When dementia enters a family, it can change far more than memory—it can affect personality, judgment, independence, relationships, finances, and the lives of everyone providing care.
In this episode, Sandy talks with licensed clinical social worker and Compassion Works founder Kay Adams, who brings more than 30 years of experience in geriatrics, hospice, palliative care, dementia, and caregiver support.
Kay explains some of the early changes families should watch for, why getting an evaluation and diagnosis can be so important, and why planning ahead with advanced directives, education, and support can help families navigate what comes next.
Kay also shares an important message for caregivers: you cannot—and should not—try to do this alone. From building a “care community” and asking for help early to preparing for changes before a crisis occurs.
Kay offers practical guidance for families facing one of life’s most challenging journeys. She also discusses her work through CompassionWorks and her book Bedside Witness, which uses real-life caregiving stories to educate, encourage, and validate the often-unsung heroes caring for people living with dementia and other serious illnesses.

Navigating healthcare can feel overwhelming—not only for ourselves, but also for the pets we consider family.
In this episode, Sandy talks with Dr. Kevin Toman, a veterinarian with nearly 40 years of experience and a special interest in orthopedic care, cancer care, chronic pain, and pet longevity.
Dr. Kevin shares his candid perspective on what is changing within traditional veterinary medicine, why many pet parents are questioning rising costs and recommended services, and how the loss of the veterinarian–pet parent relationship may be affecting trust and care.
Dr. Kevin also explains the four pillars of his pet-longevity framework: diet and lifestyle, a trusted local veterinarian, scientifically supported supplements, and prescription longevity medications.
He challenges common assumptions about popular joint supplements, discusses evidence-based alternatives for inflammation and orthopedic discomfort, and offers practical steps pet parents can take at home to support healthier aging.
This informative conversation will help you ask better questions, separate marketing claims from science, and make more confident decisions that may give your pet more healthy years—and more tail wags.

A cancer diagnosis can instantly create fear, confusion and an overwhelming list of questions. In this episode, Sandy Kibling speaks with Dr. Camille Williams—also affectionately known as “Queen”—a board-certified radiation oncologist, retired Army lieutenant colonel and founder of Questions for Cancer Doctor.
Dr. Williams explains the roles of surgery, systemic therapies and radiation in clear, relatable language while helping patients understand how to become active participants in their care.
Dr. Williams shares the first steps every newly diagnosed patient should take, beginning with one critical recommendation: never attend an important cancer consultation alone. She discusses how to ask doctors to slow down, explain unfamiliar terminology, show where the cancer is located and clearly outline whether it has spread and how it will be treated. She also encourages patients to ask the difficult questions on their minds, including what their diagnosis means for their future.
The conversation also explores the unique challenges veterans may face when cancer or toxic exposure could be connected to military service. Dr. Williams explains the importance of maintaining medical and deployment records, working with credentialed veterans’ representatives and creating a clear follow-up plan throughout treatment and survivorship. This compassionate and empowering episode reminds patients and caregivers that they have a voice, they deserve understandable answers and they do not have to navigate cancer alone.

What happens when your doctor knows the treatment you need—but your insurance company refuses to pay for it?
In this revealing conversation, Sandy Kibling speaks with orthopedic surgeon, author and healthcare advocate Dr. Erica Rowe Urquhart about the growing influence insurance companies and corporate interests have over patient care.
Drawing from more than a decade in private practice, Dr. Urquhart explains how prior authorizations, changing coverage requirements and narrow provider networks can delay treatment, disrupt trusted doctor-patient relationships and leave patients living with unnecessary pain.
Dr. Urquhart also takes listeners behind the scenes of an independent medical practice, where doctors must navigate complex and constantly changing insurance rules while trying to advocate for their patients. She explains the critical distinction between the clinician making the medical decision and the insurance company making the financial decision—and why those two priorities do not always align.
Listeners will also learn practical ways to become stronger healthcare consumers, including requesting the complete Summary of Plan Benefits, understanding the information on their insurance cards and comparing coverage before a planned procedure.
Dr. Urquhart also discusses her bestselling book, The Invisible Hand, Wielding the Scalpel, and offers a message of hope: trust your healthcare provider, understand your coverage and hold your insurer accountable for the benefits you are paying to receive.

