Uncover the intricacies of family estate planning with the expertise of the Honorable Judge Glen Reiser, who joins us to navigate the complex waters of trusts, probate estates, and guardianships. Judge Reiser, with his two decades of bench experience, dissects the role of successor trustees, the challenges they encounter, and the nuanced matters of mental capacity that are crucial in the drafting of sound estate plans. Our conversation takes a critical look at the common yet potentially problematic practice of appointing children as trustees and offers a cautionary tale through a riveting case from the San Domingo Valley.

Estate disputes can be as intricate as a fine tapestry, and sometimes they require a mediator's touch to unravel the knots. We explore how mediation has evolved within California's trust law, particularly after a landmark case that mandated court-ordered mediation in trust disputes. Judge Reiser provides a behind-the-scenes view of mediation's role in alleviating court dockets and the personal effects it has on family dynamics. We also delve into the balance lawyers must find between advocating for early dispute resolution and preparing for trial, bringing strategy, and emotion to legal proceedings.

In the realm of estates and trusts, professional fiduciaries stand as the unsung guardians, ensuring fairness and maintaining peace within families. Judge Reiser sheds light on the demanding work of these individuals, who navigate the treacherous waters of family dynamics, financial responsibilities, and the ever-looming threat of litigation. Through personal anecdotes, we underscore the importance of clear communication and equitable distribution in safeguarding family unity across generations. Judge Reiser's insights underscore why professional fiduciaries are pivotal in trust administration, especially in a landscape marked by legislative shifts and the complex intricacies of trust law.

Today’s podcast is a followup to our NOV. 15, 2022 episode 5…to check in and see what has happened in the intervening months to Angel, her Grandmother, Uncle and Father, and how a stroke, a brief stint in rehab and physical therapy have paved the way for Grandmother’s successful entrance into a home care community. And the best part? She’s now thriving. But, as often happens in life, the story doesn’t end there…

Caring for an elderly parent and navigating the tension that comes with it – hear from a family that has survived the blow ups to do what’s best for Grandma. A must-listen.

Tensions run high and family dynamics are hyper-sensitive when deciding what to do with an elderly parent’s living situation. Unfortunately, many families fracture and don’t properly reconcile, even after the dust settles.

In this insightful and heartfelt interview, Ron and his guest take us through the myriad of real and often explosive emotions that occur when immediate family lives with - and takes care of - an elderly parent, and decisions that need to be made for the parent’s welfare and future that affect them all.

In the end, a healthy dose of humility and honesty go a long way towards keeping the family intact through the transition…and keeping them together for the holidays, birthdays and other special family occasions.

A journey through the history & evolution of wine, from ancient civilizations to modern times…sommelier John Penate returns for another delicious episode.

Take a trip back in time to the beginning of wine, as John Penate makes a return trip to the podcast.

In America, we know Georgia as the “Peach State” but for the rest of the world, Georgia is an ancient country found at the intersection of Europe and Asia. And for sommeliers, it’s known as the birthplace of wine, with evidence of winemaking dating back to 6000 B.C. You’ll learn all about the unique winemaking methods used there, such as fermenting grapes in large clay vessels called qvevri, and the unique grape varietals used in their wine that are found nowhere else.

John also provides listeners with an historical context for the development of Georgian wine, including the role of religion and centuries-old cultural traditions in their winemaking, as wine is used for both religious and secular purposes.

And then, if we hadn’t already been desperate to get our hands on some Georgian wine, John and Ron taste a Georgian red wine called Saperavi, which John describes as “having a fruity nose with hints of spice and leather, and a tannic, acidic taste with a long finish”. He suggests pairing it with roasted chicken or vegetables, as the acidity and tannins can cut through a variety of flavors. Sublime.

All this and more awaits in this delicious episode. Your taste buds - and your ears - will thank you.

Italy means history, culture…and wine. Join expert sommelier John Penate for an audio tour of what Italian wine has to offer by region, type and taste.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Their history informs their culture, which informs their wine. And it does so deliciously.

