o For the 19th year, Baldwin Bone & Joint, P.C. will host this important community
outreach project, and again partnering with Baldwin County Public Schools –
contributors of over 85% of shoes donated. For the second consecutive year, the local
orthopaedic practice will partner with City Hope Church to achieve excellence in
distribution of shoes to those in need.
o Since its inception, response to the campaign has grown from 200 pairs donated in 2004
to a record-breaking 2,728 pairs contributed most recently. Shoe donations for 2023 are
being accepted now, with final shoe drop-offs received at the 2023 Azalea Trail Run on
Saturday, March 25, in Mobile, Ala.
o Baldwin County students will once again be rewarded for collecting the highest number
of shoes with money for their schools’ new P.E. equipment. Baldwin Bone & Joint will
award cash prizes to P.E. programs to the top three Baldwin County Public Schools who
donate the most shoes. In addition, the class that brings in the most shoes overall will
receive a Chick-fil-a party and the teacher will be awarded a cash prize provided by City
Hope Church.

About Darwin Singleton:
2023 marks Darwin's 43rd year of either anchoring or reporting television news. Darwin now wakes up the Gulf Coast as co-anchor of NBC15 Today, teaming up with longtime friend and co-anchor Kelly Foster. Darwin will still offer up on-site reporting, as well as the occasional feature segment that has made him a fixture in the Mobile/Pensacola television community since 1987!
Darwin was born in Hazard, Kentucky in the Appalachian Mountains.
He worked in local radio in high school and community college before transferring to the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He then worked in radio in Lexington until 1980, switching to television news.
Darwin served as South Kentucky Bureau reporter and, later, police beat reporter for CBS affiliate WKYT-TV in Lexington. He became weekend anchor in his hometown of Hazard for the CBS affiliate WYMT-TV.
In 1987, tired of the snow and cold of winter, Darwin headed south to the Gulf, landing at the local CBS affiliate in Mobile. Late in 1999, Darwin accepted a position at WPMI NBC15 News as a feature reporter with his popular "Here's Darwin!" reports. In 2014 Darwin made the transition to the a.m. anchor desk, giving him another opportunity to communicate with his loyal viewers.
“When I first came to Mobile, my intention was to stay a couple of years and move on,” he says. “Well, that was 30 years ago! Mobile has shown me amazing support over the past three decades. And I’m proud to see how the city and region has progressed. We’re just now hitting our stride, and it’s a great time to be in Mobile!”
Darwin owns a century-old home in Midtown Mobile, in the city's Old Dauphin Way Historic District. He’s a huge support of Mobile’s vibrant downtown. And here at NBC15, Darwin’s passion for Carnival has earned him the nickname of Mobile's Mr. Mardi Gras!

Dressing the Abbey weaves fashion, history, and popular culture into an exhibition featuring the wardrobe from Downton Abbey™, one of the most widely watched television dramas in the world.
The exhibition features thirty-five costumes worn by men and women and invites viewers to discover the turbulence of the Edwardian era and the cultural impact of the First World War. From rich country tweeds, to sumptuous evening gowns, to a starched footman's livery, the textiles in this exhibition speak to a transformational moment in art, fashion, design, and history.

About the History Museum of Mobile:
The History Museum of Mobile is where Mobile’s story begins! Three sites - the History Museum of Mobile, Colonial Fort Condé, and the Phoenix Fire Museum - bring Mobile’s past to life for tens of thousands of visitors each year.
Start your visit at the History Museum of Mobile, where over 20,000 square feet of exhibit space interpret Mobile’s history from pre-Colonial contact to the modern Port City. Don’t miss the new children’s discovery room, where families can explore a French ship, play real African drums, try on colonial clothing, practice basket weaving, and more! Special exhibitions are always changing, so be sure to check the schedule. Your admission also covers Colonial Fort Condé, a partial reconstruction of the 1723 fort built when the French founded Mobile. And don’t miss the Phoenix Fire Museum, where horse-drawn steam engines and antique ladder trucks bring to life Mobile’s proud history of volunteer firefighting.
In March of 2020, the History Museum of Mobile announced a partnership with the Mobile County Commission, the City of Mobile, the Alabama Historical Commission, and community leaders in Africatown to create a landmark exhibition at the under-construction Africatown Heritage House. The nationally anticipated Clotilda: The Exhibition will tell the story of the people aboard the last slave ship to the United States. The pieces of the Clotilda that have been recovered from the shipwreck will be on display in the exhibition, on loan from the Alabama Historical Commission. The exhibition has been curated, developed, and designed in conjunction with the local community and the wider descendent community, and in consultation with experts around the country. When it opens, History Museum of Mobile will operate the Africatown Heritage House as a fourth site.
The History Museum of Mobile is the five-time recipient of the “Best Museum” Nappie, Mobile Bay’s people’s choice award. In 2021, the museum received two awards for innovative programming: the Main Street Mobile’s Chairman’s Certificate and Visit Mobile’s MOBie. The History Museum of Mobile is proud to co-host the 2024 American Association of State and Local History conference. Between the warm climate and wide range of activities, Mobile is a favorite of snow birds seeking sun-drenched recreation, water sports, diverse dining experiences, and relaxing landscapes. Mobile is a seafood lover’s paradise. Not only can you find fabulous seafood restaurants and markets in nearly every part of Mobile, but the seafood caught, sold, and served here originated in the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta—America’s Amazon—as a major spawning area for several delectable species. OCTOBER IS NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
Mobile, Al. – Efforts to raise awareness of domestic violence will be made throughout the month of
October. Please see the attached calendar of events. Also, please consider running our PSAs that have
been provided to media, attending and/or promoting events, and/or having a Penelope House
representative appear as a guest to discuss Domestic Violence, assistance available through Penelope
House, and our DV Awareness Display.
What: “Domestic Violence- Traffic Lights” is the theme for this year’s Domestic Violence Awareness
Display- lights of a traffic signs with messages to end DV (red), warning signs to beware of DV (yellow),
and go with healthy relationships (green) made by those in shelter and transitional living, staff, and
community partners
Where: The display will be at Government Plaza Oct. 3-14, ArtWalk Oct. 14 evening, Providence
Hospital Oct. 17-24, and the Mobile Regional Airport Oct. 24- Oct. 31; social media as well.
Why: To educate citizens that Domestic Violence affects the entire community, to help victims of
Domestic Violence break their silence and seek help, and to recognize the importance of law enforcement
in addressing Domestic Violence (protecting victims and holding abusers accountable)

The mission of Penelope House is to provide safety, protection, and support to victims of domestic
violence and their children through the provision of shelter, advocacy, and individual and community
education. In 2020 despite the pandemic and two hurricanes, Penelope House sheltered 252 adults and

Something New This Year! -The Cookery Project. This year, we are adding a Pre-race Pasta Party Packet Pickup with food provided by The Cookery Project, a local non-profit that helps kids learn about nutrition, cooking healthy foods and teaches them their way around the kitchen in general.
Mission: The mission of this event is to raise as much money as we can each year that can be disbursed to Local patients, while they are in treatment and funds are not available for personal needs. We provide funds that are used for mortgage payments, rents, utilities, groceries, gas cards, co- payments, insurance premiums, tests not covered by insurance, medications, genetics testing when applicable and other various and sundry expenses that arise.
Goal: Our goal is to create a family friendly event that the community can look forward to each year and feel like they are making a difference here, in our neighborhoods. This is a grassroots effort to put money into the hands and households of the actual patients who are suffering and who need help on a very urgent and personal level.