Is the U.S. healthcare system designed to help patients—or profit from them? In this episode, Sandy Kibling speaks with Adam Cunningham, founder of Sylk Health, about the soaring cost of medical care in America and why many people delay treatment, live with chronic pain, or face overwhelming medical debt.
Adam shares the personal experiences that inspired him to create Sylk Health, a platform that allows patients to compare surgery prices at internationally accredited hospitals in China with prices in the United States. They discuss how procedures costing tens of thousands of dollars in the U.S. may be available for significantly less abroad, while still being performed by experienced physicians at highly accredited hospitals.
The conversation also explores the realities of medical travel, including consultations, travel expenses, follow-up care, physical therapy, insurance considerations, and what happens when complications occur.
Most importantly, Adam encourages listeners to explore every available option—including patient advocates and lower-cost providers in the U.S.—so they can make informed decisions and access the healthcare they need without sacrificing their financial future.

What does health equity actually look like for someone living with a disability—and what happens when the healthcare system makes assumptions instead of listening?
In this episode, Sandy speaks with Daniel Hodges, attorney, healthcare administrator, disability advocate, and president and co-founder of Peaces of Me Foundation. Daniel shares his deeply personal journey of living with multiple disabilities, navigating complex medical conditions, and confronting discrimination within healthcare and other systems.
Daniel recounts the painful experience of having his ability to parenting questioned while his infant daughter was receiving cancer treatment, simply because both parents were blind. He explains how bias, inaccessible facilities, inadequate training, and a lack of representation continue to create poorer healthcare experiences for people with disabilities.
Sandy and Daniel also discuss why communication, trust, and rapport with a provider can be just as important as credentials—and why patients must feel empowered to understand their conditions, ask questions, and seek care that respects their lived experience.
The conversation also highlights the mission of Peaces of Me Foundation, which connects individuals, families, providers, and organizations with education, professional training, peer support, and accessibility resources.
Daniel offers a powerful message of hope: authentic inclusion is possible when we stop treating equity as a box to check and begin creating solutions alongside the people most affected.
This episode is an important reminder that accessibility is a human right, every patient deserves to be heard, and meaningful change begins by meeting people where they are.

In this episode, Sandy speaks with Ashok Gupta, physical therapist and founder of TheraNow, about how virtual physical therapy is making rehabilitation more accessible, convenient, and effective.
Ashok explains how live, one-on-one care, personalized home exercise programs, and computer vision AI can help therapists measure movement, track progress, and guide patients from virtually anywhere.
They also discuss how virtual PT can benefit people recovering from surgery, living in rural communities, facing transportation challenges, or simply wanting more flexibility in their care.
Listeners will learn how telehealth physical therapy works, how it may fit with insurance and hospital systems, and what patients should ask their healthcare providers when exploring virtual rehabilitation options.
Key Takeaways:
Virtual physical therapy can deliver strong results. With the right platform, trained clinicians, and structured care, virtual PT can be comparable to in-clinic treatment.
Convenience can improve access and consistency. Patients can receive care from home, avoiding transportation challenges, long travel distances, bad weather, and mobility concerns.
AI helps therapists measure progress remotely. Computer vision technology can track range of motion, movement quality, and improvement over time.
Virtual PT is more than a video call. Effective care combines live one-on-one sessions, personalized exercise plans, patient education, progress tracking, and ongoing support.
Patients should ask their providers about virtual options. Hospital systems and physical therapy clinics may offer fully virtual or hybrid programs that combine in-person and at-home care.

This conversation is an honest and motivating look at what it really takes to lose weight, reclaim your health, and stop waiting for the “perfect” day to begin.

We started taking care of my father in law Ron and while trying to find the best care for him, we were struggling with him taking his medications in the independent living home he was in. We hired a company to assist, but sadly they proved unreliable. Ron was constantly pressing his alert button, due to dizziness or falling. We were frustrated for how to care for Ron but mostly not knowing if there were any options out there. After numerous ER visits we knew we had to find a different solution.
We know we are not alone in our struggles as many people care for senior loved ones today. Thankfully with new technology and the power of AI or Artificial Intelligence more options are becoming available. But how do you know what these options are?

