In Episode 33 of Beyond the Picket Fence, Sandtrice Russell LPC, CPCS aka "Tree the LPC" shares her journey from a troubled youth to a professional counselor.
This Episode is probably one of my very favorite's. We dig into a trauma filled childhood, troubled juvenile years, a beautifully vulnerable self discovery, a surprise love story, and more. You may be surprised to hear that even therapists need therapists. This is yet, more proof that no one has it "all together" and that's ok!
We also discuss the importance of kindness!! It's simple really, love God and love God's people. Sandtrice is making a big dent in the mental health stigma and I'm so grateful she came on the show. Enjoy!

Society creates pressure. We often talk to women on this show but today we get the man's point of view.
Robert Pearson is the husband of a woman we interviewed last year. He asked to come on the show because he's ready to let himself be vulnerable and to share his own story.
In this episode we discuss in depth the trauma that comes from the "Be a Man" ideology. Robert grew up pretending everything was ok when in reality he lived in a home where you had to walk on eggshells around his father. As an adult he struggles with wanting to not become his father yet still learn to take care of himself and his family.

Welcome to Episode 31 of Beyond the Picket Fence, where we embrace the messy and go beyond the Picket Fence to find compassion and connection!
Today we are joined by Hanna Noel, who has a remarkable story about her father’s heart attack and the profound impact it had on her life. She realized that being real and vulnerable is a much more fulfilling life, and she is here to open up about her own pain points that she faced in her past. We will discuss her journey of self-discovery, how she was able to turn difficult events into an opportunity for growth, and the valuable lessons she has learned. We will also explore the importance of allowing yourself to be vulnerable and how it can lead to more meaningful relationships with others. We hope you can join us for this inspiring and insightful episode of Beyond the Picket Fence.

Thank you to our sponsor The Parlor Hair and Body Salon! Without your continued support, we would not be able to do what we do.
In this season 2 premiere of Beyond the Picket Fence, Dr. Heather Browne shares her story of growing up with a mother who suffered from paranoia schizophrenia and being widowed by a man who passed away from a heart attack.
She learned the hard way that grief is different for everyone. She reflects on how her own experience has shaped her outlook on life, and how it has helped her to understand and empathize with those who are struggling with grief in their own lives. She also provides advice to those who are dealing with loss, and encourages them to take the time to process their emotions in whatever way is best for them.
Another story from Beyond the Picket Fence that proves, no one has a perfect life! It's ok to take a break from keeping it all together!

Episode 2 "The Fertility Nurse"
When Brenley was here last, we talked about her infertility journey, but more than that, we discussed how no one prepares you for being a parent after infertility. Brenley wasn't expecting the guilt she would feel when not living up to the mother she expected herself to be. She had just started anxiety medication, was recovering, and finally enjoying motherhood again. Let's check in and see what's new with Brenley since we went "Beyond her Picket Fence".

This episode taught us a lot! I had no idea there were so many forms of OCD. KaLee let us in, to understand what life is like for people living with this disorder. This is a second educational conversation that opened my eyes to so much! We need to end the stigma by continuing these conversations! What more will we learn from KaLee since we last went beyond her white picket fence?

Episode 4 "Linkyn's Mom"
The moment I started the podcast I knew February would be dedicated to heart month. As a heart mom myself, I was excited to have a fellow heart warrior mom on the show. I wasn't aware of the guilt I would feel when honoring Tana's heart warrior Linkyn, who unfortunately earned her wings. This interview was the conversation that helped me realize the healing that still needed to take place in my life. It was a beautiful discussion and we saw how involved Tana is in her kid's lives. You know that thing you imagine would "NEVER" happen to you? Ok...Maybe there's a lot of those things, but today we're talking about rape. It goes without saying, this episode may be triggering!
This week we talk to author, speaker, and ghost writer Sheree Trask. Sheree has spent years helping others write their stories and finally, she published her own. So what is it like to go through this horrific event and how can we help other's who have experienced sexual abuse? The answer to that is deeply personal for each individual. This is Sheree's advice.

Have you noticed how often fairy tales use step-mother's as the villain? To be honest, I've never even thought about the challenges that accompany being the dreaded "step mom". Thankfully one of you has, and requested it as a topic on the show. I had no idea!!! All you step parents out there here is a BIG VIRTUAL HUG! I hope this episode helps you feel seen.
Meet Jen Rogers. This bonified step mom is brave enough to open up and get real about the difficulties of raising kids that are not your own. As always, I applied the pressure with some bold questions and she was straight up in answering all of them.
What's life like beyond the picket fence of a step mother? Let's find out.