BBB Scam Alert: Beware of health care cons during open enrollment
Open enrollment is the time of year when people can enroll in a health insurance plan for the following year. The periods are different for different providers like Medicare.gov, Healthcare.gov, and individual employers -- but the thing they all have in common is that scammers will try to confuse and mislead victims focused on selecting their plans.
How the scam works BBB is seeing a convincing new phishing scam pretending to be an email from your employer. The message claims you need to review and approve your employment benefits policy during open enrollment. All you have to do is download a form or click a link to read the details. However, if you do so, you may be asked to share personal information, or you could even download malware onto your computer. Business email compromise scams like this have become increasingly common and sophisticated.
That's not the only way con artists are taking advantage of open enrollment season. BBB Scam Tracker has gotten many reports about scammers claiming to be a government representative who can help you navigate your Medicare or Affordable Care Act options. Scammers claim to be a “health care benefits advocate” or a similar title. These scammers allege they can enroll you in a better program than what you currently have. This new plan is cheaper, and you can keep all the same services. To get started, all you need to do is provide some personal information, such as your Medicare ID number. Of course, the call is a scam, and sharing personal information will open you up to identity theft.
In yet another common scam, callers try to frighten – rather than assist - victims with their health care plans. In one common scenario, scammers claim that your Medicare will be discontinued if you didn't re-enroll. Fortunately, this “Medicare advisor” can fix the situation – if you share personal information with them.
Tips to avoid open enrollment scams Selecting a health insurance plan can be challenging and complex. Be on the lookout for common red flags.
Be wary of anyone who contacts you unsolicited. Healthcare.gov and Medicare do provide legitimate help with figuring out which plan is right for you. These people — sometimes called Navigators or Assisters — are not allowed to charge for their help. If someone asks you for payment, it’s a scam. You will also need to contact them. They will not call you out-of-the-blue.
Be wary of free gifts and "health screenings." Keep a healthy level of skepticism any time a broker offers you free gifts or other special deals. Never sign up with a broker who offers you an expensive sign-up gift in exchange for providing your Medicare ID number or other personally identifiable information. Other times, brokers offer free "health screenings" to weed out people who are less healthy. This is called “cherry picking” and is against the Medicare rules.
Guard your government-issued numbers. Never offer your Medicare ID number, Social Security number, health plan info, or banking information to anyone you don’t know.
Go directly to official websites. If you want to make changes to your health care plan, go directly to Medicare.gov, Healthcare.gov, or your employer's health insurance provider. Don't click on links in suspicious messages.
Contact your employer directly. If you receive an unexpected email about benefits policies, ask your employer about it before you click on anything to make sure it’s legitimate.

Children’s of Alabama’s Second Annual Hooked on a Cure Event is Sure to be a Catch
ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Hooked on a Cure, a fundraiser to benefit cancer patients from the Alabama Gulf Coast
treated at Children’s of Alabama, will take place on Friday, August 26 through Saturday, August 27, 2022. Fishing
enthusiasts and friends in Mobile and Baldwin counties are invited to enjoy a day of inshore and offshore fishing at
Bear Point Harbor, located at 5749 Bay La Launch Avenue.
Crewmembers, sponsors and plus-ones are welcome to attend the Captain’s Meeting at OSO’s restaurant taking place
on Friday evening, where dinner, drinks, door prizes, a silent auction and live music by Blue Levee Band will be
available. On Saturday, fishing teams will set sail for the inshore and offshore tournament. As a family-friendly event,
guests are invited to listen while the Doc Johnson Band plays and watch as boats begin weighing-in from 4:00 to 8:00
p.m.
Four-man teams are eligible to register for the fishing tournament. The inshore fishing registration is $250 per boat,
while offshore fishing registration is $500 per boat – with an additional $25 to participate in the jackpot category.
All boats must be under the bridge by Bear Point Harbor by 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Children’s of Alabama patients and their families in the area are invited to attend the Hooked on a Cure event,
where they will be celebrated and honored.

Spring Hill College, Alabama’s oldest institution of higher learning, was founded in 1830 by Michael Portier, Mobile’s first Catholic bishop. Spring Hill is also the first Catholic college in the Southeast, the third oldest Jesuit college, and the fifth oldest Catholic college in the United States.
Bishop Portier purchased 300 acres of land to establish a seminary and boarding school. The site sat on a hill six miles west of Mobile and afforded panoramic views of the city and its harbor. Portier recruited two priests and four seminarians from France to staff the school. He originally intended the boarding school to provide students under the age of 12 with an education in classical and modern languages, mathematics, geography, astronomy, history, belles lettres, physics, and chemistry. Portier soon relaxed the age restriction, and the boarding population increased from roughly 30 students the first year to almost 130 two years later. Initially, the bishop himself taught Greek at the school and, due to the lack of priests, pressed seminarians into service as teaching assistants or monitors. Difficulties staffing the school persisted until 1847, when Portier recruited French Jesuits from Lyon to take over.
In 1932, the college launched an extension program with Saturday classes aimed at adults. For the first time, women were admitted as full-time students to the program. Successive presidents of Spring Hill, Patrick Donnelly, S.J., and Andrew Smith, S.J., brought landmark changes to the college after World War II. Both men viewed racial segregation as an ethical and moral dilemma, and in 1954 Smith presided over the enrollment of nine African-American students to the college. For the following decade, Spring Hill was the first and only integrated college in the Deep South.
The College has thrived with strong enrollments and support from alumni, friends and the Greater Mobile community. Today’s students live and learn on a beautiful and historic residential campus and are part of a close-knit living and learning community. Creating enriching opportunities, inspiring ideas and creativity and transforming students are all part of the Spring Hill College experience.
A few inspiring SHC stories:
Spring Hill led the way in desegregation among Southern colleges and earned the respect of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who mentioned the moral significance of Spring Hill’s initiatives in his 1963 “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” In 1956, Ms. Fannie Motley became the first African American graduate of the college. She was one of only two Mobile area students to graduate with honors that year.
The first internationally acclaimed chess champion was Paul Morphy, a Spring Hill alumnus who was regarded as the best in the world in 1854. Famed inventor Thomas Edison needed a chief engineer to help him in his work in 1912. His choice was Miller Reese Hutchison, an inventor in his own right and an 1895 graduate of Spring Hill.
For more than 25 years, the Spring Hill College Division of Philosophy and Theology has set the standard in offering programs on campus and in other Southern cities. Spring Hill offers its adult programs in theology not only in Mobile but also in Jackson, Mississippi; Birmingham, Alabama; and Atlanta, Georgia. Graduate and undergraduate degrees and certificates can be earned at all locations, or classes can be taken for personal enrichment. The program provides a study of all major areas of theology in the Catholic tradition (biblical, moral, historical, pastoral and systematic). It is ecumenical in perspective and designed for persons with varying levels of previous theological background. Dr. Joseph Miller ‘42, a research biologist, helped develop the treatment for Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome (IRDS).

The out and back 5K course will take participants from Tin Top Lane, over the Africatown Bridge and back. The 1 Mile course will take participants from Tin Top Lane and to the foot of the Africatown Bridge and back to Tin Top Lane.