Okay let’s talk about our not so favorite topic…what you eat and how you eat. The truth is I dislike this topic as much as anyone else but, what I can’t deny are the statistics that obesity contributes to heart disease, diabetes, and cholesterol to name a few.
It also impacts your quality of life. I recently had some friends come back from a vacation that that they had waited years to take. They enjoyed their trip but were so frustrated that they were limited to the things they could do. Ziplining not an option due to weight limits. Hikes they could only do the easy ones due to knee and backpain and frankly just too out of shape to do anything more than 1.5 mile flat course. This limited the time they could spend exploring an area of the world they had waited years to see.
You are not alone. We all struggle, but another fad diet is not necessarily the ticket to success. If we could better understand this, and have better health, feel good about how we look and along the way perhaps reduce medications and doctor visits in an expensive and complicated healthcare system. Willing to give it a try?

The providers that care for you are working to do their best but an office visit or hospital stay may make you think otherwise.
The office visit is short, questions unanswered or there is lack of follow up on a medication refill. Or You may be frustrated with a hospital stay where you experienced hours of delays and multiple requests for care, medication or even an update from a provider.
This would leave anyone feeling frustrated and wanting to say some choice words to the staff, but the truth is we have good providers working in a broken healthcare system.
This is why knowledge navigating the healthcare system is so important and being an advocate to speak up for what may be going wrong and making sure you and your loved ones are getting the care needed.
Knowledge is your superpower but even more you need to be an advocate and fight for the rights and best care for your loved one. How do you do this?

You slipped on a slick floor and it hurts but you’re not sure if you tore something or just have a really bad case of tendonitis. You go to your local urgent care clinic, or doctor's office, and you’re seen by a physician assistant (PA), who examines you, says everything is structurally intact, and you should use ice, elevate your arm and take some ibuprofen for the pain.
What the PA said makes sense, but shouldn’t you see -- you know -- the doctor?
Healthcare has changed especially post COVID and there is a shortage of providers… and practices are becoming more dependent on mid-level providers like Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Physician Assistants (PA). In fact, you may find that you rarely see the physician that you have been under the care of for many months or years. Is this, okay? Are mid-level providers qualified to provide the care you need? If your concerned, should you say something or go with the flow?

How is it that we live in the U.S. where we have freedoms and opportunities, yet our healthcare spend is outrageous, the system is fragmented resulting in delays in care, rushed visits and lack of quality of care that we all want.
If we look at the business side of healthcare, what the issues are and where the trends are going, we can make needed changes to the system, lower costs and get better healthcare.
We can also leverage new trends that we can use to be empowered by using technology to track blood pressure or glucose and have this data to provide at our doctor’s visit and work with our providers for our health goals.
How do you get this information, and stay informed, we all have busy lives, but the truth is knowledge is our superpower when it comes to navigating the healthcare system and getting the care we deserve.

I do this so you are empowered to be your own advocate and navigate the system versus being a victim to 1-800 number with your health insurance company or unanswered calls. What is also important is awareness of the system and options that are being shared with you…are they really the only options?
Do we live in a society that requires another pill or a surgery? The solutions often offered by our current medical model are typically focused on symptoms and mostly result in surgeries, medications, or some type of never-ending therapy.
What if you could avoid those unnecessary orthopedic surgeries, break the dependency on pain killers and other medications and align your mindset for a better and healthier you.
It’s never too late to change the trajectory of your life.
Matt LaBosco has been deeply entrenched in the health and wellness fields for over 20 years. His father was a medical doctor and mother a nurse practitioner. Matt experienced the benefits of having immediate access to medical professionals and learned about its limitations. Matt himself has navigated five orthopedic surgeries before the age of 23, periods of depression, and various systemic inflammatory ailments.
He realized at an early age that the solutions provided by the medical model never addressed the cause, but just bought some time until the next treatment. Through his personal experience and supporting thousands of individuals over the years in his private practice, online courses, and weekend workshops, he developed an entirely new paradigm that gave himself and his clients access to sustainable Vitality physically, systemically, and mentally.
Matt sincerely believes that everyone deserves and has the capacity to live their best life and has dedicated his life to giving the public the tools to make that possible.
Today we will discuss:
1) Parents medical professions - Your perspective of the current system
2) 5 surgeries and journey through the healthcare system
3) Coming out on the other side - outside the traditional paradigm