In this episode, Master Taster Sommelier John Penate takes us on an audio wine tour of Italy as he chronicles his adventures there, and his love for all things Italian. He gives us the inside story of the Italian Association of Sommeliers, the world’s first and oldest sommelier school. And he answers many of our burning wine-related questions: how far back do Italian winemaking traditions go? In some cases, 800 or 1,000 years. Can you have wine at a business lunch? Yes, in Italy, it's expected. Should you choose your dinner wine based on its drinking taste or its acidy? Acidy - acidic wine is good for pairing with food…very good. You’ll learn all of this and more, as John’s passion and enthusiasm are contagious. A delicious episode. Cheers!

If you’re selling a luxury property, the World Bid Auction Platform creates urgency and market value by connecting you with buyers from around the world.

People often ask, why would someone auction a property? Isn’t that only related to foreclosures Turns out, no. Not even close.

Braun International and Premiere Estates focus on luxury residential property and commercial real estate, and together, they have something very special to offer their clients: the World Bid Auction Platform.

It offers sellers many benefits. It finds hungry buyers in a very concentrated period of time and creates urgency and market value through a very transparent and competitive process. MIMX stands for Minority Interest Market Exchange and brings commercial real estate buyers and sellers together from around the world…seamlessly.

Braun’s Minority Interest Market Exchange (MIMX) is a one-stop marketplace for those wishing to invest in partnership & minority interests in commercial real estate.

Prior to the creation of MIMX, minority partners had virtually zero options when they wished to exit a partnership. But now, with Braun’s MIMX platform, partners can find a new pool of potential investors, maximize their sales price, and exit a partnership on a timeframe of their choosing. And the best part is, that pool of potential investors can now come from anywhere in the world.

Todd Wohl explains it all in layman’s terms and for those considering liquidating their interest in a commercial space, or for those concerned about market value (and whether they are getting the best and highest price), this episode is a masterclass in income-producing investments.

Suzanne Forman bravely shares her family’s story in detail and covers many of the subjects we most often don’t want to discuss. It’s a heartfelt must-listen.

Every member of the family is affected when faced with what to do with aging parents. For Suzanne, as her mother’s memory loss accelerated, so did the urgency to step in and try to help. In doing so, she became her parent’s full-time caretaker, and instead of it making things better, things only got worse. It was hard to go back and live with them. Old father-daughter issues came up, as did problems with her siblings, the family’s overall finances and so much more.

In this far-reaching and intimate interview, Suzanne graciously lays out all the ups and downs her family went through at home, then in a senior community, and then at home again. If you ever had questions about the feasibility of becoming your parent’s caretaker, this interview covers it all, from hurt feelings and butting heads, to checkbooks, big life choices and who drives the family car. It’s a candid and relatable interview you’ll be sure to want to share with those you love.

Many families are touched by Alzheimer’s, but most don’t know there’s a free resource available to help them navigate their way - Alzheimer’s San Diego.

It’s hard to believe, but one hundred thousand people in San Diego are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. While many more may exhibit symptoms, there are no official diagnoses on file, and families need a resource to ask questions to get a better understanding of what they’re seeing and experiencing. Alzheimer’s San Diego is that needed resource and so much more.

Eugenia Welsh, Executive Director of Alzheimer’s San Diego takes listeners on a deep dive into the myriad of issues surrounding the disease, its warning signs, and its good days and bad days. But more than anything else, she and her team offer hope. You’ll hear about the classes they offer, the support groups, the telephone, zoom and in-person support, free memory screenings and so much more.

One can live well with the disease - and find joy in the moment - it doesn’t all have to be dark, and Alzheimer’s San Diego is that third-party support families need. Once you hear this heartfelt and compassionate interview, you’ll no longer be afraid to call.

Self-evaluation is hard and being realistic about health and finances can be harder. Making proactive decisions about both are the key to good senior living.

Sonny and Robert Googins were comfortably retired in Georgia, but storms, snow and proximity to family prompted a move not only closer to family, but a move across the country to a senior community in California. In this inspired interview, you’ll hear the details of their journey together and the proactive steps they took to no longer live in isolation and to thrive instead.

In their community, Sonny is on the Rotary Club and Planning Board, while Robert started The High Adventure Club – and yes, it’s exactly how it sounds. They jump out of airplanes, go parasailing, jet skiing, ride hot air balloons and conquer many other “bucket list” wishes.

It’s a story many seniors need to hear, because there is a good and exciting life waiting for you on the other side of an honest self-evaluation and assessment of where you currently are and where you could be with the courage to change.