About J.A.W.S.:
We have collaborated on an art exhibit/festival in celebration of Jazz, which is inspired by the Excelsior Band.
Our festival includes many art forms, (including the visual arts/author event/films & live jazz concert) which will be held annually at the University of South Alabama. It is called Jazz Art Writers South (J.A.W.S.) Festival and access to the exhibit/festival is free.
The art pieces are contributions from 8 Gulf Coast Artists, including Hosea London. Who placed art & photographs from his collection specifically featuring the Excelsior Band. The public has a unique opportunity to interact with the exhibit by QR codes placed throughout the exhibit galleries.
We have also partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of South Alabama to have artworks created by younger members of our community, which we have called - JAWS Youth. The public is invited to visit this exhibit and vote on the works created by the JAWS Youth.
Jazz Art Writers South (JAWS Festival) exhibit will be available for free to the public until June 30th. However, we are recognizing our artists contributions, including JAWS Youth with an award ceremony and jazz concert performed by the Excelsior Band on Thursday, June 16th. This again is open to the public and free to attend.

Detox/Residential:
- Renovation has started on our building. Listeners can ride by to monitor the progress toward developing the first Veteran, First Responder, and family member specific medical withdrawal (detox) facility in the Nation. Of course, all of this progress can not be accomplished with the generous support of community members, so we’re extremely grateful for all those who have given to our cause.
- We will also be making our way back to Montgomery in July to set before the State Health Coordinating Council. We will be letting everyone know how our community can support us toward our efforts to ensure the State Health Plan includes beds for our facility.
Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic:
- Hired 15 full time staff members and now have a team of over 40 people dedicated to our mission.
- We offer integrated behavioral and physical health care services to all community members regardless of their ability to pay.
- We are in the first year of our CCBHC grant project and are exceeding our goals
Community Integration:
- We’ve conducted 4-5 Mental Health First Aide training events and have trained about 100 community members in how to recognize signs and symptoms of community members who experience mental, emotional, and spiritual distress
- Continue to build partnerships with our local community organizations to build additional capacity to care. For example, USA Trauma (Austin), Ransom Ministries, Waterfront Rescue, etc.
- We’ve recently added a new program, H20—Helping 2 Overcome. This program focuses on building connections and relationships through water based programs. Currently, H20 has trips to dive in the Georgia Aquarium where Veterans get together with other Veterans and dive. H20 recently hosted a really successful fishing tournament benefitting their program. The money raised has already helped folks going through recovery learn to manage their symptoms through learning to dive.
- Finally, our Community Outreach and Professional Engagement program headed up by Dr. Charles Dent is building relationships and training opportunities for pastors, ministeries, and clergy members to assist us in addressing mental, emotional and spiritual distress.

Welcome to the Battleship Rugby Football Club The team has a storied history dating back to its formation in 1975. This includes two national championships in 1992 and 2001. Here’s a few things you will need to know to join the club and play for the team.
There are two aspects of playing rugby for Battleship. The first is the rugby team aspect. As a member of the team, you’re expected to attend practice and games. This is obviously the physical part of the game. For beginners, you’ll be trained in the proper and safe way to play the game. Be sure to ask a club veteran what “60” means.
The second aspect is the rugby club. The club has to pay for and maintain our clubhouse and practice fields. The club has many duties to keep the team on the field. As a member of the club, you’re expected to pay dues, attend fundraisers and participate in other club activities. You cannot be a part of the team without being a part of the club.
Battleship RFC is Mobile’s rugby team and competes against teams across the southern region. Anyone can join the team and everyone can be a fan!
Practice location for Men’s Club is at 1801 South Broad Street. Look for the Green Container and rugby posts. 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Riverside Recovery Fest: Door To Serenity, as the host of the event, has brought together a number of the Gulf Coast's leading services in health and human services as well as community businesses and outreach services. The event offers the community the chance to learn more about the myriad resources available to the recovery community and those who love and support them. Who benefits from the event? It is our hope that as visitors to the event, all of our guests will benefit by learning more about the community, the available services and how we can always help. The event also brings together people who share in the concerns that affect not only the recovery community, but also the greater community of humankind. The pathway to sobriety is difficult with even the most caring and constant support structures. Imagine the difficulties for those who are trying to break the chains of addiction only to find that the doors to those support structures are closed to them. That's the reality for many in our hometown who have been told that the labels attributed to them make them ineligible for what should be an equal opportunity to get the help needed on the path to sobriety. Cryptocurrency: the new trend on the block for consumers and scammers BBB study finds lack of regulation and consumer education equals major increase in fraud and financial loss
BIRMINGHAM, AL-Just as the popularity of cryptocurrency continues to rise, so do the number of complaints received by BBB Scam Tracker regarding cryptocurrency. In 2021, the number of complaints that involved cryptocurrency doubled from the previous, with financial losses nearly hitting the $8 million mark, which is only a drop in the bucket of losses, as the vast majority of them are not reported. An in-depth study conducted by BBB looked at the many facets of cryptocurrency and the ways scammers exploit the crypto market and steal from individuals. The study also found that a lack of regulation and consumer education when it comes to crypto results in dramatic increases in fraud and financial loss. “Scammers love to operate amidst confusion,” BBB Serving Central and South Alabama Communications Manager, Alex Derencz said. Since there are a lot of pieces relating to cryptocurrency that are not well-understood, that creates an opportunity for scammers to take advantage of consumers whether it is by getting people to invest in it or pay with it.” In the simplest terms, cryptocurrency is a form of digital money, where encryption technology allows anyone, from anywhere to make and receive payments. Building off of that, it takes the form of computer code lines that are supported by a decentralized computer system called a “blockchain,” with the crypto being stored in a “crypto wallet.” When it comes to crypto, it has a few features that make it attractive to scammers: ● It is relatively unregulated ● Difficult to recoup once it’s lost ● Not well understood by the general public ● Wildly popular Here in central and south Alabama, the cryptocurrency scams that were reported to our BBB Scam Tracker more than quadrupled from 2020 to 2021. One of the common ways scammers take advantage of folks in crypto scams is that they are contacted by “a friend” on social media telling them about the success they have had when it comes to crypto and are encouraged to follow suit. MPD victim advocates hosting Victims of Crime Awareness Walk
MOBILE, Ala. – Year round, victim advocates help crime survivors find their justice. Every April, they raise awareness in their communities about crime victims’ issues and rights during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. In commemoration of the week, the Mobile Police Department Victim Services Unit hosts its second annual Victims of Crime Awareness Walk. The department’s victim advocates hold the walk for victims of violent crime and for those who stand with the victims.
“It’s vital for crime victims to remain connected to law enforcement throughout the criminal justice process,” said Stacey Dallas Woodard, MPD victim advocate coordinator. “As a law enforcement-based victim services unit, we can make sure victims immediately receive trauma-informed care, safety planning, criminal justice support and other critical services.”
The Victims of Crime Awareness Walk takes place Friday, April 29 at 11 a.m. Participants will gather in the back of police headquarters, 2460 Government Blvd., at 10:30 a.m. and walk to Public Safety Memorial Park, 2301 Airport Blvd.
The City of Mobile Public Safety Director Lawrence Battiste and Chief of Police Paul Prine will speak at the event, along with a victim of crime, Nija Hill, whose 16-year-old son was taken by gun violence.
The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) leads communities throughout the country in their annual observances. This year’s theme is “Rights, Access, Equity, for all victims.”

Africatown Heritage House is a $1.3 million project spearheaded by Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. It is a collaborative community effort that will eventually house a History Museum of Mobile exhibit about 110 enslaved West Africans, the ship that brought them to Alabama, and the unique community of Africatown.

MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is kicking off its second annual Think Smart Before You Start spring safety campaign as students of all ages and their families prepare for the end of the school year festivities such as spring break, prom and the upcoming graduation season. Ideally, parents will set aside time with their teens to ensure safety is always part of their plans whatever the event or function. When many young inexperienced drivers will be on Alabama’s roadways traveling to and from proms or other school-related functions. Therefore, ALEA Public Affairs Officers partnered with local communities across the state and participated in a variety of prom promise events that reenforced the importance of sound decision making during this exciting time of the year. Secretary Taylor reminds parents to be aware of the hazards associated with many of the functions and festivities surrounding this time of year.Secretary Taylor added spring break travelers of all ages and those heading out right after graduation should plan their routes and inspect their vehicles to ensure they are functioning properly and are fully equipped with roadside emergency kits, water and other essentials. Several Alabama roadways are popular among out-of-state travelers headed to the beach for spring break and/or following graduation. ALEA Troopers will focus their enforcement efforts through the end of May on traffic violations that frequently contribute to crashes that result in injury and in some cases death. Priority during this enforcement period will be speeding violations, following too closely, impaired drivers and making improper lane changes as well as those not wearing seat belts and children who are unrestrained. One of the many goals of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is to prevent crashes in order to save lives, Secretary Taylor said. “All we ask is that everyone “Think Smart Before You Start.”
Seven Spring Safety Tips 1. Safety first! Review the law and discuss safety before your teens make plans for spring break, prom or graduation; and be sure you are aware of the route they will take, estimated arrival times, etc. 2. Buckle Up – no matter how short the trip. Everyone in the vehicle must buckle up. 3. Cell phones down. The driver must forget all distractions and focus on driving. 4. Obey the law. The driver must follow speed limits, do not follow too closely, do not make illegal lane changes, use the left lane for passing and move over for emergency vehicles. 5. No DUI! Hand over the keys if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. (Did you know over-the-counter and prescription drugs can have the same effect as alcoholic beverages?) 6. Have the conversation. Parents take the opportunity to share with your children how the consequences of their decisions can affect not only their lives but the lives of others, “never a right time to do the wrong thing.” 7. Monitor your teens if alcoholic beverages are around, particularly during prom and graduation seasons. Prior to the prom and/or graduation gatherings, remind teens not to accept rides from anyone who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. (Discuss a Plan B should this occur, whether it is to call home for a ride or to call a ride-share service.)

Overview Autism spectrum disorder is a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in social interaction and communication. The disorder also includes limited and repetitive patterns of behavior. The term "spectrum" in autism spectrum disorder refers to the wide range of symptoms and severity.
Autism spectrum disorder includes conditions that were previously considered separate — autism, Asperger's syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder and an unspecified form of pervasive developmental disorder. Some people still use the term "Asperger's syndrome," which is generally thought to be at the mild end of autism spectrum disorder.
Autism spectrum disorder begins in early childhood and eventually causes problems functioning in society — socially, in school and at work, for example. Often children show symptoms of autism within the first year. A small number of children appear to develop normally in the first year, and then go through a period of regression between 18 and 24 months of age when they develop autism symptoms.
While there is no cure for autism spectrum disorder, intensive, early treatment can make a big difference in the lives of many children
Many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show developmental differences when they are babies—especially in their social and language skills. Because they usually sit, crawl, and walk on time, less obvious differences in the development of body gestures, pretend play, and social language often go unnoticed.
In addition to speech/language delays and behavioral differences, families may notice differences in the way their child interacts with peers and others.

We also offer Family Support meetings where anyone who has a family member living with a mental health condition can share with other family members their frustrations, their fears, and receive support from other family members who have "been there".....our motto is "You Are Not Alone!"
4) We will be offering Peer Education and Peer Support in the next year as soon as we have facilitators trained and certified by NAMI Alabama.
5) We began our fall education series for the general public this past week (National Mental Health Week) with officers from the Foley Police Department and Baldwin County Sheriff's Department discussing the Crisis Intervention Teams in the respective municipalities around Baldwin County. Our next meeting, Tuesday, November 2 will focus on the new mental health court in Baldwin County and the difference between it and the civil commitment procedure under the jurisdiction of the Probate Judge. Probate Judge Harry D'Olive will be speaking and we have invited the new mental health court Judge Scott Taylor. Rep. Matt Simpson will join us if he does not have a conflict. December 7th we will spotlight the new mental health coordinator for Baldwin County, Patrice Davis who will share with us how mental health issues are being addressed within the school system. Her counterpart, from AltaPointe will be joining her for this important presentation. These meetings are all at 6:30 pm and will be held in person at the Foley United Methodist Church and on zoom for those who are unable to attend in person.

Command Master Chief Antonio "Tony" Perryman was born in Mobile, Alabama and entered the Navy in
June 1989 at RTC San Diego, CA. He attended Seaman Apprenticeship Training in San Diego, CA and
attended Quartermaster "A" School in Orlando, FL. His previous assignments have included USS
Independence (CV-62) in San Diego, CA and homeport change to Yokosuka, Japan. He reported to USS
Monterey (CG-61) Mayport, FL. Upon successful completion of this tour he transferred to shore duty OPNAV
CNO N3/N5 (Pentagon) Arlington, VA. He then returned to sea duty onboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in
1998 Norfolk, VA and it's during this tour that he was initiated to CPO. Following this tour he reported to
Afloat Training Group in 2002 Mayport, FL and during this tour he was advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer
and qualified as an Afloat Training Specialist. He then returned to sea duty Pre-Commissioning Unit Farragut
Bath, ME and then USS Farragut (DDG 99) Mayport, FL. He then transferred to USS Doyle (FFG 39) in
2007 Mayport, FL and it's during this tour that Master Chief Perryman was selected to the Command Senior
Chief Program. He reported to USS Robert G Bradley (FFG 49) in 2009 Mayport, FL as Command Senior
Chief and four months into his tour he was selected to Master Chief Quartermaster. Upon completion of this
tour he then reported as Command Master Chief of Strike Fighter Squadron Three Seven in Dec 2011 NAS
Oceana. Upon completion of this tour reported as Command Master Chief of Strike Fighter Squadron One
Zero Six in June 2013 NAS Oceana. Upon successful completion of this tour he reported as Command
Master Chief of USS Harry S Truman (CVN-75) in March 2015 until December 2017 Norfolk, VA. Upon
completion of this tour he reported as Command Master Chief of Program Executive Office of Ships (PEO)
December 2017 until January 2020 Washington DC.
In January 2020, he assumed his current role as Command Master Chief of Commander Carrier Strike Group
Two Norfolk, VA. He is a graduate of the Navy's Senior Enlisted Academy (NR Course Class #23) and the

This ordinance, if passed, will be a direct assault on some of the most vulnerable citizens, and criminalizes them for being homeless.
The purpose of Driftwood Village Project: to create a bi-partisan alliance of concerned citizens focused on the establishment of a homeless village in Mobile, like homeless solutions established in other cities across America, where the homeless of Mobile can reside in a safe place to get “anchored” and prepare for affordable housing.