I often hear the stories and sometimes complaints from my sweet Mom and her friends about getting old, another doctor’s appointment, cataract surgery…another expense, or I’m losing my teeth, my back hurts and all the handicap spots are taken.
It really is hard to hear these stories but my Mom is right, living on a limited Medicare budget every expense adds up and watching the body she once knew that now limits her to what she can do or social interaction she can have or her independence can be challenging
As Mom says…Getting Old Sucks…but are there things we can do to perhaps minimize those expensive doctor visits and remain vibrant and live our best lives?

People are going without needed care, living in pain with chronic illnesses because they cannot afford medications, and many are going without health insurance overall with the ER as their only option.
I recently had a conversation with someone at a gathering who shared how she needs a monthly inhaler that costs $350 a month. In order to provide for her kids as a single Mom, she uses that inhaler 2-3 times a week to make it last longer. It is prescribed daily to be effective. She claims she wheezes but not as much and when air quality is bad it is a struggle to breathe. She could put things on a credit card but doesn’t want to deal with the looming fear of debt or worse bankruptcy.
How is it that we live in a thriving country in the USA where people have to choose between caring for their kids, putting food on the table or purchasing the medication needed or just trying to breath?
I am excited to have Bob Hertz on the show. Bob is a retired health insurance agent, and full-time advocate for health reform. He provides key information so consumers can deal with and prevent medical debt. He also proposes serious legal reforms that will reduce the scandalous medical debt that surrounds us today.
Bob brings clarity and real solutions - both for the individual patient, and for society as a whole.
What we will discuss:
1) What can the individual patient do if they are faced with debt?
2) Are there new laws that could alleviate medical debt?
3) What can be done to protect patient's rights?

Inflation, supply chain issues, the price of gas and groceries have all had impacts on families, just another aftermath of COVID and now that the Public Health Emergency (PHE) has ended as of May 11, 2023, we continue to get back to a life of normalcy, but here is what I know is true, that normalcy will never be the same.
While we will likely continue to experience the ever rising costs some good has come from it too with people rethinking their career and opting to pursue things they never have before or working that 4 day work week, perspectives have definitely changed. That said the isolation and lack of social activity has impacted our mental health like never before. We hear the stories on the news and see the impacts on our communities.
It’s important to understand the impact and even more important to understand the options and resources available for you!

Physician burnout is an epidemic in the U.S. health care system, with nearly 63% of physicians reporting signs of burnout such as emotional exhaustion and depersonalization at least once per week.
As a patient you may experience:
· Cynical or negative attitudes or lack of personalization
· Noticeable emotional exhaustion.
· Rushed visit or short answers to questions that don’t really address a concern
· Lack of empathy for patients.
The burnout epidemic is often associated with system inefficiencies, administrative burdens and increased regulation and technology requirements. An example of this is every payer or health insurance company has different requirements say for a prior authorization request that may require a peer to peer interview or additional documentation or reports pulled from a electronic health record system. There are more telehealth and follow up emails now required in a post COVID world allowing for 12 hour days.
And the bottom line is this, sadly providers are paid for quantity of services and not quality. While we are seeing some changes in this evolving to value based care…quality care for you, sadly this is still years out.
I am delighted to have Joe Sherman MD on the show today.
Dr. Sherman. is a pediatrician, coach and consultant to physicians and healthcare organizations in the areas of provider well-being, leadership, and career discernment.
His services include individual coaching, medical team support, physician retreats and workshops. He is a trained facilitator with the Center for Courage & Renewal and a Master Certified Physician Development Coach with the Physician Coaching Institute.
I wanted to bring Dr. Sherman on the show to share from the perspective of the physician. If you are frustrated imagine how physicians are feeling. Studies show that during the pandemic burnout rate was as high as 63% more recently it is at 53% still a high rate.
Top 3 specialties are:
1) Emergency medicine — 65 percent of physicians reported burnout
Internal medicine — 60 percent
Pediatrics — 59 percent
With our healthcare in the current state with no hope on the horizon for healthcare reform, what do we need to know to understand what the physician is going through and how can we work in partnership to support one another for better health.
Welcome to the show Dr. Sherman!
Today we will discuss:
1) How has the culture of medicine contributed to so much disillusionment among doctors?
2) What is the impact of physician burnout and disillusionment on patient care?
3) How has your own life experience led you to your work with physicians and healthcare organizations?

