Maddie Wingerin and Téah Slabbert
Maddie and Téah are 2 speech- language pathology students who attend the university of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg South Africa. This dynamic duo enjoy sharing what they have learnt, helping others to communicate and sharing the reality of studying and pursuing an allied medical profession accompanied by a good cup of coffee and many eye-watering moments.
In this concluding MSD series episode, Maddie and Téah discuss the treatment for apraxia of speech and dysarthria. Téah looks at the evidence based practice and the different articulatory-kinematic therapy and rate/rhythm control treatment approaches. Maddie explores dysarthria treatment approaches involving articulatory approaches, non-speech oral motor exercises, intelligibility, reading and phonation. Emphasis is also given to AAC for both MSDs mentioned as well as the importance of including family and/or caregivers in the treatment process.

Within this episode, Maddie and Téah will discuss how and why we assess individuals who have a possible motor speech disorder. The 'classic' test battery for all speech language services will be mentioned and then specifics for MSDs. Formal tests will be named, checklists will be discussed and important cultural and linguistic considerations will be highlighted. Please leave any questions, suggestions or comments!