An Ocean in My Bones
The Clotilda Descendants Association:
Our goal is to bring all things Clotilda to light … things infamously, and literally, done in the dark when that illegal ship set sail from Benin on the west coast of Africa with our terrified relatives crammed into overcrowded, filthy cargo holds.
WE will forever tell their stories, uphold their legacy, build the ‘Africatown Museum and Performing Arts Center’ to honor them and others who helped shape the community… and press for accountability of the crime that was Clotilda.
The Clotilda Descendants Association will present the second showing of the short stage highlight of “An Ocean in My Bones” on February 13, 2022. Doors will open at 1:00 show will start at 2:00 panel discussion at 3:00.
This year’s event will feature the stories of slave ship Clotilda and Africatown being brought to life in a short stage highlight titled “An Ocean in My Bones,” developed by playwright and award-winning director Terrence Spivey.
The roughly 45-minute one-act highlight is a precursor to the full-length stage play that will world premiere in Mobile, February 2024.
COVID restrictions will be enforced. Attendees must show proof of vaccination or negative COVID test. Masks required.

William Carroll is a native of Mobile, Alabama. After an eight-year absence, he returned to the Mobile City Council to represent District 2. He previously served the district from 2005-2013.
During his first tenure on the Council, William was responsible for establishing the Land Bank Program which helps to assist neighborhoods through expediting the title process on the abandoned and tax-delinquent property. This program still exists today.
William is a graduate of McGill-Toolen Catholic High School. He continued his studies at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Construction Engineering.
William also was a member of the football team where he was a three-time All-American. In 1993 he returned home to compete in the then Delchamps Senior Bowl. William is a member of FAMU’s Football Hall of Fame.
He is committed to serving his community. William serves on numerous boards and committees throughout the city while also dedicating his time to coaching youth football and basketball. William is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He is married to Johanne Trend Carroll and together they have three children.

Mr. Mask, also known as Steve Joynt, is the owner, editor, and publisher of Mobile Mask. He graduated from the University of Virginia and earned a Master's Degree in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York City.
He was a reporter for the Birmingham Post-Herald from 1985 to 2000. Among other awards, he was named to the Scripps Howard Editorial Hall of Fame in 1994. He authored a non fiction book, "Jack's Law: The Rise and Fall of Renegade Judge Jack Montgomery," published by Crane Hill in 1997.
Steve went to the Mobile Press-Register in mid-2000 as an assistant city editor. Among other duties, he was tasked with revamping the paper's coverage of Mardi Gras parades, as well as developing and assigning various feature stories about Mardi Gras.
Believing there was a need for even more coverage of Mardi Gras in this area, Steve left the Register in late 2011 to start Mobile Mask. In his spare time, he is an artist. You can get to his art web site by clicking HERE.
Mobile Mask started as a web site in January 2012. Our first magazine was published and went on sale in January 2013, serving as a guide to the 2013 Mardi Gras season. It was 68 pages and saddle-stitched (stapled). The 2018 issue was 100 pages and perfect-bound (flat binding, glued).
The Mask is a web site, a Facebook page, a Twitter feed, and an app (available for free on iTunes and the Play Store). But the real backbone of the operation is the magazine.
Our goal from the start was to give Mobile an attractive, informative guide to Mardi Gras. So many of our readers and followers tell us that we have enhanced their Carnival season, and we can think of no greater compliment.

JIM NAGY/Executive Director Jim Nagy was named to the position June 1, 2018, by Mobile Arts & Sports Association Chairman Mr. Angus Cooper II. In his role, he is responsible for both the football and business operations of the nation’s premiere college all-star game. While the Senior Bowl has long been regarded as the preeminent event on the NFL scouting calendar, the game has reached new heights over Nagy’s first three years, both on and off the field. Since taking over for former Cleveland Browns General Manager Phil Savage four years ago, Nagy’s overarching vision for game was to position it as the unofficial start of the NFL pre-draft process, which led to the organization’s trademarked mantra “The Draft Starts in Mobile”. Nagy is primarily responsible for the identification, evaluation, and selection of the top NFL prospects to be invited to the game, as well as serving as a liaison to the agent community representing those players. Under Nagy’s leadership, the Senior Bowl team is coming off a year in which it strategically and skillfully pulled off the event despite the extreme challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, something no other pre-draft event accomplished, including the NFL Combine.
The Senior Bowl remains an active community partner throughout the year with its youth NFL Flag league, charitable events such as the Senior Bowl Charities Celebrity Golf Classic, which raised $20,000 for Big Brothers/Big Sisters in its inaugural year last June, and the Turkey Bowl that helped feed 1,000 underprivileged families at Thanksgiving. Additionally, through the Mobile/Baldwin Athletic Partnership (MBAP), the Senior Bowl awarded over $50,000 in grant money for team equipment needs and donated Nike uniforms to several local public high school programs in the city of Mobile. In addition to his duties at the Senior Bowl, Nagy has worked as a draft analyst for ESPN, covering both the NFL Combine live from Indianapolis and the NFL Draft live in Nashville. He also does extensive work across various football media platforms, including regular appearances on NFL Network and NFL Sirius Radio, and he was named one of the “Top 50 NFL Twitter Accounts” by The Athletic in 2020.
Nagy, a native of Traverse City, Mich., graduated from the University of Michigan in 1996 and was honored with a career achievement award from the school in 2019. He broke into the NFL as an intern for the Green Bay Packers during their Super Bowl XXXI winning season and held various scouting roles over his 18 years in NFL personnel departments, elevating to national scout with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2009-2012. Prior to coming to the Senior Bowl, he spent five years as the southeast area scout for the Seattle Seahawks. Nagy was a part of six teams that reached the Super Bowl and four Lombardi Trophy Champions (Packers XXXI, New England Patriots XXXVIII and XXXIX, and Seattle Seahawks XLVII).
Nagy and his wife, Lindsay, have two children, son Hayden (16) and daughter Lillian (13) and they have lived in Mobile since 2007.

Lynn Henderson Oldshue/Our Southern Souls I started Our Southern Souls after writing a story about the bus riders of Mobile, Alabama, for my magazine, The Southern Rambler. I rode the bus for months listening to the stories of people who depend on public transportation for everything from work and school to shopping and appointments. I was frustrated when I couldn't fit everyone's story into the final version and I missed those interviews when the story was finished. My husband gave me the Humans of New York book filled with interviews on the streets of New York, and that was what I wanted to do. Our Southern Souls became five-minute interviews with strangers. I have to do at least one a day, but it is often more than that. I love listening to people's stories, but walking up to strangers and interrupting their lives is hard to do. Most people say yes and are kind and open and when it is over, we feel like were were supposed to meet. The stories are funny and inspiring, sad and heartbreaking, or a quick moment in time. GO Teal and White Day On Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, plan to wear teal and white to raise awareness about cervical cancer. The RSA buildings in Mobile and Montgomery will be lit in teal and white to commemorate the day.
Get Screened and Tested The Alabama Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for women who meet eligibility guidelines. Go Doc Go provides kits for at-home testing for HPV, the human papillomavirus.
Get the HPV Vaccine Eight out of 10 adults will get HPV in their lifetime. The HPV vaccine, which prevents six different cancers in men and women, is recommended for boys and girls ages 9 to 12 with catchup through age 26. Adults up to age 45 may get the vaccine as recommended by their doctor.

