What are the different types of consultations offered?
There are two different types of service: Informational Consultations (by telephone or email) and Diagnostic Consultations (only by telephone).
•Informational Consultations: Convenient, 24/7 telephone or email access to physicians for general advice and recommendations regarding routine medical conditions.
•Diagnostic Consultations: Comprehensive telephone medical consultation, often resulting in diagnosis and specific treatment recommendations. A complete medical assessment is required prior to consult. Medication may be prescribed as appropriate. These consults occur within 3 hours of the patient’s requested consultation time.

Roland Thomas began his career with a national wholesale drug company. He became the youngest Pharmacy Design Consultant in the company’s history. He left the company in 1970 to begin his own company. He sold his interest in Display Options, Inc. in 2001 and at the writing of this book is a pharmacy planning specialist with their Rx Planning Solutions division. He served as president of both the North Carolina and South Carolina Traveling Members Auxiliary that were created to support each state’s Annual Pharmacy Conventions. Roland served on the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy in 1987 1988 as an ex-officio member. He has written several articles for The Southern Pharmacy Journal and The Palmetto Pharmacist. Many of his projects were featured in the SPJ with cover stories, one of which was shown on the front cover. Roland searched far and wide, without success, to find a handbook covering many of the topics covered in his book. Poison Prevention Week (March 17 - 22)
Pittsburgh, PA - More than 2 million poisonings are reported each year to more than 57 poison control centers in the US. Over 90% of these poisonings happen in the home. National Poison Prevention Week, which was established in 1961, is March 16-22, 2014. It is important to raise awareness of preventing poisoning not only from medications but also from many other common household products and invisible gases like carbon monoxide.
There are many ways to prevent poisoning from medications: Proper medication use can reduce the amount of old medications remaining around the house. Taking the medications as they are prescribed, and not forgetting to take them can help.Knowing the signs and symptoms of side effects from medication overdose. Ask your pharmacist or doctor about the information.Proper medication storage can prevent medications from going bad. Most of the medications can be stored at room temperature. Do not store your medications in moist areas, including bathroom cabinets.Proper medication disposal can reduce potential poisoning in children and pets. Medications can be ground down and mixed with either kitty litter or coffee grounds. You can put the mixture into a container or an envelope and throw away in the trash.National Drug Take-Back Day is April 26, 2014. Locations will be announced on April 1st and you can take any of your old medications, even if you do not know what it is.When you suspect poisoning from anything, call the poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.

The Pharmacy technician, also sometimes known as a pharmaceutical technician, is a health care worker who performs pharmacy related functions, generally working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist or other health professional.

About Mike Koelzer & Kay Pharmacy:
In 1940 Frank Koelzer, a drug salesman from Detroit, moved to Grand Rapids along with his wife Katherine. In 1945 they bought Treat's Pharmacy and changed the name to Kay Pharmacy.
Mike Koelzer (Frank's grandson) began at Kay Pharmacy in 1980 as an eighth grader. Like his father Jim, Mike attended Purdue where he graduated from Pharmacy school in 1991. Mike took over as President in 1997.

The term social media can refer to an Internet-based platform or application where users can create and share content interactively with other users. It provides an open forum in which individuals can express themselves and interact with others in the cyber world. Some examples of popular social media websites include Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. These forms of social media can be accessed through computers, mobile phones, PDAs, and tablets, and are capable of being utilized quickly and easily. While the use of social media is still relatively new in health care, there is no question that it will continue to be utilized and expanded as time goes on.
International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP)
The International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP) is an association representing more than 2,700 pharmacists, technicians, students, and members of the compounding community who focus upon the specialty practice of pharmacy compounding. Compounding pharmacists work directly with prescribers including physicians, nurse practitioners and veterinarians to create customized medication solutions for patients and animals whose healthcare needs cannot be met by manufactured medications. The REACH Initiative™ was started by Tim Sandlund, a marketing professional who wanted to do to good with the gifts that God gave him. Tim spent four weeks in Kenya his freshman year of high school during a family medical missions trip. The family returned again two years later for six weeks. Both trips were life-changing experiences. The culture and people are beautiful. Massachusetts Governor Patrick convened the Special Commission to Make an Investigation into and Study of the Oversight of Compounding Pharmacies (the “Commission”) in the Commonwealth in response to the tragic events of the multi-state meningitis outbreak that has been attributed to products from Massachusetts-based New England Compounding Center.
The Commission undertook an intensive and focused study of compounding practices in Massachusetts, relying on perspectives from pharmacists, regulators, physicians, epidemiologists, health law practitioners and legislators to protect the public and to minimize the risk of drug shortages. The findings and recommendations put forward by the Commission offer a framework within which policy changes should be contemplated and further studied.
The Commission was chaired by Christian A. Hartman, an expert in pharmacy practice and patient safety.

I have a dream. It’s not quite as powerful as Mr King’s but it’s important to me. I want to write a book about life in pharmacy. There is too much doom and gloom surrounding pharmacy and I want it to make people laugh.
A similar book was published recently. I have not read it but I believe with the help of social media, we could create something special. I need your help.
I want people to send in anecdotes and jokes about pharmacy. I would love to hear from community pharmacists, pre-regs, technicians, dispensers and counter staff. Also hospital, primary care, prison, academics, pharmacy journalists, students, GPs and even GP receptionists. I will add in some of my blogs too. I have no idea how I will publish it but that will be part of the adventure.

ACPCN helps independent pharmacists arrange meetings with members of Congress and shape critical legislation. It is organized around Pharmacy Committees that help ACPCN organize hometown data about pharmacy operations, and committee members often contact their elected officials to provide timely information.
ACPCN maintains a database of members in the Congressional Network. The information is used by the ACPCN team in Washington to ensure members of Congress focus health care initiatives on patients and taxpayer savings rather than special-PBM interests.

PCPAN is a project of the Pharmacy Choice and Access Now (PCAN) coalition, which fights on behalf of patients to preserve access to quality and affordable health care and pharmacy services.
PCPAN exists because patient well-being and access to pharmacy services are being immediately threatened by the planned merger between two of the largest pharmacy benefit management (PBM) companies, a merger which could go into effect as soon as the first part of 2012, providing the combined mega-PBM excessive dominance and control over the health care of tens of millions of Americans.
PBMs, which serve as middlemen between corporations or insurance companies and patients already wield a one-sided advantage in setting prescription medicine contract and reimbursement terms for community-based pharmacies. The 5% Pharmacy Exemption Rule has been widely advertised as a relief for independent pharmacies. However, it is not as simple as the press releases have made it sound.
