Welcome to the Official Coastline Covenant Podcast! We'll post weekly conversations, devotions, and interviews that are all meant to grow and help shape you into a joyful, courageous follower of Jesus Christ
We decided to pause the Podcast for a bit to focus on other Coastline things, but fear not: we'll be back soon with some podcast-specific stuff we're really excited about!
Hunter and Family Theologian Andrew Faris close out the Story of God/From the Garden to Eternal City podcast series by talking about podcasts, the beauty of Scripture, the importance of church, and living like the resurrection of Christ actually happened and actually matters.
Garrick and Hunter discuss his sermon from this past Sunday, birthdays, the connection between our new creation and creation itself, friendship, and missional grants!
If you want to find out more about missional grants, you can click here!
Dr. Jeannine Hanger joins Hunter and Michael to talk about Jesus' role as high priest, what it means to work out our salvation, and the first movies we saw on dates with our spouses.
Hunter, Nikki, and Garrick talk about second chance stories, recap Garrick's sermon from this past weekend (which you can listen to here), and trace themes like priesthood and kingdom throughout the Story of the Bible. Stick around until the end for some great sharing and Garrick's attempt at a new catch phrase.
As we tell the Story of God in our next teaching series, we thought it'd be fun to spend time on the podcast diving into some of the recurring themes and tracing how they're mentioned throughout the Bible so that we can understand that God's story didn't just happen... it's still happening in our lives.
In this first week, Hunter and Garrick talk about John Grisham, Genesis 1:1-2:3, and how being creative is more than just a vocational call.
Hunter, Garrick, Nikki, and Richelle take some time to talk the highs and lows of Easter 2024: the pivoting, the amateur weather watching, the faithfulness of God, the passion of our Coastline Family... this Easter was unforgettable, so take some time to relive it with us.
We'll see you next year at SkyZone! (Hopefully)
Hunter sits down with Family Theologian Dr. Jeannine Hanger to discuss spoilers, her sermon about surrendering to God (you can listen to that right here), and her upcoming book which is available for preorder on Amazon!
Hunter sits down with returning guest (or champion!) Melinda Hurley to talk about the upcoming food fast here at Coastline. Not only do they discuss the purpose behind fasting, how fasting or giving up anything can lead to revival, but they also provide various pragmatic tips as you consider a one, two, or three day food fast with members of the Coastline Family!
For more information, check out our website. If you want to join the Zoom calls on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, click here!
Shawn and Hunter sit down with Lianne de la Peña, a Christian counselor here in the South Bay and discuss Shawn's sermon from Sunday, March 3rd. We not only really loved Shawn's message, but we talk about it for pretty much the entire episode, so if you want to listen to it before jumping into this episode, you can do so here.
Hunter sits down with Margaret Grieco, one of our prayer leads here at Coastline. They talk about honesty in prayer, how prayer becomes a place to hide or perform, and what they wish everyone knew about receiving prayer on a Sunday morning.
They also talk about the Layers Prayer, which is something that we're really excited about. You can find it here and begin implementing it into your own life.
We're SO excited to bring you this conversation with Susan Johnson, the founder of South Bay Soul Care. We talk about what spiritual direction is, who it's for, and what you can expect should you choose to sign up...
... and you SHOULD choose to sign up because Coastline believes in spiritual direction so much that we're offering to pick up the tab for your first session. Want to know more? Listen to the full episode and then head to our website.
Happy Lent! Happy Tuesday! Hunter and Garrick are kicking off the Lent season here at Coastline by giving you a primer on our Lent series: Layers. Garrick and Hunter get into all the different ways that Coastline is inviting you to step in to transformation. It starts with our Ash Wednesday service, which is on February 14th (aka Valentine's Day) at 7:30pm in the Sanctuary at St. Andrew's.
Also, Garrick mentions Dr. John Coe's Spiritual Formation lecture series. You can find those here.
In our final episode of our Surviving the South Bay podcast series, I sat down with the Lead Pastor of Calvary Chapel Palos Verdes, Daniel Hendrickson. In a familiar location Daniel and I discuss his story, his journey to the South Bay, some of the strongholds he and I both see, and of course... the local's only Lightning Round!
Thanks to everyone who has participated and engaged with this series. It was a true joy to be able to bring you these conversations!
Loved this conversation with Mike Dsane from King's Harbor. We talk about how he came to South Bay several years ago, what his journey has been like as a pastor in a church like King's Harbor, his hope for church planting and a lot more! We recorded this in King Harbor's new studio, so if you're hearing a bit of room noise, that's why! Either way: I can't recommend this episode more!
Absolutely loved talking to Jason Cusick from Journey of Faith! We discuss his story, his methodology behind some of the ministry that Journey of Faith does, and his views on ‘being a normal person.’ Come for the Star Wars talk, stay for the Locals Only Lightning Round!
In the next episode of our Surviving the South Bay Series, I sat down with Brittany Park from Remembrance Community Church in Lomita, CA. We talk about our history together, her call to ministry, and how Jesus offers us the good life despite our efforts to try and define that for ourselves.
