Bernardino of Siena was an Italian priest and Franciscan missionary. He was a systematizer of Scholastic economics. Another dynamic saint once said, “…I will not be a burden, for I want not what is yours, but you…. I will most gladly spend and be utterly spent for your sakes” (2 Corinthians 12:14). There is danger that we see only the whirlwind of activity in the Bernardines of faith—taking care of the sick, preaching, studying, administering, always driving—and forget the source of their energy. Polycarp was recognized as a Christian leader by all Asia Minor Christians—a strong fortress of faith and loyalty to Jesus Christ. His own strength emerged from his trust in God, even when events contradicted this trust. Living among pagans and under a government opposed to the new religion, he led and fed his flock. Like the Good Shepherd, he laid down his life for his sheep and kept them from more persecution in Smyrna.

Our newest addition to the Chuck, 90 Seconds with the Saints provides us with a weekly highlight of a saint on our Roman Liturgical Calendar each week. This first episode of '90 Seconds with the Saints' highlights the life of St. Gregory the Great, whose feast is on September 3rd. All Saints of God, pray for us.
While Paul's letters are written to specific communities, the Letter from Saint James is written to everyone! In other words, the message he is sending is a universal one that we all need to hear. Just like Jesus, James invites us to become perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect. How am I receiving God's Word this week? Am I letting it take root in my heart? Lord, help us to be doers of the word and not just hearers.
We hear a familiar scripture verse this week in our First Reading: 'As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.' In the Gospel, Peter tells Jesus: 'Who else do we go to? You have the words of everlasting life.' Is the Lord speaking to us through these words this weekend? Are we able to turn away from what the world offers us and turn our gaze toward Christ? HE alone is the Bread of Life.
This weekend we step aside from the sixth chapter of John and take a look at the role of our Blessed Mother in the life of every Christian. This week, take some time and focus on your relationship with our Blessed Mother and seek to imitate her 'yes'.
Where do we go when we are lost? When things are difficult? For the Prophet Elijah, it was a broom tree. Some places are good to go to and other places aren't. This weekend's readings help us to center ourselves on turning to Jesus, the Bread of Life, when we are lost, afraid or challenged. If we leave from Mass hungry, we may not have done it right. We come to mass and are fed so that we can go out and do what God has asked of us. And yet, at times, we groan like the Israelites who weren't satisfied with what God had done for them either. What do we need to fast from in order to become fed by Christ? Where do we need to turn away from in our spiritual life so as to be nourished by this Eucharist that was just celebrated? Christ doesn't want to just feed our stomach, Christ wants to feed our souls!
When we come to celebrate the Eucharist, we bring the little that we have. But through God's abundant generosity, he takes it and turns it into something new and multiplies it so that it can be shared. What will you bring to the celebration of the Eucharist this weekend as you come to mass?
Do we take enough time to rest? Do we take enough time to sit with Jesus and tell him about what is going on in our day? Take some time this week to spend with Jesus and let him know how things are going. Receive from Jesus whatever it is that he wants to tell you.
The Prophet Amos had no clue what he was doing. The Twelve Apostles had no clue what they were doing. At times, we have no clue what we are doing. But God's grace is sufficient for us and we are always walking forward in hope that God is using us as instruments of HIS grace! Take some time this week to thank God for that sweet gift of grace and for using you as an instrument of it.
Do you ever struggle to notice God within your own family or among those who know you most? That is the struggle Jesus is facing this weekend in the Gospel - sometimes the ones who are closest to us are the most challenging to talk about our faith with. Maybe this week can be a challenge for us to talk about our faith with those we live with, work with or come into contact with on a regular basis.
How often do we struggle with suffering? Can we make the act of faith that we hear about in the Gospels this weekend? As Christians we need to make that act of faith regularly so that we can stay rooted in our own need for healing.
This weekend's Gospel centers on the disciples being caught up in a storm. Like those disciples, the storm of this past year has challenged our faith and has caused us to have moments of uncertainty. But God stays close to us. God does not abandon us and God has invited us into a deeper need for his presence in the midst of our own storms. Take a moment this week to thank God for providing us with His presence in this past year. Invite God to help you to see him in a new way this week.
Like the crowds in this Sunday's Gospel, we might be unaware that Jesus is trying to show us what the Kingdom of Heaven looks like in our daily routines. Where would you like to begin to notice God in your life this week?
We tend to forget that God is with us - in the midst of the 'hustle and bustle' we lose sight of God's presence in our day. Recognizing God in the Body and Blood of Christ is essential for us as Catholics. Ask God to help you recognize His presence in your life today.
