Dealing with the change of life for women can be tough. Perimenopause can make you feel anxious, depressed, confused, in pain and everything in between. So how do you tell these symptoms apart and manage them? What can you do to make this journey less stressful and make sure you're taking care of yourself?

This week’s Empower Your Pelvis Podcast, Dr. Amanda Fisher and Marin Cole will interview our guest, Dr. Lauren Streicher. Dr. Lauren is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Her clinical interests include all aspects of women’s health but Dr. Streicher has a particular interest and expertise in menopause and sexual health. In addition to her interest in consumer outreach and education, Dr. Streicher is considered an expert in the academic world. She does research, publishes in the scientific literature, lectures at medical conferences, and devotes significant time to teaching residents and medical students.

In this episode, they will talk about breaking the common myths, misconceptions and misnomers of menopause, sexual health, and postpartum so you can have a better understanding of them, and feel more confident in knowing that your body is doing what it needs to do!

They will touch on such topics as:

  • Menopause is a time when a woman's reproductive system is changing. It doesn't cause symptoms for everyone, but some women do have menopausal symptoms. It can be a difficult time for women, but it's not something that most of us are prepared for.
  • It's important to talk to your doctor about what's going on with your body so they can help monitor your progress through perimenopause.
  • One of the big myths we're always talking about is that people think perimenopause and menopause are the same thing.
  • Perimenopause is not just the end of your menstruation cycle—it's an extremely important time when your body changes significantly. This can lead to symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, mood swings and more.
  • Hormone levels are fluctuating, and it's important to know what you're going through and how it will affect your body so you can take any necessary steps to keep yourself healthy.
  • Gynecologists, for the most part, are not experts when it comes to menopause. It's not something that it's taught, certainly not in medical school. This is why you'll need a specialist if you want a truly holistic approach to your menopausal health care.
  • Sexual medicine has its own set of challenges. It's not just about being able to get an erection, or being able to have an orgasm. A lot of women in their twenties and thirties are having problems with libido and intercourse that's painful or difficult.
  • This is something that women are not being told about—even those who are aware that they might develop some vaginal dryness or maybe some pain with intercourse are not told about this other impact of menopause.
  • Dryness is not limited just to the vagina. It can also affect a woman's bladder and urethra, making it difficult for her to urinate and even causing incontinence.

Pelvic health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet it's often a topic that's shrouded in mystery and discomfort. How do you openly discuss this conversation with your child at a young age? How would you empower them to educate them about their pelvic health and develop a positive relationship with their bodies?

This week’s Empower Your Pelvis Podcast, our host, Dr. Amanda Fisher goes solo to talk about her mission in life — normalizing pelvic health, especially to our kids. She also discusses how educating our children about their bodies and normalizing conversations around pelvic health will help them develop a healthy relationship with their bodies and empower them to take charge of their health as they grow older.

She will touch on such topics as:

  • The importance of encouraging open communication with your children.
  • The emotional aspects of pelvic health.
  • Reminding your child or children that anatomical words for genitalia are nothing different than you saying “elbow for my elbow”, or “ankle for my ankle.”

This week we had a chance to sit down with a doula, Heidi Mills from Bloc Births, and chatted all the things prenatal and postpartum from prepping the tissue, stats on using a doula vs. not using a doula and why you should know all the things prior to childbirth.

Heidi's Bio: Heidi Mills is a certified birth doula and owner of Bloc Births. After a few years of experience working in newborn care and with women during pregnancy, she realized the gap of care in the American healthcare system that often does not fulfill the emotional and physical support families need during the childbirth experience. Her goal as a doula is to provide inclusive and evidence-based support amongst a variety of birth experiences that families can use to flourish during this big life event.

For every purchase, she gives a percentage towards her scholarship fund for women to receive doula services.

In this week's episode, I will be joined by Ryann Kipping RD. Ryann has helped hundreds of women escape confusing and outdated nutrition information to find a happy, feel-good pregnancy. Simply put, advice to “take a prenatal vitamin” is not enough information anymore. Eating for two people is different from eating for one. Appetite changes, intense cravings, morning sickness, and heartburn comes in winds and you’re forced to lean into your body's cues like never before. During pregnancy, you have to eat intentionally and she is here to make it easy for you. Having the “pregnancy glow” is great and all, but feeling that glow (confidence, nourishment, and energy) on the inside is what matters the most for her and her clients.

In this episode, we talked about how she found the world of prenatal nutrition? How did she research prenatal Nutrition? When and why did she open her business? We talked about her IOS App. What is the effect of caffeine during pregnancy? Nutritional tips for your pregnancy. Should you limit your sugar intake/ cravings during pregnancy?