Dr. Eichold provides message on COVID-19 surge
MOBILE, Ala. — Dr. Bernard H. Eichold II, Health Officer for Mobile County, would like to share this
information to the community regarding COVID-19.
“Some sites in Mobile County have reported community transmission test rate at around 50 percent positive.
MCHD tested almost 4,000 people last week, which had a 30 percent positivity rate. Five percent or less is
an accepted national threshold.
“Omicron is the predominant variant, representing approximately 80 percent of the positive cases.
Obviously, Omicron is highly contagious.
“With this increased community transmission rate, MCHD recommends that anyone over the age of 2 --
regardless of their own vaccine status – wear a mask in the public, maintain social distancing and frequently
washing of hands for the next several weeks. Large gatherings should be avoided.
“If you have not done so, please get vaccinated. And if you are eligible, please get the booster shot. As we
have broken the community transmission three times in the past, let’s all work together for the next several
weeks to again have success.”
***In response to the recent increase in the number of positive COVID-19 cases, the Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is making changes to its services.
Family Health, the primary care division of MCHD, is temporarily closing its Dauphin Island Parkway Health Center at 2601 Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile. Medical services will be moved to other Family Health locations. To make an appointment, please call 251-690-8889.
MCHD’s COVID-19 Response Team is cancelling all previously announced outreach events planned for January. Efforts will be focused on providing vaccinations and testing at the Festival Centre location (Suite 101-A) at the corner of Airport Boulevard and Montlimar Avenue in Mobile. Starting this week, the hours at the Festival Centre for Monday through Friday are extended from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Both services remain available on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Here’s what makes me different:
I am a high school dropout. I finished the 10th grade and never went back. I took my GED and have some basic college.
20 years ago I stopped being a teachers aid at headstart and started breeding dogs. I worked at it and have worked on my grooming skills. I taught myself to groom. After about 13 years I started grooming professionally. I took a self pay online grooming course and groomed for a new pet store that shortly after closed due to their finances. When it closed I bought Kuddles n Kisses pet grooming in grand bay. At the time I was helping my mom take care of my dad that was dying. I financed that business and paid it off in 2 years. That was 8 years ago.
Since then I have meet some wonderful people. Dr Ann Branch. She is the authority on rabies for Mobile county. She has rabies clinics every weekend all over Mobile county. No appointment needed and it’s only $12. We will be trying to do this at the new location soon. We also do nail clinics with her at a couple locations. We are at B&B pet stop the last Saturday every other month starting in January. Half the nail cuts at B&B go to the shelter. Cut paws for a good cause!
Monday I paid cash for one of the oldest grooming businesses in Mobile. We take over ownership January 1. We will have 2 locations. Pampered pets in Mobile on Airport Blvd and our original location on hwy 188
What I would like to get across. It’s time for young adults to be thinking about their future and applying for colleges. College wasn’t for me. School wasn’t for me. I’m gonna take some classes on business and who know my get my associates but that will be to improve the businesses I have now. Think about a plan B. Think about trade school or apprenticeship. There are so many opportunities here in Mobile. Think outside the box and do what you love. If the service industry is your calling then be the best at it that you can possibly be and see just how much more successful you can be. I love my jobs. I have worked my way from generational poverty to being a business owner and not just one. It’s only 2 generations my family were share croppers. As long as you do what you love you’ll never work a day.

HIV-positive consumers seeking services from AALS are supported by licensed social workers on an on-
going basis for case management and life sustaining supportive services. Concurrent with service
provision, the case managers help consumers create a plan for independence, stability, and economic
self-sufficiency.
Through its SHELL Health Services, AIDS Alabama South is putting itself at the forefront in the battle
against this pandemic by making itself a one-stop clinic for HIV prevention and treatment. SHELL Health
Services provides state-of-the-art HIV testing, STI/STD testing and treatment, PrEP, as well as HIV
treatment. PrEP or (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a once-daily pill that is 100% effective at preventing
the body from contracting HIV.
Additionally, SHELL Health Services provides affirming and supportive healthcare to LGBTQ+

Misleading Social Media Ads: As you scroll through your social media feed, you often see items for sale from a small business. Sometimes the business even claims to support a charity to try to get you to order, or they offer a free trial. BBB Scam Tracker receives reports of people paying for items that they never receive, getting charged monthly for a free trial they never signed up for, or receiving an item that is counterfeit or much different from the one advertised. The 2020 BBB Scam Tracker Risk Report found that online purchase scams were the most common cons reported to Scam Tracker and the category with the most victims. Do your homework and research the company before ordering. Check out the business profile on BBB.org and read the reviews.

Social Media Gift Exchanges: Each holiday season this scheme pops back up, and this year is no different. A newer version of this scam revolves around exchanging bottles of wine; another suggests purchasing $10 gifts online. Another twist asks you to submit your email into a list where participants get to pick a name and send money to strangers to "pay it forward." There is even a twist about "Secret Santa Dog" where you buy a $10 gift for your "secret dog."
In all of these versions, participants unwittingly share their personal information, along with those of their family members and friends, and are further tricked into buying and shipping gifts or money to unknown individuals. And-- it's an illegal pyramid scheme.

Holiday Apps: Apple's App Store and Google Play list dozens of holiday-themed apps where children can video chat live with Santa, light the menorah, watch Santa feed live reindeer, track his sleigh on Christmas Eve, or relay their holiday wish lists. This holiday season, like last year when COVID-19 caused children to skip the traditional in-person visit with Santa, apps may play a more important role than ever. Review privacy policies to see what information will be collected. Be wary of free apps, as they can sometimes contain more advertising than apps that require a nominal fee. Free apps can also contain malware.

Alerts About Compromised Accounts: BBB has been receiving reports on Scam Tracker about a con claiming your Amazon, Paypal, Netflix or bank account has been compromised. Victims receive an email, call, or text message which explains that there has been suspicious activity on one of their accounts, and it further urges them to take immediate action to prevent the account from being compromised. Be extra cautious about unsolicited calls, emails, and texts.

Free Gift Cards: Nothing brings good cheer like the word 'FREE'. Scammers have been known to take advantage of this weakness by sending bulk phishing emails requesting personal information to receive free gift cards. In some of these emails, scammers impersonate legitimate companies like Starbucks and promise gift cards to loyal customers that have been supporting their business throughout the pandemic. They may also use pop-up ads or send text messages with links saying you were randomly selected as the winner for a prize. If you have received an unsolicited email with gift card offers, do not open it. Instead, mark it as Spam or Junk. However, if you opened the email, do not click on any links.