In our first conversation with different pastors from different churches in the South Bay, Hunter sits down with Bill MacPhee from the River Church. They discuss Bill's journey to the South Bay, his views on the unique strongholds and sins of the area, and wrap everything up with a rousing entry into the Locals Only Lightning Round.
Happy 2024, Coastline! We're excited to kick off the new year with a brand new teaching series: Surviving the South Bay. Over the next several weeks, we're going to take a look at some of the unique sins and strongholds that exist in our community and look for ways that we can root ourselves in the kingdom instead in our dominant culture. This will be challenging and stretching, but we think that it'll ultimately be great.
On this episode of the podcast, Hunter and Shawn talk about doomsday prepping, the unique nature of the South Bay, the intricacies of this teaching series, and introduce a new segment called the Locals Only Lightning Round!
Join all 6 of the full-time Coastline Staff members as they discuss the year that was: the highs, the lows, and all the pickle ball you could possibly handle.
Merry Christmas! As a gift, we've decided to give you one last episode of our Christmas Hymn conversation... but instead of a deep, theological, timeless song, we discuss Mariah Carey's 1994 stone cold classic "All I Want for Christmas is You."
Thanks for listening, Merry Christmas, and we'll see you next week and every single week after that!
Michael and Hunter finish up (maybe?) this year's Christmas Hymn series by talking to our friend JP Donelan. JP plays guitar at Coastline most weekends, and we discuss how he found us, what his role is on a Sunday, and his connection to T-Pain. The three guys then listen to some songs that some consider Christmas-y while others do not.
Then, they listen to "What Child is This?", a straight forward song that invites us to ask some big questions about Christmas and its implications for us in 2023. Thanks for listening, and Merry Christmas!
The Christmas songs continue with special guest Kristina Zorn! Hunter, Michael, and Kristina talk about morning radio stations, cold Christmas climate, and The First Noel. This is a conversation that has EVERYTHING, and we hope you enjoy!
Michael, Hunter, and Richelle talk about their Spotify Wrapped, "Silent Night", and how much theology they think Christmas songs actually need. We hope you enjoy the TWO versions of "Silent Night" in this episode.
Our annual Christmas Hymn series is BACK! But, before the hymn talk, Michael and Hunter talk about the Eras Worship night. Who came up with the idea? How'd it go?
Then, Hunter and Michael discuss Away in a Manger, a hymn with mystery and heresy. And get this... it was made for kids! Sound interesting? We thought it was!
What do you get when you cross Bruce Springsteen with John 7:37-38? A Thanksgiving Devotional, brought to you by Coastline Covenant Podcast.
(Note: There's a lot of copyrighted music in this episode, so if you're affiliated with Bruce Springsteen, the Chromatics, or any other artists used... please don't be mad!)
In the final episode of our Christianese series, Hunter, Shawn, and family theologian Andrew Faris take a look at the word covenant and how it is a helpful way to understand the story of Scripture as well as God's love for us. Also discussed: Chipotle, identity theft, and how much Hunter and Andrew hangout without Shawn.
On this episode of our Christianese series, Hunter and Dr. Jeannine Hanger discuss the idea of "asking Jesus into your heart." Where did it come from? How'd it go so popular? And most importantly... is there more to being saved than praying a prayer? Listen to this episode to find out!
In the next installment of our Christianese podcast series, Hunter, Michael, and Nikki discuss the idea of "quiet times." You know it as a time where you are quiet with the Lord... but is that all that it is? Is value to opening up the term to different times? Is there a beauty in experiencing God beyond just reading your Bible? Listen to this episode to find out!
We're excited to bring you a brand new series here on the podcast called Christianese, where we're taking a look at some "church-y" words we say all the time and diving into their origin and how they made their way into the church.
On this first episode, Garrick and Hunter talk about fellowship. Where did it come from? Why is it so important? What does Red Dawn have to do with it? Find out the answers to these questions and more!
All 6 Coastline staff members gather to reflect on the past 100 episodes of the Coastline Covenant Podcast. We look back, look forward, and play some fun games.
In all sincerity, thank you to all who have listened, shared, or interacted with the podcast. When we started this thing 102 episodes ago, we had no idea it'd get to where it is today. We're excited for the next 100! With overwhelming gratitude, we say THANK YOU FOR LISTENING... and, of course we'll see you next week and every single week after that.
Our 100th Episode comes out next week! Until then, drop a question here (on Spotify) or email hbabcock@coastline.family. Thanks for listening, and we'll see you next week!
Hunter sits down with The Gals (Nikki Hernandez, Therese Manning, and Alicea Hernandez) to talk about all things Women's Ministry here at Coastline. The main idea: women, we see you! We want to create a space for you to be in friendship with other women. We want to see you at The Manning's House (20410 Reynolds Drive, Torrance CA 90503) for a night of fun and community.
ALSO, you're running out of time to send in questions for our 100th Episode! Send any and all questions to hbabcock@coastline.family by tomorrow to make sure they're read on the podcast!
Hunter sits down with Coastline's two newest hires, Michelle Stout and Kegan Mori to talk all things employment! Just kidding... kind of. Kegan and Michelle get grilled about what they love most about Coastline, how they got the jobs, and what they're looking forward to the most.