You've heard the phrase, "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade". Does your soul reject it?!? This week's guest Heidi hated the phrase for a long time. So how did her podcast become all about it?
Heidi hosts a show very similar to mine where people come share their Lemon to Lemonade stories. She let me come on her show and share mine. As I shared my story I wondered, "what lemon to lemonade story was on the other side of the microphone?"
Naturally, she's here to share her story. The lemon to lemonade story that was beyond her "white picket fence" surprised me. We were halfway through the interview and she shared the memory of finding out her father committed suicide. With suicide awareness day just passing, it was perfect timing to share this message. We need to reach out to one another. Life can get overwhelming and no one is handed just one lemon. We really get an entire lemon tree of problems. How did she turn her lemons in to lemonade? Let's go beyond the white picket fence to find out.

Something really scary happened last week and it made me really have to consider boundaries.
As an empath it's easy for me to love and see everyone's side of the story. But sometimes loving people from a distance is the safer option. Let's talk about what happened and discuss BOUNDARIES!
Send me a voice message on Instagram or Facebook with your take on boundaries. I want to hear your advice and/or stories. How did you learn the importance of setting boundaries?

Is there something in your past you're not super in-love with? Maybe it doesn't haunt you, but when you think about it, you still feel a sliver of shame.
Emily Hamblin is the host of the podcast Enlightening Motherhood, a podcast for mothers who feel at the end of their rope and could use a little hope and enlightenment. She has a heart of gold and loves to serve others so what is her sliver of shame?
Apparently she was "click-ish" in grade school. Come Beyond her Picket Fence as we dig into her childhood then venture through the ups and downs of her story that eventually led to creating an inclusive community for moms.
Listen to Emily and Chelsea discuss how vulnerability can help enlighten mothers on Enlightening Motherhood Podcast.

Have you ever been laying in bed and had the thought, "Shoot...did I lock the door?" Then you either decide, "well, one night with a door unlocked won't kill me", or like most, you get up and check if it's locked. For most it ends at that.
Not this week's guest. Imagine checking only to go back to bed to wonder again if it was right, so you go back and you check again and again and again.
KaLee Mortensen lived a long life of feeling scared, misunderstood, overwhelmed, and in chronic physical pain (Fibromyalgia). It wasn't until her late 30's she learned she had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Fibromyalgia and OCD are not things that go away yet, KaLee has learned to listen to what her body and mind are telling her. What does life look like for a woman who lived most of her life with undiagnosed OCD? What has she learned? Come beyond her picket fence and find out how she learned to find order in her disorder.

Sometimes going beyond the picket fence means venturing beyond what you know to see into someone else's life, not just letting people in. It works both ways!!! There are a lot of things to disagree on these days so I hope to cultivate a place where people can honor themselves and still be loved.
Abortion is one of these heated topics that I feel could use a lot more compassion and less judgment. Here is a "Deleted Scene" from the interview "The Host's Mom". A Woman who ACTUALLY HAD TO ABORT A PREGNACY.
I hope you leave your agenda behind and just listen. You don't have to change your opinion, JUST LISTEN, without judgment. Is it possible? I hope so because we could change this world one compassionate conversation at a time.

Have you had that moment yet, where you realize your parents aren't actually on this planet just for you? I hadn't. I know that sounds selfish, but truly, I often think about my parents as my go to for advice or direction. So this episode I took myself out of the child mode and into friend mode. What is my mom's story? Why is she the way she is?
Debra Thomas, my mom, comes on to talk about her child hood trauma, why it's difficult for her to be around contention, and spoiler alert, you get a little of our Thomas Family dirt. Though we do look beautiful all together in a picture, we, like every family, have our struggles.

You know how the movies that tell the "villain's" story are really popular right now? And after seeing their side you learn they aren't really a "bad guy". It's usually some form of misunderstanding or miscommunication. You even end up rooting for them in the end!
This week we hear from Dawn, a woman who left her husband, church, and negative self talk behind. It's easy to judge someone who has walked a different path than you but when you strip it all down and just listen, you can see where they're coming from. How can a believer and a non-believer cultivate a beautiful relationship of love, respect, and compassion? We are about to show you how in this open heartfelt discussion.

How would you feel if your father murdered your mother? Isn't that kind of an insane question? I know!! That's why when I read Shelly's story I had to know more.
Shelly was 15 when that became her reality. How does someone experience this and end up ok? Shelly takes us through her childhood. From victim of domestic violence to author and advocate, she really has proven you don't have to be the victim. You can choose not to be "jaded" and still live a beautiful life.
