just want to point out something that might happen if we’re not paying attention.

Yesterday we started a section that will answer a big question for Jewish Christians. Do you all remember in elementary school when the teacher would write the “Essential Question” on the board? Or is this just something I remember and know about because I taught elementary school. In every curriculum there are different units of study. For instance, one unit I taught in third grade was about the Native Americans. There would be an essential question that we would try to answer throughout the whole unit. In our Native American unit, the Essential Question was “What was unique about each of the various Native American tribes?” But then each lesson or every few lessons would have their own essential question. Lessons 1-5 of the Native American unit answered the question, “How did Native Americans find food in their various climates?” So why am I telling you all of this. It’s because chapters 9-11 of Romans have their own essential question. The question Paul is trying to answer in this section is “If Jesus was really the Messiah promised in the prophetic writings of Jewish scripture, then why did they reject him?”

Romans 9 is a difficult chapter to swallow, there are some verses in here that make NO SENSE, even compared to some of the other things we have read previously in this book! Let’s just go ahead and pull these verses out right up front: Romans 9:15 “For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” and then verse 18, “So he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.” If I just take these two verses and gather meaning from them, I might come away thinking that it is already predetermined whether I will receive mercy or not. Or that God picks and chooses who he wants to show mercy to and who he won’t show mercy to. That doesn’t align with what I believe about God. I thought he was merciful to everyone. I thought the Bible says that it’s not his will for any to perish, but that all should come to repentance.

So what do we do with scriptures that challenge us, that challenge what we already know to be true? I have to do the "back-up."

You all know I love a good Bible study resource, and you also know that one of my favorites is the Halley’s Bible Handbook. It literally gives a summary of every chapter of every book of the Bible. Halley’s broke chapter 8 into five sections, and we’re recapping it in two episodes, so all this to say, we’re covering a lot of scripture in each episode. I’m just hitting a few key spots, and really we could come back next week or next month and read it again, and I might think something else is key. What I’m sharing is what stands out to me this time through scripture, but if you ever have a question or something you want to share with me, you absolutely can! Send me a message!

Alright, so how is this section divided up? Verses 18-25 talk about the suffering of all creation. Verses 26-30 talk about the intercession of the Spirit, and verses 31-39 are the famous “Nothing can separate us” verses. Let’s look specifically at verses 31-39, some of the most beautiful verses in scripture. We’ve mentioned a lot of the “Ps” of BIble study over the past few days, perspective, prayer… Today let’s talk about “Purpose.” Our purpose in Bible study is always, always, always, first and foremost– what can we learn about our God? That’s why we pray “God teach me something about you that I haven’t learned before,” and even “correct anything I’ve misunderstood about you.” We study the Bible because we want to know God more.

So what does this section teach us about God?

Y’all we made it to one of my favorite chapters in all of scripture, Romans Chapter 8! You know, I told you that chapter seven was a tough one for me to get through, but I think it has made me appreciate chapter eight even more. When we think about everything we have read from chapter one to chapter seven, ending chapter seven with such a great description of the war, the struggle raging within us… the news we get in 8:1 is sweeter than ever. I read the very first verse, and I had to just stop right there and say, “Thank you Jesus!”

Now, Paul loves a good illustration, and he’s given us many to describe our relationship with the law, but in this next section of chapter 8 he gives us an illustration of adoption, and I want to share with you some perspective on this section.

Welcome back to the Summer Reading Plan, today we are finishing up chapter seven, and y’all, I know it’s been deep. I feel like we’ve been trying to walk through quicksand, but I also feel this Word changing me, and changing my heart. Try not to get stuck, keep moving forward. You don’t have to understand everything, every single detail, everyday. Lord knows I don’t! Just try to find one thing to hang on to, even if it’s the smallest detail, and make sure you’re using all your tools. I’m not necessarily talking about summaries, and commentaries, and videos, even though those are great. Yesterday, I told you how Joseph reminded me to use my tool of “Perspective.” Today, I want to remind us to use the tool of “Prayer.”

You ARE a Bible reader.

Today we are talking about the first part of Romans chapter seven, verses one through twelve. I have got to say, up front, that chapter seven has been the HARDEST chapter to get through, for me. I read chapter seven multiple times, and I looked at all my resources, and I sat down to write some notes, and I just had nothing. I kept asking myself, “Do I really understand this?” I took my Bible and sat down with Joseph at his desk, and said I think this is what I’m reading, but I want to make sure. And then, Joseph used my own tools against me. He said, “Anna, you have to step back and remember who Paul was writing to, and why he was writing.” Well played Joseph, well played.