Remember! Our 100th Episode is coming soon. We're opening up the mailbag for any and all questions! Send them in to hbabcock@coastline.family!
Hunter, Shawn, and theo nerd Andrew Faris talk about BAPTISM! If you've had any questions or misconceptions about baptism, this episode is for you. The guys tackle immersion vs. sprinkling, infant baptism, water in the Bible, and tell stories about their own baptisms. This is such a great conversation: great depths and even greater laughter.
ALSO: our 100th episode is coming up! Send in questions for our Q+A Episode to hbabcock@coastline.family. Thanks!
Michael, Hunter, and Shawn talk all things Galatians! Beyond the theological themes and the hopes we have as we dive into this book, the three guys talk about what it means to be free, what worshiping freely looks like, and of course... Jimmy Buffett.
Hunter, Garrick, Nikki, and Shawn discuss church membership at Coastline! We're really excited for this season where we're asking you to officially join our family. Hear about why this is happening now, what this means for you, and how you can get involved!
This week we're wrapping up our quick series called "Covenant Connection" with a conversation with Adam Edgerly, who oversees Covenant World Relief and Development.
Hunter and Shawn talk with Adam about his role and his duties, his heart for missions work, the way that the social action goes hand-in-hand with the Gospel, and his hope for Covenant pastors around the world.
Welcome back! We're returning from hiatus with Tammy Swanson-Draheim, also known as the President of the Evangelical Covenant Denomination. Hunter and Garrick ask her about her pastoral heart, how she ended up as president, and one thing she wants to tell the local church!
... or for several weeks after that! With the crazy schedules in the Coastline offices, we're taking July and some of August off. We'll be back on August 17th with new episodes. See you then!
It's our last week in the Blueprints series, so Shawn and Hunter talk about how the entire series has led to this point: the church is a home. What does that mean? Is there hope for those who feel as if the church isn't their home? How can we make the church more "homey" to both those inside and out? The conversation ends with Shawn and Hunter evaluating the entire series, and how it's been unique from other vision series. #movethatbus!
Hunter and Garrick talk about Garrick's sermon from this past Sunday about persisting in doing good in relationship. It's a rich conversation, one you think you have heard about, but one that is framed in an incredibly practical way. We hope you enjoy it, and we hope you listen through the end as we've added the testimony shared by Drew and Kelcy Messick. It's worth listening to, even if you've heard it before!
Shawn, Hunter, and Garrick talk about the importance of unity at Coastline by unpacking Coastline's unique view on women in ministry. If you've had questions about the theological reasoning behind certain views as well as questions about Coastline's 'third way', then this is the podcast for you! We hope you enjoy it.
On this week's episode, Hunter, Garrick, and Nikki talk about Coastline's denomination: the Evangelical Covenant Church. We talk about our history with the covenant, what it means for each of us to be covenant, and little bit about what makes the ECC denomination unique. This is a really personal episode that helps to paint a picture of the history of Coastline, so if you've been with us for a while or wondered how we got to where we are, make sure you listen!
Hunter, Nikki, and Shawn talk about the most exciting thing possible: church polity! They discuss why the time was right for Coastline to draft some church structure, how the process went, and most importantly, why it matters to us. This is a great conversation that really helps show that the governance here at Coastline has been developed with love and family in mind. We hope you enjoy!
Hunter talks to Michael Barker and Tiffany Adams about prayer at Coastline. They discuss what a praying church looks like, discuss when prayer became real for them, and give helpful advice for some of our Coastline family who are apprehensive about going up and asking for prayer after a service. Big thanks to Tiffany for talking to us, and make sure you look for her trading cards!
We're excited to talk all things Blueprints, which is our new teaching series at Coastline where we're looking at the Bible's wisdom and guidance in building a church. Shawn, Garrick, and Hunter talk about why this matters now, what is to come in this series, and the hope that we all have for our Coastline family as we talk about things that we definitely need to hear as a congregation.
Buckle up! Hunter sits down with family theologian Andrew Faris to talk about Jesus forever. Like the conversations before, this one places Jesus in time and space, namely the eternal space. We ask and answer questions about the rapture, the book of Revelation, common terms you hear when talking about the end times, and of course... R.E.M and Wilco. This is a FEAST of a conversation and we really hope you enjoy it!
We're so excited to bring you the second conversation in our new series, Jesus: Yesterday, Today, and Forever. Hunter sits down with Dr. Jeannine Hanger to talk about some of the "I Am" statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John. These statements are Jesus talking to his followers in their today (when the Gospels were written) and our today (2023), so we not only talk historical context but also how these things matter to us now. There is so much good stuff in this episode, including the answer to the age old question: Who would in a fist fight between Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.
We hope you enjoy it!
Welcome to a brand new series here on the Coastline Covenant Podcast! We're mirroring our teaching series Jesus: Yesterday, Today, and Forever by taking a look each of the "times" (yesterday, today, and forever) and trying to see Jesus within them in ways we maybe hadn't been able to before. This first episode is incredibly special, as we have Dr. Charlie Trimm on the podcast talking about Jesus yesterday, or in the Old Testament. To try and summarize this conversation would be impossible, but just know we cover everything from Lord of the Rings to Moses to the end times. If that doesn't sound exciting, I don't know what does!