HARGROVE FOUNDATION BRINGS SPORTS LEGENDS TO MOBILE
(Mobile, Ala.) – The Hargrove Foundation will host its sixth annual gala at the Mobile Convention Center on
Thursday, December 2, 2021, in Mobile, Alabama. This year, all-star and all-pro athlete Bo Jackson, and Sarah
Thomas, the NFL’s first female referee, will serve as the featured keynote speakers.
“We are excited to welcome two exciting sports legends to the Hargrove Foundation Gala this year,” says Micki
Kohn, president of the Hargrove Foundation board of directors. “We look forward to joining together once again
with our community and embracing the spirit of giving for the causes we support.”
Bo Jackson is considered one of the greatest all-around athletes in history, excelling as an acclaimed NFL sportsman
and major league baseball player. He was drafted by the New York Yankees out of high school, but he instead chose
to attend Auburn University in Alabama. Jackson lettered in three sports at Auburn, but made his biggest impact on
the football field, where he was twice named a consensus All-American running back (1983 and 1985) and won the
1985 Heisman Trophy after rushing for 1,786 yards and 17 touchdowns. Jackson launched his professional football
career in 1986 when he was selected by the Los Angeles Raiders of the NFL - the same year that he made his major
league baseball debut. During his professional baseball career, he played for the Kansas City Royals, the Chicago
White Sox and the California Angels. In 1989, Jackson was named to the American League All-Star team during a
season in which he established career highs with 32 home runs and 105 runs batted in. The following year, he rushed
for 698 yards and five touchdowns over 10 games to earn Pro Bowl honors, thus becoming the first athlete to make
all-star teams in two major North American sports.
In April 2015, Sarah Thomas was one of nine new game officials added to the NFL officiating roster, making history
as the first full-time female official in the NFL. Legendary in her own right, her hat, whistle, and flag from the
September 13, 2015 game between Kansas City and Houston are now on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Thomas previously achieved a historic milestone in 2007 when she became the first female to officiate for the
NCAA’s Major College Football Division Bowl. In early January 2019, it was announced that Thomas would make
history again as the first female to officiate a postseason NFL game. To wrap up her 2020 season, Thomas shattered
the glass ceiling as she was selected to work Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Florida, making her the first female to ever
work a Super Bowl.
The Hargrove Foundation invites you to join the celebration of the Foundation’s 10-year anniversary, with more
than $2.4 million granted to support education, health and human services, arts and culture, and qualified sports
activities. In addition to the core sectors that the Hargrove Foundation supports, it has also provided $100,000 in
COVID-19 relief, offering assistance when needed the most. It is through the generosity of partners and the Hargrove
team that all 16 communities where Hargrove’s offices are located have been served.

Major Prine was born and raised in Prichard, Alabama and graduated in 1990 from C.F. Vigor High School. He is married to Kay Sayasane Prine of 26 years and has three beautiful children. He attends Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church and teaches Wednesday night bible study.
He has more than 26 years of experience and started his law enforcement career with the Chickasaw Police Department in 1995. He was accepted into the Mobile Police Academy in 1997 whereby he graduated at the top of his class earning the Academic Award, The Chief’s Overall Excellence Award, and was nominated by his peers to be the class president. In October 2001, he responded to a domestic call where he was shot multiple times, in the line-of-duty, with life-threatening injuries. After returning to duty, he subsequently earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a Graduate Degree in Criminal Justice.
Major Prine has served in many areas of the Department to include Patrol Services, Ranger Unit-Public Housing-Community Patrol, Criminal Investigations, FBI Violent Crimes Task Force, Major Crimes Unit, Narcotics and Vice Unit, the Mobile County Drug Task Force (Gulf Coast H.I.D.T.A.), and Field Operations. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in October 2013 whereby he assumed command of Precinct Three. In October 2020, he was promoted to the rank of Major where he currently commands the Field Operations Division. Major Prine has earned many accolades in his career to include the Chief’s Unit Award(s), Chief’s Unit Award(s), Chief’s Commendation, Commander Citation, Excellent Police Duty, Law Enforcement Commendation Medal, Wounded-in-Service, and the Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Bernard H. Eichold II accepted the position of Health Officer for Mobile County on May 1, 1990.
Born and raised in Mobile, Dr. Eichold has obtained multiple academic degrees from Tulane. These include Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Public Health degrees. “Without my education, I could not have served as many persons and organizations,” Dr. Eichold said at that time. “My father stated education is the key to opportunity.”
This love of learning has deep roots in the Eichold family. His father Samuel and mother Charlotte stressed the value of education and community service. Dr. Sam Eichold II was the first Professor Emeritus at the University of South Alabama’s College of Medicine. The Mobile County Public School System recognized his many civic achievements and support of education by naming Eichold-Mertz Elementary School on Government Boulevard in his honor.
Previously when the elementary students advance, they were given a printed bookmark to remind them of Dr. Sam’s sayings: “The Foundations of Life are based on Discipline, Desire, Determination, Discretion and Duty. The Virtues of Life are Courtesy, Cleanliness, Punctuality, and Loyalty.”
Dr. Sam Eichold was presented with the ACP’s Laureate Award in 1993. Two other honorees – John McGehee in 1997 and Steve Davis in 2007 – served with Dr. Bert Eichold in private practice before he became Health Officer.
Dr. Bert Eichold served his country in the U.S. Navy, retiring with the rank of Captain, F.S, M.C. In addition to his medical duties, he has been very active in many civic organizations. Some include, but are not limited to, Mobile United, BIG, Mobile ARC, Chair of the Community Foundation of South Alabama Board, and currently on the Vestry of Christ Church Cathedral.
Dr. Eichold has been an Instructor at Tulane and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of South Alabama. He has served as a Science Advisor and mentor to young scientists in the NASA DEVELOP program based at MCHD. He is Senior Aviation Medical Examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration.
He has received NASA and U.S. Navy medals, various civic/community awards and is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. He was presented with the William Henry Sanders Award from the Medical Association of Alabama in 2002 for his many years of service to public health. The Cottage Hill Civitan Club named him as the 2012 Mobilian of the Year.

Q When is the City election? A The municipal election is August 24, 2021; and a run off, if necessary, will be held on October 5, 2021. Q What exactly will we be voting on? A Election of Mayor and City Council Members. Q What determines whether someone will be in a run off? A Of the votes cast in each race, if one candidate receives 50% plus one vote, there is no run off. If no candidate receives at least 50% plus one vote, then a run off is held between the two candidates who received the most votes in that race. Q How long will the polls be open on August 24? A The hours of voting are 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Q When will the new Mayor and City Council Members take office? They will take office on the first Monday in November which is November 1, 2021. Q How many polling places will be used on election day? A We will be using 35 voting places. Q Is campaigning allowed on election day? A Yes, as long as it is done at least 30 feet from the door of the polling place. Q Will my voting place be the same as in county, state, and federal elections? A It may not be. City ward lines don’t always coincide with regularly used county ward lines, so some voters will be voting at a different location for this election only. Q Can I write in a name for an office in the City election? A. No. Alabama law prohibits write-in voting in municipal elections. Q Will I have to declare myself to be a Democrat or Republican in order to vote? A No, you will not be asked your party preference. Every qualified elector of your polling place will have the same ballot on which to vote. Municipal elections are non-partisan, which means no political party designations are listed on the ballot. Q Under what circumstances can someone vote an absentee ballot? A Under the following circumstances, a qualified elector can vote an absentee ballot: 1) those who expect to be out of the city on election day; 2) those who have a physical illness or infirmity which prevents his or her attendance at the polls; 3) those who expect to work a shift which has at least 10 hours which coincide with the hours the polls are open; 4) those who are enrolled as a student at an educational institution located outside the county of his or her personal residence; 5) those who are a member of, or spouse or dependent of a member of, the Armed Forces of the United States; 6) those who are named as a poll watcher at a polling place other than his or her regular polling place; 7) those who are a caregiver for a family member to the second degree of kinship and the family member is confined to his or her home; 8) those who are incarcerated in prison or jail and have not been convicted of a felony involving moral turpitude; 9) those who require emergency treatment by a licensed physician within five days of an election may apply for an emergency absentee ballot and may vote by returning the absentee ballot no later than noon on the day the election is held. The attendant physician shall describe and certify the circumstances as constituting an emergency on a special Q What is the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot? A Absentee applications returned by mail must be received no later than seven days prior to the election (August 17). Absentee applications returned by hand must be received no later than five days prior to the election (August 19). Q Can someone else pick up an absentee application for me or do I have to do it myself? A You can have someone else pick up your application; however,you must return the completed application yourself or place it in the mail. Applications can also be mailed out to those who request one by telephone. The Absentee Office cannot accept a ballot unless it is mailed to them or hand delivered to them in person by the voter.