So I’m here to remind you that Paul is speaking to the church in Rome, made up mostly of Jewish Christians, and the most important thing to note here is that Paul didn’t know if he would ever make it to Rome, so he wrote this letter and gave it everything he had. He’s leaving no stone unturned, no corner unswept, if you will. I’ve heard it said that we don’t read to just get through the Bible, but we read to get the Bible through us. It’s like Paul is saying, “You’re going to get this concept through your thick skulls if it’s the last thing I do.” We are born into sin, every single one of us. We need, desperately, a savior.

Paul does this in chapter seven through an illustration about marriage... pretty simple, right? But there's a twist to this illustration, and we'll talk about it in this episode!

You WILL be changed by what you learn.

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the summer reading plan. We’re finishing up chapter 6 today, and if you remember yesterday, I said there were two questions Paul was going to answer in this chapter. He’s answering the second question in this section, and it’s really similar to the first. Verse 15 basically says, “Since we are no longer under the law, we can do whatever we want, right?”

The way Paul responds to this question reminds me of a teacher who has explained something more than once, but has now been asked a different question about the same thing. He’s going to explain this to us, again, in a different way so that maybe someone who hasn’t gotten it yet will get it this time.

Paul isn’t done talking about the law, he’s going to talk about it some more in chapter seven, but he’s really trying to convince us to make the choice to serve God rather than sin here at the end of chapter six.

Hi! Welcome to the summer reading plan, today we are talking about Romans 6:1-14. In the past few days we’ve discovered a couple of things about Paul’s writing in this book. We’ve talked about how Paul is good at anticipating the questions his readers might have, and how he is writing with a lot of logic. He is really breaking everything down for us here. Chapter six is just more evidence for that. In this chapter he answers two questions, and we’ll talk about the first one today.

There is a word he mentions three times in the next ten verses, and that word is “KNOW” not, N-O, but K-N-O-W. If we have died to sin, there are some things we must know.

Listen along to find out what those things are!

This weekend was all about community, and we're just getting started! On Saturday a family in our church hosted a family fish fry, and I was overwhelmed by all the families who came together and how they loved on each other throughout the day. Then, on Sunday Joseph preached on... community! It was so good!

Here's the thing about community though-- you can't force it, and sometimes it's difficult. How do we push through when things get messy? That's what I'm talking about in this episode!

We are finishing up chapter five today. I told you yesterday that chapter five is broken into two parts: the blessing of justification, and an explanation of how it all works. Today we’re talking about how it works. Paul has spent most of the first five chapters telling us how ALL OF MANKIND sins. We are born into sin! You’ve probably heard that phrase before “born into sin.” What does that even mean? Verse 15 says that many died through one man’s trespass (death being the result of sin). Who was that one man? It was Adam.

Here’s the good news. Verse 14 says that Adam was a “type” of the one who was to come. Another person came, who is the “head” of the church. Chapter five says he brought a free gift, which was justification for everyone. Do you know who that man is? It’s Jesus Christ!

When Jesus came, he made a way for us all to be reconciled with him!

Hi everyone! Welcome to the summer reading plan! We are jumping in to Romans 5 today, and we are talking about verses 1-11. So far, the book of Romans has taken it’s readers on a journey from the time in which it was written, back to when the law was given, back to when God made his covenant with Abraham, and today, it’s taking us all the way back to when sin entered the world with Adam. Paul knows what he is doing though, because he’s covering all the bases, and each time he goes back, he shows us how it’s relevant to us. There are a few things in this chapter that will be addressed again later in this book, so hang in there and don’t quit now!

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.

It’s okay to break down your reading into smaller sections! That is exactly what we’re doing in this Bible study. The book of Romans is a LOT to swallow. So just study ten verses at a time, or five, or one– but be sure to read all the surrounding verses. So we just talked about 4:1-12 yesterday, but I read them again before I jumped into studying this section. It helped me to get focused on what I would be reading today.

So let’s jump right in at verse 13! Paul restates his purpose clearly and concisely again right in the middle of chapter four. He has been answering the question, “What about our history?” and in verse 13 he says it loud and clear– our God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We are saved by our faith in God, and so was Abraham.