Most American consumers are unhappy with their healthcare experiences, with most wishing for more personalized interactions versus no response or being routed to an offshore team who doesn’t understand our healthcare system and likely reads from a script.
Also, many are frustrated through their experiences with healthcare providers, from difficulties scheduling appointments to impersonal visits. Many say if providers catered more to their individuality and installed more accessible systems, they would visit their providers more often the personalization is missing.
Here is a thought...what if we could be more in touch with our own health, both mentally and physical changing our lives and potentially minimizing our dependency on those doctor’s visits we would rather avoid?
Hello everyone and welcome to Episode 27 staying healthy and out of the healthcare system. In many episodes I talk about when something has happened and what are your options when you find yourself looking for a specialist or fighting with the billing department over an exorbitant hospital bill after an unexpected hospital stay, but what if we focus on key things we can do to stay healthy and out of the healthcare system.
I am delighted to have Brad Carlson on the show today.

What are the basic human rights of healthcare? Health Equity is defined as reaching “the highest level of health for all people.” It means giving everyone the support they need to access the same level of medical care and education regardless of status.
This could mean:
Yet people either go without care and in some cases find themselves choosing to seek care in other places outside of the US to get care affordably and efficiently…what does this say about our US healthcare system?
I am delighted to have Myles Wakeham on the show today. Myles is an Australian who migrated to the USA in 1989 and has since become a multi-millionaire, lives a 100% free and unconstrained life, no job, etc. yet never graduated high school, let alone went to college. He is a self-made business focused technologist, and has made fortune on Bitcoin since 2011, and owns a portfolio of rental properties. Now you may be asking what does this have to do with healthcare?
Myles was one of a few survivors of a massive auto accident in the outback of Australia in the 1990s, which forced him to question life, purpose, and direction. Since rebuilding himself from that, he knows how to handle and mitigate adversity (including taking advantage of medical tourism all over the world for major surgeries), he has honed those skills to live a life unconstrained.
He spends 50% of his time in Arizona, and 50% of his time roaming the world, seeking out new opportunities. He also hosts "The Unconstrained Podcast" in which he teaches the art of Financial Sustainability to his audience. He has a book coming out on the subject as well as audio courseware on Success in Rental Real Estate.
I wanted to bring Myles on because of his unique perspective in navigating the healthcare system as an immigrant. Did you know that 46% of immigrants are uninsured and working to navigate the healthcare system. The goal of this podcast is to meet people where they are at and provide information that empowers them to make smart healthcare choices.
Today we will discuss:
1) Journey as an immigrant through the US healthcare system.
2) 3 issues you see with the healthcare system.
3) How do we make change happen - heroes among us.

Having a mental health issue can be scary leaving you filled with anxiety or just finding the courage to reach out especially if you are in a dark place can be difficult as well.
Also trying to figure out where you start to get the help you need and can you afford it?
There are many people who are struggling with mental health…you are not alone, there are resources…YOU matter!
We hear the stories every day of the need for more mental health services especially in light of recent headline news of shootings in our schools, churches and other public venues. I also hear from mental health providers of how they are trying to provide mental health services up against a healthcare system that doesn’t always provide the support that is needed. For consumers it can be a depressing and a dark place. How do you find the care and strength you need?
I am delighted to have Matthew Dickson on the show today. Matthew helps people with mental illness in developing countries so they can get access to basic mental health care at MindAid.ca. Mind Aid is the world's first website with all the organizations working on mental health in developing countries on one site (they are otherwise scattered across the web).
These organizations use models of basic mental health care that are low-cost, proven effective, and scalable. Some of these organizations have been endorsed by Bill Clinton, Forest Whitaker, Arcade Fire, Ashley Judd, as well as Zak Williams (son of Robin Williams) and Tim Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics.