For more than a century, Scouting has been serving communities. Now, Scouts across the nation are embarking on a Summer
of Service to help our communities. Scouts in Mobile, Baldwin, Washington and Clarke counties are gearing up to tackle
service projects, both big and small.
“Service comes in all shapes and sizes, and after the separation we’ve had in the past year the Mobile area needs our help.
Scouting has a long history of serving the community with projects that leave a positive, lasting impact. Many of our Scouts
have earned the Eagle Scout rank, which required them to complete a leadership service project in the community,” said
William Bryant, Scout Executive and CEO.
In the last year, the Mobile Area Counsel has given back to area counties with projects, drives and service activities including
providing food for 10,000 families through Scouting for Food Drive. Led by young men and women across the community,
these projects have given over 40,000 hours back to our community.
Scouts across the country are embarking on as part of the Summer of Service, a national initiative to give back to our
communities. Service is an integral element of Scouting and comes in many forms, but a special focus is being placed on:
- Health and wellness including learning and teaching CPR, organizing neighborhood blood drives, making and
donating face coverings.
- The environment including taking a trash bag and gloves on walks to pick up trash, building bird houses,
planting a rooftop garden and committing to using fewer plastic bags.
- Neighbors in need including doing a chore for someone who cannot do it themselves, collecting school supplies
for children in need, organizing a food drive for the food insecure or donating face coverings and hand sanitizer to
homeless shelters.
- Our communities including writing “thank you” notes to service members; first responders; or healthcare
workers, taking treats to a local fire station, or volunteer at a community center.
Scouts give back to their communities every day in ways big and small, Summer of Service amplifies that with the

We have 30 chapters that began in Baldwin County and spread to Mobile County, Saraland City, Satsuma City, Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Alexandrai, Decatur, and is still growing. We have elementary, middle, and high school chapters. Covid had a drastic impact on our chapters sizes, but we have had years with nearly 7500-8000 members statewide.

Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February each year.The main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients' lives.
Building awareness of rare diseases is so important because 1 in 20 people will live with a rare disease at some point in their life. Despite this, there is no cure for the majority of rare diseases and many go undiagnosed. Rare Disease Day improves knowledge amongst the general public of rare diseases while encouraging researchers and decision makers to address the needs of those living with rare diseases.
The National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) offers a Rare Disease Database as well as free webinars, fact sheets, infographics and other helpful materials for patients and caregivers. Mobile, AL - On Tuesday, June 22nd at 6:30pm internationally known, ecotourism expert, Costas Christ will present “The Transformation of Travel” as part of the ongoing Coastal Conversations speaker series. Christ’s presentation and discussion will address the power of sustainable tourism to make the world (and our region) better.
With a dynamic career spanning decades, Costas has gained many titles: Ecotourism Pioneer, Sustainable Tourism Visionary, Award-Winning National Geographic Travel Writer – to name a few – and his life’s work has helped shape the world of travel and tourism as we know it today.
In 1991, Costas helped to officially define ecotourism for the first time as “Responsible travel to natural areas that protects nature and sustains the well-being of local people.” He then worked to introduce these same principles into the global travel industry, helping to establish sustainable tourism based on three key pillars: environmentally friendly practices; protection of natural and cultural heritage; and social and economic benefits for local people.
His media appearances include Travel Channel, Good Morning America, National Geographic Channel, NatGeo Weekend, BBC World, CNN International, FOX News, National Public Radio and several film documentaries. Costas has served as a senior advisor to CEOs, nonprofit organizations, government officials and heads of state to achieve tourism development success based on a model of doing well by doing good.

The 2021 theme for the Summer Reading Celebration is Tails and Tales. The library invites the public to participate in a wide variety of activities for all ages including reading challenges, family bingo, camps, crafts, games and more! Everyone that completes the 400 minute reading challenge will receive a MPL water bottle and be entered into the grand prize drawing. The celebration lasts all June and July with special outdoor programs featuring local conservation and environmental groups such as the Mobile Environmental Studies Center, Share the Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Program, and the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.
Historically, the Mobile Public Library has been one of the largest summer library programs in the state. After closure during the pandemic and reopening in October, the library has been slowly but steadily getting larger numbers of the public back in its doors. MPL wants the community to know the library is open and we have tons of fantastic opportunities to keep everyone engaged this summer!
The Summer Reading Celebration is designed for all ages and it is especially important for our school-aged youth in combating the summer slide.“Summer slide” is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. Many students have struggled during the pandemic, and the library has tons of fun challenges and programs to keep growing minds active during the summer months. The people that we see each week, as we pass out meals, are in need of some personal hygiene products. Our intent is to provide hygiene product bags to as many as we can. With your support, I know that we can reach so many more. We are asking for donations in the form of cash, checks, money orders or any of the following items:
Shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, lotion, mask, socks, bottled water, mouthwash, soap or body wash, wash cloths, hand sanitizer/wipes, toothbrushes, large Ziploc bags, feminine hygiene products, deodorant, razors for men and women, sanitizing wipes, toothpaste, paper lunch bags. Love Me Anyway Ministries officially opened its doors on July 1, 2018. To date we have prepared and served over 7,000 meals. We’ve handed out clothes and shoes, visited hospitals and nursing homes, visited prisons and treatment centers, took kids camping and provide transportation to people in need. We partner with various organizations throughout the city.

When Frank DeBlasi was diagnosed with testicular cancer at the age of 29 he was very fortunate to have a wonderful support network, which included family, friends, and co-workers.
Recognizing this was not the case for several warriors battling this disease, the groundwork for a mission centered around children and young adults fighting all types cancer took shape.
The Baller Dream Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that lifts the spirits of children, young adults, and their families battling cancer. Those we serve, we do not call them patients, or beneficiaries, we call them "Ballers". A modern day term that suggests one is doing well, feeling well, and in control, our "Ballers" are incredibly resilient, courageous, and deserving of recognition.
We work very closely with many children's hospitals across the country and provide all sorts of major gifts, experiences, and activities. We have positively impacted the lives of hundreds of Ballers and their families, while building life-long relationships. The Baller Dream Foundation creates uplifting experiences for children and young adults battling cancer. We further our mission a number ways, none more important than our amazing events! Nothing brings us more joy than hosting these unique parties to honor our Ballers across the country!
Everything we build requires many contributors. We are very grateful for all of our supporters, especially the healthcare workers and caregivers who dedicate so much of their love, time, and energy to helping our Ballers overcome cancer. These individuals are the pillars of our community, or Ballerhood as we call it, and as such, they make everything we do possible.
Leading up to each of our event, founder Frank DeBlasi and a team member get to know each new Baller we’re honoring. This is an exciting part of the process as the Ballers share their stories, and we get the full scoop from their family members and significant others. It all comes to light in our Baller Ceremony, the special ingredient of our epic events! This is when Frank roasts each Baller in a very playful and comforting way. In doing so, he shares their inspiring stories with our adamant supporters, before revealing their personalized gifts!
We build lifelong relationships with our Ballers. Like our partners on the front lines, we’ll always be there for our Ballers no matter what’s going on in the world. We’re here to provide them with unwavering support and guidance in all avenues of life. To that end we host many informal gatherings with our Baller alumni and their families, and we love having them join us to induct new Ballers at our epic events. We also run several year-round programs to widen our impact in the community.