In this section he tells us about a specific example of a time Abraham demonstrated his faith in God, and it ties right into how we finished up yesterday talking about that resurrection power.

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.

Welcome to day seven of the summer reading plan! Today we are talking about the first part of Romans 4, verses one through twelve. Before we get into it, let’s talk about one of the “P’s of Bible Study” that I don’t mention as often: process.

"Just because you question something doesn’t mean you oppose it. God is not scared of your questions."Speaking of questions…. I mentioned earlier in our study of Romans that one reason this letter from Paul is unique is that he has never met the people to whom he is writing. Unlike 1 and 2 Corinthians, this letter is not a response. However, in Chapter 4, Paul shows that he already knows the questions his recipients might ask. Paul spent chapter three addressing issues of ethnicity between the Jews and the Gentiles. He talked a lot about the law, and how the law was not meant to save anyone, but to reveal sin. That’s great news, but here’s the thing: the law was given to Moses, and there was a whole lot of Jewish history that came before Moses. It’s like Paul knows the Jews would say, “Alright Paul, this is all great, but how does it fit in with the rest of our history?”

Let's see how Paul answered that question in this episode!

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.

We know you can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk? This is the question that Paul was asking the Romans in the second part of Romans Chapter 2. If there hasn't been a passage to practice using perspective on yet... there is now! Today's passage is all about the Jews and how circumcision bound them to the law. It would be easy to skip over this part.... except that it is still super applicable to us today!

"Righteousness has never been about what we can see on the outside. It has always been about what happens in the heart."

What a weekend we had with the Hope Kids! We are praising God for FOUR kids who were filled with the Holy Ghost, and two kids who were baptized in Jesus' name! I'm breaking down everything Kids' Revival by talking about what happened BEFORE, DURING, and my reflections AFTER. Why did we decide to do a revival instead of VBS? How do we prepare for something like this? How can we be more intentional when we pray for kids? What is church even supposed to look like? How do we get our kids more involved in services?

Where do we go from here? Listen to the episode to find out!

Remember how exciting yesterday was? Yeah... hold on to that feeling. The message of the gospel means nothing to the person who doesn't recognize their own sin. Today's passage of scripture is going to help us recognize our need!

I'm using notes from one of my favorite commentators, Warren Wiersbe, in today's episode. He calls this section of scripture "The Devolution of Man." It's broken down as follows:

1: 18-20 Intelligence
1:21-23 Ignorance
1:24-27 Indulgence
1:28-32 Impenitence

"Anything that takes what God has made and uses it for a purpose other than what God has made it for-- that's idolatry."

Welcome to DAY ONE of our Summer Reading Plan! Today, we're reading Romans 1:1-17.

Did you know the apostle Paul had a letter form? He was a great writer, and all of his letters follow the same template:

  1. Opening
    1. Addresser
    2. Adressee
    3. Benediction
  2. Thanksgiving
  3. Body
  4. Paranaesis (Practical Application)
  5. Closing

Today, we're talking about the opening, and it is LOADED. Paul doesn't play around! Everything he says is meaningful, from the first verse to the last.

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.

Tomorrow begins our "Summer Reading Plan" or "SRP" on the book of Romans, but you definitely want to START HERE FIRST! In this episode, I'm explaining how the plan will work, and I'm giving some background information on the book of Romans.

I believe in using Jen Wilkin's "Five Ps" of Bible study: prayer, process, perspective, purpose, and patience. This episode will take care of some of the perspective. I will be answering the who, what, when, where, and why of the book of Romans. On July 1st, we will start with the first part of Romans 1.

It's going to be so much fun, so go ahead and make plans to follow along!

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.

I'm recapping Sunday morning, the "Times of Refreshing" Minister's Conference, and y'all know I'm STILL talking about Camp. I'm covering everything in this episode, starting with how we need to align our expectations of what God can and will do with His word. Do you know what a stronghold is? Probably not, because it's a word we use in church, but not in regular conversation... so I'm talking about that too.

Scripture references:
The story of John the Baptist in prison- Matthew 11
What else we know about JtB- John 1:19-34
How to break down strongholds- 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NLT)

I'm baaaaaack! From San Diego to Hot Springs, and on the way to Illinois, I'm doing my best to share some of the highlights of the past few weeks with you all in today's episode. I am truly encouraged by the determination and authenticity I saw from the teens at Camp Mulberry this past week, and I'm alarmed by what I've seen elsewhere. This episode isn't a recap of every message I've heard over the past few weeks, but I am sharing some observations I made while in California, a recap of a message Joseph preached at Hope, and some of what we discussed at Camp-- including how I was called "elderly" by one of the young people slaps palm to forehead.