It's all over! Lent, Holy Week, and Easter have come and gone! To keep up the tradition, all six Coastline staff discuss the process of getting to Easter, the day itself, volunteer wins, and Sweet Caroline.
But seriously - thank you to EVERYONE for helping make Easter a success!
Garrick, Hunter, Shawn, and Michael reflect on Lent at Coastline, talk about Palm Sunday, and share their excitement for Holy Week and all that's to come. We'll see you THIS SUNDAY AT 10 AM FOR EASTER AT VETERAN'S PARK!
Hunter and Garrick talk about his sermon from this past week, ways in which we can implement the lessons we learned in Lent throughout the rest of our weeks, and the freedom we have in Christ.
If you missed Garrick's sermon, or any sermon from our Lent series, you can check them out right here.
I sat in the Fellowship Hall this past Sunday and asked people to share about their experience with their fast. Enjoy these conversations and be blessed knowing that God is on the move at Coastline!
Hunter, Shawn, and Michael talk about Shawn's sermon about Jonah, their prayer lives, and how prayer can be as easy and frequent as breathing!
To catch up on all our Lent sermons, click here.
Hunter, Garrick, Michael, and special guest Melinda Hurley talk about fasting! Throughout a lot of jokes and personal stories, they isolate some important spiritual truths that fasting helps to bring out in our lives. As a church, we want to encourage you to jump in this week and fast in a way that feels appropriate for you in your journey!

Shawn, Nikki, and Hunter talk about confessing, Psalm 51, the role of mourning in the Christian life, and Shawn's very unique Lent journey.
To catch up on all the sermons from the Lent series at Coastline, click here.
Garrick, Nikki, and Hunter talk about Garrick's sermon from this past Sunday and the devotional content for this week. They get into repentance, community, and the way that Lent is better together than it is alone.
Click here if you want to listen to Garrick's sermon from 2/26, and make sure to download the Coastline App to get a copy of our Lent Devotional!
Happy Lent, everyone! To prepare us for all that Coastline is doing during this season, Garrick, Michael, and Hunter sit down to discuss Lent and its origins, Ash Wednesday, and what we're all "giving up" for Lent. Join us tomorrow night at 6:30pm for our first ever Ash Wednesday service, and we hope that you dive deep into what God has for you over the next 40 days.
Here's the link to the 40 Day New Testament Challenge that the guys were talking about.
Shawn and Garrick join Hunter to talk about the things they've enjoyed about preaching the book of Esther, the lessons they've learned, and the significance of Purim for our Coastline Family. Thanks for joining us for the past several weeks as we've taken a deep dive into Esther, we have loved it! Stay tuned until the end of the episode for some exciting news about the Coastline Covenant Podcast during the Lent season!
Hunter and Richelle have watched the VeggieTales episode about the book of Esther so you don't have to! Join them as they discuss the merits of the episode, the drawbacks, and some of the things that just don't quite make sense (how do they hold things? what is Esther?). The conversation transitions from a review of VeggieTales to a discussion about the intentionality Richelle brings to Children's Ministry as she picks lessons and teaches our children about the Lord from Scripture. This is a fun, silly episode and we hope you enjoy!
We're SO lucky to be joined today by Suzie Lind. Suzie is the Executive Pastor at Journey in Franklin, Tennessee. Beyond that, Suzie uses her platform on social media to highlight the current political climate in Iran. We ask Suzie to walk us through what's happening there and how it connects to the book of Esther today. Suzie closes us in a time of prayer that we hope encourages you to seek ways to engage with Christians all around the world. Again, huge thanks to Suzie!
Hunter, Michael, and Garrick sit down and discuss the ways we can move Esther from our head to our hearts. As we've said, this is a complex historical book, so it stands to reason that some of us might not see the value of reading Esther "devotionally." This episode seeks to provide help in that area as well as answering questions such as, "What does it mean to pray through a passage?" and "What should Hunter's new catch phrase be?"
Join Hunter, Shawn, and theo nerd Andrew Faris as they discuss God's sovereignty. This is a big topic and the guys spend time asking questions and processing in real time what it means to live our lives as if God is real and active. We hope you enjoy it!
Also, if you're looking for Coastline Covenant sermons, they're now uploaded here each week (beginning with the Esther series).
Hunter and Shawn have an in-depth conversation with professor and author Dr. Charlie Trimm about the book of Esther. The three discuss the ways Esther is confusing and challenging, how it fits within our modern understanding, and how to ultimately find Christ within its pages. It was an honor to have Dr. Trimm join us and we hope that you not only enjoy this episode but check out his book The Destruction of the Canaanites: God, Genocide, and Biblical Interpretation.
Happy New Year! There's no better way to kick off 2023 than by discussing all things the book of Esther! Hunter, Shawn, and Nikki talk about the upcoming series at Coastline, the ways in which the church has avoided Esther historically, and how God moves in the big and the small of our lives. We can't wait to see you at church this Sunday and every Sunday after that!