They are recommended for all women age 65 and older, and for younger women at higher-than-normal risk for a fracture. Men may want to discuss osteoporosis screening with their doctor if they're over age 70 or at high risk for thinning bones.
People tend to think that bones are static and unchanging, but the truth is that bones are in constant flux. Unfortunately, as people age, they often lose bone more quickly than they can replace it, so their bones can become porous and brittle
If left unchecked, this bone loss can lead to osteoporosis, defined as reduced bone mass and poor bone quality. People who have osteoporosis have bones that can break with even the mildest impact. So it is a good idea to make sure your building up that bone density but how do you do this?
Or maybe you’re in a situation where you are already diagnosed with osteoporosis…what are your options?
I am delighted to have Jayne Wesler on the show today. Jayne M. Wesler is an author, psychotherapist, and attorney. She is the author of eight books, including three books on increasing bone density and bone health without medication. After publishing her first bones book, Jayne started a Facebook group dedicated to helping people with osteopenia and osteoporosis to learn how to strengthen their bones and prevent fracture. I will make sure and add a link in the show notes for this group and other amazing resources Jayne has provided.

While family caregiving can be a genuinely rewarding experience, caregivers often face common challenges that leave them overwhelmed, anxious and/or intimidated by their duties. This could be:
It’s important to seek a balance between caregiving and your own life.
More than 65 million people, 29% of the U.S. population, provide care for a chronically ill, disabled, or aged family member or friend during any given year and spend an average of 20 hours per week providing care for their loved one and this number will only increase.

In the last decade, the U.S. has taken measures to improve healthcare and the consumer experience. However, studies show that only seven percent of Americans are satisfied with the current healthcare system. The desire for change even crosses political lines and from multiple political affiliations…all agree the healthcare system needs changes or a complete overhaul.
The public perception of U.S. healthcare also hasn’t changed much since 1994. That’s 29 years that options have not changed about our healthcare system. According to a Gallup poll, seven in 10 think the current healthcare system is “in a state of crisis”
And isn’t it telling that 47M people are predicted to be uninsured or underinsured in 2023…the confidence in our system is at an all-time low…and people are struggling going without care, not managing chronic illnesses and ending up in the ER or worse…

I was tired of being rushed through a doctor’s visit and having to repeat myself or gather additional paperwork when my specialist wasn’t communicating with my primary care doctor. Healthcare is expensive enough without having to manage this too and even more concerning, what if something gets missed?
Trying the Direct Primary Care Model (DPC) was a win for me…I was impressed with my experience. I admire that physicians are changing the trajectory of healthcare going without contracts with healthcare insurance companies and putting their livelihoods on the line. Why? because they want to care for patients…really care for patients. They understand the frustrations of their patients and are concerned that the current model with gaps and miscommunication could result in a negative outcome and we deserve better.

Joe sees his Primary Care Physician complaining of shortness of breath and chest pain.
Because of his family history, and because Joe is overweight and smokes, his primary care physician is concerned that he may be at risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Joe’s primary care physician coordinates care with a lab facility who runs his blood work, and a cardiologist screens Jason for cardiovascular disease.
After getting his labs back, Joe’s care team of providers diagnose him with heart disease.
The advantage for Joe is his care team works in a value-based care model. Their goal is to coordinate care and communicate amongst the care team to provide Joe with the best care.
Joe’s nurse care manager helps educate him about cardiovascular disease and lifestyle changes that he can implement to improve his health. Joe’s physician has prescribed him a lipid lowering medication to help lower his high LDL.
Joe regularly meets with a dietitian who helps him start a heart-healthy diet and encourages him to become more active. Joe’s nurse care manager helps him find a smoking cessation program that works for him.
The bottom line is Joe’s care team is working hard to treat him efficiently, without driving up unnecessary costs, all the while focusing on improving and maintaining his health. This is the kind of care Joe deserves and so do you…but is this the type of care you are receiving?

Matthew’s friend, who is a nurse, used to bug him to use his doctor’s portal app instead of calling to make an appointment every time he had a question about his diabetes. When COVID hit, he had to stop ignoring her suggestion.
Now, the retired technology guru can’t imagine not being able to contact his primary care physician online.
Matthew also uses an app to track his A1C, the standard diabetes test that measures blood sugar levels over time: “He says…Yes, I get to see my labs. 10 years ago … I never knew what my labs were … until the following month when I would go see a provider. Now, I know instantly.”