"Passion is great, but it's time for us to move forward with purpose. Lets do something for the Lord this summer!"

What is Pentecost Sunday? Why are we celebrating? Why do we need the Holy Ghost? Who can get the Holy Ghost? All great questions-- and they're all answered on this episode. We had a great day celebrating the work God is doing in our local congregation and around the world. We heard from a visiting missionary who encouraged us to share the gospel with urgency.

Matthew 11:28 says, "Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest."

In this Sunday recap, I'm talking about the sermon from this morning, "I will give you rest." It's three simple points: Come to me, take my yoke, and learn of me. I'll share part of my grandmama's testimony about how this verse led her to Jesus, and how what I've been studying in Galatians connected to the sermon!

I'm also sharing a little about our new class at church, "Christian Living."

I'm back with more Bible study tips and tools, and today we're talking about memorizing scripture! But first, today is a very special day. You will have to listen to the podcast to find out why. In this episode I'm sharing a story about something that happened in my third grade classroom, and I'll discuss why it's so important to hide the word of God in your heart, and give some very practical tips on how to memorize scripture.

Scriptures Referenced in this episode:

In this episode, I start by telling everyone what happens BEFORE Sunday service ever starts, and I'm hoping there are some listeners out there who can relate. I'll talk about the effort that goes into selecting songs for the worship service, and why it's important, and finally I'll recap Sunday's message. I'm back with more Bible study tips, and today I'm talking about one that is the hardest for me (and I imagine I'm not alone): PATIENCE. When we read our Bibles, we are in communion with Jesus-- and just like any other relationship, you can't know everything about Him overnight. In this episode I'm discussing (again) why Biblical literacy is so important, something disturbing I saw on Instagram, and I'm even making my way into the Old Testament to talk about Pharaoh's magicians Jannes and Jambres (did you know they had names?) Maybe you need inspired to pick up the Bible again... this is the episode for you!

I'm sharing some of my favorite verses about the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, starting with 2 Corinthians 1:20, "All God's promises find their yes in him." All of scripture points to Jesus. The Old Testament points forward to Him, and the New Testament points back to Him and what He did at Calvary. As the world grows darker and darker, we have a living hope that is shining bright. Listen along with me in this episode about how Jesus came for me and you.

I'll be honest, I was more long-winded than the preacher today! I'm recapping every part of our service from the mission report from South Africa, to the praise and worship set, to the importance of children participating in church. Then, I'm recapping the sermon, and let's just say... I REALLY enjoyed it. I've got a lot to say about today's message about the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus. So much to say that I'm going to finish it in Thursday's episode!

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.

It's the episode that I have been SO EXCITED to get out to you all, because I'm unloading all the basics on The Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. I'm putting my New Testament Tutor hat back on for this one! In this episode I'm talking about when the books were written, who wrote them, who they wrote them for, where they got their information from, and why the wrote them. Like I said, all the basics! Have you ever heard of the synoptic gospels? How about the synoptic problem? I will be talking about why three of The Gospels are so similar, and why they have historians stumped.

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.

Probably my favorite Sunday Recap yet (am I going to start saying that every week, maybe). In this episode I'm talking about revival, and what that even means, the meaning behind some of the songs we sang today, and I'm recapping Pastor's message on the parable of the prodigal son.

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

In this episode I'm sharing my experience at a very interesting church service I attended while in college. I admit, I'm going to get on my soap box about the work of the gifts of the Spirit in the modern church (we're talking mostly prophecy and tongues here), and then I'm sharing several scriptures from the Old Testament that point to Jesus in the New Testament.

Scripture References from this episode:
1 Corinthians 14
Isaiah 53
Micah 5:2-5
Zechariah 12:10

I'll start this episode off by sharing with you all how I'm doing with my Bible reading plan. Then, I accidentally turn this episode into a little bit of a recap-- but you've got to hear about the lesson from a couple of Wednesday nights ago and how it applies to Bible reading. I'm sharing a parable from the book of Luke, which compares the Word of God to a seed, and I'm talking about how to get good soil so that your roots can grow deep. It's a fun episode, and I can't wait for you to hear it.