For the last episode of the year, all 6 Coastline Staff sit at the table and reflect on all that God has done in 2022. We've been so thankful for the journey so far and are so eager to see what God has in store for Coastline in 2023. Thanks for listening and we'll see you next year!
Welcome to the final episode of the Advent Christmas series! Hunter and Michael go deep on Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee but only after they talk about one hit wonders and the song The Final Countdown. But seriously: this is a GREAT episode with so much wisdom and depth. We hope you enjoy it and have enjoyed our deep dives into your favorite Christmas songs!
Hunter and Michael sit down with Dr. Jeannine Hanger to talk about Christmas traditions, Christmas advice, and "Angels We Have Heard on High"! They talk about theological richness (or lack thereof!) in contemporary Christmas songs, and the ways in which the Gospel of Luke invites us to look at the juxtapositions all around us. Hope you enjoy it!
Hunter, Michael, and special guest Rachel Gonzales talk contemporary Christmas songs, a capella music, Christmas movies that Rachel may or may not have starred in, and the complicated Christmas classic, "O Holy Night."
Stream Rachel's album Lesson Learned right here on Spotify or wherever you listen to music!
We're back with not only our first episode in a while, but also the first episode of our annual Christmas series! Join us each week as we take an in-depth look at some of the most popular Christmas hymns. On this episode Hunter and Michael welcome special returning guest Andrew Faris to talk about Charles Wesley's hymn, "Come Thou Long Expected Jesus." Enjoy!
We're taking a break! Listen to some old favorite episodes, find a new podcast, or start your own! See you in November!
Coastline Family, we're excited to share this conversation that Shawn had with Ed Lassiter about the Uncommon Life Ed has led. No words can really do what Ed shares justice, so listen and enjoy!
We interrupt our Uncommon Life series to bring you a conversation with Hunter, Peter, Garrick, and Shawn about the potential church merger between St. Andrew's and Coastline. We talk about the story of our partnership, share our excitement towards the future, and even spend time praying for God's wisdom in all of this. If you have questions about what's to come, this is a great place to start.
We're really excited for you to get to know Peter Dunn, the Senior Pastor of St. Andrew's. Peter talks about his story, how he got into ministry, and a little bit about how Coastline Youth and St. Andrew's Youth are forming one new, super youth group!
Hunter and Shawn talk about the next teaching series at Coastline Covenant, The Uncommon Life. We're excited to bring you interviews and conversations with different believers about the ways in which they choose to follow Christ, even when it feels like they're going against the norm.
All 6 Coastline staff sit around the table and talk mornings, evenings, and doing church somewhere in between. We are SO excited to see what God has for us in this next season at Coastline!
Enjoy this conversation with Michael about Psalm 139, parenting, and songwriting. Michael also talks about prayer, which... come on. That's about as good as it gets!
ALSO, we want to know: What passage changed YOUR life? Email Hunter (hbabcock@coastline.family) with your passage and a few sentences, a paragraph, a voice memo... anything that can communicate how that particular passage changed your life!
Hunter sits down with Richelle to discuss Joshua 1:9, a passage that's changed her life. Enjoy a conversation about streaming services, courage, moving, and grief!
We're back from a break with a new series on the podcast: It Changed My Life. We're talking to some other folks about some parts of Scripture that impacted them in major ways. Today, Hunter sits down with Nikki Hernandez to talk about Psalm 126, her journey through some dark parts of life, and the television program Friends. We hope you enjoy!
In this week's episode, Hunter, Richelle, and special guest Sue MacKenzie talk all things VBS! Memorable themes, the way that the songs get stuck in your head, what makes a good VBS, advice for parents, and how the whole entire church can get involved. Even if you don't have kids or aren't volunteering, this episode is for you!
BUCKLE UP! Hunter, Richelle, Michael, and Nikki are in charge this week and decided to record a podcast about (but not limited to): Finding Dory, dad jokes, bees, a Mazda 626, what we each bring to the team, our individual hopes for Coastline, and how Nikki doesn't know the podcast catchphrase. Does this sound like an episode for you? Maybe!
No new episode this week... we want you to re-listen to the past few Through the Valley episodes! There's so much wisdom in these interviews, so we want you to go back and listen again!
We'll see you next week for an all new episode.
In the final episode of our Through the Valley companion series, Hunter and Nikki talk with Jean Cheng Gorman, the Director of Ministerial Health in the Evangelical Covenant denomination. Jean was instrumental in the Through the Valley teaching series, and she dispenses an incredible amount of wisdom as she talks about what makes us healthy, the difference between spiritual direction and therapy, and how we can grow after trauma. This is a MUST LISTEN!
Shawn and Hunter are excited to be joined this week by Jeremy Gordon, a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist here in the South Bay. Jeremy has an incredible amount of both clinical and spiritual knowledge, and he takes us deep as we discuss trauma, spiritual hurt, and practical ways we can experience freedom with God. This is a great conversation and we hope you enjoy it!
We interrupt our conversations about Through the Valley to celebrate our first birthday! All 6 of the Coastline team reflect on the past year, God's faithfulness, our excitement about Coastline, and the future. Thanks to our listeners, congregants, and friends who have helped make this experience unforgettable. The best is yet to come!