I remember when so many practices were against telehealth vowing that in-person visits were still the best option. There were many medical organizations that also shared this perspective…and then…COVID hit…there was no choice but to embrace telehealth.
Consumers were also skeptical trusting they would have better outcomes if they were in the office talking directly to the provider…this has changed too.
Telehealth options have changed how we access care...resulting in better health outcomes, convenience and affordability and the bottom line these options should not go away…but will they?

In 2021 my husband and I had gained the responsibility for caring for our Dad. He had many health issues, bad habits and was adapting to a new life and new location.
My husband works in finance, and I work in healthcare so I thought I could take the lead to navigate the system. We navigated the Veteran’s Administration, commercial insurance, Medicare and Medicaid federal programs and, researched independent living and assisted living, home care, and medication management programs. You name it we researched it, and it was mind boggling and exhausting.
At one point we were at our wits end and so frustrated that it had be that complicated. Thankfully the light for us was the patient navigators that helped us along the way. We didn’t even know they existed.

There is no doubt that receiving a medical bill can bring on anxiety, especially since it can be hard to predict what you’ll be charged for a doctor’s visit, a procedure or any other medical service.
If you get an alarmingly high bill, you might feel too overwhelmed to deal with it. If it’s a small bill, you might be tempted to pay it without giving it a once-over, just to make it go away. But it’s worth scrutinizing every bill you receive, given that error rates can be as high as 80%.

Want to get a fair price on a medical procedure? Where do you begin and how can you make sure it is accurate? We all know that people are being forced to bear the cost of healthcare on their own, either because they have high deductibles or are choosing to self-pay because they can’t afford the high premium.
Sadly, while there have been some attempts at making pricing more transparent, we have a ways to go and this leaves many in the dark about the price of a medical procedure until you get the bill.
Why is it so hard to find out how much a medical procedure will cost?
The reality is that there’s not a straightforward way to understand medical procedures and the costs associated with them. Sure, you can look up “knee replacement surgery” and get a good overview of what the procedure itself entails. It’s challenging to find a clear fair cost estimate, although with more legislation around price transparency I believe we are seeing improvements.
In the meantime, there are tools and ways to get close to that price ways to reduce medical costs that allows you to manage your budget and get the healthcare services you need.

I was evaluating our insurance premiums for 2023 and they are going up by 7%. This seems to be a constant trend with healthcare insurance and hits especially hard with the price of most everything on the rise.
One of the 2023 trends or should be trends I believe patient engagement and self-advocacy. Not always is the information you get from your health insurance company reliable or maybe you are not sure about the recommendation of care you have been provided.
To be that advocate, knowing your options to make health care more affordable and efficient is key whether it is through healthcare disruptors or basic knowledge AND taking advantage of current trends to support your healthcare needs is essential especially as we move into the new year…We’ve got this!

For more than 150 years, advocates have been waging campaigns for health equity in the U.S. Relying primarily on moral arguments, these campaigns have tackled inequities in racial and ethnic minority health, women’s health, mental health, children’s health, veterans’ health, rural health, and most recently LGBTQ health. While these various campaigns have faded in and out the health equity movement as a whole has become increasingly mainstream in recent years and is finally a national priority.
The reason for this is simple: Equity has become more than just a moral issue. Today, it is a legal and an economic issue that needs to be supported by both Republicans and Democrats at federal and state levels….but will it be a priority?
What we will discuss:
1) What is Patient Health Equity?
2) Social Determinants of Health
3) Patient Stories – hearing how patient inequity exists
4) Healthcare organizations and priorities for change with Patient Equity in mind

A survey of 600 doctors found that 89% said they no longer have adequate influence in the healthcare decisions for their patients. 87% reported that health insurers interfere with their ability to prescribe individualized treatments.
The survey also found that because of their frustration, many doctors said they are thinking of leaving the profession and would not recommend a career in medicine to others.
And the bottom line is this…some medical professionals feel angry and frustrated knowing that unqualified insurance company personnel have the power to override their professional judgment and that the long-term health of their patients is being compromised so health plans can achieve short-term cost savings.
Who is in charge of your care? Now the obvious answer is your provider. In most cases this is true, but what is also true is there are sometimes restrictions with the prior authorization process that your provider is required to follow per health insurance companies’ guidelines. Health Insurance companies may put into place a rigid prior authorization process that requires limits to the procedure or medications that may be used for your condition.

