There are many things in life over which we have little or no control. Normally, these events have little long-term effect on our lives or finances. The biggest financial problems are self-inflicted. We are our biggest problem! After a lifetime of toiling and saving, don’t let a self-inflicted wound destroy your financial life.

Finding purpose in retirement is often less about discovering one perfect calling and more about intentionally building a meaningful life.

My initial vision was to quit practicing Dentistry one year after I transitioned my practice. I wanted to complete the CFP curriculum. I wanted to begin lecturing to the dental and medical community about financial literacy. I HAVE DONE NONE OF THESE THINGS!

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but writing checks is almost a thing of the past. Most people write very few, if any, checks anymore. The digital transfer of money has become quicker and easier with the advent of multiple options for cash transfers, such as ACH, debit cards, Zelle, and Venmo. In a recent Podcast I discussed the relative merits of a Roth IRA. Many factors determine whether or not Roth IRA contributions make sense. The account holder’s age, tax bracket, net worth, risk tolerance, and available cash are important in establishing a Roth IRA.

One of the most important factors to consider is age. As someone ages, it becomes less advantageous to contribute to a Roth IRA. There is a crossover point where the disadvantage of initially paying taxes outweighs the advantage of tax-free growth.

The conventional approach to withdrawing retirement funds generally involves withdrawing from taxable accounts first, followed by tax-deferred accounts, and finally tax-free accounts. This strategy can minimize taxes and maximize the growth of tax-advantaged investments.

On the income side, I did not initially realize the importance of those extra dollars generated through part-time work. The basic concept is that each dollar earned equals $25 less needed in savings. This formula is derived using the 4% rule in reverse.

Troughs are utilized to feed pigs. The problem with a trough is that only so many pigs can eat at any given time. The pigs push and force each other away from the trough to gain access to food. In this manner, new and dominant pigs will force their way to the trough and replace the pigs currently eating.

Over the last few years Annuity ownership within retirement plans has become more commonplace. But, annuities can be very confusing and misunderstood. The main benefits of annuities appear to be secure and guaranteed income that can occur over a fixed period, or for the remainder of a person’s life. However, it should also be noted that these benefits come with a higher cost in terms of fees, lack of liquidity, lack of flexibility, and loss of principal in most cases at the contract’s end.

Each person’s "Life Clock” is wound only once and no one knows exactly when that clock will wind down and stop. Different people in different cultures and different localities place different values on time. But in its final essence, we are all given the same amount of time each day, and each person has a choice in how they will spend the time given them.