We're so excited to bring you a conversation that Shawn and Hunter had with Meghan Lawson. Meghan is a mom, proud-Texan transplant, and an incredibly wise and generous therapist who talks with us about trauma, our bodies, how we can cope with triggers, and the place of therapy in the church. This is such a great episode... we really can't thank Meghan enough for her time and wisdom.
If you want to connect with Meghan, you can find her website right here: https://www.lawsoncounselingcenter.com/

We have an incredibly special guest this week on the Coastline Covenant Podcast! Shawn and Melinda Hurley had the chance to have a conversation with Karrie Garcia, who is a pastor, life-coach, and CEO. Karrie is the brains behind OWN THE LIGHT, an event that Coastline is hosting on May 20th!
This is an incredible conversation: Karrie tells us a bit of her story, the story behind Own the Light and the Freedom Academy, our addiction to performance, honesty, and what it means to Own the Light! For more information and tickets for the event, go to OwnTheLightTour.com.
If you've been at Coastline at all over the past nine (!!) months, you've likely heard a sermon out of the book of Acts. Well, Hunter, Shawn, and Garrick debrief the experience of preaching this long of a teaching series. What was surprising about Acts? What are people (hopefully) walking away, saying? These questions and more are all discussed. Finally, we look ahead to the next teaching series at Coastline; we're calling it "Through the Valley." If you want to know more, make sure you listen. Thanks!
All 6 of the Coastline Staff discuss Holy Week, the beauty of Easter Sunday, and how much we love our church. Come for the fun stories about the behind-the-scenes of the past week, stay for all the special guests that join us live from Easter!
Some strange hissing noises appear throughout this episode. Sorry!
Hunter, Shawn, and Michael discuss Maundy Thursday and its theological background, the pain of Good Friday, and the joy of Easter. This is a fun episode with a lot of depth, so listen and get ready to come to St. Andrew's on Thursday and Friday, Veteran's Park on Saturday, and Peninsula High School on Easter Sunday!
Hunter, Garrick, Nikki, Michael, and Richelle look back on Easter's past to talk about traditions, memories, and what makes this day so special. Also, there's a lot of talk about what's to come and what YOU can expect from Coastline this Easter! We're excited to talk about the theological significance behind why we do certain things for Easter (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, etc.), so if you have questions you'd like for us to answer, email hbabcock@coastline.family
We're back with a special episode! All SIX Coastline staff sit around the table to discuss major changes (the end of the 6pm!) and exciting things we have on the horizon here at Coastline (Holy Week, Own the Light, VBS, and more)!
We want you to be in the loop, so get your calendar out and plan on being at EVERYTHING!!!!
An announcement (we're taking the whole month of March off) and an explanation (Hunter is injured, new series coming April) regarding the Coastline Covenant Podcast. We'll see you all in a few weeks!
Hunter, Nikki, and Garrick talk about their own personal reflections after listening to the Christianity Today podcast, "The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill." This is neither a recap nor rehash of the content of that podcast: what you have here is three Christian leaders talking about the reflections from this popular podcast series.
If I were to summarize this week's episode, I'd say it is about humility, love, and embracing a slow way of life. We hope you enjoy!
Hunter and Nikki sit down with our friend David Krall to talk church transitions, small group models, and the difference between missional living and traditional evangelism. If you're at Coastline, chances are you've caught the vision that we're trying to cast: as believers, we're constantly on mission. David gives us some really helpful language and some infectious enthusiasm as we think about how we can better reach "not yet believers!"
The Coastline Staff are in Chicago at Midwinter, the Evangelical Covenant's annual conference. It's been quite an illuminating experience, and we've been having an absolute blast learning, growing, and getting exposed to the Covenant denomination. This episode contains two interviews: the first is with Michael and Nikki about worship, women in the Covenant, and the cold weather, while the second conversation is Garrick and I reflecting on a great conversation we had with the Covenant's president, John Wenrich. Thanks for listening and we'll see you at the Bean!
We're so excited about our new BOOK CLUB podcast that we've decided to upload this first episode on our main podcast feed. If you like what you hear, please subscribe! If you don't... no worries! Next Thursday there will be a brand new episode of the Coastline Covenant Podcast!

To buy the book: Where Prayer Becomes Real
--
Welcome to episode 1 of our Book Club Podcast! Hunter and Michael discuss the introduction, Chapter 1, and Chapter 2 of Where Prayer Becomes Real. The conversation ranges in topics from prayer, our favorite books, and the ways in which our Christian life is truly on display as we come before God's presence. Stick around until the end for a prayer exercise right out of the book!
Remember, if you have ANYTHING you'd like to share from this chunk of chapters or the next (Chapters 3 & 4), please email a voice memo to hbabcock@coastline.family. We'll play it on the podcast! Thanks!
Happy New Year! Hunter and Shawn discuss COVID, youth ministry, and have a long discussion about New Year's Resolutions. Are they wise? Are they helpful? Are they achievable? They talk about all that, but ultimately land on the deep spiritual truth that God is always inviting us to partner with Him as we change. Thanks for listening!
Welcome to the final episode of 2021 AND the final episode of our Christmas Hymn series!