Mike C. thought he was dying. A heart attack had pinned him to the floor of his bedroom. His neighbor took him to St. David’s Medical Center where he was successfully treated. Weeks later, he received a bill from the hospital for the total amount due $108,951 and this was the amount after his insurance covered their part. St. David’s was out of network with his insurance, and the health insurance company had only paid $55,840 of that bill leaving him owing the remaining amount.
Should he pay this full amount or does David have rights?

With Open Enrollment for coverage in 2023 upon us, consumers are concerned about the high costs impacting their access to healthcare, increasing medical debt and the lack of mental health coverage, according to results from a new nationwide survey.
The survey, conducted in August of this year 2022, polled 1,000 consumers across the United States on their outlook of the current state of health benefits. The data reveals that a staggering 86% of consumers are concerned that their health benefits will not cover a portion or all of their exams, treatments, or procedures for this year.
Additionally, 71% of consumers stated that their health plan does not cover mental health, and two-thirds of consumers are concerned that their current mental health coverage does not address the needs of themselves and their families.
Payment for services was another concern, with 91% of consumers stating they have experienced an obstacle related to payment for healthcare services. These challenges impact the ability to access care in a timely manner, and 42% of consumers have faced increased stress or said they were unable to enjoy life due to delayed medical treatments.

People may find the process of Open Enrollment challenging. According to a survey I recently reviewed, health benefits choices can be difficult to understand. More than half of survey participants say reading Shakespeare is easier than reading their health insurance policy. I agree!
When it comes to health care, 40 percent of survey respondents admit that they don't know what they should be looking for or the other 60 percent don't know what questions to ask.
Given a desire for better health and the cost of monthly premiums we must make this process better.

I am blessed to live in a neighborhood where we all look out for each other. One of my neighbors has lived in the neighborhood for over 35 years. Larry has served our country in the armed forces and his wife Lucy is a sweet soul. They love their grand kids, backyard barbeques, and serving their church community, but aging impacts us all. When Lucy needed help, rather than calling an ambulance and heading to the ER and incurring exorbitant hospital bills, she called Dispatch Health, a mobile urgent care company. They sent a team of providers to care for Lucy in the comfort of her home, providing her the care she needed…on her terms.
I get asked all the time what are healthcare disruptors? I am here to break it down and provide some easy to understand examples to better understand how they may benefit you

Meet Jaqueline G. Austin Texas:
“My name is Jacqueline and I’m a 19-year-old college student from Austin, Texas. Last year, I was diagnosed with Ankylosing (Ankielosing) Spondylitis, an autoimmune disorder that primarily affects my spine and has spread to most of my major joints. Without expensive biologic medications, my spine could fuse and leave me unable to walk by the time I’m out of school. I’ve tried three different biologics and have had to pay incredibly high prices for all of them, even when they haven’t helped my condition. I live in constant worry about how I will be able to afford my expensive medications, my tuition, my rent, and my groceries at the same time.”
In this episode, we are going to discuss briefly what are a few of the issues resulting in the outrageous pricing for prescription medications, and then we are going to talk about a solution with Cost Plus Drugs.
Prescription drug prices are out of control. Drug corporations have the monopoly on pricing power…spending billions to get the laws and regulating that benefit them and not you.

Health insurance companies every year create new products to appeal to their current subscribers or appeal to new subscribers. Now when I talk about products, I am referring to the different names you may see on your insurance card. Like Pathways Gold or Silver or Select One or Blue Prime. These products vary in cost and have different service offerings and, in some cases, limit your access to provider groups and or facilities.
We see these new products at open enrollment is always an interesting time with so many options for insurance it can be confusing. One of those options that is offered is what is referred to in healthcare lingo as a narrow network.
So what is a Narrow Network anyway?