What's the most important part of the Bible? The Old Testament? The New Testament? What is a testament, anyways? In this episode, we're digging into how the Bible is organized, the likelihood of Jesus being able to fulfill more than 324 prophecies made about his birth, life, death, and resurrection in the Old Testament, and we're talking about three specific prophecies from the book of Genesis.

"All scripture points to Jesus."

Scripture References from this episode:

YAY! For the 10th episode of the Heaven and Hale Podcast! In this episode I'm digging into WHY it is so important for us to know how the Bible is translated, starting with a little current news. We are living in a confusing time, one in which the enemy of our souls would love to plant seeds of doubt and confusion. However, Proverbs 20:5 says "Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him."

I will wrap this episode up discussing SEVERAL versions including the ESV, NIV, NLT, MSG, and CSB. We'll compare verses from each translation and discuss why some translations are more inclusive than others.

"If the enemy can plant seeds of doubt in your mind, then he's already done his job. He doesn't have to take your Bible, he just has to make you doubt that it's true."

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.

What a great Sunday! Have you ever been in one of those services where everything seems to be going...wrong? It's easy to say that it's the enemy at work, but what if it's God trying to get our attention, trying to get us to slow down and listen to what He has to say. That's what happened to us on Sunday, and the Lord really spoke to my heart!

Pastor Joseph's message came from Acts 10, the story of Peter visiting Cornelius, and Cornelius and the people at his house being filled with the spirit. He posed the question: Are you a Peter, or are you a Cornelius? If you are a Peter, it's time to take the message to the world, and if your a Cornelius, you need to know that God has more for you!

"God has never told me to rise and eat that I didn't do it."

You ARE a Bible reader.
You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.

I've done my research, and I'm ready to talk about Bible translations! In this episode, I'm sharing details on four ways that the Bible is translated: word-for-word, thought-for-thought, balanced, and paraphrased. I only had time to talk about the history of the King James Version (KJV) and the NKJV in this episode, but I'm looking forward to sharing about other translations with you in the future.

"I'm not going to give you a recommendation... I'm going to give you the information you need to make a decision for yourself."

I reference two books where I got my information in this episode. They are "The Bible in Translation," by Bruce M. Metzger, and "Rose Book of Bible Charts, Volume 2." Check them out if you want more information!

What an exciting day for my first Sunday recap! In this episode, I'm talking about what songs we sang during worship, the main points from Sunday's sermons, and my big take-away for the day.

I love it when the messages I hear at church and my personal Bible study all come together, and that is exactly what happened yesterday.

"God is calling the church to new levels, but it comes with a price."

"You can't choose culture over the kingdom."

Here's a playlist of the songs we sang yesterday, in case you need some good praise and worship jams anytime this week: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiY5d-CkhvgrN6SGEgheMr3B6ZyUrnwL2

I'm revisiting my number one tip for getting started with Bible reading in this episode: Pair your Bible reading with prayer. The disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, and they certainly weren't the last ones to ask that question. Listen along as I share a sweet story about teaching my nephew about prayer, and as I read and discuss the verses in Matthew and Luke about the Lord's prayer.

"One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“‘Father,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation.’”
-Luke 11:1-4, NLT

"If you don't have time to read the Bible and pray, read the Bible first. It will make you pray." -Sis. Angie Burkes

"Every time I learn something about God, it changes me too."

In this episode, Anna discusses four reasons why you should read the Bible, and takes her list from 2 Timothy.

"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15

"Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." 2 Timothy 3:12-17

One of my favorite things to talk about when teaching on how to study the Bible is perspective. In this episode we talk about what a road trip through the Bible looks like vs. a bird's eye view. We take a quick trip to Leviticus and drop in on the "Hall of Faith" in Hebrews chapter 11. We're covering all our bases, but we're learning a lot!

"Faith is the link between the rest we receive when we stop striving... and the rest that we're going to receive when we get to Heaven!"

Today is a great day to read the Bible.... but maybe you've never read it for yourself, or maybe you've been reading, but you just don't understand it. Whichever camp you find yourself in, I'm here to help you get started.

In this episode, I'm talking about how to dive right into reading the Bible, and I will give you my top four Bible study tips! I'm keeping it short and sweet, but I'll cover everything from prayer to Bible versions, to looking for Jesus in scripture.

You CAN understand God's Word.
You WILL be changed by what you learn.

And, in turn, the Word of God will change your family, your community, and your world.