Hunter, Michael, and VERY special guest Mary Beth Eroen discuss "Joy to the World", in addition to the role of children's choir in Christmas, what makes Christmas joyful, and everything in between. Make sure you listen closely as we have a special guest drop in and apologize to Mary Beth over things said in the past (about "Mary Did You Know?").
Thanks SO much for listening this year, and we're excited to keep bringing you the Coastline Covenant Podcast in 2022!
OUR LONGEST EPISODE YET! In the third week of our Advent song series, Hunter, Michael, and special guest Andrew Faris discuss Christmas traditions through the eyes of children, musicians like Vulfpeck and Warren Zevon, and "Mary, Did You Know?" Then they discuss "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing", Charles Wesley, and the beauty of hymns. Nothing says Christmas spirit like... welkin? Listen and find out!
Welcome to week 2 of our Advent series! Hunter, Nikki, and Michael go DEEP on "O Come, O Come Emmanuel." The trio discuss Christmas in Minnesota, Christmas trees, and the etiquette of returning Christmas gifts. After listening to Future of Forestry's incredible version of the song (we love it, please don't sue us!), they discuss the minor keys of life, its unique structure, and Psalms of disorientation. This conversation is long... but it ROCKS. Merry Christmas!
Welcome to Advent on the Coastline Covenant Podcast! Each week this December, Hunter, Michael, and some specials guests are taking a deep dive into Christmas hymns that you know and love.
There's a depth to Christmas that these songs help us enter into, and we can't wait to reflect on, respond to, and remind ourselves of the true reality of this season.
This week, Hunter, Michael, and Shawn talk about "O Come All Ye Faithful". We talk about the theological background of the song, the history of the song, and the incredibly profound truth that this song invites us into. Come for the Honda Days talk, but stay for Michael's incredible reflections.
Thanks for listening and Merry Christmas!
Join Hunter for a quick Thanksgiving devotional about grace, food, and one of his favorite movies.
This is a very different episode: it's meant to be listened to as you would a devotional or a quiet time guide. Put it on when you have some space today or any day! We hope you enjoy it, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
All SIX of the Coastline Staff sit down and discuss the biblical concept of thanksgiving, as well as the holiday of Thanksgiving! We talk traditions, memories, theology, and what we're thankful for. This episode was a BLAST to record and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did! Happy Thanksgiving from Coastline Covenant!
Shawn and Hunter discuss Shawn's sermon on Halloween at Coastline: a sermon about fear, Jesus' triumph on the Cross, and the way that Satan lies to us. There's depth, humor, and a lot of nerdiness! Hope you enjoy, and we'll see you next week and every week after that!
Join Hunter and Michael as they discuss their reflections from their conversation with Dr. Strobel, honesty before God in prayer, and a recap of the prayer trainings that Michael has been leading for members of our Coastline Family. Stay through to the end for more information on our NEW PODCAST: Coastline Covenant Book Club, where we're reading Where Prayer Becomes Real by Kyle Strobel and John Coe together in the beginning of 2022! More information on that to come!
Hunter here with a request: GO BACK AND LISTEN TO THE PAST TWO WEEKS. If you've already listened, listen again! We have a lot of stuff coming soon that launches out of our conversation with Dr. Strobel, so we want everyone to have listened. And if you think this might be a helpful resource for some, send it their way! We want as many people as possible to hear Dr. Strobel's wisdom surrounding growth as a Christian.
Be on the lookout for some fun stuff next week... and every week after that!
Here's the conclusion of Hunter and Michael's conversation with Dr. Kyle Strobel. In this episode, the conversation takes on a communal focus, as we discuss how we can abide in Christ in community. Kyle also talks about prayer, along with his impetus for his new book Where Prayer Becomes Real, which you can get here.
We are so thankful for Dr. Strobel for his wisdom and his time. This is a valuable conversation that Michael and Hunter will continue next week!
We at Coastline are EXCITED to share this one with you: Hunter and Michael sit down with Dr. Kyle Strobel. Dr. Strobel is a speaker, author, theologian, and professor at Talbot Theological Seminary. In this week's conversation, we discuss Kyle's journey towards his position at Talbot, some misconceptions about spiritual formation, and plenty more! Make sure you listen to this episode before next week's conclusion. BIG THANKS to Dr. Strobel. You can find his new book here, we really recommend it!
Happy (belated!) Birthday, Shawn! In this episode, Hunter, Garrick, and Shawn discuss youth ministry post-COVID and the 6PM service. Both of these things have been extended conversations among staff at Coastline, and we're REALLY excited to give you a peek under the hood as to how we're thinking through these things.
We want to hear from you! Did we do the right thing? Did we do the wrong thing? Let us know!
Hunter, Michael, and Shawn discuss all things communion: the theology, the history, and the way that it’s been done in our previous church contexts. Then, Shawn and Michael discuss how they’ve been thinking through communion at coastline and what we can expect this Sunday as we take communion. We'll see you this Sunday at 4 or 6 to enjoy this sacrament (ordinance?) together!

Welcome back! In this episode, Hunter and Garrick discuss Coastline Community Groups, small group ministry, and the importance of table fellowship. This is pure Garrick nerd-fest, so if that sounds like something you'd like to listen to... you're welcome!
We're taking the next two weeks off to focus on launching the next chapter of Coastline. We'll see you back here on September 23rd with brand new episodes!
In this episode all FIVE of the Coastline Staff answer one question: How do you connect with God?
Well, there are more questions after that, but that's our jumping off point. Enjoy this episode as we talk about spiritual formation, spiritual discipline, ways to connect with God, and more!
Hunter, Shawn, and family theologian Andrew Faris discuss Michael Graham's article, "The Six Way Fracturing of Evangelicalism." In this long conversation, the guys talk about the things that divide us, how to navigate those divides, and the ultimate importance of church unity. If you haven't read the article, you can read it here. Otherwise, sit back, grab a notebook, and get ready!
Join Hunter, Garrick, and Shawn as they discuss the book of Acts! We're spending the next several months preaching it, so we decided to have a brief conversation about the book's context, main themes, and why it is extremely relevant for us today. Don't miss it!
Hunter, Richelle, Garrick, and Shawn finish answering your questions. Topics discussed: ministry, seminary, Chuck E. Cheese, being an adolescent, and the Covenant denomination. Congrats to the winner of the books, Michelle Stout! Thanks for all the questions and stay tuned for more fun on the way!
Join Hunter, Richelle, Garrick, and Shawn as they answer YOUR questions. The team discusses art, music, podcasts, and food! Stay tuned for the second installment next week where we discuss more theological things, the Covenant denomination, and reveal WHO WINS THE BOOKS!
Hunter talks to the "Family Theologians" (or nerds) at Coastline Covenant, Andrew Faris and Dr. Jeannine Hanger about answering big questions, how theology is family business, and what to expect from their team-taught message THIS Sunday at Coastline.
ALSO, this is the last week we're accepting questions for our Q+A Podcast! Remember, to submit questions to hbabcock@coastline.family with the subject line, "I Have A Question for the Podcast!" By doing so, you're entered to win not only one but FOUR BOOKS that we've talked about on the podcast. Thanks!
Shawn and Hunter discuss the philosophy behind creating a teaching series: How are they successful? When are they too long? What do you keep in mind when planning them out? They discuss these questions and more, ending with a conversation about Coastline's UPCOMING teaching series. Don't miss this episode and don't forget to send in questions to hbabcock@coastline.family!
Hunter, Garrick, and Shawn discuss all things camp: our experiences, how they've shaped our faith as adults, and ways that our Coastline Family can help rally around our students as they go to camp this week! I hope this week's episode transports you back in time to some of those wonderful camp memories!
Don't forget to send a question in for the Q+A Podcast! Send an email with subject line "I Have A Question for the Podcast" to hbabcock@coastline.family for a chance to win Tim Morey's book!
I thought Garrick's sermon on Sunday was incredible, so I invited him to talk about his sermon prep process and how this particular Psalm entered his life. And then, for your listening pleasure, I added the sermon audio from Garrick's sermon on 7/4! Enjoy this and don't forget to send in questions for our Q+A podcast!
Hunter sits down with fellow church planter Tim Morey to discuss his INCREDIBLE book, "Planting a Church Without Losing Your Soul." Tim is brilliant and this was a great conversation!
REMINDER: If you want to win a copy of Tim's book, submit a question for upcoming Q+A Episode by July 19th! Email hbabcock@coastline.family with the subject line, "I Have a Question for the Podcast" to be entered. No question is too deep! No question is too silly!
Hunter, Michael, Richelle, and Shawn talk about the Biblical mandate to rest. They discuss their own rhythms, the difficulties of establishing a rhythm of rest in our busy lives, and the value of Sabbath, especially in Summer. There will definitely have to be another episode about this... we barely scratched the surface!
Hunter sits down with fellow pastor and church planter Jon MacDonald to discuss his history with church planting, wisdom for both staff and volunteers, and the most important lessons he's learned. Jon is incredibly generous with his time and advice, so take some notes and enjoy this GREAT episode!
Hunter, Michael, Garrick, and Richelle process all things Coastline's Launch Service: worship, teaching, the family environment, and the great hot dogs on the patio! Even if you didn't make it to the service, there's a lot of wisdom in this episode! Also, thanks for all the kind words and listens thus far! We have so much more to come.
It's the FIRST EPISODE OF THE COASTLINE PODCAST!
As we head towards our launch, we wanted to look back on this "pre-launch" season and discuss where we've seen God move. In part one of two, Richelle, Michael, and Hunter discuss the journey they took to get to Coastline, how they hope God moves, and deodorant. We are so excited to launch - see everyone on Sunday!
In our second first episode, Shawn, Garrick, and Hunter discuss the story of Coastline, all of the surprises of planting a church, and the rejected names for Coastline. We loved these look backs as they get us even more excited to launch forward to weekly meetings! See you all on Sunday at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at 4 and 6pm!
We are SO excited to announce that we are launching a weekly podcast! Join us each Thursday as we have conversations about how to be boldly biblical, wholly worshipping, Spirit seeking, and fully family.
